Medicare… It’s that time of year again

John Gardener

A

EP or annual enrollment period is that time of year when you can make changes to your Medicare coverage. From October 15 until Dec 7th you have the opportunity to change from traditional Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan or to switch back to regular Medicare. Many people are still unaware that they have different options and this is the time of year to find out what is available to you and make a change. Changes made during the AEP will be effective on January 1st. Traditional Medicare is what is known as Part A and Part B coverage. Part A covers hospitals and Part B covers Doctors

A Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policy, sold by private companies, can help pay some of the health care costs that Original Medicare doesn't cover, like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. There are several plans available that are typically referred to by a letter of the alphabet A,B,C,D,E,F,G,K, etc. Supplements give you the freedom to go to any doctor that accepts Medicare. There is a monthly cost for these plans that vary from company to company. Medigap policies generally don't cover longterm care, vision or dental care, hearing aids, eyeglasses, or private-duty nursing. These plans no longer provide any prescription drug coverage so you would need to purchase a PDP or Prescription drug plan also known as Part “D” Part D is optional but if you do not take the Prescription drug coverage at age 65 (or have other creditable coverage such as from an employer

sponsored plan) you will have a surcharge of 1% of the average national base plan cost ($34.10 for 2016) for each month you were without coverage. So we have talked about part A and B and D so what happened to C? Well as only the Government can do, Medicare Advantage plans are Part C. That’s not necessarily weird but how it works is. Part C or Medicare Advantage plans are a combination of both parts A and B. and in many cases it also includes part D coverage. Medicare Advantage plans are offered by Insurance companies but are still regulated by the Government. They are required to provide all the same coverage that you get from traditional Medicare but they often include additional benefits and coverages like prescription drug coverage (Part D). There are many different plans and in fact according to the Medicare website there are over 40 available options in Lee County for the 2017 year.

As a general rule HMO’s require a primary care physician (PCP) who manages your care and refers you to any specialist. A PPO may or may not require a primary doctors but it allows you to go to a specialist without a referral from the PCP. Most Medicare Advantage plans now provide coverage for seasonal folks or snowbirds that migrate between 2 or more states to go to providers here and up north and as long as the doctors are in the network there is typically no additional expense. Plans and options vary by company and by specific plans. In order to obtain a Medicare Advantage plan you must be eligible and enrolled for both Part A & Part B So what’s the advantage to a Medicare Advantage plan? Well it depends on you, your prescrip-

. . . On My Mind

G

uess Who’s Coming to Dinner? Why, you are, of course. Since November is Wendy Murray our Art and Entertainment issue, that’s a little play on words. Not only because Thanksgiving is on its way, but that was also one of the best movies of all times that has entertained us for years with the talents of Spencer Tracy, Katherine Hepburn, and Sidney Poitier. These artist actors knew their craft and have starred in some of the best movies to ever hit the screen. What would we do without artistic people who share their talents with the rest of us who, although we may not have their level of talent, we can be appreciative of their gifts. I can’t imagine life without the Arts, can you? Funding has been cut over the years for schools who used to offer the arts as an elective for children who aren’t meant to be politicians, business people, welders, etc. Some people hear music. Some crave the great white way. Some sit at an easel and bring life to canvas. Lucky them. Lucky us. In Fort Myers, Phil and I enjoy plays at the Broadway Palm and many other venues around town that offer top-notch, sophisticated and

talented people that rivals New York City. On weekends you may find us roaming the art galleries Downtown or around the Pine Island and Bokeelia areas. We also enjoy catching a concert at the Barbara B. Mann. Downtown really shines with the Sidney and Berne Davis Art Center. They hit the ground running from day one and haven’t slowed down. How I miss my friend, Berne who brought so much art and culture to our little city. Art Walk is something you don’t want to miss Downtown. Invite your friends to come down on Friday nights and hear the Rockabilly sounds of Memphis 56 in the Patio DeLeon. These guys own it! Speaking of artistic people, did you know that my fiancé, Phil Bondi, is a wonderful musician? He’s my very own Piano Man. Back off ladies, I saw him first.

Love life? Love the Arts! Give Thanks with the people you love this year. I hope you do what our family does… go around the table and have each guest say what they’ve been thankful for this year. My goodness, do we have blessings galore! Tell somebody if they have been a blessing in your life and you are so thankful for them and they have made your load a little lighter. Feel free to drop by for some pumpkin pie!

