Welcome to Kilmorack Gallery A prominent gallery director once told me that ‘beauty remains.’ ‘Thank God,’ he continued. He was right for the aesthetic, thankfully, accompanies us throughout our lives. A moment of colour and form may contain a fleeting magic that finds a way into our lives, and which stays there, as a memory, even in the harshest times. It exists somewhere in the coldest heart too. The images in this book illustrate this. Take a look at the faces, landscapes and abstractions in the works, and at what lies beneath them. In all of them there is something seen on an artist’s adventure, an ‘essential’ that has been grasped and brought back to the world of the room you are in now. It is the role of artists and galleries to ensure that this found wonder remains alive: as a harbour for a moment’s connection with nature, or a pocket where a glimpse of greater understanding can be placed. Art, and especially contemporary art, has never been more important. I founded Kilmorack Gallery in 1997, reusing a redundant eighteenth-century church as a base to show the work of the finest artists in the Highlands. Soon we exhibited painters and sculptors from all around Scotland and sold them far beyond. We are now a destination for anyone interested in paintings, sculpture and ceramics, and like to think of ourselves as a place where there are no borders.

76

It is now twenty-five years since opening our doors and we still use the old church to welcome visitors. The vast open space with its beautiful gothic-revival interior, original pink walls and stained-glass allows us to remodel for each exhibition, so we constantly change, evolving in a fresh flow of stunning shows. For those interested, work from over eighty regular artists can often be viewed in our vaults. We also have one of the country’s most up-to-date websites. This gives information on the latest happenings: exhibitions, artists, other news and opening times and, if you wish, you can sign up to our mailing list from here too. I hope that you can make it to see us and to view our beautiful paintings and sculpture.
