APRIL 2014

DEAR FRIENDS, It has been some 15 years now since the gallery first began representing artists from the Chinese mainland. These painters brought a whole new dynamic to the gallery with their strict, formal, academic training. Just as important, they also brought an unabashed enthusiasm that comes from having the opportunity to paint whatever subjects they were passionate about; something that up until the demise of the Cultural Revolution in 1976 would have been strictly verboten. The chance to travel west, literally opened up a whole new world to these artists and they were quick to seize the opportunity to move to the Western Hemisphere and pursue their artistic visions. Our April newsletter is dedicated to highlighting the newest works from these exceptional painters. Mian Situ, who joined the gallery in 2000, was among the first of these Chinese artists to find a solid niche in the world of western representational art, due in large part to his magnificent, historical paintings which tell the story of Chinese immigrants helping to settle the American west. Since then, the gallery has had the good fortune to sign on a handful of superb Chinese painters whose works have captured the attention of our diverse collector base. Huihan Liu, with his beautiful palette, brings us elegant scenes of celebrations and daily life among Mian Situ, Her Big Brother, 24 x 20 inches, Oil, $14,800 Chinese, Tibetan and Mongolian tribes. Jie Wei Zhou, a master realist whose brushwork sings with a radiant impressionistic quality, paints the rich costumes and cultures of the Tibetan, Miao and other minority cultures in China. California based Calvin Liang, who is originally from Canton, has completely immersed himself in the West Coast lifestyle and over the years has become highly sought after for his coastal and sailing scenes which are rich in color and luminosity. The paintings of James Jiang explore the traditions and village life of southwest China, particularly the Miao and Tibetan people, but life in Arizona has also inspired him to capture imagery of the Southwest, including cowboy life and Navajo subjects. I invite you to visit our Scottsdale gallery and view these newest works during our annual East Meets West show which will hang throughout the month of April. This event, now in its 9th year, provides a powerful platform to showcase these artists who so brilliantly meld strong academic foundations with their unique, ancient heritage and more recent western influences. Kind Regards, Maryvonne Leshe Managing Partner Huihan Liu, Holiday Gathering, 30 x 24 inches, Oil, $20,000