Happy Thanksgiving to you & yours —

Wendy

Spine-friendly Sleeping Posture Dr. Misty D. Green

Q

: I have been having a difficult time sleeping lately and I frequently wake up sore and achy. Sometimes my neck is sore, but sometimes my lower back bothers me too. I never felt anything like this until a few months ago and it has been getting increasingly worse as time goes on. I do not know whether I need a new mattress or maybe I am sleeping wrong. Do you have any suggestions for me? — Martha C., Cape Coral

A

: What is the best way to sleep? Well ideally if you had a hole cut out for your face you could lay on your stomach pretty comfortably and your spine would be happy. Unfortunately, most people do not have beds like that. So what is the most spine-friendly posture when sleeping? As far as pillows go, the whole goal is to keep your head in a neutral posture, lined up with the rest of your body whether laying on your side or on your back. If the pillow is too thick than it is going to jack your head up, resulting in one side of your neck muscles being stretched and the muscles on the other side being slack, creating an imbalance that you will feel over time. If the pillow is too thin then the reverse will happen, with the muscles being slack on the pillow side and stretched tight on the opposing side, again creating an imbalance… so find a pillow that is just right for YOU, Goldilocks! What is the best position to sleep? If it is comfortable for you, then side sleeping is the most ideal. First, we want to maintain a space between our knees so that they don't knock together and stress out the hip joints. Laying on your side with your knees slightly bent and a pillow between them is the best choice. Personally I use a body pillow and tuck one end between my knees and hug the other end so that my arms have something to do. If you prefer to sleep on your back then just keep the tips in mind that have already

been discussed as far as pillows and neutral head posture are concerned. You just want something to support the curve of your neck and no more. Slip a cushion underneath your knees to keep them slightly bent and it will take pressure off the muscles and joints of your low back. As a way to kick-off the 2016 PRESNOWBIRD SEASON we are offering $10 OFF an hour massage session when getting adjusted the same day during the month of November! 26TH Annual Christmas Carol Sing To Help Community Cooperative Feed The Hungry

elebrate the holidays and help feed the hungry by singing at the 26th Annual Christmas Carol Sing sponsored by the Galloway Family of Dealerships. The Christmas Carol Sing will be Tuesday, Dec. 6, at First Presbyterian Church, 2438 Second Street in downtown Fort Myers, between Lee Street and Royal Palm Avenue. Admission is free, although organizers request voluntary donations of at least two cans of non-perishable food for The Soup Kitchen, operated by Community Cooperative, and a voluntary cash donation, if you can. Because of the overwhelming popularity of the event, three sing-alongs are planned at 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. The doors will open 30 minutes prior to show time. Community Cooperative provided food and other services to 10,250 people last year with the help of partner agencies, including the Harry Chapin Food Bank and United Way agencies. Community Cooperative was founded in 1984 to help alleviate hunger and suffering in Lee County. The church has been a strong supporter of the agency from the beginning and continues to support its ministry there by providing volunteers and other support for The Soup Kitchen and the Meals on Wheels program. Hymn Sing organizer Sam Galloway, Jr., has made feeding the hungry part of his life’s work. “Our community has done so much to help our neighbors, but we need to do even more. If we each just gave the equivalent of what we would spend on a meal – either at home or in a restaurant – those few dollars could feed a family of four for an entire week.” Galloway said. Galloway said cash donations are especially needed because Community Cooperative can buy five times as much food for the same amount of money that residents spend at local grocery stores. Residents who cannot attend any of the Christmas Carol

All three events benefit The Soup Kitchen of Community Cooperative, which was found by First Presbyterian Church, along with other local churches, in 1984. Services are offered Sundays at 11 a.m. with Sunday Adult Education from 9:45 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. A nursery is available from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Hearing assistive equipment also is available.

C’mon! Let’s Go Do Something! Pumpkin Recycling Last fall, we tried an experiment with our kids. When we carved our pumpkin, we left some seeds inside. After we displayed it, we added some potting soil (a couple of inches will do). Then we placed it in the garden and watched it grow! Our kids learned a lot about how plants grow. This year, they can't wait to do it all again! — Tamara

The Cost of Bread I love good fresh bread, but I hate how much it costs. It seems like it's twice as much as it was just a few years ago. And if you like anything fancy, it's really outrageous! Therefore, I learned to make my own. It's not nearly as much work as you might think, and it costs much less than the store loaves. I don't even have a bread machine. I find that kneading is good exercise! — Connie

Special Outings For a family of six (three boys and one girl), going out can be expensive. Even a museum can be expensive. My husband and I came up with something we call "special outings." We decide on an outing that's free or nearly free. It could be a nature walk, a skate park, or a picnic near a lake. During the days before, we give the kids hints but won't tell them what the special outing is going to be. This builds excitement. We always try to have something special with the outing. For the skate park, we had a simple trick that they were to try to master. We videoed the attempts to play back when we got home. It didn't cost anything, but this made it all the more fun. — Cindy

Save the Harvest Most gardeners end up with too much produce, and it's a real waste to throw it away. Therefore, I freeze mine! There's a good chance the produce can be frozen without any special preparation. Peas, tomatoes, peppers, and other veggies can go straight from being washed into the freezer. A few like corn and carrots require blanching (which isn't hard) before being frozen. Now I'll have free veggies for months! — David

Smoked Meats We have a small backyard, so I don't have room for a smoker. I learned to use my kettle grill to cook smoked meats. I made a divider that cuts the bottom of my grill in half. This allows me to put charcoal on one side of the grill, which concentrates the heat on that side. I can add wood chips to that side and create as much smoke as I want. Since many smoked meats are best if they cook low and slow, I put them on the other side of the grill, so the heat is indirect. With the cover on the grill, I can control the temperature and amount of smoke. I probably won't win any BBQ cook-offs, but my family sure is happy! — Dave

