LETTER
eing a motor enthusiast and having taken part in organising various motor shows in the country like the Street One motor shows, including having to attend many other motor sport shows, events and meetings in the auto industry, has given me a great opportunity to mingle and interact with various people from various sectors of the auto industry. Not only locally, but including people from other neighboring countries like Zimbabwe. These people include consumers, motor sport fans, works shops, company owners, suppliers and many other types of people. This has been a very good experience for me. The most interesting experience, being the exposer I have had to auto enthusiasts out there with a lot of talent and skill in customisation and motor sport and how they have been combining this, which is an indescribable experience. Customisation and motorsport, which are both growing at a faster rate in the country with a really high fan base. You would be amazed to see what many youths out there are up to and their abilities when it comes to customisation. If you have attended any of the motor shows in the country especially the Street one motor shows held by Street one motor club and the “Show and Shine” event held by Midnight Club Lusaka, you are my witness to it all. Their works and creativity levels are good. Unfortunately, the down side of it all is that their talent is not being supported and promoted much by the local people. However, with the customisation segment we are hoping to expose this talent more to help it grow and with the hope of having many other people take part in it, to unveil their talent. When it comes to the rise of motoring events in the country, there are some events that have captured the hearts of many Zambians in the country including people and entities from foreign countries. These motoring events comprise of Drifting and Burn outs. The love for the sport is shown from the massive turn out of people to these events. However, this currently drew attention to some entities in our neighboring countries, which led to the invite of the motor clubs in the country to participate in the ZAF – Zimbabwe Auto Festival which was held in August. Apart from all this, the magazine is meant to serve as a guide as to what is new in auto industry, company reviews, Auto reviews and many other interesting articles revolving the auto industry both local and international. Hope you enjoy reading this first issue.

SPORTS CARS ON A BUDGET Sexiness, Power and comfortability. Accompanied by luxury makes the ideal sports car that most people dream of. Want it all without sacrificing one part of it? But on a tight budget. Well below are some sports cars that might meet your budget. With the limit of $40k
SPORTS CARS
Ah, the 370Z is a force to be reckoned with and its lowest two trim levels fall right in line with our budget. Unfortunately, the Nismo model fell just outside of the $40K limit. The base level 370Z comes in at $32,280 and the Touring trim comes in at $36,980, leaving wiggle room to even include taxes within our budget range. Both trim levels use a 332 horsepower 3.7-liter V-6, which also churns out 270 pound-feet of torque. Much like the Infiniti G Coupe, which the 370Z shares its engine with, this 3.7-liter is very loud under full throttle, which knocks it down a notch or two. It makes up for that with a respectable 5.1-second sprint to 60 mph. To boot, it also gets 18 to 19 mpg in the city and 25 to 26 mpg on the highway. It stops well too, getting from 60 mph to 0 in only 101 feet, and it handles like a sports car should. The body is stunning and looks reminiscent of Z-cars from yesteryear, while maintaining a modern edge. It’ll be hard for any car to beat out the 370Z, but we’re sure there are plenty that are up to the task.
NISSAN 370Z
The Mazda MX-5 Miata is one of those cars that always gets a nod when comparing budget-friendly sports cars. It has never been a speed demon, but it has always boasted a high power-to-weight ratio and precision handling. The 2012 model bases out at $23,470 and ranges to up to $31,225. All models boast the same 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that pumps out a decent 167 horsepower at 7,000 rpm (158 horsepower in the automatic transmission) and 140 pound-feet of torque at 5,000 rpm. One complaint is that the base model only comes with a 5-speed manual. To get a 6-speed, you have to bump up to the Touring or Grand Touring model. The 2012 Miata gets to 60 mph in a respectable 6.9 seconds, but critics rave about its handling, as usual. The gas mileage is very nice, for a sports car, as it gets 22 mpg city and 28 mpg highway with the 5-speed manual, whereas the 6speed manual and automatic options drop it by 1 mpg. The interior is often praised as being tight, yet comfortable, and the gauges are all well placed. The biggest downfall to the MX-5 Miata is the fact that it only gives you 5.3 cubic-feet of trunk space. Then again, why are you hauling luggage and cargo in a Miata? All that does is throw off you weight distribution.
