Tips for hydrating and refreshing dry skin

Dehydrated skin is among the many causes of facial wrinkling, which also can be caused by smoking, environmental factors and UV exposure. Aging skin doesn’t produce as much collagen and elastin, which allows skin to spring back into place, as it once did. Conditions like dry, dehydrated skin may make wrinkles appear worse. Treating dehydration and dryness may reduce wrinkles and refresh dry skin, giving it a more youthful appearance. Those who want to treat dry, dehydrated skin must understand the difference between hydration and moisturizing as it applies to skincare. According to Annemarie Gianni, a skincare aesthetician and creator of Annemarie Skin Care, hydrating skin means increasing its water content by increasing the amount of water contained in skin cells. This can result in a healthy, plump complexion. Skin that is properly hydrated will keep fine lines and wrinkles from being

overly apparent. Moisturizing skin involves applying a lubricant that mimics naturally produced lipids and oils in the skin that will protect and soothe. Hydration and moisturizing often work hand-in-hand. In addition to drinking plenty of water to hydrate the skin from the inside out, individuals can use products that contain hyaluronic acid, glycerin and sodium hyaluronate. These are known as humectants. In addition, the National Center of Biotechnology Information says that aloe can improve water content in the skin. Once water is bound to the skin, a moisturizer will prevent the water from leaving it. Look for moisturizers with natural oils and butters to help retain moisture, like cocoa butter. The following are some additional methods to maximize hydration and moisturize skin. • Take warm showers, as hot water can strip the natural lipids

from skin and cause dryness. • Avoid too many alcoholic beverages. Alcoholic drinks are diuretics that can cause the body to lose water, advises WebMD. • Use a humidifier indoors to amp up the moisture level in the air. • Enjoy water-rich foods, like watermelon, cucumber, grapes, and other succulent fruits and vegetables. • Drink the recommended amount of water per day, and

limit your consumption of caffeinated and sugary beverages. • Work out to improve blood flow and oxygenation in the skin. • Try a facial essence. Facial essences are a principle of Japanese beauty regimens and contain fermented ingredients that support skin penetration and hydration. Anyone concerned about dehydrated or dry skin can get further advice about treating the problem by speaking with a qualified dermatologist or aesthetician.

Get schooled on wedding terminology

Couples about to embark on their wedding journeys will likely learn a thing or two about party planning once their engagements are over and they are newly married. Wedding planning can seem overwhelming and a tad confusing at times, but a crash course in wedding terminology can help couples make more informed choices along the way.

BLUSHER A short, single-layer veil that covers the bride’s face before the ceremony.

BOUTONNIÈRE A single flower bud worn by the men in the bridal party.

CANAPÉS Bite-sized appetizers served during the cocktail hour of a reception. CIVIL CEREMONY A marriage ceremony con-

ducted by a council official or justice of the peace at a municipal location rather than in a house of worship.

DRAGÉES Round, small edible balls of sugar that appear on wedding cakes.

COCKTAIL HOUR Typically an hour-long interlude between the wedding ceremony and the main dinner of the reception. Guests have time to arrive and mingle before being seated.

ESCORT (SEATING) CARDS Printed cards that direct reception guests to their seats.

CORKAGE FEE A fee some establishments charge to allow guests to bring their own wine. DAIS A podium or platform raised from the floor where the bride and groom are seated. DEPOSIT A percentage of the total cost of service given to a vendor to secure a date for their services.

FONDANT A sweet, plyable product used to decoratively cover layered cakes. It can be used in lieu of straight buttercream. HANDLE WRAP Ribbon or fabric that wraps around the stems of a bouquet the bride and wedding party carries. MAID/MATRON OF HONOR The title given to the woman who assists the bride and stands closest to her at the altar. “Maids” are those who are unmarried, while “matrons” are women who are.

MASTER OF CEREMONIES An individual who will work with the DJ or band to announce the various components of the wedding reception. NOSEGAY A small bouquet or flower arrangement typically given to the mothers of the bride and groom before the ceremony. PROCESSIONAL/ RECESSIONAL Musical pieces that mark the entrance and exit from the wedding ceremony. RECEIVING LINE A line of the key people in the wedding who welcome and greet guests. TABLESCAPE A word that describes the multiple components of centerpiece designs.

