User Responsibilities 1. Users must use protective covers/cases for their iPad. a. The iPad screen is made of glass and therefore is subject to cracking and breaking if misused: Never drop nor place heavy objects (books, laptops, etc.) on top of the iPad. 2. Only a soft cloth or approved laptop screen cleaning solution is to be used to clean the iPad screen. 3. Do not subject the iPad to extreme heat or cold. 4. Do not store or leave unattended in vehicles or around school. 5. Users may not photograph any other person, without that persons’ consent.

iPad Best Practices for Classroom Use 1. Establish procedures and expectations for passing out iPads, using them in class, and returning. a. Disseminating i. Assigning specific iPads to students. b. In-class Use i. Do NOT change the settings! ii. Do not send emails from the iPad unless instructed to do so. iii. Do not use the camera or the video camera without permission. iv. Do not add or delete applications. v. Use as a tool, not a toy! vi. Stay on task! c. Returning i. Close all applications when you are finished! ii. Power it off when you are done! iii. Replace cover and return to iPad crate. 2. Mirroring with Apple TV or Airserver a. Establish procedures for using Airplay b. Create a password for the Apple TV 3. Safeguarding and Maintaining as an Academic Tool a. iPad batteries are required to be charged and be ready to use in school. b. Managing applications will be maintained by a School administrator. c. Items deleted from the iPad cannot be recovered. d. Memory space is limited. Academic content takes precedence over personal files and apps. e. iPads belonging to other users are not to be tampered within any manner.

iPad Tips and Tricks 1. Create Folders To create a folder all you need to do is tap and hold on an app until they all start to jiggle, then drag the app over another icon and release. Your iPad will create a folder with both the apps in it. The folder will be named according to the category of the apps it contains, but you can rename it as you like by typing over the name.

2. Access the Multi-tasking Bar Double-clicking the Home button or using a four finger swipe upward gesture to show all the apps that are running on your iPad. The multi-tasking bar will appear at the bottom of the screen. To switch to a different application, tap on it in this bar. Just swipe the screen downwards to remove this bar.

3. Lock Rotation If you would like to prevent the iPad from changing from landscape to portrait orientation, access the Multi-tasking Bar and swipe the bar to the right. Then set the iPad’s screen rotation to the locked position.

4. Take an iPad Screenshot You can take a screenshot on your iPad by pressing Home and then the Sleep/Wake (Power) button. The screen will flash and you'll hear a click, indicating that a photo has been taken. Your screen shots are saved automatically in your Photos gallery. Here, you can view, email, upload them to social networking sites as you see fit.

5. Use Multitasking Gestures Multitasking Gestures, which utilize four and five finger gestures to let you switch between apps, to bring up the multitasking bar, and to close an app and go back to the Home screen. You can turn them on in Settings > General, but be warned that they clash with

some apps.

6. Turn iPad caps lock on

To type a capital letter on the onscreen keyboard you first tap the left or right shift key, then the letter. If you need to type a whole word in caps, this can be painful. Save time typing in caps by turning the caps lock on by double tapping on either shift key.

7. Copy and paste You can quickly copy and paste text by tapping and holding down, and then choosing Select to select the exact portion of text you'd like the copy. Next tap Copy, then go to a different app, and tap and hold down again, then tap Paste from the menu that appears. Top tip: To select an entire paragraph of text you need to tap four times.

8. Autocorrect Autocorrect will try to replace spelling errors or words that it doesn’t recognize with recommended words. If you approve of the change, continue typing as it will automatically replace your word with the one it chooses. If you don’t want to select the recommended word, then tap the x. Remember: Autocorrect can impact your intended meaning, so pay attention and reread emails BEFORE you send them. 9. Hidden Keys on the Keyboard This is a great tip for any app, such as Notes, Pages, or Mail, that you type into using the iPad's virtual keyboard. Rather than having to go to the second screen of

the keyboard every time you want to type an apostrophe (which is a real pain) just tap and hold on the ! key and a hidden apostrophe option will appear - then just slide your finger up to access it. The ? key has quotes. Look for other hidden keys. 10. Dim your iBooks You can lower the brightness setting down to a low level using the Brightness option under Settings. But the iBooks app has its own brightness slider, which you can use to lower the level down more conveniently.

11. Display PDFs There are two ways to display PDFs on your iPad: you can either email them to your iPad, in which case you get an Open in iBooks button appear, or you can sync PDFs from your Mac or PC via the Books tab in iTunes. To do this just drag and drop the PDF into iTunes, then when you sync your iPad click on the Books tab and select the PDFs you'd like to sync. In iBooks you click on PDFs in your library to see the PDFs you have ready to display.

