The CORONA Chamber: The “Go To” Place for Our Business Community

arch Madness is just around the corner, and yet it seems as if we are all still celebrating New Years’… Oh yes, we still are rejoicing that 2020 has passed. I am reminded regularly that life is very short, and we need to take advantage of the opportunities in front of us and remember the cliché that “opportunity only knocks once.” I want to begin, as I did with my Board at our first monthly meeting: I am so honored to be able to head this organization. When tough decisions coupled with life-threatening issues came our way, our professional staff and membership rose to the occasion. In the 2020 year-end review, I shared with our volunteer Board of Directors the financial situation of the Chamber. While many

chambers and businesses closed their doors, the CORONA Chamber went into full action, outreaching to our membership base and checking in with them, becoming the central focal point for information, including connections from governmental agencies to healthcare professionals, workforce development and beyond. The Chamber had a tremendous positive impact on our landscape and worked diligently to minimize the effects on businesses that were in dire needs of resources, information, and assistance. Our membership came through; we achieved amazing results because of your support. With gratitude, I can announce that financially the Chamber ended 2020 ahead of the preCOVID budget by 240%!

Our outreach will become a “third place” for many; like a coffee house, we are in the “human connection” business! During 2020, the CORONA Chamber became the “go to” place for so many businesses; in 2021 and beyond, we will continue to offer this “go to” opportunity for our members. Our professional staff will continue to be helpful and friendly. Our aim is to be a continuation of your business. I welcome each of you to get to know our team members, and we all look forward to meeting your team as well! Sometimes it can feel like no one cares and it’s just a job. They are often holding

the hands of people that are scared. But these workers also need to know it’s going to be ok and that we’ll get through this together.” Mary expressed her gratitude to those who helped make her dream a reality: “To all the donors and volunteers who have stepped up and wanted to help, I’m really grateful.” If you are interested in donating, visit the CORONA Chamber Foundation at www.GiveBigCorona.com.

Our successes were great, but I can hear my beloved mother’s voice, “Don’t get hung up on reading your press clippings.” My takeaway from her advice is simple—what we accomplished yesterday, or in prior times, is history, and now we need to focus on today, tomorrow and the future. Investing in the organization and our team is a critical dynamic that our Chamber Board embraces. This February, our Western Association of Chamber Executives held its annual conference, yes, virtual for the first time ever! The opening day, the speaker was Ryan Estis, with the topic “Adapt & Thrive”. He was amazing, and the following are tidbits I captured from his talk: “Embrace continuous reinvention, future makers. e recognize that this past month has been a bumpy road with the vaccine roll which faced several challenges. There has been an overwhelming desire to receive a vaccine, yet we have not had nearly enough supply. The vaccine shortage is not only in our County, but across the State and Nation. It is easy to point fingers and blame others, but the reality is we must focus on what we can immediately fix and continue the efforts of getting vaccines into the arms of those who want it. As many of you know and shared with us, we had serious challenges early on with the vaccine appointment registration system. When you accessed the County website it took you into the State-run appointment portal. The state registration portal either crashed or the appointments filled up quickly (10,000 appointments filled in less than two hours). Riverside County has been working with our IT and County Public Health leaders to develop and leverage an independent registration system from the State. Thanks to the County Team’s hard work and dedication, we have administered vaccines to our front-line health care workers in Phase 1A (Tiers 1, 2, and 3) in addition to beginning Phase 1B (Tier 1). We pivoted our approach recently and started prioritizing the oldest and most vulnerable population, beginning with those 85 and older. Since then, we have adjusted the age thresholds downward by five-year increments. Currently, the age criteria is 65+ years of age and we have added dedicated appointments for the 2nd dose. We have also added more staff to field calls through our 2-1-1 system. I’m pleased to share that we are surpassing all our surrounding counties in the administration of vaccines. Over 80% of doses received by Riverside County have been administered to county residents, which is higher than the State average of around 50 percent. As of February 10th, Riverside County has received 268,450 COVID-19 vaccine doses and 257,073 have been administered at county-operated clinics and a variety of community healthcare partners. This represents a sharp improvement from a few weeks ago when the county’s vaccination rate was only 46.8%, which was due largely to a delay in reporting from our medical partners. For more vaccine information from Riverside County, please visit https://www. rivcoph.org/COVID-19-Vaccine As you may have learned, Governor Newsom announced that Blue Shield in partnership with Kaiser Permanente will be taking over California’s vaccine distribution efforts

