On August 25, 2017, Officer Gutierrez attended a neighborhood watch meeting, during which the tenants of the apartment complex complained of crimes occurring within their complex. That same night, Office Gutierrez located a suspicious male who ran when he tried to speak with him. Firefighter Paramedic Dan Khalili is being awarded for this year’s Community Service Award. Dan’s compassion and leadership has touched two young lives in the last year. He began his journey in the Big Brother program in 2009, and has grown very close to Carlos Samoya, whom he still mentors today. Over the last year, he used his physical strength to raise almost $7,500 for a local boy by the name Tayvin Sheridan. Dan started a “ G o Fu n d M e ” page and ran an Iron Man in his honor. The money he raised assisted Tayvin and his family to pay for ear reconstruction surgery. Dan is an excellent paramedic, showing compassion to every patient he treats. His caring attitude and willingness to help others is an inspiration for all of us and the community we serve.
Sr. Det. Voorhees was the lead detective for the Sharmon Intili homicide that occurred on November 23, 2016. Voorhees led the investigation by gathering and evaluating all the evidence; then presented his findings to the District Attorney’s Office for prosecution. Voorhees has drawn upon his knowledge and experience as a seasoned homicide investigator and his investigative expertise to put together a case for the District Attorney’s Office that was predominantly supported by circumstantial evidence. Voorhees and the entire Detective Bureau continued their relentless investigation which culminated in the arrest of Mark Brierley on June 15, 2017. Voorhees’ leadership traits of being a TEAM PLAYER and an EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATOR have been evident during this process. The DA’s Office has complemented Sr. Det. Voorhees and Corona PD on several occasions for the thoroughness and diligence in investigating the Sharmon Intili homicide. Sr. Det. Voorhees is commended for his leadership.

Captain Sean Harmon and Firefighter Dan Fagan are being awarded Distinguished Service for their bravery and lifesaving actions. On Wednesday, August 10, 2016, Dan Fagan and Sean Harmon were off duty and driving westbound on the 105 freeway toward El Segundo. They came across a solo vehicle rollover. The driver was trapped. The adult male had a major head injury and fracture to his right arm. There was a severe arterial bleed from his injured arm. Gasoline was leaking from the overturned vehicle, and without any extrication tools, there was no way Dan and Sean could free the critically injured driver. Risking personal injury, Dan applied direct pressure to the wound from the passenger window. Sean climbed in the back seat of the wreckage, removed his belt, and used it as a tourniquet to control the bleeding. Several minutes later, LA City Fire arrived and extricated the patient with the Jaws of Life. Due to the courage and decisive actions of Fagan and Harmon, the injured driver was likely to survive.

Journey cont’d Directors, insights and involvement have been a tremendous asset for all of the business community. Don’s vision, input and knowledge has provided strength and wisdom for this membership driven organization nearing 1,000 businesses. Chapter TWO Don’s focus during 2017 included communicating and nurturing businesses. His personal commitment to our team started with weekly “Walk-Abouts” with the Chairman and President. Though early in his Chairmanship, health issues prevented Don from continuing this weekly activity, many of the Board, Volunteers and Staff did similar activities which resulted in higher percentage of retention figures than budgeted. Including a successful Membership Drive that provided growth and opportunity for those businesses who joined our organization. Chapter THREE - During Don’s Journey, the Corona Chamber engaged and produced a new program of action, eliminated duplicated efforts or programs that were outdated. In June, the Corona Chamber hosted the Southern CA Economic Summit where speakers touched in multiple areas of growth, optimism and expansion. It was during this ½ day session where Ontario International
Airport CEO Mark Thorpe shared their vision of expansion; Riverside County CEO George Johnson embraced the audience with facts and figures on growth down the I-15; Hospital CEO Mark Uffer shared passionately about Healthcare and what to look for; Norco College President Dr. Bryan Reece enthusiastically engaged the audience what to expect in the near future – specific to veteran assistance, growth and programming. Corona City Manager, Darrell Talbert provided a recap and quick education process on Economic Development 1.0 to 3.0. Part of the Economic Summit showcased our 2nd class of 40 Under 40, the Best and the Brightest in our region. Chapter FOUR – The Riverside County Women’s Leadership Conference was brought back to Corona. Redesigned and reformatted to a ½ day event, this conference hosted near 900 attendees, doubling last year’s event. Four dynamic speakers shared passionately with consistent messaging of UPLIFTing tips and stories. Chapter FIVE – Our Legislative / Advocacy Outreach hit high marks, with annual trips to Sacramento and Washington DC – these ‘Summits’ are organized by Chamber management and engages business leaders who volunteer their Time, Talent and Treasures – each investing to travel at their