Maintain honeymoon beauty

According to TripSavvy, 99 percent of couples who choose to have traditional weddings take a honeymoon. Around 1.4 million couples in the United States depart for honeymoons around the world each year, spending an average of $4,466 on the trip. Though not nearly as pressure-filled as wedding planning, honeymoons do require some planning to ensure a fun and memorable trip. In a Bridal Guide survey, wedding couples indicated they were most likely to worry about wardrobe, swimsuits, sunglasses, sunscreen, and luggage when getting ready to depart. Couples who want to look their best on their honeymoon and in their honeymoon photos should not forget to pack the following items.

• Sunscreen: Sunscreen is a must whether you’re traveling to the pink beaches of a tropical island or the slopes of a ski resort. Choose a product that protects

against both UVA and UVB rays, and be sure to reapply every 80 minutes or so, especially after perspiring or swimming. Sunscreen will help prevent damaging and painful sunburns that can adversely affect a trip.

few late nights while you’re enjoying romantic, candlelit meals or hitting up the hot spots around a resort. Ensure honeymoon photos do not show tired eyes with an eye cream that can reduce puffiness and dark circles.

• Makeup-remover wipes: Even high-end resorts may not provide the correct face bar for removing makeup and refreshing skin. Makeup-removing wipes can offer deep cleaning in a few convenient swipes.

• Tinted moisturizer or BB cream: A high-quality tinted moisturizer or BB cream will hydrate skin and add just a sheer wash of color to even out skin tone. Pair with lip balm and a waterproof mascara and your honeymoon face will be ready.

• Hair refresher: Brides who want to get a few extra days out of a wedding day hairstyle should pack a hair refreshing spray to tame static and add UV protectors that keep locks pampered until they’re ready to wash. Dry shampoos also allow for a little refreshing of hair between daytime adventures and evening dinner. • Eye cream: There may be a

• Teeth whitening treatment: Couples who invested time and money into achieving whiter teeth for their weddings don’t want to let all of that hard work go to waste. Brush on whitening product after eating and drinking to prevent stains and freshen breath. • Blotting papers: Humid

climates may cause perspiration and oils to leach out of the skin. Tame shine and that greasy feeling with blotting papers purchased from a cosmetics retailer. • Light fragrance: Heavy perfumes have no business on breezy honeymoon escapes. Find a light, flowery scent or something tied to nature, like citrus in a travel-sized atomizer. • Stick-on bra cups: To feel more stylish and comfortable in strapless and/or backless dresses on their honeymoons, brides can use stick-on bra cups that offer support and lift. • Travel brow kit: Keep brows tamed and looking great with mini-tweezers, brow filler and gel. Honeymoon beauty is easy to achieve if the right supplies are brought along on the trip.

Easy steps to prevent prenatal infections

Protecting children begins the moment a mother learns she is pregnant. Illnesses can affect children in the womb, and expecting parents should be aware of conditions that can affect the health of the fetus, also known as prenatal infections. The organization Group B Strep International says that approximately one in four pregnant women carry GBS, the leading cause of sepsis and meningitis in newborns according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. GBS also can infect babies during pregnancy and the first few months of life. GBS as well as other conditions, such as cytomegalovirus, listeriosis and Zika virus, are serious health problems that can affect a fetus and expecting mothers. Mothers can take various steps to protect themselves and their babies from infectious contagions. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the CDC offer these tips to expecting parents.

WASH HANDS OFTEN

The single best way to prevent contraction and spread of any illness is through hand-wash-

ing. Use warm water and soap to wash hands before and after certain activities, such as preparing foods, eating and using the restroom and after coming in contact with surfaces that may be germ-ridden.

COOK MEAT TO PROPER TEMPERATURES Use a food thermometer to make sure the internal temperature of meats, poultry and fish are at the recommended levels for safety. Undercooked foods may contain harmful bacteria, such as listeria and E. coli.

AVOID UNPASTEURIZED DAIRY PRODUCTS Feta, queso fresco, brie and other soft cheeses should be avoided unless the label specifically mentions pasteurization. Make sure yogurts and milks are pasteurized as well.

SKIP RAW SPROUTS Listeria may be found on alfalfa, clover, radish, and mung bean sprouts unless they are

thoroughly cooked.

GET TESTED FOR GBS Doctors can swab you to see if you have this type of bacteria. If they learn you do, they will advise you on how to protect the baby during labor.

STAY AWAY FROM ZIKA-PRONE AREAS Avoid travel to areas of the world with known Zika outbreaks. If a spouse or partner has traveled to these areas, exercise extreme caution during sexual intercourse, as the disease can be transmitted this way as well.