ECLIPSE
REVIEW
MIATA MX-5
Though they are getting tougher to come by, as they are being phased out, the Eclipse has to have a spot on this list. Starting off as low as $19,499 and capping off at about $29,000, the Eclipse fits the “Budget sports car” term nicely. The Eclipse has certainly packed on some pounds over its years, but it is still a serviceable budget sports car and its latest body style returned it to somewhat of its former sexy self. It comes standard with a lackluster 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that pumps out only 162 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. The top end GT trim level is much more respected, as its 3.8-liter V-6 pushes out 265 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. Regardless, all of those performance numbers are seriously low for the engine size, as a 4-cylinder of that size should crest the 180-horsepower mark and that 3.8-liter powerplant needs at least 300 horsepower. The 4-cylinder model is available with a 5-speed manual transmission and the GT comes only with a 5-speed shiftable automatic. The 4-cylinder-equipped Eclipse gets 20 mpg city and 28 mpg highway and the V-6 models get a relatively low 17 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. The GT model can muscle to 60 mph in about 6.5 seconds, though there are some tests that show sub-6-second times. We can’t dig up any 0 to 60 times on the 2.4-liter model, so we’ll just say that it’s “slow.” We are figuring it to time out at about 9 seconds, at best, we may just have to dig one up somewhere and test drive it to see. BIKE REVIEW
REVIEW
Are you a motorbike enthusiast? Are looking to buy a motor bike? Are you on a tight budget but still want style? From the bikes below you might just find what suits you best.
Rolling on two The One To Buy Honda SP-1 £4,000 - £6,000 The Honda SP-1 was a homologation special for the masses that failed to attract the attention, or sales, it deserve to. Built in response to Ducati’s domination of the WSB series, Honda basically designed a Japanese 916 to prove that they could win if they were racing on an equal footing. With Texan Colin Edwards at the controls the SP-1 won the title in its first year in WSB and then repeated this accomplishment two years later when the updated SP-2 was launched. But why did it fail to set showrooms alight? In 2000 the SP-1 (or RC51 as it was also known) cost £9,999, which was seen as too expensive for a Japanese mass produced bike. It also came with a fairly primitive and jerky fuel injection system and a peanut for a petrol tank. While over a decade later the fuel injection and tank size are still crap, the value is far more in line with the rest of the market. In fact the SP-1 is a bargain! For £4,000 you get an HRC designed V-twin superbike with bullet proof reliability, excellent build quality and a real exclusivity about it. The handling is sublime, sound with race cans breath taking and when you fit Power Commander to sort the fuelling the V-twin engine is a real gem. Although the tank range is still terrible!
The American Option Buell 1125R £2,500 - £4,500 The 1125R was the final bike that American maverick Erik Buell built before Harley-Davidson pulled the plug on Buell Motorcycles. The company’s only water-cooled machine, the R (as well as the café racer CR) uses an Austrian-built Rotax V-twin motor in a Buell chassis. Owning a Buell comes with its own set of issues such as reliability and lack of spare parts, but it is different and the engine is strong. Possibly a bike for the brave but it is a talking point…
The classy Japanese inline four option Yamaha YZF-R1 £3,500-£4,000 This will be nudging the top end of the £4,000 budget but the first generation of ‘underseat pipe’ R1s are starting to drop in price. A superb looking bike the 2004 onwards model has a motor that is a bit rev-happy, however with a claimed 172bhp on tap you are guaranteed thrills. The Yamaha is very well built, reliable and there are quite a few around second hand so you can search out a bargain. Not the most exclusive machine on the market, but a fine performer.
The hooligan Japanese inline four option Suzuki GSX-R1000 K4 £3,500-£4,000 The K4 is the second generation of the GSX-R1000 and comes with radial brakes, titanium nitrided black forks sliders and a cool looking single headlight. Slightly more refined than the original K1 model, the K4 still has a fearsome motor that is thrilling to ride with a raw feel and nature about it. Finish isn’t great on the Suzuki but it has bags of character and there are quite a few to choose from. Surprisingly the K4 is also very practical as it is comfortable and has a fairly relaxed riding position. Bike Chooser AGC 14 AUTO GUIDE CONNECT . SEPTEMBER—OCTOBER

BMW MOTOR SPORT CLUB ZAMBIA Miracle men
Y
ou must be wondering why that heading “BMW Motorsport Club Zambia Miracle men”, well this article will answer that question ringing in your head. I am sure many of us have had the chance to have a look at the BMW Motorsport Club Zambia roam the streets of Lusaka in a convoy once or twice. But do know who they really are?