own expense while helping the Corona Chamber with our efforts in Sustaining a Strong Local Economy, Promoting Business Friendly Legislation and Fighting against job killer bills. Chapter SIX – Partnering in our community to help other non-profit organizations thrive and excel is another successful mark that occurred during Don’s term. The Corona Chamber hosts monthly meetings for all non-profits, as well has been an integral part in many local success stories and programming for these agencies. Chapter SEVEN – Introduction of CORONA 2020 – a comprehensive display of accountability and private / public partnership has been launched. Focused on three main areas – Employment | Health Care | Infrastructure; the Corona Chamber’s 2020 strategy will analyze opportunities for Corona to improve. Bring leaders together to share their expertise and Create measurable progress towards goals. With this being launched now, there is a separate article in this publication that goes into details. September 2017 saw a community come together. With a huge fire in our foothills, homes and lives were spared by the grace of God. What our Chamber witnessed was business after business outreaching to help; neighbors helping each other; and we are so proud of the city personnel. The professionalism of our Police and Fire, they did an outstanding job. There is another group of professionals that the Chamber recognizes as well – this comprises
Sally and Don Garling
the dedicated city employees in all departments. Realizing the first responders were busy in firefighting or evacuations, all departments in the city worked together to prevent mass chaos within our city. All city services continued and many of them were worked on by members of different departments. We have a great city and an excellent team of employees. In early October, the Board of Directors chose to honor all employees with a luncheon at the City…a small way to show our appreciation for all they do. As Don begins to turn over the reins to John Weyhgandt at the Chamber’s Annual Installation and Awards Gala, there are still numerous programs that could be in future Chapters include: Active Duty Personnel, Veterans Outreach and Honoring Police & Fire. To summarize, our grateful love and respect to Don and Sally Garling for providing us their talent, time and treasures during this Journey of a Lifetime…

Corona STEM Academy VEX Robotics Tournament
O
n Saturday, February 10, 2018, the Corona STEM Academy is hosting its third VEX robotics tournament. Since its inaugural tournament in 2016, the Corona Chamber has been involved. Last year’s event was hugely successfully, seeing 36 teams from all over southern California came to compete in the Starstruck competition. Local participation included three teams from Auburndale Intermediate and a team from Corona High. One of the Auburndale teams and the Corona High team got selected to participate in the finals and
qualifying rounds, students will then be ranked and select alliances for the finals. The alliances will then compete in elimination rounds until one alliance is designated the winner. Students who win in the competition and some of the other judges awards will qualify for state and world championships. One of the big differences between this year and last year is that there currently have 48 teams entered. With a much bigger group of students competing, more teams get to qualify for state and world champi-

40 Under 40 cont’d and many of our two year honorees will be invited to serve on our selection committee. Self-nominations are permitted, as well, nominations from others are welcomed. The 40 Under 40 will be highlighted in the 2018 The Guide, a comprehensive review of our community of Corona, sprinkled with feature articles and complete membership directory of the Corona Chamber. A unique and personalized section dedicated solely
to those 40 entrepreneurs who are under the age of 40. In addition to the printed material, the group will be introduced and honored at the April 27, 2018 Good Morning Corona event. We are excited to change over this venue to incorporate this ceremony. A panel from the 2018 honorees will be formed for a group discussion and answering questions. If you have questions, please connect with Stephanie Shapiro at the Corona Chamber by calling 951.737.3350 or Stephanie@MyChamber.org
YOUR AD HERE CONTACT THE CHAMBER TODAY TO REACH MORE THAN 5,000 POTENTIAL CLIENTS. CALL 951-737-3350. Auburndale’s team was in a finals alliance that placed 16th. This was the first time any of the STEM Academy teams have advanced to finals and we are really looking forward to this upcoming tournament. This year, the competition is called In the Zone. Robot teams will compete to pick cones up off the floor and stack them on to short mobile goals or taller stationary goals. Students then must try to move the mobile goals into scoring zones and park robots into special spots before time runs out. The robots have a fifteen second autonomous period where the robots are pre-programmed to pick up cones and stack them. This is followed by a 1:45 period that students drive the robots and score. After several
onships. The other major difference is that we need a much bigger group of volunteers to assist in making this a major Southern California event. Should this event run well, we are looking at possibly hosting regional or state finals in the near future. So, here is our call for volunteers: We are looking for about 15 people to help set up the night before, February 9, and then 30 more people to help during the competition itself on Saturday, February 10. There is a need for referees, judges, and logistical help, field setters / runners and food coordination. Please contact Pete D’Agostino, STEM Coordinator for the Corona STEM Academy, at 951.736. 3231 X3545 or pdagostino@ cnusd.k12.ca.us for more information or to offer assistance.

