Excellence in ART since 1963.
As we welcome the spring season, one is reminded that this is a time of renewal, of all things bright and beautiful. Such is the case for the new collection of paintings by several of our gallery artists who we are featuring in our April showcases. Our annual East Meets West show focuses on works by several prominent Chinese artists, all of whom have found great success here in the west. From Huihan Liu’s jewel colored Tibetan scenes and Calvin Liang’s shimmering seascapes to Jie Wei Zhou and James Jiang’s charming scenes of traditional Chinese family life, our show offers a rich and diverse body of work by theses academically trained artists. Albin Veselka and Jesse Powell are recent additions to the Trailside artist roster and each brings a vibrant and fresh look to the gallery. Albin finds much of the inspiration for his paintings in his Northeastern European roots. The paintings have an old world look, but also have modern elements which bridge the gap between the past and current day.
Jie Wei Zhou, Jianzhi-Health And Prosperity, 36 x 30, Oil, $18,000
Jesse Powell is a California based plein air painter, and while he paints all over the country, from Glacier National Park to the East Coast, his native state offers much of the subject matter for his painterly landscape interpretations. As you can see by the logo at the top of this page, the gallery celebrates its 50th anniversary this year! I know that many of our artists and collectors have already made arrangements to attend the event. A reminder that the show will be hosted during the evening of Friday, August 23 in our Jackson, Wyoming location. It promises to be a very special event and I do hope you can join us. The show will feature new works from our roster of gallery artists as well as a handful of guest artists. More information will be available in the coming months. Please note that our newsletter offers only a sampling of the artwork available in our two gallery locations. Please visit our website to view additional works as well as our show schedule. In April, the gallery is pleased to feature s special show of new works by Albin Veselka. This new collection of work is clearly influenced by his Eastern European roots. His grandfather, who was always a hero in his eyes, was born in a Czech speaking home. Because nearly every trace of his grandfather’s heritage was lost in his assimilation into the American culture, Albin has been intrigued to find and relate to some of that past. Albin notes, “What I admire most aesthetically about the old world is the organic utilitarian aspect of hand made implements and time tested time worn objects. I love the interconnected lives of man and beast involved in working the ground and living the time honored practice of producing with sweat and receiving with gratitude the necessities of daily life. This is still to be found in parts of Northeastern Europe. I find a kind of rare beauty there that contains a good deal of the past centuries and yet has indications of the modern world.” He adds, “I hope this body of work helps the viewer connect with his or her own roots, no matter where they may have come from. I think one of the things most needed in modern culture is a re-connect with the simple wisdom that came from our ancestors and their connection with the realities of nature. Albin currently lives in Rexburg, Idaho with his wife Jenee and their three children.

Born in 1977 in Los Angeles, Jesse Powell has lived most of his life on the California coast where he has developed a deep attachment and respect for a rapidly disappearing natural landscape. A third generation artist, Jesse’s love for art came at an early age, mostly from the influence of his father, nationally recognized artist John Powell. Jesse graduated from the University of Puget Sound with a Bachelors of Fine Arts Degree in painting and drawing, and went on to study Russian Impressionism in the Republic of Georgia under the tutelage of Nicholai Dubovik, Ilya Yatsenko, and John Wurdeman. Grounded in a traditional approach of executing studio paintings from numerous outdoor studies, Jesse’s work has received many awards, and has attracted the attention of major collectors such as Joan Irvine Smith and Jean Stern, the Executive Director of the Irvine Museum, which specializes in historical California Impressionism. His paintings have been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including shows at The Laguna Art Museum, The Pasadena Museum of California History, The Pasadena Museum of California Art, and The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. He is an artist member of the Oil Painters of America and the American Impressionist Society and a Signature Member of the California Art Club and the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association.