The club was originally founded in early 2013, following a few drift events which were held in Lusaka. Very few individuals with BMW cars took part in these events. However ever since the initiative was shared amongst other BMW owners, it has been a non-stop positive movement since then. About BMW Motorsport Club Z ambia
Well BMW Motorsport Club Zambia is a motor club that has been formally in existence since October2013, last year with the vision To become the official BMW car enthusiast social club in Zambia. With the mission To enable BMW car owners to have access to any spare parts required to maintain and fully customize their beloved BMW vehicles from aesthetics to performance.
B
MW Motorsport Club Zambia is a social club for Lovers of the beautifully crafted and well engineered BMW vehicles. We provide a platform for BMW owners to meet and share ideas and great stories about how these machines have affected our personal lives. Strictly for BMW Enthusiasts. However what differentiates us from the rest is that we are highly

passionate about our cars which have all been part of our families. We currently have approximately 20 committed members. Our vehicles range from the Legendary BMW E30 to the BMW X5. We live by the creed "Built
Not
Bought".
This implies that we built our cars in our backyards, into the machines that they are today! We modify them from standard road cars, into performance cars. And when we perform, we do not hold back! Our motto is; "Kill
ALL Tyres".
This means we burn rubber until the tyres blow out! Although the club consists of members with various mechanical and auto electrical skills, as a club, we currently do not explicitly offer services to the general public however we do share advice on how to repair vehicles depending on the model.
Bmw Motor sport Zambia has worked on several projects most of which have been restorations and engine upgrades. From here we follow their projects as they explain what they have worked on from their first project to other projects they have worked on. AGC: What was the first ever project you worked on? BMW Motorsport club: “The first project we worked on as a club was the restoration of a BMW E36 325. This included full body works, suspension and differential upgrades. The engine was also worked on to install forced induction for better performance. This vehicle is now popularly known as “Problem Child” owned by the man we call the “Undisputed Dolphin
King.”
Problem Child: BEFORE 16 AUTO GUIDE CONNECT . SEPTEMBER—OCTOBER
Problem Child: AFTER
AGC: Have you worked on any special
projects? BMW Motorsport club: There have been a number of special projections worked on, a number of restorations and two engine upgrades. The restorations were done on the BMW E34, E36 and E30 models. These included full body and engine restorations, including change of colour. The two engine upgrades were from an E30 and E34 series. The E30 engine upgrade was from a 2.0litre engine to a 2.7IS. This included the differential and computer box upgrade. The E34 engine upgrade was from a 3.0litre engine to a 3.5litre engine. The images below show the restoration and engine upgrades of two E30s.
The “Big Fish”
The photos ABOVE show the restorations of two E34 models. We call these; The “Big Fish”
AGC: What would you say
is the best project you have ever worked on? BMW Motorsport club: There are two projects we would nominate in this category, due to their complexity. The first project was carried out on the BMW E34 5 series model. This was an engine upgrade from a 3.5litre to an M-Spec engine from a Z3 M-Coupe. This motor boasts a 3.2 litre with approximately 330BHP capacity. The installation was complicated due the electronics. The fuel pump functionality was quite complex to achieve due to the type of wiring. This required expert consultations from BMW forums on the Internet. The project duration was roughly one month.
The photos below show the engine before and after installation and customisation.
The image on the right shows part of the engine after a cherry red powder coat. 17 AUTO GUIDE CONNECT . SEPTEMBER—OCTOBER
Continued‌. The second special project is one to be proud of. It is not yet known whether this has been done before but dare we say, we just may have been the first in Zambia, to achieve this! This was the installation of a 535 engine from the E34 into the body of an E30. This installation was both technically and mechanically challenging. The 535 motor is significantly longer, taller and needless to say, heavier! The modifications which were made in order for this to be a success included cutting, grinding and welding parts of the body, in order for the engine to fit. A new exhaust line was installed. The exhaust system was fitted with Bosal boosters and muffler. A job well done by the one and only Kelvin Exhaust Systems.
AGC:: What are some of the challenges you faced during the project?
