The Patterson Park Spring Home Tour
Saturday, May 2nd, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Ever wondered how your neighbors have decorated, renovated, or laid out their row homes? Have friends that aren’t familiar with how great our community is, or may be thinking of moving? Well, mark your calendars and spread the word about the Spring Home Tour! Scheduled to coincide with the American Visionary Arts Museum’s Kinetic Sculpture Race’s trek through the Park, the Tour will feature ten homes of various size, style, and location around our neighborhood. This is a great time to satisfy your curiosity while showing outsiders how community-minded we all are. To volunteer, email me! For more information, or to share this event with others, please visit:
Spring has sprung! Buds and bulbs will be popping up all over the park, drawing us all out from our living rooms and in to Baltimore’s Best Back Yard… the Park! Take advantage of the longer days, nicer weather, and April 1st (Wednesday) Join this week’s Citizens on Patrol Walk – we will be accompanied by Mayor Sheila Dixon, so come on out and make your voice heard! April 4th (Saturday) Head to the park at 10 a.m. for the DBFA’s annual Easter Egg Hunt, complete with Easter Bunny, arts and crafts, food, and lots more. Take some time to appreciate how lucky we are to have such a great community and beautiful park. April 13th (Monday) It’s time again for the PPNA Monthly Meeting and there’s lots to talk about and plan. Grab your neighbors and head to the intersection of Linwood Ave and Baltimore St around 10:30 a.m. to borrow tool then hit your alleys, sidewalks, and tree pits. Creating Curb Appeal for Rowhome Living By Kimi Aghevli
The average resident of Patterson Park has between twelve and fourteen feet of front footage outside their house – not a lot of room for a glorious garden to impress passers-by, that’s for sure. But in this challenging real estate climate, curb appeal is more important than ever for our whole neighborhood. With homes so close together, a seller’s best efforts to impress potential buyers can be damaged by a neighbor’s unkempt exterior. Additionally, a clean, green, and stylish exterior throughout our neighborhood shows the world we love our homes and respect our neighbors. What better message to entice new residents and visitors, and repel potential wrongdoers? Get your home’s exterior looking it’s best without breaking the bank with these easy outdoor improvements. Pots and Planters – Buy some planters at Home Depot, IKEA, or another home furnishings store and fill them with bright seasonal flowers. Varying heights and colors add some eye-catching interest to planters and pots. Make sure you remember to water your flowers regularly, and provide adequate drainage so as not to waterlog them. Shine a Little Light – If you don’t have a exterior light by your front door, consider having an electrician install one that goes with your home’s look. Ranging in price from $20 to closer to $100, there are myriad sizes, styles, colors and finishes available. Adding light to your front not only makes a block more inviting, but also improves its nighttime safety. Hanging Gardens – For less than $10 you can buy a plant hook from Home Depot – again, many styles available, ranging from very ornate to totally simple – complete with masonry screws. Hang seasonal flower baskets throughout the Spring, Summer, and Fall to add a splash of color to your front. Numbers That Count – While not the first thing of which you might think when sprucing up your exterior, your house number can also add a little class to your home’s front. Whether you go with a modern metal number in relief or a painted tile inlaid to your brick, your house number is yet another accent that is easy and cheap to improve. Tasteful Transoms – If you’re ready to splurge, consider getting a custom strain-glass transom above your door. Drive around the neighborhood and pick a design you like and snap a photo. The great folks at Lombard Hardware can help you adapt it to your space and pick out colors. Not only will your house like fantastic from the outside, but you’ll also get beautiful light trickling through to your interior. Tree Pits That Aren’t The Pits - Keep your tree pits weeded, mulched and free of trash and debris. Mulching in April should quell the growth of weeds so get on out there! For the more green of thumb, tulips, daffodils and other flowers can add even more streetscape charm. Clean Sweep – Just a few minutes is all it takes to sweep leaves and dirt into the street on street cleaning days, or a trash bag if your block does not have this service. Stupefying Stoops - Make Bodine proud and break out the Bon Ami, pumice, and water and get scrubbing! 3