LEAVE CAT CARE TO OTHERS Dirty cat litter may contain a parasite that causes toxoplasmosis. Let someone else clean and tend to the litter box for the duration of your pregnancy. These are just a few tips to help keep your fetus safe. Expecting parents can discuss other ways with their physicians.

Save your face one exercise at a time

Hundreds of billions of dollars are spent each year on anti-aging and anti-wrinkling treatments in an effort to improve one’s appearance and mask potential signs of aging. Zion Market Research says the global anti-aging market was valued at $140.3 billion in 2015 and is expected to reach $216.52 billion in 2021. Although medical procedures and products sold at drug stores and by cosmetics retailers have their benefits, exercise also may provide some benefits, especially as it pertains to one’s face and appearance. Just as it is possible to tone the body, one also can tone The study the muscles in found that the face to ima daily or prove his or her alternate-day appearance. Fans attest that the movements also may encourage the production of collagen, which is the protein that keeps skin elastic and gives it its plump feeling. The face contains 57 muscles that can be worked gently to see results. A new Northwestern Medicine study published in JAMA Dermatology is the first scientific study to test the premise of facial exercise and its effects on appearance. The study found that a daily or alternate-day 30-minute facial

exercise program sustained over 20 weeks improved the facial appearance of middle-aged women, resulting in a younger appearance with fuller upper and lower cheeks. The idea is that building muscle volume can counter the effects of age-related fat thinning and skin loosening in the face. Some people are skeptical of facial exercise, while others emphasize caution in regard to which exercises are chosen. Some dermatologists warn that

pulling the face in the wrong directions through exercise actually may speed up the process of wrinkling and premature aging, making face exercises a trend to avoid. People who are currently on the fence may want to focus on movements that will strengthen facial muscles. Doris Day, M.D., author of the book “Skinfluence,” says to try a facial movement where you look like you’re going to laugh or smile but don’t actu-

ally follow through. This raises eyebrows and targets those muscles and the ones by the ears that pull the skin back. Adopting a neutral face at rest is helpful as it helps prevent wrinkled brow and lines from frowning. The jury is still out as to the efficacy of facial exercise for wrinkle reduction. Combining facial stretching with a healthy diet and use of sunscreen and resolving to stay hydrated might help reduce the appearance of aging.

Fill your life with plenty more leisure time

Few working professionals would likely say they could not use more leisure time. People spend their leisure time in various ways, and many would prefer more time to pursue their passions away from the workplace. While they may not be able to create more time in the day, men and women can take various steps to create more time for leisure. • Spend free time more wisely. According to the 2015 American Time Use Survey from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, persons age 15 and over averaged four hours and 59 minutes of leisure time per day. That figure may come as a surprise to working professionals who feel they never have enough time to pursue their passions. But such people may just be spending their leisure time in ways that don’t incorporate their passions. For instance, the American Time Use Survey found that more than half of the nearly five hours of leisure time persons 15 and over enjoyed each day was spent watching television. Men and women who want to make the most of their free time can note the amount of time they spend watching television, ultimately skipping their binge watching sessions in favor of pursuing their passions.

• Consider downsizing. Empty nesters, working professionals with no children or even parents whose kids still live at home may benefit by downsizing their homes. The American Time Use Survey found that men spend an average of 22 minutes per day doing housework, while women spend 50 minutes per day doing housework. Downsizing to smaller homes that don’t require as much daily maintenance can provide men and women with more leisure time. • Get out of the kitchen. Cooking is a favorite leisure activity for many people. But for those who prefer to be out and about rather than preparing meals in the kitchen, cooking can be more of a time-consuming chore than a rewarding passion. The American Time Use Survey found that men spend 43 minutes per day on food preparation and cleanup, while women spend 70 minutes per day on such activities. Meal delivery services can cut down on the time it takes to prepare meals, opening up more leisure time for people who want to spend less time in the kitchen each day. • Make an effort to split chores down the middle. As evidenced by the time men and women spend on housework and cooking,

the American Time Use Survey found that household chores are not always divided equitably among men and women. Adults who feel they do not have enough leisure time in their day can work with their spouses or significant others to ensure both partners are doing an equal amount of work around the house. Leisure time that’s spent well can contribute to a higher quality of life. Many people may be surprised to learn just how much leisure time they can enjoy each day by making a few simple tweaks to their daily routines.