BMW Motorsport club: The main challenges faced with this project were; 1. Length: The 535 engine is longer than all other engine types originally fitted in the E30. Fitting this engine was particularly tricky due to the positions of the engine mounts. The position of the gearbox was not an issue as the body was made with provisions for varies positions for the gearbox crossmember. The propeller shaft had to be cut in order to reduce
the length due to the new position of the gearbox. This was accurately done using a length machine in order to avoid vibrations when the car is moving. 2. Height: Similarly to the length, the 535 is taller due to the throttle bracket and also position of the expansion tank (water bottle). This challenge meant we had to play around with the crossmember. As the original cross member could not be used due to the position of the engine mounts, we had to install a second crossmember at the front of the chassis. The position of this crossmember had to be modified in a clever way because the engine had to be lowered due to the height. However, we had to make sure the newly installed crossmember did not reduce the ride height as we had to ensure that the oil sump was high enough from the ground so that the car could easily drive over speed humps. 3. Weight: The weight of the 535 engine is one that had to be carefully considered. The newly installed crossmember had to be strong enough to support the engine. It was modified to enable the engine to sit safely but at the same time provide structural strength to the chassis. This is why the original crossmember was not removed. In addition to this, the position of the engine had to be considered due to weight distribution to avoid understeer of the car
18 AUTO GUIDE CONNECT . SEPTEMBER—OCTOBER
during cornering. With an engine this big and heavy, the suspension had to be considered. However this particular E30 was already fitted with extremely strong front end springs and long shocks. Astonishingly, the suspension maintained the ride height even after completion of the installation. The weight of the engine also has an effect on the brakes of the car. These had to be upgraded. The BMW 3series T.I version or Z3 coupe suspension and braking system were options for this installation. 4. Cooling: The 535 motor is known to operate at very high temperatures. This is why one has to be clever with the type of radiator they use. A fan clutch could not be used on this engine due to the power of the motor as it has a chipped computer box which further enhances the power delivery. The blades and fan belts could be damaged. To avoid this, an electric fan had to be installed to ensure the cooling was sufficient. As mentioned earlier, the 535 is long therefore, modification to the structure of the body had to be made, in order to create space for the radiator and electric fan. The front-end of the car had to be modified to allow more air intake.
The photos below show the progress of this project from a 2.7 I.S engine to the newly installed 535 engine.
Project duration was approximately 3 weeks. However, more modifications are yet to be done to turn this machine into a serious powerhouse! Future modifications include a turbo and intercooler installation, M-spec gearbox and differential.
AGC: Tell us about the awards you have won in the past BMW Motorsport club: There have not been many car competitions run here in Zambia, however during the first ever show and shine competition, we won the category for best overall car. This was awarded to us for the works done on the E34 5 series. The one we call “The TA-TA”.
AGC: Where do you see yourselves in five years’ time? BMW Motorsport club: We intend to transform the club into a fully functional and well recognised BMW repair and customization company. AGC: What should people expect from you? BMW Motorsport club: What should people expect from you?

AGC: What are your thoughts
on customisation in the country and its future. BMW Motorsport club: Customisation in the country is getting more and more advanced. There are a lot of private garages and individuals doing this. 10 Ways To Make Your Car Go Faster By - Autocraft Tuning Zambia
H
ave you ever thought?
