n 1976, the United States celebrated its 200th anniversary. In the same year, Joan Barnes, a mother living not far from San Francisco was looking for a safe, fun place that would offer age appropriate activities for young children. Her search was unsuccessful so she did what entrepreneurs do and started her own business. Victor graduated from John F. Kennedy Middle College High
School with a high school diploma, and a week later graduated from Norco College with four Associate’s degrees in Social and Behavioral Sciences, Communications, Media and Languages, Administration and Information Systems, and Humanities, Philosophy and Arts. students in Key Club there to become engaged philanthropists in their own local communities. Victor will attend the University of California, Riverside this Fall, entering as a junior with dual majors in Business Administration and Public Policy.

CAI Receives Presidential Award for the Second Time THE 2016 “E” STAR AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN EXPORTING FOLLOWS THE “E” AWARD RECEIVED IN 2011
C
orona based Combustion Associates Inc. (CAI), a provider of engineering and manufacturing solutions to the Energy, Process and Environmental industries worldwide, received the President’s “E” Star Award at a special ceremony on May 16, 2016 at the U.S. Department of Commerce in Washington D.C. The President’s “E” Award is the highest recognition a U.S. entity can receive for making a significant contribution to the expansion of U.S. exports. CAI President Ms. Kusum Kavia accepted the award from U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker at the 54th Annual “E” Awards ceremony in the presence of elected state and federal officials, representatives of various government agencies and other dignitaries. “These companies demonstrate the opportunity inherent in selling Made-in-America products to the broad customer base that exists outside our borders. Their success contributes to growth, job creation, competitiveness, and the success of the
American economy,” said Secretary Pritzker in a press release. CAI scored an encore with the “E” Star Award because the Company has previously received the E-Award in 2011 for sustained increase in export sales over a four-year period. The “E” Star award recognizes previous “E” awardees who have reported four years of additional export growth. “We are honored and humbled that the Department of Commerce has once again recognized our consistent export efforts. The support and guidance of the U.S. Commercial Service has been very critical to our success in overseas markets,” said CAI President Kusum Kavia. “Our Company has experienced firsthand that exports can be a source of growth and job creation,” added CAI Chairman and CEO Mukund Kavia. This year’s 123 honorees — the largest group to ever receive the “E” awards — helped the United States export $2.23 trillion worth of goods and services in 2015, and supported an estimated 11.5 million export-relat-
ed American jobs. CAI has demonstrated consistent growth in exporting its innovative, in-house developed modular power plants, auxiliary systems and services to emerging markets around the world and, as a result, created jobs in California as well as in the countries where its projects are located. The
Company’s exports now account for more than 70 percent of its total sales. The “E” Star is the second award CAI has received this month. On May 3, it was presented with a 2016 Export Achievement Award by the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce during World Trade Week.

ooks 4 Billy (Cuzins Against Cancer) was founded by Kevin Mahoney in 2014 to raise money to assist families of brain cancer victims. Kevin founded the local 501(c)(3) corporation in honor of his cousin, Bill Torrey, who is a Major in the United States Army, a husband, a father, and a brain cancer victim himself. I’ve recently bought a few of Kevin’s books for my grandson with the knowledge that 20% of the revenue from his books is donated to the cause. I’m pleased to call Kevin my friend. We’ve coached baseball together and he interacts with children with the same intent as he writes his books…to teach life lessons. Kevin continuously establishes himself as a leader in each venture he enters. I have been struck by his perseverance, integrity, and honesty that are the same qualities of the characters in his books.
Kevin has published 11 books in all with three more due out later this year. The book that started this entire venture is called The Biggest Birdie. Kevin wrote this book when his son, Jacob Mahoney, a 2012 Santiago High School grad, went off to college. Among the three books due out this year is one called My Cuzin Billy, which tells the story of a young boy coming to grips with his cousin’s battle with brain cancer. Kevin works from home as an independent financial advisor with Independent Capital Management in Corona, California where he lives with his family. He is also the public address announcer for the Santiago Sharks boys’ varsity basketball program. The characters in several of Kevin’s children’s books are named after his children and inspired by life events. I encourage everyone to buy and read these books. They are written about life events that each of us has or will go through.

destrians as well. The new homes in Arantine Hills will bring appreciation to home values for the entire area, including existing homes in Eagle Glen and elsewhere. Additionally, the City will receive increased tax revenues for improvements to public roads, parks, schools, public safety, libraries, etc. The project will give Corona an increase in local employment for construction (roads, bridges, new homes & infrastructure) purchase of raw materials from local companies and increased revenues for other new and established businesses (like restaurants and retail establishments) in Corona. This will result in as many as 11,000 fewer road trips per day on our local streets and highways and spur our local economy. Much like the 91 freeway expansion, the new bridge construction will be a short term inconvenience, especially to residents of the Eagle Glen communities, but in the end it will be a huge benefit to all of the citizens of Corona in both home values and quality of life.
Woman’s Improvement Donates to Local Charities 5TH ANNUAL SALUTE TO THE MILITARY DANCE
T
he Woman’s Improvement Club of Corona (WICC) was honored to present donations to several local military groups on May 24th. The donations were the result of their 5th Annual Salute to the Military Dance earlier that month. The “Big Band Era” themed event, included a live band playing jazz and swing music, professional swing dancers, and a Bob Hope impersonator. While 50% of the proceeds was earmarked for their Scholarship Program, which has supported education since its founding in 1899, the other 50% was donated to several military groups. The recipients included Blue Star Mothers, Bob Hope USO, Corona Veterans Center, and the Norco
College Veterans Club. In addition to the military donations, the WICC has supported education in the community for over 117 years. With an annual distribution of approximately $22,000 per year, donations are awarded to high school senior and adult education graduates seeking a higher level of learning or trade. Also included are projects and programs including but not limited to conservation, domestic violence, health and welfare, armed forces and supporting other community non-profit organizations. The Arantine Hills community housing project (by The New Home Company) has stepped in to provide the funding for the City of Corona to start the bridge construction and cover 100% of the costs to complete this much-needed project today; not 20 years from now. Bridge construction will commence before any of their new homes are issued building permits and are allowed to start construction. Because the builders will only build homes at a rate that meets the demand by new home buyers, expectations are for a complete buildout will most likely take several years. Corona needs a new bridge, and New Home Company is a very well capitalized, publicly traded award winning company. Because the cost of bridge construction will be borne by them, it will not create any financial burden to the citizens of Corona. The construction of this bridge will include a wider and more safe and accommodating area for vehicles, bicycles and pe-