Should you get stuck on the magnetic eyelash trend?

omen have long relied on false eyelashes to intensify their natural lashes with thickness and length. False eyelashes have come in many varieties through the years, from the classic adhesives to lash extensions individually woven onto lashes in specialty salons. A new contender in the lash market, magnetic lashes are the latest trend to make news. But do magnetic lashes have staying power? And what are the health concerns, if any, with magnetic lashes? Instead of fussing with glues and lashes, which often requires a delicate touch and lots of practice to master, falsies not lining up, or painful tearing out of

natural lashes when it comes time for removal, magnetic lashes offer a new twist. These products work by sandwiching natural lashes between a false lash set that adheres with small magnets. To apply, one simply places the top lash and the bottom lash on the lash line with her natural lashes in between. The false lashes, which are reusable, click into place and are designed to be easily removed by sliding the magnetic strips apart. As more people embrace magnetic lashes, some may begin to wonder if there are any potential health concerns associated with them. Magnetic lashes seem to present some of the same concerns of other false lashes and eyelash extensions. False eyelashes and

Eyelash extensions have reportedly caused irritation to the conjunctiva (conjunctivitis) or cornea (keratitis). The irritation may be caused by direct contact from the lashes themselves or hypersensitivity to the substances used to attach them. Also, the College of Optometrists in England has warned that “repeated use of eyelash extensions or false lashes can cause traction alopecia, a condition where the hair falls out due to excessive tension placed on the hair shaft.â€? False lashes have been associated with other problems as well. According to a study from Guillermo Amador, a Ph.D. candidate at the Georgia Institute of Technology, changing the proportion of eyelash (which ideally is one-third the width of the eye in length) can increase airflow around the eye and lead to more dust hitting the surface of the eye.

Consequently, this air and dust can dry out the eyes quickly. While many proponents of magnetic lashes say they are easy to use, less messy and more convenient than glue varieties that may cause allergic reactions, there are those who lament that the magnetic lash strips, which need to be straight, do not bend with the curvature of the eye. This results in a less-than-natural appearance. There’s also the risk of a disruption in the lay of the natural lashes because they’re anchoring the magnetic sets. Exercise caution to reduce yanking on natural lashes during application and removal. False eyelashes should be cleaned and only be applied after freshly washing your hands. Women interested in trying magnetic lashes should first speak with an eye doctor to gauge their safety prior to use, and with any false lashes, give the eyes a chance to rest between uses.

Working parents can create a work-life balance

Many working parents struggle to maintain a healthy balance between their responsibilities at work and their obligations to their families. An inability to maintain that healthy balance can have adverse effects on men and women’s careers as well as the relationships they have with their families. A 2015 survey of more than 2,000 adults commissioned by the workplace solution provider Workfront found that 38 percent of survey participants have missed life events because of a bad work-life balance. Access to technology that means work is never too far away might contribute to poor work-life balance, as 57 percent of respondents also acknowledged feeling that technology has ruined the definition of a family dinner. Finding a healthy balance between work and life at home may require a concerted effort on the part of working parents, but there

Metro Creative Services

are ways to successfully juggle a career and family. • Set reasonable goals. Much

of the difficulty men and women experience in regard to finding a healthy work-life balance may be a byproduct of working parents spreading themselves too thin. Setting reasonable goals can help avoid that, but doing so requires taking commitments to one’s employer and family into consideration before agreeing to take on new projects or setting deadlines for projects to be completed. This should be applied to both work and home. If a work deadline is unreasonable, professionals should discuss that with their employers, who might change the deadline or arrange for extra persons to work on the project. At home, parents should avoid taking on too many projects, such as chaperoning a child’s dance or coaching a sports team, if doing so will adversely affect the amount of time they get to spend with their families. • Look for ways to be more efficient. Interactions with coworkers can make work more enjoyable, but working parents should not spend too much time shooting the breeze with their fellow employees. Doing so wastes time and only contributes to work-related stress. Commuters who don’t drive themselves to work can be more efficient

by using their commutes to read emails, arrange meetings or catch up on projects. Doing so allows for more time to get work done while in the office, which can make it easier to go home on time. • Request changes to work schedules. While technology may have largely eliminated the separation between the office and home, working parents can use that to their advantage by asking their employees to alter their work schedules. Telecommuting one or two days a week can help parents feel more connected to their families, while flex schedules can ensure working parents don’t miss any of their children’s dance recitals or weekday afternoon ballgames. • Unplug when you get home. Perhaps the simplest and most effective way for parents to regain a healthy work-life balance is to unplug their devices. Employing “Do not disturb” settings on smartphones and turning off tablets can ensure parents don’t spend their time at home working but connecting with their families. Maintaining a healthy worklife balance is no small task for today’s working parents. But such a goal is possible.

