dark island oil on canvas KIRSTIE COHEN

The hills, lochs, seas and skies are intentionally in a state of unresolved flux; light and dark move around, tides rise and fall and the flatness of a moor can also be the rolling of the sea‌ and the land is alive, her paintings are alive.

INGEBJORG SMITH march/april

Ingebjorg Smith’s collages are infused with playfulness, naivety and a delicate play of textures. Use of collage as a medium is characterised by an almost experimental play of materials – various layers interplay as a composition is formed and Smith’s work conveys delight in this process. ROBERT POWELL Robert Powell graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2008. His work takes a historical fact or fiction as its starting point, and moves on a journey which ultimately leads to a comment on the present.

After I saw my first Sally Matthews sculpture, a ghost was left. I was haunted by the life she put into the steel and straw. Like a drawing they have fluidity, line and fun. You can see Matthews’ devotion to her subjects and her material; and the resulting sculpture has a rare brilliance. tony davidson

CHRISTOPHER WOOD RSW march/april

'The word which most readily comes to mind as I move through Wood's paintings is 'visceral'. There is something deeply intuitive about these works; alternately insistent, lyrical, emphatic and searingly emotive. This is painting from the heart, in its purest form.' Iain Gale, Sept 2006

STEVE DILWORTH may/june

Steve Dilworth’s work unsurprisingly has an international following. His sculpture creates myths and reveals truths that can only be felt when looking at them or touching then. Human life is fleeting, and even stone degrades but there is beauty everywhere. Dilworth is also a skilled craftsman. For Dilworth the act of making can produce magic.

PATRICIA CAIN

Figure Head 2 - Jim Bond - steel

PATRICIA CAIN won both the Threadneedle prize and the Aspect prize in 2010 and had a solo exhibition in Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Gallery in 2011 with architecturally inspired paintings and drawings of Glasgow’s shipyards. Work this March’s exhibition is the result of a three month residency in Wilhelmina Barns-Grahams’ studio Living as aSt Process outside Andrewsii and her move to 11cm x 150cm a new rural home. SAM CARTMAN

Figure Head 2 - Jim Bond - steel

'I first saw Sam Cartman’s work at the Nairn Art Competition in 2009. The quality was obvious. There’s a gutsy use of paint and magnificent feeling of space. Sam’s total dedication to his art also struck me. Tony Davidson, Gallery Director, January 2013

ALAN MACDONALD

While there are many historical art influences to be seen in this work, MacDonald remains his own man, in full knowledge of the canon, playfully seducing the viewer with familiarity of style then subverting expectation of traditional narrative. Displacement of elements; the surreal juxtaposition of classical and industrial architecture, the adornment and status of costume with utilitarian functionality and the presence of consumer branding/ Pop elements in the same frame as traditions of historical painting and portraiture thankfully never allow the audience to get too comfortable. LOTTE GLOB june/july

To Lotte [Glob] the landscape is a living thing full of magic and reinvention. It is a place where a boulder may get up and walk off on stout sturdy legs. It is also a place of song and star-gazers. Glob takes inspiration and materials from here, and often offers them back as gifts to the Gods of nature. The inspiration of her father is there too: the ancient peaty Tullund Man and the Figure Head 2 CoBrA artists. Jim Bond steel

MADELINE MACKAY june/july

There is something that pulls one towarsd Madeline Mackay's work. It's not just the marks created by etchings and prints, which I love for their timeless Figurequality. Head 2 There is something else too, another Jim Bond form of maturity in her work, steel

which I think comes from her Caithness upbringing. Animals and archaeology are everywhere there. There is ithe great skill and determination of the artist too

RUTH BROWNLEE june/july

Ruth Brownlee was born in Lothian and studied at Edinburgh College of Art. For the twenty years she has worked from the Shetland Isles. Not surprisingly Brownlee’s paintings are always being reinspired by the constantly changing weather, the sea and Figure theHead land.2 Jim Bond steel

N ADAMS AUGUST 2015

'[James Newton Adam's] simplified forms and aerial perspective give a dream-like quality to the work, evocative of childhood memory. There is playfulness and melancholy in equal measure in Adams’s work, child-like simplicity combined with adult consciousness in his fluid and adept handling of materials.' Georgina Coburn, 2009

NALD AUGUST 2015

Allan MacDonald’s paintings of the Scottish landscape have become increasingly sought after in recent years. He has a rare skill for capturing the magic of the places he visits: the far North West, Skye, and the areas around his home and studio close to Kilmorack Gallery. MacDonald, who graduated from Edinburgh College of Art, works in the Northern Romantic tradition and is influenced by Tom Thomson, of the Canadian ‘Group of Seven’.