“How can I make my car faster?” If so, this article is for you. Today we look at the first 5 ways to get your ride gain some extra horses and go faster. We all want to go faster, every one of us. But the big question is, how can I make my car faster and what’s the best way to do it? And what are the best ways to spend your hard-earned cash. 1. LOOK AFTER IT! Regular servicing, including changing the various fluids and filters, is vital if you want to keep your car delivering the performance it was designed to give. Not only that, but on tuned motors it’s a good idea to take your car to a respected tuner once a year so, as well as regular servicing, they can check and adjust fuel and boost pressures, ignition timing, and if necessary, the mapping of the car’s ECU to keep the car running at peak performance. It’s not unusual for some cars to need quite large adjustments, even when they seem to be running perfectly fine. In the past I have seen gains of extra horses just from adjusting the ignition timing to its optimum. 2. LET IT BREATHE! Almost all cars come with restrictive
inlet and exhaust systems as standard, mainly to cut down on noise, but also to deliberately reduce power levels for economy and reliability reasons. Catalytic converters are very restrictive too. Because of this, it’s not uncommon to gain 5-10 percent extra power from a full exhaust system, decant pipe and induction kit on a modern car. Filter and exhaust combos don’t cost a fortune either, so should be the first performance mods you buy and we have them at a good price. A performance ECU chip is also a simple mod, improving power and drivability for relatively little cash. You will only get small gains on a non-turbo car,
10 Ways To Make Your Car Go Faster but turbocharged cars can sometimes give upwards of 25bhp. 3. GAS IT! Once you have fitted an exhaust and filter, tuning gets more expensive, especially on non-turbo charged engines. One exception to this is nitrous, which can give huge gains for the money you have spent. Nitrous
22 AUTO GUIDE CONNECT . SEPTEMBER—OCTOBER
is an oxygen-rich compressed gas, which, when injected into the engine with the corresponding amount of extra fuel, gives an immediate boost in power. Most standard production cars can happily withstand a 50bhp increase in power via nitrous with no ill-effects, and that’s enough to make any car a load faster. Remember the gas doesn’t last long, so you will need to pay for re-fills. I don't know who does that in ZAMBIA but with good connections it can be done. 4. STRIP IT OUT You have probably noticed the difference in performance of your car when you are on your own in it and when it’s fully loaded, especially in small cars. Well, apart from not giving fat birds lifts, another good plan for more performance is to strip the car out. Things such as seats, interior trim, ICE, sound deadening, the spare wheel and air conditioning systems all weigh a hell of a lot. With them removed you will not only have faster acceleration, but also better braking and handling, too. However, if you want to spend some money you can replace your standard seats with lightweight fibre glass or carbon fibre buckets, glass windows with Perspex, and steel panels with Fibre glass or carbon ones.
5. STROKE IT This is neither cheap nor easy, but increasing the capacity of your engine is always a great way to improve allround power and torque. This is done by totally rebuilding the engine with a new longer stroke crankshaft to increase the swept capacity of the engine. There is a double advantage when this is done to a turbocharged motor, because when you increase the capacity you don’t just get the aforementioned gains in power and torque, but a big-
ger engine means more exhaust gas too. This means your turbo will spin up much sooner, and also enables you to run a much bigger turbo than you could on the smaller engine, but without giving any more lag. The only disadvantage is that some stroker kits can make your safe rev limit slightly lower, but the fact the new stroker crank is often far stronger than standard means the safe rev limit can sometimes actually be higher. Japanese cars have the most widely available stroker kits, but they are
common enough for most other types of engines, and if you are willing to pay for it, many specialist engine component manufacturers will design and build a long-stroke crank and conrod setup for your car. On some cars it’s also possible to use the larger bottom ends from other models to increase the capacity. Examples of this are the Zetec bottom end that RS Turbos often use, 2ltr bottom ends on Mk2 Golf GTis, and RB30 bottom ends on Skylines. Look out for more information in our next issue
DASH / INSTRUMENT WARNING LIGHTS
The check engine light. Every new car now comes with OBDII - On Board Diagnostics 2. This is a fault-registering system connected to sensors all over the car, engine, fuel and emissions system. When the check engine light comes on, it can mean many things. There are something like 4,000 unique OBD2 codes that can be stored. Handheld OBD2 diagnostic tools can be plugged in to the OBD2 port which is normally under the dash on the driver's side. These tools can read out the fault code and/or reset the system to contain no codes. Codes are split into two categories - historical/inactive, and active. The historical codes are lists of things that have been detected in the past but are no longer an issue, whilst the active codes are things that are a problem right now. Codes are subdivided into B-codes (body), C-codes (chassis) and the biggest list of all - P-codes (powertrain). P0440 OBD-II code. This is the most common code you'll find and it's the first thing you should check. P0440 is the code for Evaporative Emission
Control System Malfunction which covers a multitude of sins. The one thing it covers that you can check is your gas cap (petrol cap). Most new cars have a pressurised fuel system and vapour recovery loop. If you've filled up with petrol and not twisted the gas cap until it clicks, you've not sealed the fuel system. Iand the OBD2 system will log a P0440 code. In fact, on a lot of cars, that code is so common they'll actually have some way of telling you to check the gas cap. In the Honda Element, for example, if a P0440 code is logged, the dash scrolls "CHECK GAS CAP" across the odometer display. So if you get a check engine light, check the gas cap first and see if the light goes off. Note : even if the light does go off, the code will likely still be stored in the OBD system and will show up next time it is checked. It wasn't the gas cap. If tightening the gas cap didn't do it, you'll need to find someone with an OBD2 diagnostics tool or reader. Some garages will charge you just for plugging the device in and reading the code. If they do, walk away. They're ripping you off. Better to find a garage or mechanic that will read the code and actually give you a diagnosis rather than just making you pay to find out
23 AUTO GUIDE CONNECT . SEPTEMBER—OCTOBER
a number. Smaller garages and local mechanics will normally do this for you for a small fee, and being independent, the diagnosis won't be predicated on you buying some expensive parts from a corporate chain. If you're a do-it-yourself type used to working from shop manuals, then a lot of places that will give you the diagnostic code for free. In America specifically, the Schuck's chain do free diagnostics checks (Checker, Kragen, Murray's, Advance) as well as AutoZone. Drop in - don't phone up and ask. A lot of times if you phone up they'll tell you it's $40. If you just turn up, more often than not they'll do it for nothing. In the UK I'm not sure who does - if you know, drop me a line. The alternative, if you're into maintaining your own vehicles, is to buy a reader and do it yourself.