n May 28, the 2nd Annual Memorial Mile March, found participants strolling around Grand Boulevard carrying flags with cards attached baring the names of local heroes that gave their lives serving our country. Some participants also carried flags with the names of veterans that they selected to honor. Flags were mounted at the March’s conclusion on the South Lawn of the Civic Center and became part of a display that spelled out “USA”. Members of the Corona Fire Department were on hand to display a giant American flag high in the sky hanging from their fire truck’s extended hook and ladder. The flag bearer leading the March was Commander Edward Romero of the Joe Dominguez American Legion Post #742. Flags of each branch of the
service followed carried by veterans of those branches. Commander Romero, along with Corona Councilmember Karen Spiegel and Norco Mayor, Kevin Bash, addressed the crowd. Each speaker expressed the importance of remembering the service and sacrifice of our military personnel. From its days as a rural agricultural center, the citizens of Corona have proven their devotion to this country in endless ways. The Memorial Mile March is just one example. It was especially satisfying to see families with children, some in strollers, in attendance, passing on the traditions of patriotism. The end result brings our celebrations to Saturday, July 2. While some people are excluded, by this decision, since Saturday is a regular workday for them, the city should be applauded for taking all aspects into consideration. Since that important vote, the following items have been confirmed: Monster Energy has in the past provided a huge stage and sound system, this was not possible if the event was July 4; overtime fees for city staff are reduced tremendously, as set up for the Fireworks and Festival takes two full days (now, it will be Thursday and Friday for Saturday’s event. If on July 4, set up would have been Saturday and Sunday). Regardless where you stand on this decision, it is our hope that this year’s celebration (July 2 in CORONA) will be done with style, effectiveness and patriotism. Veterans Hosted by Corona’s Business Community By Don Williamson
T
he Corona Chamber of Commerce and their sponsors hosted over 200 veterans and active duty military personnel at their Quarterly Luncheon on May 20th. The City of Corona provided the venue, the new Circle City Center, for the large crowd to enjoy an event that honors the military during “Military Month”. The keynote speaker, Brigadier General Russell A. Muncy, commander, 452nd Air Mobility Wing, Air Force Reserve Command, March Air Reserve Base, was the keynote speaker. General Muncy reminded attendees of the sacrifices made by members of our military. He read portions of letters from a soldier that she sent home during the War in Afghanistan. She detailed her challenges, hopes and devotion to her tasks. The young American hero was ultimately killed in action. The Santiago High School AFJROTC performed the “Missing Man Honors Ceremony” which sets an empty table with symbolic reminders of the
MIA/POW’s whose return we wait for in anticipation and mourning. Awards of Excellence were presented to Keller-Williams Realty, IHOP, and Marty Burbank, OC Elder Law. The non-profit of the year award was presented to the Joe Dominguez, American Legion Post #742 and accepted by Post Commander, Edward Romero. The Dominguez Post is celebrating its 70th anniversary of serving local veterans and the community. Each year the Corona Chamber of Commerce sponsors this Salute to the Military. Total quarterly value of permits issued in Q1 16 is up over $26.8 million since our lowest point in Q4 12.
1ST quarter trend Percentage of PERMITS CORONA experienced a significant increase in Q1 16, rising a little under 40% in one quarter. This increase shows the strong upward trend in the market due to large new development approvals in CORONA. The total value of building permits issued in in Q1 16 was $31,710,194 after seasonal adjustment. Both residential and commercial sectors increased in overall value this quarter. The industrial building permits value decreased by 12%. Although Q1 16 is still well below the economic high in Q1 08, it is 18.4% above the average for all the quarters since the start of the index, in Q1 08. We can expect to see above average values and an overall trend back to our pre-recession levels of Q1 08 for CORONA.

Corona’s Restaurant Week July 11-17
The CORONA Chamber Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is sponsoring its inaugural Restaurant Week July 11 – 17, 2016 event. We have tagged the event “Restaurant Week 24/7,” in recognition to have a maximum of 24 restaurants participating over a 7 day period. By limiting the number of restaurants that can participate, we are allowing each participant to standout amongst a relatively small number of Corona’s finest restaurants! To participate in this exclusive event, each restaurant has donated $300 per location, and
will offer specials during the week. All proceeds from this event will be used by the Foundation to support its Statement of Purpose, which includes promoting and supporting educational activities within the community, as well as supporting the community’s active duty military and veterans and individuals and families faced with economic hardship associated with a wide array of emergency expenses. Corona’s citizens have demonstrated time and time again what it means to “give back” and have supported past

events that have materially impacted veterans, students and families in need. Please support these restaurants by patronizing their establishments during this week.
