Rivendell 5 Pursuits Program Brochure

Our pursuit of God as the cornerstone of all educational efforts and Wisdom as our chief goal.

Our pursuit of mankind as agents with unique capacities for creational stewardship.

To start this journey, you will learn the Rivendell Critical Thinking and Reading Method – a selflearning process that acts as the key to unlocking all the courses and materials to come. In addition you will learn the foundations of writing and speaking. Along the way you will ask and answer fundamental questions like, “What is Truth” and “how do we know when we find it?” or “What is reason’s role in our learning” and “How do we become better critical thinkers?” As the beginning modules of your Rivendell journey this time will also focus on your cohort community—helping you to build friendships that can last a lifetime. You will be with your cohort for your entire experience: serving together, learning together, and growing together. The first leg of your journey ends with a thrust out of the conceptual underpinnings of life into the stuff of life – the physical world!

You will explore current psychological and sociological theories regarding man and families in addition to mankind’s unique creative capacities. You will have the opportunity to ask and answer fundamental questions like “What is man?” and “What is family?” This term takes a far more personal approach with discussion times being divided into even smaller groups in order to facilitate personal application of your discoveries. As the third set of modules in your Rivendell experience, this time will focus on your cohort’s service of the community both internally and externally. You will have opportunity to serve within your cohort and within the larger Twin Cities community. The third leg of your journey ends with a jolt into the organization of large communities – governments and economies!

Our pursuit of Creation as the material from which life operates.

Our pursuit of ordered communities as the place where life is perpetuated and supported.

You will perform feats of mathematical magic as the ancients once did as well as engineering marvels and biological spectacles, all with the goal of both experiencing and experimenting with the physical world. Your classroom experience will take a much more hands-on approach as you adventure out of the four walls to the grand laboratory of the living. In critical reflection on the conclusions reached through lab-work you will enter into contemporary cultural debates surrounding the “meaning of life,” and “origins of the cosmos.” As the second set of modules in your Rivendell experience this time will focus on your manners, etiquette, and respect – hoping to provide you with the ‘soft’ skills that are necessary for success in life long after you leave. The second leg of your journey ends by zooming in on one of creation’s most unique creatures – human beings!

You will visit houses of government and examine current policies and practices of both state and federal agencies – seeking to understand what constitutes both a government and an economy, in addition to how to be good participants of both. You will get to ask and answer questions like “What are the principles of good government?” and “How can wealth be managed to produce flourishing?” This term takes on a practical flavor as you discuss everything from personal finances to personal authority. As the final set of modules in your Rivendell experience this time will focus on your next steps as you transition from student to lifelong learner and citizen. Many culminating cohort experiences and lots of memories make this term a bit bittersweet. The final leg of your journey ends with a bang into the next step of your life – learning and citizenship!

During our 16-month program, you will live and learn with the same small group of students and professors throughout your entire time here. You truly experience what it is to be in a community. Your fellow students become more than just friends; they are your confidants. Your professors are more than teachers; they are mentors in all areas of your life. Serve together together, learn together, and grow together.

Nothing can compare to experiencing something firsthand. That’s why, during your time at the Rivendell program, your cohort will spend four to five weeks studying the fine arts in Italy. As a Rivendell student, you’ll walk through Rome’s Colosseum, see the great basilicas of Assisi, tread the same Florentine streets as Michelangelo, and explore the canals of Venice. The best part? The cost for this trip is included as part of your tuition.
