Robert McAulay Revisiting the Estate
13 November - 5 December 2020
Our revels now are ended. These our actors, As I foretold you, were all spirits, and Are melted into air, into thin air: And like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud-capp’d tow’rs, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve, And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff As dreams are made on; and our little life Is rounded with a sleep. The Tempest Act 4, scene 1, 148–158

Foreword
Robert McAulay’s work captures something seen in a dream moment, like a staged play. They are conjoured from the frabric of his past recollections, present feelings and future loves.Things are glimpsed through a window or hidden by a tower. In McAulay’s paintings, tomblike buildings are also homes and the past fades with time. This could be dark, but they are not. McAulay’s work is always, most importantly, about light, colour and texture: the stuff the best dreams are made of. Kilmorack Gallery is very pleased to present his latest collection of paintings, ‘Revisiting the Estate.’