Handy Cam I love the fact that my phone takes pictures. I find that they're a great way to remember little things that I might forget. When I went to pick up my sister last weekend at the airport, I was afraid that I would forget which floor and location I parked my car, so I took a quick picture. If I need a part for a home repair, I take a picture of the old

part and maybe the model number in case that's important. I've even taken pictures of bugs that were eating my garden. After showing it to an expert gardener, he was able to tell me exactly how to get rid of them. I'm always looking for more ways to make my life easier! — Jon

Family Costumes Here's an easy and inexpensive family costume idea. Make each person into a Christmas present! Find boxes big enough to cover from shoulders to waist. Cut a hole for your head and cover with wrapping paper. Add a ribbon and you're all set! If you want, you could add those little elf hats or anything else that's holiday related. If you don't want to use that much wrapping paper, consider aluminum foil or paint the boxes different colors. Stencil them if you want. This idea didn't cost much and the costumes were comfortable to wear. We got a lot of compliments! — Beth

Dinner for One I live alone and have friends over for dinner every week. I never want to run out of food, so I cook a little extra. I portion anything that's left over into meal-sized servings that I freeze. Usually I end up with two or three meals that I can take from the freezer and warm in the microwave to have an instant dinner. It's much better than eating alone in the restaurant or bringing in junk food. — Olivia

Easy Lawn Edging We have a large yard and needed a lot of edging between the grass, shrubs, and flower beds. I went to our home center and purchased a 'broken bundle' of roofing shingles. I cut them to the desired shape and set them flat on the ground. No grass or weeds will grow through them. They stay in place and are super easy to maintain. I can run my lawn mower over them without a problem. I chose a dark color that blends in with the dirt. It's a cheap and easy solution! — Donnie

Simple Money Habits I'm chiming in to say this article has great advice, as I found out the hard way. Years ago, I let mail pile up, thinking it was all junk, only to find that my former university had recommended me for a $15,000 scholarship to a drama school in New York City. All I had to do was sign and return a form by a certain date. Yes, I had missed the date by not opening the letter. I went to the school anyway, but I had to pay all the costs myself. I have opened every envelope every day of my life since! My friend throws unopened junk mail into the communal recycling bin by her mailbox, and it makes me cringe to see her do it. I have begged her to please just open the envelopes to make sure! Keeping a box to throw receipts into every day is the simplest way I know to find what I need at tax filing time. I just go to the box once a year, extract anything that can be claimed on my tax returns, and shred the rest It saves so much time. Another friend had $200 saved in a big plastic jar. He used it for a family treat. I tend to roll mine up and take them to the credit union when it gets to more than a few dollars. All the tips in the article are easy habits and could save a lot of money (like $15,000 for example). — Ann in NYC

Investing in Art OR Vive les arts

Lucy Costa

M

y husband (Jack) and I have always taken an interest in art, however our passion was ignited as a close friend introduced us to the Salmagundi Club, one of the oldest art organizations in America. Under his friend’s guidance, Jack pursued his passion by learning about the artists, painting mediums and joining the club. At first I was somewhat skeptical of his view of art as an ‘investment,’ however with increasing involvement in several auctions, I have become a convert and share his belief that a balanced portfolio includes investments in art and culture. For those of us fortunate to have income to travel, see

live performances, enjoy wining and dining at quality restaurants, investing in fine art is a perfect compliment. Compared to receiving a lifeless statement that may contain positive numbers, investing in art can stir your soul, peak your senses offers a more rewarding and visible reminder of your accomplishments. After hearing many stories about the club and enjoying the benefits of striking paintings on our walls, I was able to see it firsthand on a recent trip to New York. Founded in 1871, the Salmagundi Club is located in a magnificently restored brownstone mansion in Greenwich Village. Home to the American Water Color Society, this iconic treasure features three galleries walled with art for upcoming auctions and paintings from the Master Collection on display.

The architecturally rich parlor on the second floor features an ornate marble fireplace, period furniture, art and décor. Down the creaky wooden staircase is a cozy dining area with full-service kitchen, lounge and another gallery. Everything combined to provide a feast for all senses. While there are many more well known auction houses and galleries, the Salmagundi offers an intimate, almost “boutique” atmosphere with an inside view of the artwork

created by talented artists who donate pieces to be sold at auction to raise money for the organization. The auctions are win-win for the approximately 850 members and smart public who often get art worth considerably more than the buying price while raising funds to maintain the structure. If you’re fortunate enough to attend the auction in person, your experience is enhanced when you get to meet the artists, auctioneers, donors

and board over good food and drink. In southwest Florida, Arts for ACT annual auction offers a similar opportunity to support local artists and an important charity. Buying art at auction prices is a great way to give personalized gifts that commemorate special occasions, recognize contributions. When properly appraised and insured, your collection will be valuable to your heirs or can be sold as your tastes and-or financial situation changes. Art that inspires, evokes memories, elicits feelings, are investments of the heart, but also can be a financially sound decision. When purchased carefully, most collections will build in value while you enjoy their beauty in your home or office.