Hidden ways you can Accepting New Patients benefit from hobbies for Gynecologic and Obstetric Care.

Finding time for hobbies can be difficult. Commitments to work and family take up the bulk of many people’s free time, making it hard to squeeze in a favorite hobby. But hobbies can benefit people in some interesting ways. Understanding those hidden benefits may compel some people to make more time for their favorite downtime activities. • Hobbies can improve your efficiency. Penciling more activities into your day planner may not seem like something that will help you create more time for hobbies, but it just might. For example, if you know you have a softball game or choir practice at night, then you might waste less time surfing the internet or talking around the water cooler during the workday. In a 2017 study conducted for the staffing firm OfficeTeam, researchers found that the average office employee spends about five hours per week on his or her mobile phone doing things that have nothing to do with the job. That’s five hours you could be working, opening up more time for hobbies before or after work. • Hobbies can foster social connections. In his 2000 book, “Bowling Alone,” political scientist Robert Putnam described a reduction in in-person social intercourse that once enriched Americans’ social lives. By making more time for hobbies, particularly those that promote interaction with other adults, men and women can foster social connections that otherwise might never blossom. • Hobbies can provide health benefits. The American Institute of Stress notes that some hobbies can help people reduce their stress. The AIS notes that some 56 million women in the United States now knit or crochet. That marks a 51 percent increase over the last decade. That revival is attributed to the stress-reducing properties of

knitting and crocheting. Men and women coping with stress need not learn how to wield a sewing needle to alleviate their stress. Activities that promote slowing down and induce a relaxation response similar to knitting and crocheting can be equally beneficial. • Hobbies can increase quality time with your children. Parents with hobbies can double dip, using the time they would ordinarily spend with their children to teach them some of their favorite hobbies. Take kids along when you go fishing or teach them how to plant flowers and tend to a garden. This is a great way to increase quality time with your children while also affording you a chance to continue engaging in your favorite hobbies. Hobbies can benefit people in ways they never imagined, making them worthwhile pursuits no matter how much or how little time you may have.

Make cooking at home a part of daily routines

D

ining out can be a special treat after a busy week, a way to celebrate special occasions or a means to socialize with friends. Dining out every so often can be part of a healthy lifestyle, but individuals who want to exercise the utmost control over their diets may find eating at home makes it easier to do so. According to a Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey, many Americans dine out at least once per week. Restaurants Canada says spending on dining out has grown to around $72 billion a year. But entrée options on restaurant menus may be high in calories and compromise dieters’ efforts to slim down. Research published in the Journal of the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics by Tufts University author William Masters found the average dinner entrée is 1,500 calories. Depending on age and gender, health experts say that adults need somewhere between 2,000 and 2,500

calories per day. The Energy Metabolism Laboratory found that 92 percent of meals from large-chain and local restaurants contain more calories than is recommended for the average person. If dining out is compromising diners’ attempts to lose weight or maintain healthy weights, then exploring the following benefits to dining at home might be enough to compel them to enjoy more meals prepared in their own kitchens. • Cooking their own foods affords diners control over ingredients, including those that might not promote weight loss. • Making meals enables you to regulate the amount of food served, better controlling portion sizes. • Dining together as a family has been linked to benefits like improved conversation, reduced substance abuse in children and reduced obesity in families, according to the University of Washington. Those who are unaccustomed to cooking at home and/or struggling to find time

to make their own meals can use these tips to make things go more smoothly. • Plot out a meal plan for the week and purchase ingredients for all recipes during one visit to the store. • Choose meals that can be prepared in advance over the weekend and then heated up during the week. • Incorporate a “leftovers day” into the schedule to prevent wasting food. • Stock up on staples that can be included in many different meals, such as chicken, beans, potatoes, and noodles. • Recognize that frozen or canned vegetables can be just as healthy as fresh items and stored safely for longer periods of time. • Use a blend of convenience items and fresh ingredients for healthy meals. Meals need not be entirely made from scratch. Eating more meals at home, where cooks can control ingredients and portion sizes, can help men and women lose weight and maintain healthy weights.
