It is widely understood that restaurants are among the most difficult businesses to succeed. Along with a popular menu, essentials to suc-

cess include visibility, consistent highway access and easy parking. Tom Coehlo purchased the IHOP Restaurant at 2450 Wardlow Road, adjacent to the 91 freeway and the Serfas Club ramps just as the expansion project was beginning. Despite the challenging conditions, Tom’s IHOP customers have continued to find their way

through the restaurant’s doors to enjoy the food and excellent service. Tom and his wife Natalie, who handles H.R. duties, have five grown children, all of whom attended CNUSD high schools. One son, Paxton, works at the IHOP. The Coehlos also operate another IHOP in La Verne. ... Continued on page 8

100+ Women Who Care

Cinco de Mayo Celebration Parade Grand Marshall Named Don Williamson

O

n Saturday, May 7, one of Corona’s oldest celebrations will return with the Annual Cinco de Mayo Parade and Fiesta. Each year volunteers from the Cinco de Mayo Scholarship Committee organize the holiday revelry to raise money for scholarships to be awarded to students graduating from all high schools within the Corona-Norco Unified School District.

L

ois Tomlinson of Riverside shared with Karen Spiegel of Corona the success of other chapters of 100 Women Who Care. Lois and Karen partnered to form the Riverside-Corona Chapter of 100 (or more) Women Who Care with the first planning meeting February 28, 2016. The founding members are Virginia Blumenthal, Yolanda Carrillo, Beth Groves, Kim Hicken, Linda Holmes, Taryn Ontiveros, Joyce Pavez, Rachel Rola, Jodean Salley, Kym Talbert. They represent a group of local diverse women who are interested in supporting our local community in the greater Riverside and Corona area. In 2006, a dynamic and community minded woman in Jackson, MI, Karen Dunigan, formed an alliance of women with the intent to streamline fundraising help for local agencies. Since inception, the original group of 117 women has grown to 245 women and has distributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to organizations or agencies in the Jackson area. The concept has been so effective, other communities have formed similar groups. There are currently over 350 groups meeting or under development around the world. Membership to the Riverside-Corona Chapter is open to ALL women. We are seeking 100 or more women to commit to our group. Commitment involves attending four, one hour meetings a year, pledging $100 per meeting ($400 per year). At each meeting, an opportunity is provided for three members of the group to present a five (5) minute explanation of a local (no national) organization or agency in need. There is an opportunity for questions. A vote is taken. The winner is announced. Each of the 100 women (or more) writes a check to the winning organization or agency. The meeting ends. The organization or agency walks away with at least $10,000! This is powerful! This is world changing! Together, 100 or more

women in our community, can significantly impact the many local organizations and agencies devote to improving lives. We meet the first Monday of May, August, November, and February, 7:00 to 8:00 pm ~ rotating between Riverside and Corona. Our first meeting will be May 2 at the Circle City Center, 365 N Main Street, Corona, CA 92880. Please bring your friends and help us launch this project in the Riverside-Corona area. The more women we gather, the greater our impact within our community! To register for the May 2nd meeting, log on to www.CORONAchamber.org – contact Lois Tomlinson at 951-809-3673 or Karen Spiegel at 951-833-8136

The Grand Marshal for the 2016 Cinco de Mayo Parade is Dr. Jose Alamillo, author of the Corona history book, “Making Lemons Out of Lemonade: Mexican American Labor and Leisure in a California Town 1880-1960 ”. Dr. Alamillo is a professor at California State University Channel Islands The Parade will begin at 10:00 a.m.

SATURDAY, MAY 7TH

at the corner of Sixth and Merrill Streets. The participants will head east on Sixth Street to the Corona City Park, where the Fiesta will commence. Any group interested in appearing in the Parade should call; David Brambila (714) 502-4316. The Fiesta at the City Park will feature music, food, children’s fun zone and the announcement of the Cinco de Mayo Queen. Businesses or non-profit organizations wishing to have a booth at the City Park can call Robert Brambila (951) 314-94050. The Fiesta concludes at 4:30. Applications for scholarships, entering the Queen contest, participating in the Parade or Fiesta along with additional information can be found at coronacincodemayo.net. The first Cinco de Mayo celebration in Corona was publicized in the May 4, 1923 edition of the “Corona Courier” newspaper. The article read, “The Spanish speaking people of Corona cordially invite the business concerns, lodges and civic organizations to join in the big parade May 5.” A local businessman, Leo Montoya was the chairperson of the festivities, also held at the City Park that year and he was available by telephone, his number, 34. Bring the entire family to the historic Corona City Park on May 7 and be part of the fun.