12.Quicker access to websites Save time typing web addresses in Safari by using the iPad's ".com" key when typing in a URL. Another hidden key can be found if you hold down the .com key you get access to a menu that offers a .edu, .us, .org, .net and other options too.

13. Zoom in on websites You can zoom in on any website by pinching out with two fingers on the screen. This also makes it easier to select words and tap links. To zoom out again, just pinch in with two fingers. You can also double-tap on any text or image to autozoom so it fills the iPad screen.

14. Find text on a page You can search for a particular word on an open page in Safari. Type your word into the Google search box. You'll see a list of suggestions appear, and near the bottom you'll see "On This Page", showing how many times that word appears on the page. Tap the Find option to go to the first instance of the word.

15. Make an iPad backup If you want to make sure your iPad's data is properly backed up then you can force iTunes to back it up. When you're connected to your Mac or PC, open up iTunes and right-click on your iPad in the Devices list and select Back-up. However,

you can also use iCloud to back up. Turn this on in Settings > iCloud. When you do so, your iPad will stop automatically backing up to your PC.

Salisbury School’s App-pack

I want to find an easier way to find an app:  AppStart (Free/.99) AppStart introduces you to apps and provides you with step-by-step instructions on how to fully utilize the apps themselves. I want to find an app to manage my class more efficiently:  Teacher’s Kit (Free) Take attendance; track grades and behavior for your students. Set up a profile for each student that can even include information such as allergies. You can email parents and/or students directly from the app. Import .csv files. You can link and back up to your Dropbox account. I want my students to create & publish video:  iMovie (4.99) - record, edit and publish movies directly to the web from iMovie. Web publishing choices include YouTube and Vimeo. The most helpful feature is the "voice-over" option which allows students to narrate footage or images included in their films.  Pinnacle Studio (4.99)  Vimeo (free) - a helpful free alternative to iMovie. The vimeo app allows you to record, edit and publish video to a vimeo account. There are not as many editing options, but this is a helpful free alternative.  Reel Director (1.99) I want my students to demonstrate their understanding by screencasting:  ExplainEverything (2.99) - The best screen app available that includes the ability to import content from multiple cloud storage accounts including Dropbox. Also, the ability to start, save and return to a project makes this app perfect for extended projects. Once complete, a screencast can be published directly to YouTube or uploaded to a number of cloud services.  EduCreations (free) - a flexible option that allows screencasts to be created from either an iPad or from a web based account on a computer. A helpful option includes the ability to create classes, enroll students and publish screencasts to a "class" within the Educreations website.  ScreenChomp (free) - with a stripped down interface, this platform is ideal for younger students as there is no account required to created screencasts.  ShowMe (free) - another great alternative for younger students that also provides the ability to publish directly to YouTube. I want my students to respond to polls / take quizzes:  Socrative (teacher & student app - free) - This free platform allows for teachers to create and begin quizzes directly from an iPad. Using the teacher app, teachers can initiate a quiz and students can enter the teacher's "room" in the student app. It may be easier to create quizzes from a computer by going to t.socrative.com  Polleverywhere (free - web based) - While not specifically an iPad app, this polling platform formats perfectly for web based voting on an iPad. A helpful tip, create a customized Polleverywhere URL that your students can visit through a browser on the iPad to receive the poll question that is being "pushed out" from the teacher account.

I want my students to edit images:  Skitch (free) - An extremely easy and intuitive image editing app allows you to insert shapes, arrows and text on any image that is saved to the iPad camera roll. Once edited, images can be exported to the camera roll or sent directly to an Evernote account.  Visualize (.99) - An more advanced option, Visualize allows Photoshop like features without the Photoshop price. Layer images, cutout portions of images and create customized, layered content on an iPad. Images can then be exported to the camera roll for use in other apps.  Photoshop Touch (9.99) - A bit pricey for occasional classroom use, but allows for extremely advanced editing. Layer, cutout and add a number of effects to any image. The learning curve is a bit steep, but the finished product can't be beat. (The image of the app-pack was created using Photoshop Touch on an iPad) I want my students to tell digital stories:  VoiceThread (free) - The most well-known, collaborative digital storytelling app is now available on the iPad. Create, comment, publish and share presentations directly from an iPad. The one limitation is that commenting features and publishing options can't be adjusted from the iPad app, that can only be done from a computer.  Animoto (free) - While a bit more restrictive in terms of the finished product, Animoto offers a quick alternative as an entry level digital storytelling platform.  Video Scribe HD (4.99) - A relatively new app that allows you to create RSA Animate style digital stories with both background music and voice-over narration. I want my students to create a digital notebook:  Evernote (free) - Hands down this is the best digital note-taking platform on the iPad. Create typed, image or audio notes directly within the app and organize the content into shareable notebooks. Tie in Skitch to include edited images and Penultimate for hand written notes. Notes can also be search later by notebook, date, or tag words.

