June 2014
As we bring you our latest newsletter, the summer art season in Jackson Hole is well under way. Featured in the gallery throughout the month of June is our annual High Country Summer show, which features all new works from our entire roster of artists. The selection of artwork is quite expansive, with great diversity in subject matter and stylistic approaches. I find that collectors are drawn to this event specifically because it offers such a wide range of artwork. Today, western art is no longer defined just by images that convey cowboys or horses or Native American themes. Indeed, over the years, the western art genre has expanded to include landscape, still life, wildlife, figurative, sporting art and even more contemporary designs. I whole-heartedly believe this has been a very healthy movement for the American western art market in general, as it keeps things fresh and now draws the attention of a younger generation of collectors who have found new appreciation for the intrinsic value and historic significance of the genre. New to the scene in our Jackson Hole gallery this season are two artists we have just recently started representing. Richard Hall is a British born painter who makes his home Jenness Cortez, The Color Of Night, 24 x 18 inches, Acrylic, $43,000 in Arizona. Hall brings a decidedly different look to the gallery with his traditional, yet often times whimsical paintings. Over many decades as a painter, he has developed a signature look that is truly his own. Whether a large-scale landscape or an intimate still life, his paintings are instantly recognizable, as you will see from the images featured in our newsletter. Utah based Santiago Michalek, who is originally from Argentina, brings a more contemporary vibe with his paintings that are all about planes, trains and automobiles. Capturing subtleties in the interplay of light on metal and paint, Michalek captures the allure and iconic imagery associated with these vintage vehicles. Looking ahead towards the rest of the summer, we have a full show schedule that you will find listed here for reference. I look forward to having you attend one of our events or drop by the gallery if your travel plans this summer bring you to Jackson Hole. Alternatively, I would encourage you to not only visit out website, but also to visit our gallery across the various Social Media platforms including Face Book, Twitter and Pintrest where we have developed a strong following of art enthusiasts! Santiago Michalek's artistic ability presented itself early in life, following the influence of his grandfather, who introduced him to drawing. Michalek warmly recalls how, as a child, he and his grandfather drew horses while sitting on the veranda of his childhood home. Those intimate moments sparked a lifelong passion in Michalek, who has been advancing his craft as an artist and a painter ever since.

In 2003, he started his own business; restoring vintage models of Volkswagen beetles and buses. He successfully turned his hobby of tinkering and love for VWs into a profitable business with multiple restoration projects. He also began to notice that VW owners shared a certain common quirk: each was completely devoted to Volkswagen vehicles, often passionately so. This fierce devotion resonated with Michalek, whose fondness for VWs compelled him to become a master on the vehicles, with a near encyclopedic knowledge of their makes and models throughout the car company's history. This in turn has led him to capture some of these iconic auto images on canvas. Though Michalek's VW paintings naturally reflect his love for the car, he also enjoys painting and drawing a broad range of subjects including vintage planes, trains and tractors.

Richard Hall was born in the industrial heart of northern England. After earning his post-graduate teaching degree he left England for warmer climates, ending up in the Southwest United States with his wife Sharon, where he pursued painting full-time. Hall has been painting all of his life, creating works of art in a wide variety of styles. He worked many years in the Fine Art Publishing business, creating large bodies of works for clients. The styles would range from classical to geometric to romantic depending on the client’s needs. In 2006 he made the decision to pursue his life-long love of traditional painting and to create a body of work that was truly his own. Over many decades as a painter Hall has developed his signature look. Whether a large scale landscape or an intimate still life, his paintings are instantly recognizable. Characterized by a lack of visible brush strokes, thoughtful (sometimes whimsical) compositions, and realistic textures, his paintings glow with a brilliant luminescent quality.
