Excellence in ART since 1963.
Dear Friends,
Lindsay Scott, Charlie Boy, 9 x 17 1/2, Colored Pencil. $3,900
Brad Schmidt, Trophy Hunters, 15 x 19, Watercolor. $3,800
We all know the expression “dog days of August.” Well, here at Trailside, we are truly embracing these famous words as we debut “It’s A Dog’s Life” a brand new show devoted to our loyal canine companions. This show is particularly important to me and to my gallery Partner, Roxanne Hofmann, as we are both avid dog lovers and have long been vocal advocates for animal rights. Obviously, the idea of an art show about dogs is not a novel one, but we thought we would put our own unique twist on dog art by featuring new works by our landscape, western, wildlife, figurative and impressionist artists with the caveat that the work must have a dog as part of the subject; mutt, mongrel or pure bred! We know that since ancient times, the unique relationship between man and dog has inspired art. Dogs have been depicted in cave paintings, in mythology and canine imagery can be found in ancient Egypt and China. Dog art was prevalent from the Renaissance through the Victorian period. George Stubbs is credited with having brought animal painting to a whole new level, with his natural and sympathetic imagery of hunting dogs commissioned by British aristocracy. So this is Trailside’s spin on dogs in art, and our gallery artists have brought forth a wonderful new body of work for this event. On a very “pawsitive” note, we are very pleased to be donating a portion of the sales to PAWS of Jackson Hole. On the following pages, I am happy to share their mission statement and a little more information about this wonderful organization. An added bonus during our dog show is a special feature on the world renowned canine and sporting artist Joseph Sulkowski. Sulkowski’s paintings have been described as a fusion of masterful l6th and 17th century Italian and Flemish techniques with a brilliant contemporary flair for expressive brushwork and luminous color that energizes his work. In addition to the new works that will be showing in the gallery, Joseph is also available for personal commissions, so we encourage our dog loving collectors to contact the gallery if they are interested in pursuing a special commission of their own dogs.

continued from page 1... bring more that 100 years of excellence to their award winning furniture designs. Western furniture incorporates nature into its design, using the twists and turns of wood, the rustic charm of antler accents, hand forged iron and the texture of fine leathers to bring form and function to the piece. Whether you call it sophisticated rustic furniture or western or mountain style furniture, collectors from California to New York are embracing these simpler, organic designs and furnishing their homes and offices with furniture that represents a simpler lifestyle and closeness with nature. As always, I encourage you to visit our website where you can view all the artwork featured in the gallery and see our complete summer show schedule. Coming up in September we have our annual FALL GOLD show, several artists’ spotlights and the 6th annual Jackson Hole Art Auction. See you in the gallery! Maryvonne Leshe, Managing Partner

Joseph Sulkowski studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and later the Art Students League in New York. It was at the League that he met his greatest influence and mentor Frank Mason, the foremost American authority on the techniques of the Old Masters. Joseph became his apprentice, learning the traditional principles of painting- preparing his own canvases, grinding pigments to create paint from powdered plants and minerals, and mixing his own mediums and oils using recipes developed by Rembrandt and Rubens. One of the world’s premier equestrian and canine artists, Joseph refers to his style of painting as “poetic realism” an interpretive form inspired by the natural world. Animals, figures and landscapes of sporting life are the subjects that dominate his canvas. His paintings have been described as a fusion of masterful 16th century and 17th century Italian and Flemish techniques with a brilliant contemporary flair for expressive brushwork that energizes his work. His paintings are in exclusive, private collections throughout Europe, North America and the Far East. Joseph is available for private commissions which can be arranged through the gallery.

M a s t e r Ru s t i c F u r n i t u r e M a k e r : J o h n G a l l i s John Gallis has been fashioning custom furniture for over twenty-five years. His heirloom-quality western and rustic pieces have consistently taken honors at the prestigious Western Design Conference and have won numerous other national design awards. John’s work is incomparable and unforgettable. Each piece is custom-designed to fit the client’s needs and handcrafted based on the feel of the wood and the natural flow of the grain, so no two pieces are ever alike. Every piece has to be well thought out, well designed, and well constructed. Some have called John’s style of furniture “refined western.” His furniture is rustic only in the sense that it is made out of mostly unprocessed wood; his attention to detail and his taste for quality give each piece a sophisticated feel.

Only 58 miles east of Yellowstone Park, the natural beauty of Ron’s surroundings offer a wellspring of inspiration which is reflected in his work. Ron spends much of each summer selecting and gathering just the right pieces of wood for his furniture projects.
