Drive to Luray Caverns for the day

Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad

A short trip across the Virginia state line will land you at any number of underground caverns to explore. Luray Caverns is just one example that allows visitors to travel underground and see amazing sights. Stalagtites and stalagmites, as well as an underground organ await those who venture into the constantly cool temperatures of the caverns. A guided tour provides answers how the caverns were formed. At Luray, an outdoor maze offers added entertainment for guests as they seek to find the hidden clues and make it back to the start.

The Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad can transport passengers, not only to different areas of interest within the state, but also through time as passengers experience traveling in the same manner as fellow Mountaineers did more than 100 years ago. Additional information and reservations are available by calling 304-424-0736, or by visiting www.potomaceagle.info.

The Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex features the largest conical earthen mound in the New World, measuring at 62 feet tall with a base diameter of 240 feet. Built by the prehistoric Native Americans attributed to the Adena cultural tradition, it listed as both a National Historic Landmark and a property in the National Register of Historic Places. Construction of the mound took place in successive stages from about 250-150 B.C. All the same, the fact that it required Native American labor to transport some three million basket loads to build the 57,000 ton mound is impressive. The mound is open Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m.

Budget Travel named Lewisburg America’s Coolest Small Town in 2011, and the quaint town is made up of little shops, the iconic Carnegie Hall, the famous Greenbrier Resort and more. Dating from the 18th-century, Lewisburg was the site of a Civil War battle on May 23, 1862, when Union forces attempted to sever railroad communications between Virginia and Tennessee. There is a Confederate cemetery in town, a library that was used as a hospital with Confederate graffiti on the walls, a church with a cannonball hole and a monument to the Confederate dead.

MISCELLANEOUS Adjust your financial plan October is financial planning month, so take some easy steps to make sure you stay on budget for the remainder of the year. Pack your own lunch, take advantage of coupons and, most importantly, stay positive, and you’ll be on the right track to end 2016 in the black.

Freshen your fall wardrobe Cooler weather means tailgating, apple picking, attending festivals and enjoying changing leaves. It also means it’s time to refresh the wardrobe. Start by selecting seasonal colors and patterns — earth tones are always a great option. Follow that up with a nice pair of boots — brown or black — and lace them up for a hike. Just adding these fall statples to your wardrobe will provide a fresh new look for a festive fall.

Buy a new vehicle The season you purchase a vehicle matters. For example, early fall is when newmodel-year vehicles are rolling into dealers’ inventories. Some of the best deals are on older-year models. For instance, a 2016 model may be steeply discounted once 2017 models arrive. In some cases, dealers will even have the previous model year in stock. Keep in mind though, since a leftover model is already outdated, it’s automatically worth less than a car from the newest year.

Create a festive fall home With autumn comes crisp falling leaves, fresh brisk air and pumpkin

Begin preparing for retirement While it is never too early or too late to prepare for retirement, today is always the right day to take action. Begin by finding out if your employer offers a matching 401k option. Continue by increasing your contribution to your retirement fund. Finally, meet with a finanical advisor who can help you achieve financial security well into your later years.

Face a nagging fear Whether it’s heights, animals or foreign foods, take the opportunity to dive into some lesser traveled areas of your mind and determine if you have what it takes to face your deepest fears. And, you never know, something you have feared for decades may end up being the one thing that you end up finding great joy in. Time to dive in the skies.