as the outside administrator tasked with ramping up the state’s coronavirus vaccine delivery system. Kaiser Permanente will help in the effort to deliver vaccines speedily and equitably across the state of nearly 40 million residents. Both are nonprofit companies based in Oakland. After several weeks of closures, restaurants, gyms, museums, and other businesses can resume outdoor operations immediately under state guidance. The State’s Regional Stayat-Home Order was lifted on January 25th and counties across the state returned to the state’s “Blueprint For a Safer Economy” colored tier System. Riverside County is currently in the State’s Purple Tier, along with 53 of the 58 counties in California (99.9% of the population). This means that businesses like restaurants and gyms can operate outside, while personal care businesses such as hair salons, barber shops and nail salons can operate inside with modifications. To see what is open in Riverside County and to read industry guidelines, please visit covid19.ca.gov/safer-economy.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO GETTING PEOPLE BACK TO WORK, OPENING OUR BUSINESSES, RETURNING CHILDREN TO SCHOOL AND WORKING SAFELY, TOGETHER TO ACCOMPLISH THESE GOALS. At the February 9, 2021 Board of Supervisors meeting, the Board approved the contract for our new county Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Jeffrey Van Wagenen, who will manage and lead the county through our $6 Billion+ budget, manage 44 departments (20,000+ employees), address all the upcoming state mandates while managing the vaccination rollout and changing economic landscape. The selection of the new County CEO was made after an extensive nationwide search with over 100 applicants. I’m confident you will have the opportunity to meet Mr. Van Wagenen at one of the upcoming Chamber Business Briefing events. He will serve the county well! I encourage you to stay connected by joining District 2 on Facebook @ SupervisorKarenSpiegel or Twitter @SupKarenSpiegel and Instagram @ SupervisorKarenSpiegel.

Riverside County Supervisor Karen Spiegel administered the oath of office to the Board of Directors and 2021 Board Chair Kim Mabon. 2019 Board Chair Mike Ryan presented a thank you gift to 2020 Board Chair Don Williamson. One of Williamson’s favorite pastimes is baseball, so he was bequeathed a bat etched with his name, portrait, and theme for his year as Chair, “Make History.” The event closed with Mabon’s vision for the year, reprinted on page 12. Vision cont’d from page 1 professional to have clients writing checks to a business rather than my own name. Therefore, Creative By Design was born. Ten years ago during the Great Recession, I was a remote worker for an association back in Virginia. I served as their VP of Creative Services, designing their monthly magazine and collateral materials for their trade shows. In the evenings, I would work on projects for my own freelance company. One morning in early January 2011, I received a phone call from the CEO. Once she announced that HR was on the call with her, I knew what was coming next. They informed me that with all the budget cuts they needed to make, they had decided to outsource my department. Eleven people lost their jobs that day, and it was not an uncommon experience for the time frame. I knew what I needed to do right away. I was too experienced to be hired by most firms facing budget cuts. I was also done putting tireless hours of hard work into my job for someone else to reap the benefits. It was time to take my business full-time. At the time, I was the only breadwinner for my family. My business was growing but was only 1/4 of the income I had been earning. I had to operate using huge amounts of faith

in March of 2020, every one of us was forced to stop in our tracks. With the majority of things shut down, this caused a lot of us to re-evaluate our lives and ask ourselves, ‘What is really important?’ It caused many to shift their priorities. Everything changed. When businesses slowly started to operate again, everything was different, not only facing the requirements imposed to keep everyone safe, but how our customers connected with us was altered. Author Joseph Chilton Pearce said, “To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong.” Now is the time to set fear aside. Things are changing so rapidly, that we can’t be in fear of trying something new. Get creative, research new ideas, generate new revenue streams, and engage with your customers on another level. You’ve heard the term ‘think outside the box’. I believe that term has become antiquated. Now it should be ‘smash the box’! We need change how we approach things altogether— construct new plans, build new ideas, and change our approach so that we can be successful in the coming year. There are some businesses whose business model is entirely different than it was prior to COVID. For others, it is heavily modified. Then there are the ones that are struggling to keep the doors open. Now is the time to work together and share

ideas and resources where we can. Find ways to partner with each other for the greater good. For us to move forward, we need vision. “Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world.”

DR. RICHARD LACHMAN

YOLANDA FRENCH TOWN & COUNTRY MEDICAL CORP. CARRILLO DAY SCHOOL

Joel A. Barker, an American futurist, spoke this in his video titled “The Power of Vision”. Develop a plan, write it down, make it plain! Write a new business plan or strategy that focuses on what you CAN do this year, instead of what you can’t. Female Astronaut Kalpana Chawla

said, “The path from dreams to success does exist. May you have the vision to find it, the courage to get on to it, and the perseverance to follow it.” So, I challenge each of you to put away how you’ve always done things, so we can discover the new creative visions. Let the adventure begin!