Vulcan has solicited vendors and family members to join in, asking for people to walk or financially give to the American Cancer Society. For the prior two years, The Vulcan Crush Cancer team have donated $45 - $50,000. “Another aspect of being part of the ‘Relay’ is our team building,” stated Wilkerson. “We work in our job areas during the day, but to be able to work together for a cause, get to know someone outside of work, enables us to learn more about a person, and this transforms to a better working relationship at the workplace! We encourage other businesses to either join our team, or form a team of their own.” For more information about starting a team, fundraising opportunities, or about the event please contact either Sophia Betancourt at betsofia@yahoo.com or Jenni Nickels at jenni.ebbesen@cancer.org.

The Memorial Mile March will conclude on the lawn at the CORONA City Hall. A brief tribute honoring the fallen heroes and the planting of the flags in a patriotic symbol will conclude the event. Sponsorship opportunities are available to businesses or individuals. Interested parties should contact the CORONA Chamber Foundation (951) 737-3350 The Memorial Mile March concept is the inspiration of U.S. Army Veteran, Mike Ehredt, who selected Corona as the location for the first Memorial Mile March in the country.

In 2010, Mike ran 4424 miles from the Atlantic coast in Maine across the United States to the Pacific coast in Oregon. Each mile he ran, he left a small flag with the name, rank, age and hometown of each soldier that lost their life during the war in Iraq. He called his tribute to these men and women, Project America Run. Two years later, on August 25, 2012, Mike took off, this time from the U.S. / Canadian border in Minnesota on Project America Run II. Once again running alone, on this journey, he placed flags with the same personal details, honoring the lives lost in the Afghanistan war, ending his sojourn at the Gulf of Mexico in Texas. Our long range goal is to have a Memorial Mile March in multiple cities and states in the coming years.

CORONA CHAMBER 8 CORONA Business News

Local businesses honored by CORONA Chamber cont’d Since Tom purchased the IHOP on Wardlow in 2014 and despite the evolving freeway construction schedule, business has increased as have the number of employees by 50%. One of the first challenges facing the location was being certain the IHOP sign would be high enough to be seen over the freeway work. Tom sought the assistance of the Corona Chamber of Commerce who helped ensure the issue was quickly resolved. With the progress of the 91-expansion project so critical to his business, Tom was appointed to the 91 Project Corona Community Task Force, which provides a forum for citizens to discuss construction activities. “I want to be part of the process.” Tom said, “This gives me a chance to add any pertinent information I may have that can help.” Tom and Natalie enjoy living in Corona and are generous in their support of the community. When the Special Olympic delegations of Iran and Slovakia trained in Corona, IHOP, hosted the teams for breakfast before they left to their competitions. The CORONA Chamber is pleased to recognize Tom and his team at IHOP by naming them the recipient of the Award of Excellence in Retail.

JIM BROWN / KELLER WILLIAMS TO RECEIVE AWARD OF EXCELLENCE

Real Estate in any community often sets the tone or financial worth for the area. CORONA is fortunate to have so many individuals who make their living in the Real Estate profession. Not often, and very rare does a community have one person who has taken his wealth, knowledge and expertise and shared it with others – such is the case with Jim Brown, broker and local Keller Williams operation. Jim believes in the real estate industry. His impact to our region is perhaps a well-kept secret, mostly because Jim is not one to be out front saying ‘look what I have done’, moreover he is behind the scenes, using his abilities and resources to enable and teach others ‘how to’ in

April 2016

this ever changing field. Jim invested millions to provide his associates, over 200, to occupy the majority of the 5th floor at the Dos Lagos’ professional office building. Ensuring proper training, mentoring and education are in place, Jim and his team will select successful realtors to help mentor those new realtors, or associated in the real estate industry. Jim began my career in Real Estate in 1983 with Land Development. He started working sales in New Home tracts and eventually began specializing in residential resale. He continues to work in land development, particularly large lots being subdivided for new housing tracts as well as specializing in listing homes throughout Corona, Riverside & Orange County. Having two Buyer Specialists to assist finding buyers the perfect homes as well as a full time licensed Transaction Coordinator ensures Jim’s clients to have their transactions run as smoothly as possible. “Jim Brown is a true leader and has created the #1 Real Estate Brokerage in all of Corona & Norco. He’s an inspiration to those around him. I’m glad to be a part of his organization. Congrats Jim!” Kym Talbert, Realtor Keller Williams Realty Keller Williams is located at 4160 Temescal Canyon Road, Suite 500,