Conversely, entrepreneurs and their young companies are now the source of all net new jobs, but they have also created churn, and have forced us to change our expectations for how, where, and for how long we work. As Mark Twain once said, “People are all for progress; it’s change they don’t like.” The session will help explain the process, enabling attendees to better understand these changes – both those that have happened, and that which is ahead. Our goal in hosting this program is to develop strategies to foster entrepreneurship, encourage innovation, and re-engage our area workforce. She gets this. Mo represents the economic development field, community leadership, higher education, and entrepreneurship. This course will easily be inclusive for the twentysomethings and boomers alike; collectively, Mo brings the wisdom of the old economy with the creative intellect of the new. Ken Kammeyer, Joyce Pavez and Jerry Puga to receive Chamber’s Lifetime Achievement Awards By: Don Williamson
Rising Star
KEN KAMMEYER
Ken has accom p l i s h e d a great deal since first arriving in Corona, seventy years ago. In 1965 he opened Kammeyer & Associates (K&A), a firm of landscape architects that provides quality and unique landscape services. Ken earned a degree in Ornamental Horticulture from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. He has also earned an M.A. from UCLA. One of K&A’s first projects was developing a “master plan” for a project known as Vail Ranch, that became the city of Rancho California. When then President Richard Nixon, needed a landscape architect for his Western White House, Casa Pacifica, in San Clemente, he commissioned Ken. Ken is a past president of the Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Board. Then Governor Ronald Reagan appointed Ken to the California State Board of Landscape Architects where he served for eight years. While a student at Corona High, he met his wife, the former Carol Emerson. They raised five children, Cindy, Ron, Teri Lyn, Julie and Darrel. Like their parents, all graduated from Corona High. Today, Ron is a key member of K&A. Locally, the Ingalls Equestrian Event Center in Norco was designed by K&A as well as the George A. Ingalls Veterans Memorial Plaza. In Corona, Ken designed the fountain at the Historic Civic Center, the Dos Lagos lakes and walkway, Jameson Park, Lincoln Park and the trees on Sixth, to name just a few projects. Learn more about Ken and his company at www.kammeyer.com.