The service engine light / Maint Red light. This might indicate "Service", "Service Engine" or "Maint Reqd". It's an indicator that you're getting close to a scheduled maintenance interval.
On some cars it's as simple as counting miles before it comes on, whilst on others it maps engine temperatures, oil temperatures, air temperatures and other indicators of probable stress to tell you when it might be time for new oil or a service. In most cars this can be overridden or reset by you, the owner. Your handbook will tell you if this is the case. If you take your car for a service, the garage should reset it for you. Typically this light will come on when you start your car, and then turn off again as part of the self-check. If it stays on for 10 seconds then turns off, it normally means you're within 500 miles of needing a service. If it flashes for 10 seconds, it normally means you've exceeded a recommended service interval.
The electrical fault light. This warning light is different in every car but normally it looks like a picture of a battery, similar to the picture on the left here. You'll see it come on and go off when you start your engine as part of the car's self-test, but if this light comes on and stays on, it means the electrical charging system is no longer working properly. Think of it like a cellphone battery. If the cellphone is plugged into the charger, you can use it indefinitely, but when you disconnect it from the charger, there's a limited amount of time before your battery runs out. It's exactly the same in your car, only bigger. Every car has an alternator the charger - and a 12v battery used to supply power to the electrical system. If the alternator becomes faulty or the drive belt to it snaps, then it will not be able to do its job. The longer you drive, the more your car will use up the remaining juice in the battery and eventually the engine will die. This almost always requires a new or refurbished alternator.
as "you have no brakes at all."
Brake warning light 1 Most cars nowadays have a brake warning light on the dash. Its purpose is to alert you that something is wrong in the braking system somewhere. If it comes on, check your owner's manual to find out its meaning. The brake warning light doesn't have a standard meaning; it could be used for multiple purposes. For example, the same light may be used to show that the hand brake (parking brake for the Americans amongst you) is on. If that's the case and you're driving, you ought to have noticed the smell of burning brake dust by now. The light can also indicate that the fluid in the master cylinder is low. Each manufacturer has a different use and standard for this light. Which is nice. Because it would be such a drag if the same indicator meant the same thing in every vehicle.
Coolant warning light This is normally the coolant level warning light. If this comes on it means that the level of coolant in your radiator is low and needs topping up. DO NOT OPEN THE RADIATOR CAP WHEN THE ENGINE IS HOT! The coolant system is pressurised and it could easily release pressure and spray you with boiling coolant. Do it when the engine is cold. Top up the system with either a pre-mixed coolant bought from a shop, or with distilled water. Don't use tap water the mineral deposits in it boil out in the cooling system and calcium gets depositted around the inside of the radiator making it less efficient (which will eventually cause it to fail). It's always best to use pre-mixed coolant, or to mix your own rather than using neat water. The coolant mixture behaves as an antifreeze in winter as well as a corrosioninhibitor to stop your engine rusting from the inside out.
