he CORONA Chamber of Commerce 2016 Board of Directors recently conducted an annual planning session where they reviewed the Chamber’s successes and shortcomings in 2015. Through a SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats), charted a course to guide the 105-year organization in making the upcoming year successful. The CORONA Chamber is setting its course for a tremendous growth year – not just in membership, though that is a top priority, but in other areas as well. At the forefront, the Chamber will be very active in cutting through governmental red tape and helping our elected officials to set business-friendly policies and legislation through their strong Legislative Action Committee (LAC). “About 10 years ago, the

2016 CORONA Chamber Initiatives CORONA Chamber started the Legislative Outreach and Advocacy program,” states Mark Peabody, Chairman of the Board, “it was built upon a need to help our businesses. A slogan that is often cited in politics is “If you are not at the table, you are probably on the menu”. We certainly don’t want our member businesses to be on the menu, so we are going to be active in advocating for and protecting the interests of Corona businesses locally as well as at the State and Federal levels of government. While we are proud of this area, we realize there are other items that need to be accomplished and fine-tuned as well.” THE CHAMBER WILL FOCUS ON FOUR MAIN INITIATIVES IN 2016: Membership / Retention: Our goal is to bring the organization to over 1,000 member firms.

Mark Peabody, 2016 Chairman of the Board Events / Programs / Seminars and Fundraisers: To add value to every member firm through excellent programming. Marketing: To get The Chamber’s message out and communicate the great work we are doing to the community-at-large. Economic Development: We want to drive Corona’s economy to have sustainable growth for the next generation. ... Continued on page 6

Each school has two (2) teams consisting of a dozen students will be competing. Up to 21 other Teams from all over southern California school districts outside of CNUSD will converge in Corona for this competition. WHAT EXACTLY IS GOING TO HAPPEN? Students will arrive and have their robots inspected to make sure they follow the specifications allowed for competition. The game that students will participate in is called Nothing But Net. In this game, robots must shoot grapefruit-sized foam balls into a high or low goal. After this, they will attempt to lift other robots off the floor. The more successful in shooting goals and lifting robots, the more points a team will earn. After several rounds of competing, a

FST SAND & GRAVEL AN’S CHAIRAMRD AW

Mark Peabody, Chairman of the Board for the CORONA Chamber of Commerce, states “FST Sand & Gravel really showed true commitment to our community. Over the years they have supported numerous organizations and agencies, and without expecting anything in return. This past year, they offered Peppermint Ridge, a home for individuals with disabilities, a challenge which resulted in FST to match $100,000 of new monies raised by the 55 year old organization. We are grateful for Frank Smith and his team for setting the bar in philanthropic out-

reach.” Smith’s companies do many of these ‘projects’ but often anonymously. “This is even more cause to acknowledge and recognize Frank Smith and his team at FST Sand and Gravel.” Founded in 1950, Frank Smith Trucking & Equipment is a mid-sized trucking company in Corona, California. It has 30 full time employees and generates an estimated $2.2 million in annual revenue. For decades, Frank Smith has operated FST Sand and Gravel (21780 Temescal Canyon Rd, Corona, CA 92883). Frank and his team keep to themselves and con-

tribute mostly anonymously without any big fanfare or acknowledgement. Throughout the years, FST have selected numerous non-profit agencies to benefit from their generosity – initially with donated product and labor, and over the past few years, the outreach from FST has increased more and more.

Keynote Speaker: Jeffrey Barnes Matching the theme of “Dream and Achieve”, The Wisdom of Walt which has taken storm throughout Southern California, will captivate the minds of those attending. Jeffrey Barnes is a professor at California Baptist University. Why did Walt Disney build Disneyland? Because he wanted one! Can success really be that simple? It can be when you know what you want and you are willing to do what it takes to get there. Disneyland began as one man’s dream on a park bench one Saturday afternoon. Today, it is a symbol of success and an example of entrepreneurial leadership around the world. In Jeff

Barnes’ The Wisdom of Walt, discover how Walt Disney took action to transform his dreams into the concrete reality we still benefit from sixty years later. Disneyland’s story is one every student of success (business owner, CEO, VP or achiever) should know. Barnes will share “instead of being a place of escape, Disneyland will become for you a model of success – learn how the Park can challenge you to live your dream, inspire you to take action, and teach you how to create your own magic so that every day for you is as fun as a day at Disneyland. MARK PEABODY cont’d Membership / Retention: With a goal to bring the organization to over 1,000 member firms, the focus will be enhancing the membership status for businesses. Formulating a process to improve customer relations through more contact and visible outreach, the chamber aims to broaden their impact of creating a strong local economy. Our plans include hiring a consummate professional to represent the Chamber through relationship-building with our existing member firms as well as new prospective members. The goal is to identify the needs of our existing members and insure that our Chamber is exceeding the value of their annual membership dues through service, advocacy and programming that helps their businesses in a tangible way. Events / Programs / Seminars and Fundraisers: This team will evaluate the various impacts each Chamber event has on the business community. Providing Networking Opportunities as well as making a difference for the Chamber’s members are the key elements to consider. What economic impact is accomplished by hosting these various programs or events? How can they impact our businesses and community in a positive way by fulfilling unmet needs and setting Corona apart as a premier location for businesses to call their home? Marketing: From updating our web site to maximize the new realities of cyberspace significance to a clear and

consistent message of our successes, the Marketing Initiative team will engage our membership base and insure that we not only provide products and services important to them, but also keep them abreast of things the Chamber is doing to protect their interests and offer educational opportunities to help them run their companies better. The primary goal of the Marketing Committee is to understand our base, respond to their needs, both known and unknown, and provide a clear message back to them so they can see how their membership dues are paying off in spades. Economic Development: The world has changed in the last 20 years and it continues to change at an alarming rate. Detroit did not see the world changing around them and now it lies in ruins as many thriving businesses declined and disappeared. Today, the most valuable retailer (Alibaba) has no inventory, the largest taxi company (Uber) owns no vehicles and the largest accommodation provider (Airbnb) owns no real estate. If we as a chamber do not recognize the trends that are shaping our future and communicate those trends to our membership base, we will all go the way of Detroit. In addition, we believe that Corona can be the Jewel of The Inland Empire with a re-vitalized downtown, convention venues and upscale restaurants, retail and entertainment, all of which will attract businesses to locate here in the future. Our Economic Devel-

With an active Board of 22 members, the Chamber embraces the challenges we face ahead and is striving for excellence in every area outlined above. In 2016, it won’t be “business as usual” at The Corona Chamber; together the all-volunteer board of directors under the leadership of Chairman Mark Pea-

body and CEO Bobby Spiegel will strive to reach new heights and set the bar of excellence for other chambers of commerce to emulate. The Chamber’s underlying goal for 2016 is to provide value to its member base that far outweighs the investment they make in membership dues. Together, we as business leaders can do far more than any one of us can do alone. Not a member yet? Now would be a great time to join the fray and be a part of the amazing opportunities we have ahead. For more information, visit The Chamber’s website at www.mychamber.org.
