Preparing Your Home for Winter As the Autumn leaves fall, so too do the temperatures! Now is the perfect time to make sure your home is winter-ready. By taking a few precautionary steps, you can minimize maintenance and repair costs as well as reduce your heating bills. Here are five tips to help you prepare your home for winter: 1. Furnace Inspection * Call an HVAC professional to inspect your furnace and clean ducts. * Stock-up on furnace filters and change them monthly. * If your home is heated by a hot-water radiator, bleed the valves

2. Get the Fireplace Ready * Cap or screen the top of the chimney to keep out rodents and birds. * If the chimney hasn't been cleaned for a while, call a chimney sweep * Inspect the fireplace damper for proper opening and closing.

3. Check the Exterior, Doors and Windows * Inspect exterior for crevice cracks and exposed entry points around pipes. * Use weather-stripping around doors and caulk windows.

4. Inspect Roof, Gutters & Downspouts * Add extra insulation to the attic * Check flashing to ensure water cannot enter the home. * Replace worn roof shingles or tiles. * Clean out the gutters and downspouts

5. Prevent Plumbing Freezes * Insulate exposed plumbing pipes. * Drain air conditioner pipes and, if your AC has a water shut-off valve, turn it off.

Need a referral for a professional? I can put you in touch with local service providers to help you obtain the variety of services associated with buying, selling or owning a home.
