WILLIAM PICKERD William Pickerd spent 35 years teaching cabinet and furniture making before embarking on a career turning alabaster. For Bill, life as a teacher, woodworker and artist have all been part of a metamorphosis of a woodworker turned sculptor. His exquisite bowls, each carved from a single block of stone, have translucent walls which are just an eighth of an inch thick, allowing light to penetrate and highlight the veins and natural beauty of the stone. A unique aspect of his work is the use of a narrow wooden edge on the lip of the vessel, most Pueblo Series #10, 9 1/2 x 19, White Italian Alabaster, African Blackwood, Lapis, Sugilite, Silver, Mammoth Ivory, Kingman Turquoise, Coral, and Bois De Rose Rim and Bottom. $16,000
often made of blood wood, African black wood, lace wood or ebony. The wooden rims add reinforcement as well as a visual accent. Bill notes, “After years of working with a wood lathe, the transition to turning alabaster was a natural one for me. As an artist and sculptor whose primary tool is the lathe, I tend to lead toward minimalism. My vessel shapes, turned very thin, allow the stone to reveal prehistoric landscapes that with every touch of the tool continue to amaze me. Bill and his wife reside in Oregon, where the scenic McKenzie River meets the mighty Willamette at the south end of the Willamette Valley.