JOE DOMINGUEZ AMERICAN LEGION POST #742

This year completes the first 70 years that the Joe Dominguez American Legion Post #742 has been an important contributor to the veterans and citizens of Corona. Following the Allied victory in World War II, Corona’s veterans returned to their hometown. Along with millions of former service members across the United States, they went to their local American Legion Post to apply for membership. Corona’s Hispanic veterans were “encouraged” by the existing Legion Post to form their own Post. The future local leaders, then young men and women, including the late Frances Martinez, Reynaldo Aparicio and the first Hispanic Corona Councilmember, Onias “Ace” Acevedo, did just that. They selected to honor one of our local heroes that paid the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our freedoms as their namesake. Attending Corona schools, Joe Dominguez was an outstanding athlete and scholar. In December 1943, he was killed in action during the invasion of New Britain Island in the War’s Pacific Theater. The contributions to Corona by Legion Post #742 and their members over the past 70 years have been a staple of Corona across business, education, athletic, cultural and social arenas. Currently Legion Post #742 supports a local ROTC unit, sends high school students to Boy’s State, provides scholarships, cares for local and regional veterans, provides honor guards as requested and opens their Post Hall at 1557 Yorba Street for a multitude of community events, just to name a few. Segregation is a despicable fact of our history. In Corona, one of the most positive result of this regrettable past is the establishment of the Joe Dominguez American Legion Post #742. This Post, led by Corona

native, Commander Edward Romero, represents the best in American values including service and patriotism. It gives the CORONA Chamber great pleasure to honor them by presenting them with the Outstanding Non-Profit award.

THE CHAIRMAN’S AWARD IS BEING PRESENTED FOR PHILANTHROPIC OUTREACH – PAYING IT FORWARD

“I learned of Marty Burbank and his philanthropic outreach, and I thought to myself, this guy truly gets it! As Chairman for the CORONA Chamber, I want to acknowledge individuals who go above and beyond, those that think outside the box as well, pay it forward,” explains Mark Peabody. “Uniquely enough, OC Elder is new to our community, but what is so cool, is their outreach to helping others.” Marty Burbank wants to live in a world where children are healthy and safe and seniors live without fear or pain, and Veterans are respected and taken care of. During his 12 year Navy career as a Medical Deep Sea Diver he served at Seal Delivery Vehicle Team One, Naval Special Warfare Group One, and served as the Senior Enlisted Petty Officer in the Critical Care Department at Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego. While serving in Hawaii, he completed his Bachelor’s Degree from the State University of New York. After the Navy, he completed his Juris Doctor degree

nother great event in CORONA happens every Saturday, on the property of Saleen Motors, where the weekend’s normally empty parking lot fills up with various cars – from muscle to antique, to car clubs lining rows – it is an experience that enables families a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the automobile, clean weather and all for free in CORONA! What started as a few car guys wanting to offer a weekly hang out location has blossomed into a huge turnout of everything from classic American Muscle to Italian supercars and even rare oddities like a right-hand-drive Mini Cooper truck. “Since we started the event in September, it has really become a staple in the community,” remarked Maxwell Matthewson, Director of PR and Marketing for Saleen. “We used the Irvine Cars & Coffee as the example for ours and that really helped us get off the ground.” However, unlike the Irvine Cars & Coffee, which was shut down by the City of Irvine, Cars & Coffee Corona has the full backing of the City of Corona. “We really think this is a great event for both the city and the residents,” explained Corona Councilmember Randy Fox, “there is such a huge automotive culture here in Corona and we felt that we needed something like this to give back to the community.” First time visitor: “Had a great time at Cars and Coffee this morning over at SALEEN Motorsports with my friend Dominique Froesch. I took a ton of pictures” stated Jordan Windeknecht who furnished us with tons of photos. Jordan is 18, owner of My Communiteen Inc. What would Cars & Coffee be without the coffee? The CORONA Chamber Foundation volunteers weekly to provide the coffee and pastries for the event. “When Councilmember Fox first approached me with the idea of a weekly event, I thought of our Foundation. It was immediately embraced by our volunteer board. Don Williamson (Foundation VP) donates his Saturday mornings by brewing coffee and greeting the numerous guests with pastries and good conversation

– often leading into CORONA’s rich automotive history,” said Bobby Spiegel, President and CEO of the CORONA Chamber, “the Foundation is our Charitable non-profit that enjoys this outreach in our community.” With plenty of room for growth, Cars & Coffee Corona is slated to become Southern California’s premiere weekly automotive event. It is held every Saturday from 7-9 AM at Saleen Automotive, 2735 Wardlow Rd. For any questions about the event, send an email to carscoffeecorona@gmail.com.
