September 2009 How does one keep from “growing old inside”? Surely only in community. The only way to make friends with time is to stay friends with people. Taking community seriously not only gives us the companionship we need, it also relieves us of the notion that we are indispensible. - Robert Mcafee Brown

Upcoming Events in the Park September reminds us of the slight let-down of summer’s close felt as a child…back to school, shortening days, and the end of care-free galavanting. But don’t forget the beginning of fall brings beautiful weather, fantastic events, crab season, and the Ravens’ return! Gear up for fall and football season while making the most of pre-equinox light and postsummer weather.
Masquerade Benefit Many of you have had the pleasure of either watching or participating in The Great Halloween Lantern Parade in years past. This annual event, sponsored and run by the Creative Alliance, brings hundreds onlookers together to celebrate the artistic side of Halloween. With myriad homemade lanterns and performers, it is a true spectacle and a fantastic evening. Like so many other local non-profits, the Creative Alliance has recently lost much of the funding it has always depended upon to host the Lantern Parade. It is with pleasure that I have volunteered to host a benefit the evening before the parade on October 23rd. A night of masquerade, good company and refreshments will help keep this neighborhood tradition alive.
Please mark your calendars!

People Are Talking: Signs of Change, Quotes for Optimism By Kimi Aghevli, with assorted quotes as attributed Whether the news is good or bad, people love talking real estate. It’s not wonder, given that a home is most American’s largest asset and source of wealth. The past couple of years have seen a lot of ups (inventory, anxiety) and downs (prices, interest rates, happiness), but recent trends and statistics give us all reason to opt for optimism. Let’s see what people are saying…
“Reported sales of existing homes jumped 7.2 percent in July, the biggest monthly increase since it began keeping track in 1999. Sales rose to an annual pace of 5.24 million. It was the fourth consecutive monthly increase in existing home sales, the longest streak since June 2004. Sales were 5 percent higher than a year ago, the first time sales were above year ago levels since November 2005.” -
National Association of Realtors, as reported in the Baltimore Business Journal, August 21st 2009, “Existing Home Sales Jump to Two Year High”
"The housing market has decisively turned for the better. A combination of first-time buyers taking advantage of the housing stimulus tax credit and greatly improved affordability conditions are contributing the higher sales." -
NAR Chief Economist Lawrence Yun
“30-year fixed-rate mortgages fell to an average of 5.12 percent this week. A year ago, longterm mortgages were 6.5 percent.” -
As reported by Freddie Mac
“The number of homes sold in July throughout Greater Baltimore rose 10 percent to 2,240, up from 2,038 during the same month last year.” - Rockville market research firm Metropolitan Regional Information Systems Inc.
"Hypothetically, the Baltimore market could be close to equilibrium, if not at equilibrium, by this time next year." -
Kenneth Wenhold, director of the Mid-Atlantic region for Metrostudy, a housing-market research firm
