C O N T E N T S Expanded course description: LA 203L is the culmination of the lower division, investigation studios, of the landscape architecture curriculum at Cal Poly Pomona. This studio challenges participants to combine all of the prior experiences and knowledge within the investigation of a single site. This studio has high expectations of individual curiosity and motivation while challenging students to work collaboratively and effectively in small teams. Additionally, this studio includes a heavy digital component for production, communication and fabrication. Software versatility and fluency is critical to the contemporary practice of landscape architecture and success in the upper division. This studio explores a design process that builds in complexity by layering information from a specific urban site along a specific alignment. The project aims to peel back the layers of local context to reveal the salient process at work that has the potential to shift a site. This studio strategy aims to be simultaneously local in action and global in example while challenging studio participants to inclusively consider landscape. New possibilities will be modeled, ecologies will be proposed and territories will be formed through resilient adaptation and the creative act.

“We assert the primacy of material and formal specificity over myth and interpretation. Students will investigate, map and analyze the critical systems, associations and alignments of the studio project location and its context. In teams of two, students will map their assigned transect of the Silver Lake Reservoir. SILVER LINKAGES + EXQUISITE STRUCTURES

To generalize, a field condition could be any formal or spatial matrix capable of unifying diverse elements while respecting the identity of each. Field configurations are loosely bound aggregates characterized by porosity and local interconnectivity. Overall shape and extent are highly fluid and less important the internal relationships of parts, which determine the behavior of the field. Field conditions are bottom-up phenomena, defined not by overarching geometrical schemas but by intricate local connections. Interval, repetition, and seriality are key concepts. In this third project, students will explore the fundamental site condition of the edge the threshold between water and land; the condition where unlike bodies meets with maximum interaction. This ubiquitous site condition will be interrogated through the testing of typical fixed/structural program typologies adjusted by typical performative actions/operations as controlled by the specific lessons/rules/relationships of the site as revealed in the mapping project.

Patterns have this capacity to weave together systems and signs, thereby functioning in both utilitarian and figurative ways. They offer a framework that can be layered with ‘information’, absorbing the functional mandates placed on landscapes, such as increased attention to water capture and absorption, without forsaking formal and perceptual coherency. [8] Patterns, whether naturally occurring or designed, are indicators of the processes that created them, but they also convey future processes, which makes them particularly relevant as a strategy for dealing with degraded sites. 1/16” Cardboards Study Models

Karen M’Closkey, pp. 19, Synthetic Patterns: Fabricating Landscapes in the age of ‘green’ Site conditioned/determined... Here the sculptural response draws all of its cues (reasons for being) from its surroundings. This requires the process to begin with an intimate, hands-on reading of the site. This means sitting, watching, and walking through the site, the surrounding areas (where you will enter from and exit to), the city at large or the countryside. Here there are numerous things to consider; what is the site’s relation to applied and implied schemes of organization and systems of order, relation, architecture, uses, distances, sense of scale?

This fourth and final phase and final of the project will require students to individually choreograph a set of assigned and derived programmatic pieces and performance criteria into the overall conditions of portion/bank of the transect they own- they must assemble their own monster. This phase will include notions of broader planting/capturing or opportunistic strategies and patterning in response to assigned program performance. This phase will utilize programs that are simultaneously cultural and ecological, formal and informal, understood and misunderstood, indexed and poised.

Topographic+Fixed Program Drawing @ 1/16” scale The lengths of walls are 6.12,24,48 feet long; height varies depending on the elevation. When wind or prevailing wind comes, water is slightly moving. At the time, water hits the surface of the wall, it creates splashing of sounds. If the water moves strongly, it might overflow to second wall. The flow of water may stop at the first wall or at the last wall depending on how water can flow far.

Square pattern shows human circulation and density of activities during the day and night. Also,the dashed circle line shows birds activities. Based on site observation in silver lake, birds are nesting under neat of the tower. From circulation drawing, there is denser around the tower, as they move to other place, the pattern of birds start dispersing. The other dense area in my site is around the walls and near the tree.
