Odyssey /ˈɒdɪsɪ/ noun 1. (often lowercase) a long series of wanderings or adventures, especially when filled with notable experiences or hardships.

purpose Odyssey is a documentation journal displaying the turbulent adventure of the third year as a fashion design student at Auckland University of Technology. Blood, sweat and literal tears go into completing this degree to the end. This journal has the potential to be used as a promotional editorial for AUT Fashion Design and can be passed on to several PR companies around New Zealand to display the ‘ones to watch’ of 2017’s graduating class. The Odyssey Journal can be distributed to many New Zealand based fashion magazines, which could lead to potential editorial opportunities or magazine features for emerging designers. It could put the word out to a wider community that may not be reached without this type of documentary publication. A personal keepsake for each student would be a treasure to look back on in the future and to remember how far they’ve come since the first day back in 2015. Overall, Odyssey is a personal documentation of an intimate studio relationship that you won’t find anywhere else.

We are the class of 2017 and this is our story.

mood + tone The overall aesthetic of the Odyssey project is a clean backdrop with an emphasis on adaptable minimal design. This is chosen as the journal will have different ‘personalities‘ throughout the pages, as the shoots and spreads will be diverse due to the individual designers personal message convoyed in their collection. This will create a shell that is easily adaptable to different shoot aesthetics as the journal develops. Through in-depth research I have been able to analyse different layout designs, image to text ratios and overall page aesthetics. This research is based off magazines and journals, both mainstream and unknown, with an approach to design that I felt were in line with the style I am aiming to achieve. The next few pages include examples of layouts I have created that portray the ideal layout aesthetic I wish to achieve in my journal, including a photoshoot and text write up and more photoshoot inspiration.

Collections will be selected and individually photographed in accordance to their concept and collection aesthetic. The ‘Featured’ section will put a spotlight on individual students’ collections, accompanied by text in the form of either interviews or a write up. 5+ students’ collections will be chosen for this journal feature.

Each student will feature in an individual half page section, detailing their personal styles, collection concepts and methodologies. These profiles will be custom to the individual to create a more personal mood and to enhance the diverse creativity. Each profile will feature a photograph of the student to accompany the text.

The scrapbook section will be complied with shots from studio to show daily life as a student designer in third year and how we approach the collection design process. This will create a look into the lead up to rookie. An informal documentation showcasing candid studio life.

‘Meet the Makers‘ is an editorial I wish to include in this journal featuring students work of the past three years, mixed and matched together to create a diverse range of photographs. I am hoping to style them on class members and photograph them in groups or individually to create a not so serious reflection of the past three years’ achievements. A reflection to the past to make way for the future.

childs play Who am I? A question asked by many, but only some feel as though they can truely answer it. Georgia Dobbin explores this personal ideology of categorising self on a journey to reveal the real her. The

childhood. Old photographs and Nana’s older rugs became inspiration for this conceptual project. As a child, Georgia remembers playing dress up in her mothers clothes, and the feeling as though you just can’t wait to grow up and wear those amazing dresses. She recalls struggling with the difficulites of maturing into adulthood, while still holding onto her youthful spirit. Childs Play reflects the current period in her life as she transitions from teenager to adult and how she chooses to keep her childhood alive in her ever maturing life.

This project has had me drawn in from day one with excitement, I feel as though I connect with it more than the usual studio briefs, and it is an exciting opportunity.

1 - Generate interest by extending the invite for this photoshoot / idea to the third year group and create a list of interested people.

S

2 - Plan the shoot. Studio based (hopefully AUT studio). Arrange photographer who understands the vision.

Creating this journal will help me align more university work that represents future job opportunities I wish to pursue. And it can be digitised and included in my online portfolio that can lead to future job opportunities both domestic and international. Extending my skill set is a goal of mine and currently with this project I am self-taught in InDesign and Photoshop, I wish to learn more about photo editing and photoshoot skills to enhance my current knowledge.

Resources needed -

3 - Collect garments that people wish to have included and from there, mix and style the garments into a range of looks. Creating a melting pot of everyone’s garments and then assign looks for each person to wear. 4 - Arrange a time that suits most people, maybe a studio day and photograph in small groups of 6. Might have to do the shoot over two days, but preferably have it finished in one. 5 - Edit the shoot in post. Arrange the images into page layouts with a diverse range of garments included.

Stages of work required -

1 - Contact Wall and other key suppliers for interviews about their relationship with students and a general background on their companies.

F E A T U R E D - P H O T O S H O O T S

2 - Execute interview, take some photographs to include with the write up. Create page layouts with text, one page per supplier.

1 - Review semester one collections and choose a diverse range of stand out and intriguing collections to feature in the journal. 5+ students to be selected for this editorial.

B

2 - Create mood boards and story boards for each collection to generate a basic idea of shoot ideas and aesthetics. A mix of studio and on location shoots will be included to create more diversity in the journal. 3 - Extensively plan the first shoot with a clear vision of ideas. Arrange photographer, stylists, a date and location / studio and styling pieces.

5 - Add text. Interview the designer, include their inspirations, concept ideas, conceptual thinking, experimentation exploration and looking forward questions. Complete a short yet eloquent article to accompany the collection images. 6 - Enquire for feedback and developments from lecturers. Repeat process for next collections.

1 - Research from student’s things they forget and from this find top two. Create a step by step hand written guide explaining the task, e.g. “How to.. Sew a fly” or “How to.. Thread an Over locker“. 2 - Create or source someone to complete a hand illustrated image appropriate to the guide.

1 - Weekly snapshots of candid studio life. Keeping a camera on hand is key, do I want to shoot in film or digital? Experiment.

4 - Complete photoshoot and post production editing, compiling the images into a strong visual story for the journal pages. Create pages.