Brake warning light 2 If you've got an ABS-equipped car, you also have a second light - the ABS light. If it comes on, get it seen to as soon as possible. It means the ABS computer has diagnosed that something is amiss in the system. It could be something as simple as dirt in one of the sensors, or something as costly as an entire ABS unit replacement. Either way, if that light is on, then you, my friend, have got 1970's brakes. It's important to note that this light normally comes on when you start the car and then switches off a few seconds later. If it blinks, throbs, flashes or in any other way draws your attention to itself, then take note. It's not doing that just to please itself. Compared to a steady light, a blinking ABS light normally indicates something more serious. In some cases it could be as bad
24 AUTO GUIDE CONNECT . SEPTEMBER—OCTOBER
Oil warning light Typically this light will come on if your oil pressure is too low. Low oil pressure is serious and if you continue to drive with this light on, eventually your engine will die. Low oil pressure can be caused by a failed oil pump, a blocked oil filter or strainer in the sump, or by low oil levels - for example if your engine is burning oil. Either way, you need to get it fixed, and fast. Low oil pressure is A Bad Thing and your engine won't thank you for leaving this problem untreated.

From her first ever visit she has witnessed true dedication to helping the sick and dying, through lots of loving care and people being treated with dignity and respect. And, like every family in Zambia, Cossie has been affected by the illness HIV and AIDS. The hospice board was headed up by an amazing man called Dr. Micheal Bush, OBE. Sadly he died in March 2012. Mike Bush was a British Doctor who came out to Zambia on contract. He was one of many who ended up staying. Mike dedicated his life work to helping the sick and dying, and over many years became an expert on the illness of HIV and AIDS. Mike Bush, was the Findlay family Doctor. He asked Cossie to join the board and support the Mother of Mercy Hospice in 2003. Cossie saw that being a Director of Autoworld carried weight in terms of fundraising and getting doors opened. Cossie is now dedicated to continuing the work at the hospice in honour of Mike Bush. The board members support the Sisters in charge with fundraising and policy management.

ROAD SAFETY
PROFILE
REMEMBER THE TEN BASIC RULES OF DRIVING
A reminder to all those who might have forgotten the ten basic rules. Remember they are very important and they will most definitely make driving on the road much easier and stress free. 1) KNOW THE HIGHWAY CODE VERY WELLAND PUT IT INTO PRACTICE: The Highway Code is the road user’s bible and by keeping to the rules you will do much to keep our roads safe and more pleasant for all. 2) CONCENTRATE ALL THE TIME ON YOUR DRIVING TO AVOID ACCIDENTS: Complete concentration will enable you to see and take notice of every detail. It is often the smallest detail that gives the clue to what will probably happen. 3) INTERPRET THE TRAFFIC SITUATION CORRECTLY BEFORE YOU ACT: The idea that a good driver drives automatically is not true. The truth is that by concentrating all the time and thinking, he/she has raised driving to an art. Every driving operation and manoeuvre is a problem which, like every other problem, can be solved by interpreting the traffic situation. 4) EXERCISE PATIENCE AND ‘HANG BACK’ WHEN NECESSARY: To ‘hang back’ is to follow at a safe distance the vehicle ahead which you eventually intend to overtake when the road is clear. When in doubt, ‘hang back’. 5) DRIVE WITH CARE AND GIVE COURTESY TO OTHER ROAD USERS: Good driving continually call for the making of quick and correct decisions, all of which must be carried out with care, especially when overtaking. 6) ADAPT YOUR SPEED ACCORDING TO THE ROAD AND TRAFFIC CONDITIONS AND NEVER EXCEED THE SPEED LIMIT: It is not always safe to drive at the highest speed allowed, even though the law permits you to do so. In some cases such a speed is dangerous. Only unwise persons can drive fast enough to be dangerous. 7) DEVELOP YOUR CAR SENSE AND REDUCE WEAR AND TEAR: Car sense is the ability to get the best out of your car; it entails smooth and thoughtful operation of the controls with hands and feet. This can only be reached if the operations are carried out in good time. Car sense adds to your safety. 8) USE YOUR HORN CONSIDERATELY AND GIVE PROPER SIGNALS: Use the horn to give warning only. Use the signals given in the Highway Code. An incorrect signal is misleading and always dangerous. 9) BE SURE YOUR CAR IS ROADWORTHY AND KNOW ITS LIMITATIONS: Before trying to drive a strange car, get used to its controls, acceleration and braking. 10) PERFECT YOUR ROADCRAFT AND ACKNOWLEDGE COURTESIES SHOWN TO YOU BY OTHER ROAD USERS: The Highway Code urges all to be courteous, but a good driver goes further and acknowledge the courtesies shown to him by every other road user.
