July 2009 In our hectic, fast-paced, consumer-driven society, it's common to feel overwhelmed, isolated and alone. Many are re-discovering the healing and empowering role that community can bring to our lives. The sense of belonging we feel when we make the time to take an active role in our communities can give us a deeper sense of meaning and purpose. - Robert Alan

Upcoming Events in the Park Start off the month by celebrating our country’s independence, and stay in the celebratory mood all month long! Our nation, our city, and our neighborhood are perfect examples of how different backgrounds, lifestyles, and ideas combine to make something so much greater than the sum of its parts. But with so many things going on, you’ll be sure to find a few that fit just who you are. Stay cool, Patterson Park!

Patterson Park Patter Check out my new blog, the Patterson Park Patter, and keep up to date on all the latest events, parties, fundraisers, debates and news. I started the blog to highlight all the great things we have going on around here, and add a bit of a personal twist as well (see photos of how I transformed my back patio from onerous to oasis). Recent topics include updates on the food co-op plans, fundraisers and benefits in our neighborhood, alley gating, local CSAs, what I LOVE about living here, and what’s hard, too. I also have links to other Patterson Parkers’ blogs, and some great home design sites and renovation projects. Of course, if you know me you know it wouldn’t be complete without a little bit of cooking and baking in the mix, too! So have a look, and let me know what you think! http://PattersonParkPatter.blogspot.com

The 2009 Maryland Legislative session recently wrapped up, with some notable victories for consumers and REALTORS alike. I have selected a few of the bills that passed that I think may be of importance or interest to those in our neighborhood. Have a look, and let me know if you have questions, or if you’d like to hear about other notable bills. SB 87: Property Tax – Homestead Tax Credit Modifies the application process for the HTC, extending the filing deadline to September 1 for any settlements that ocurr between January and July. If a homeowner fails to apply for the credi by December 31st, 2012, the homeowner will still have one year to reapply for the credit and it will be instated as if the credit was never lost Effective June 1 2009

SB 227/HB 144: Baltimore City Newly Constructed Dwelling Tax Credit Extends the authority of Baltimore City new dwelling tax credit, which was set to expire this summer. The credit is a multi-year credit applied to a new constructed property located in the city. The bills also provide an amnesty period for owners of newly constructed buildings built after 2005 but who never previously applied for the credit. Effective June 1 2009

SB 538: Homestead Tax Credit – Improvements Increases the value of home improvements that will trigger a reassessment of the property to $100,000 from $50,000. Typically, a home is only reassessed every three years, but may be reassessed sooner if a home improvement is completed. This will reduce the number of reassessments resulting form home improvement.