I want my students to keep hand written notebooks / sketchbooks:  Paper by 53 (free & in-app upgrades 6.99) - The most life like simulation of writing in a paper notebook on an iPad. The app itself is free, but to have access to all of the writing tools (water color & various pen options, an in-app upgrade is required...but well worth it!)  Penultimate (.99) - A less expensive alternative that ties directly into Evernote. Very accurate feel when create hand written digital notes.

I want to use my iPad as a document camera:  Board Cam (free / Pro - 4.99) - Shoot a live image of anything in the classroom and create annotations directly on the image. Connect the iPad directly to a projector or use in conjunction with Reflection to create a wireless setup.  CamDraw (.99) I want to use my iPad as a tablet / wirelessly project:  Airserver (Mac / PC download - $5-15- Wirelessly mirror an iPad to a MacBook or PC. Airserver is downloaded to a laptop computer that is wired into the VGA cable on the projector and when

an iPad is on the same wireless network, the Airplay option on an iPad allows for the iPad to be sent to the screen of the laptop. Apple TV ($99) - A pricier alternative to Reflection with the same outcome. When both devices are on the same wireless network, an iPad can be mirrored to the Apple TV with Airplay. One limitation is that the Apple TV only uses HDMI connections and most school projectors are VGA input, thus requiring an HDMI to VGA adaptor. Air Sketch (free / 9.99) - Unlike the two above options that use Airplay to mirror out an iPad screen, Air Sketch creates a unique URL for each iPad. Enter that URL into a browser on a classroom laptop that is connected to a projector and the iPad is now wirelessly projected. The free app allows for a blank screen and black pen, while the full version allows for presentations to be mirrored out.

I want my students to create Podcasts & publish audio online:  Garage Band (4.99) - Record, edit and publish audio content from the iPad. This app is great for student interview and podcasting projects. Publishing options include both YouTube and SoundCloud.  Sound Cloud (free) - Publish audio directly to the web from the SoundCloud app. Audio is immediately available online at the SoundCloud website. There is no editing option available from the app.

I want my students to use and share flashcards:  Mental Case Classroom Edition (Free) Mental Case on the iPad has built-in support forFlashcardExchange.com and Quizlet.com, the World’s largest online repositories of study cards. You can download study cards made by others from Flashcard Exchange or Quizlet even if you don’t have an account there. If you sign up for a free account, you can create your own flashcards on the web site, and download them in Mental Case. Whether you want to learn Chinese or famous Churches, Flashcard Exchange and Quizlet give you great free content at the tap of a finger.  Cramberry - Create flash cards to study from. I want my students to write papers / word process:  Pages (9.99) - Apple's word processing app that allows for creating of typed content that can be exported as a Pages, Word or PDF file from the iPad via email. Also, Word documents can be opened and edited within Pages. Exporting options are limited.  CloudOn (free) - This free alternative allows users to create both Word and PowerPoint files on the iPad that can then be sent directly to a Dropbox account.  Google Docs (free) - While Google Docs isn't the easiest writing platform to work with on the iPad, it is a bit better within the Google Chrome app. When used in conjunction with the Google Drive app, documents can quickly be shared with other Google Drive users.  iA Writer (1.99) I want my students to annotate course readings (PDFs):  Notability (.99) - Full PDF annotation, include images and insert text into notes.  GoodNotes (free) Allows students to take notes on PDFs  GoodReader (4.99) With GoodReader on your iPad, you can read virtually anything, anywhere: books, movies, maps, pictures. Use it once and you’ll be hooked. If you work with documents,

soon you'll be wondering how you ever managed to use your iPad or iPhone without GoodReader . SmartNote to annotate PDF's they can add text, writing, hand draw, record voice add widgets and then save to Dropbox or email pages :) great app with a free and paid version.

I want my students to create digital books:  Book Creator (4.99) - This digital book creation platform allows a creator to easily create a digital book with text, images, audio and video from the iPad camera roll. There are a number of cloud based exporting functions and both an ePub and PDF version of the book can be exported from the app. 

Creative Book Builder (3.99) - Quite similar to Book Creator, however this app allows for Google Docs to be imported into a book and chapters and sections can be created within the final product.

I want my students to individually interact with my presentation: 

NearPod (Free) and as the teacher you create a presentation and then the students on their iPad's log into that presentation. You can include video, images, quizzes, polls, text and drawing activities. The teacher app on the iPad moves the presentations along on the students’ iPads and you get all their results which can be exported or printed in report format.

I want my students to go paperless: 

DropBox (Free) Dropbox is a free service that lets you bring all your photos, docs, and videos anywhere. After you install Dropbox on your computer, any file you save to your Dropbox will automatically save to all your computers, your iPhone and iPad and even the Dropbox website!
