CRJ 443 Week 3 Case Study – The Church Committee and COINTELPRO

Download Case Study – The Church Committee and COINTELPRO. Domestic intelligence collection went under major transformation due to the intelligence collection abuses discovered by the Church Committee, also known as the U.S. Senate Select Committee to Study Governmental Operations with Respect to Intelligence Activities. In 1975, this committee investigated intelligence gathering by the C.I.A. and F.B.I. for illegality. The findings of this investigation resulted in major reshaping of U.S. domestic intelligence collection efforts. Examine Intelligence and Domestic Dissent: 1964-1976 (pp. 75-131), and answer the following questions:

1. What was the purpose of the Church Committee? 2. What was COINTELPRO? 3. How did the Church Committee change domestic intelligence collection? What limits were placed on domestic intelligence collection? 4. Are the provisions of the Church Committee still in effect today? 5. Do you believe the changes made in response to the Church Committee were justified? Support your argument with historical evidence.
