foreword The time I spent at the Corcoran College of Art + Design had opened up a whole new world to me. Thanks to the support of many people. Prior to this, I was a Vietnamese girl grew up in a family in which middle school was the higest level of education. Prior to this I thought knowing photoshop is awesome and that I don’t need a degree in the field to get a design job. I never thought I would made it this far. This book is not just a portfolio. This book is a recap of the memories, the lessons, the hard work and the pride that happened during my three years at the institution.
year
one It might sound naive but I never thought it would make any
difference if a letter is further away or smaller/bigger than the one right next to it. I still remembered one time I excitedly told my mom that we spent the whole class time trying to space the letters in the word LETTERS right. She gave me a weird look thinking that I wasted her money... It takes lots of time and practices to understand that design is not just about the shapes, the colors or the typefaces. Design is all about the details.
magazine: Western Interior What looks good on screen might not look the same in print. A 12pt Futura and a 12pt Garamond are very different. But I did not know about these things before doing this magazine even though I thought I know how to design very well.
poster: Winekey The end product of this project is very simple but who would have known that it has gone through almost 8 weeks of experiment. It is these types of works that help us learn to make our own judgement on the design and to appreciate the process of making it. The real world is full of works created under pressure and lack of originality. Now that I look back, I wish I could have more project like this one.
branding: Discovery Theater Content is king. designer has to be a writer too. I learned it the hard way. As part of this rebranding project I had to create a series of posters inviting kids to spend a night at the Natural History Museum. The day I showed my first draft turned out to be one of the most memorable day in my college time. When I presented a poster featuring an eleplant with the tag line Let my trunk tuck you into bed, everyone laughed for ten minutes. As a foreigner whose English is not the first language, I did not know the copy would sound very awkward and sexual related. Though, I appreaciated the fact that it happened.
retail-display: Adidas Originals Designing retail display was a fun experience. While other classmates was assigned with local stores, I got Adidas which is one of my favorite brand. However I was intimidated by the tons of great works that have been done in their stores. So I decided to go back to basic.
year two
It is this point of the journey that I started to define myself as a multidisciplinary designer. Junior year at the Corcoran College of Art + Design, we practiced defining user experience. However, I tried not to just think of a product as how it would be presented on a screen. Insteads, I conceptualized products from how they look physically to what form/ method they are delivered to the users and what they offer visually. I had always thought that branding would be my career focus. It was a mistake, not because I discorvered something else that I am more interested in. It is because I realize I should not restrict myself to any boundary.
product: Garden Monitoring The goal of this project is to design a product that support daily activities. My concept is a program that helps gardeners monitor the growth of their plants by detecting plants’ health and weather condition, and providing users a systematic report that is accessible remotely. This product comes with multiple component including health sticks, control pad and mobile app.

book: Two Typographers A succesful publication is made of 30% design and 70% production. No matter how much you praise, the printing god and the paper god are not always on your side. Well sometimes one does and the other doesn’t. While great design takes practices, good product takes a lot of planning. Designer has to know the in and out of a printing process too.

product: Election Ballot “Bad design harms American democracy,” said David Ramos–my Junior Core professor. Even though polictical projects are not fun and easy, they are benefitial to practice in school. This assignment only focused on user experience, though I incorporated branding and product design components to make it more fun to approach.

social campaign: Maryland Water I found it ironic that water is somewhat a dry topic to address when it comes to public awareness campaign. I took the challenge to remind Marylanders the most important elements of the earth is not being used the right way.
Thanks to Fifth Tribe, I got a full time internship during senior year. But there was a price I had to pay. I eventually got hit with tremedous work load. Here comes reality. There is no such thing as semester-long project. There are overlapping assignments with back-to-back deadlines... Thus, time for school work was sacrified. I was lucky to be given such great opportunities to learn from super talented professors and friends, to work side by side with passionate colleagues who know very well what they are doing. But I lost track and started to give up on one and chase the other. Thanks to my classmates, their improving works was a wake-up call. Thanks to my professors who remind me that work will never end but the time I have left as a student were counted by days.

infographic: Cancer Free UMMA I’ve been wondering why people make so many infographics lately. I figured that not just viewers love looking at infographic but designers love to make them too. Infographics offer a lot more creative freedom than many other kinds of design works. Albert Einstein said creativity is intelligence having fun. It is very true in this case because in an infographic designer basically plays with datas and make them more attractive.
CANCER AFFECTS US ALL
Cancer kills
In America, over a life time, cancer will develop in approximately 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women.
1600 PEOPLE everyday
In the U.S., 1 out of every 4 deaths is attributed to cancer.
In 2014, about 585,720 Americans are expected to die of cancer, almost 1,600 people per day
web: Fifth Tribe It was an honor to be entrusted with the task of redesign the company’s website. Prior to this, Fifth Tribe had a fully functioning website with in-depth information of what we do and our works. Through time we realized that the content was overwhelming and that potential clients do not have time to check out everything on the site. Keeping that in mind, I innitiated a simple version of the site. The main focus of the new site is three selective projects that represent the services Fifth Tribe offers. These projects are presented in the case study one page format.