JOYCE PAVEZ
In January 1972, Joyce Pavez and her late husband, Jorge, opened Pavez Insurance Agency in Corona. Together they built an organization that forty-five years later, continues to prosper. The Pavezs also raised their three children in Corona, Chris, Kana and Joy. Despite the demands of a busy insurance agency, Joyce has always been able to find the time to be very active in Soroptomist International of Corona, an organization dedicated to helping women. She is a past president and current member of the organization’s board of directors. The Soroptomists have helped Joyce in her personal mission to educate young women in how to best be prepared for their lives. Joyce has contributed to many endeavors to achieve that end. For example, she worked to establish the infant development center at Corona High School where students with infants can have their children on campus, allowing them to continue their education. Joyce was instrumental in developing Dreams & Decisions, a program which helps to empower middle school aged girls. She participates in Inspire Life Skill Training that assists young women aging out of foster care. In addition, Joyce worked to bring services for domestic violence victims to Corona. With son Chris now handling the day to day operations of Pavez Insurance Agency, Joyce spends time traveling. She enjoys visiting her ranch in Jorge’s native Chile. The ranch produces grapes that are picked by a local vintner and who in exchange returns bottles of wine. Joyce Pavez has made life better for numerous women and the Corona Chamber of Commerce is pleased to recognize her with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
GERALDO “JERRY” PUGA
Jerry was born in Arlington in 1935. His family lived in Alberhill, where his father worked in clay products manufacturing. The Puga’s moved to Corona when Jerry was ten. When he was finished with school, he followed his father into clay manufacturing. An uncle advised him that he could do better. Following the suggestion, Jerry began his career in floor coverings at Larry Graebner’s Furniture in Corona. Except for a tour of duty in the Army, Jerry was in the carpet/floor covering business for over fifty years. Corona was without the convenience of a carpet store until 1960 when Jerry and his partner, the late Frank Addleman opened the doors to Jerry & Frank’s Carpets. The pair had worked as flooring installers for Graebners, where floor products were a sideline. When they closed, it was the start of Jerry having his own store for nearly fifty years. While conducting business at a local bank, fortuitously, Jerry met Andrea Martinez, whom he married in 1970. They became business partners with Andrea instituting home decorating. The business changed its name to Jerry’s Carpets & Interiors and opened on the Corona Mall. Andrea was elected to the Corona City Council in 1992 and served two terms. Jerry has been an active member of the Corona Rotary and has participated in numerous local charitable causes. After serving customers in six decades, Jerry retired in 2008. Jerry continues to live by his lifetime credo, “Never disrespect people and treat everyone the same.” Good advice for everyone.
CASSANDRA SANDERSHOLLY – LEAPS & BOUNDS
The Corona Chamber of Commerce is honored to select Dr. Cassandra Sanders-Holly, Founder and Director of Leaps & Bounds Pediatric Therapy, as the recipient of the Rising Star Award. Dr. Sanders-Holly was raised in Norco. In June 2010 she opened Leaps and Bounds. Her intentions were to see a few patients and focus on teaching at her alma mater, the University of Southern California. It quickly became apparent to her that there was a local need for her physical therapy expertise, and Leaps & Bounds became a thriving clinic. Leaps & Bounds provides physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy services for children of all ages who are at risk for, or have difficulty participating in, typical age-appropriate activities. Leaps & Bounds’ capable staff serves clients from birth to the age of 22. There are 600 patients that are served by a staff of 30 each week. Dr. Sanders-Holly is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, with a Board Certification specialty in pediatric physical therapy. She is an adjunct faculty member at the University of Southern California. She is trained in Hippotherapy, which translated, means “treatment with the help of a horse.” Dr. Sanders-Holly utilizes the movement of horses to improve motor skills and postural strength. She is a leading educator and researcher in the field. Her team of dedicated professionals and volunteers enhances the lives of special children every day. Dr. Sanders-Holly and her husband, Greg Holly, have two children, Ella and Hudson, whom they are watching grow along with Leaps & Bounds.
Crossroads Church to be recognized for their Community Service
W
hen Corona’s founding fathers laid out the plans for their new town, then called South Riverside, they generously donated property lots to six churches. One of those was the Church of Christ, which evolved into the Crossroads Christian Church. This year Crossroads celebrates its 125th anniversary in the Circle City. The first building the congregation opened was the repurposed original one-room school house that stood on Ninth Street between Victoria and Howard. As membership grew, a beautiful new sanctuary was built on the southwest corner of Main & Ninth Streets. In December of 1964, a new church was dedicated at South Main
and Rancho Road. Finally, the big move was made to the current beautiful location at Ontario and Kellogg, east of Santana Park. Crossroads has a long history of participating in civic activities. Their outreach to the Corona Chamber includes: The Economic Summit in June. In September, they hosted The Corona Chamber’s annual Women’s Leadership Conference, where near 900 women, including high school students, were inspired by a dynamic lineup of leaders that have made a difference. From two dozen members, Crossroads Church now has a congregation of over 6000 people who have the common desire of
sharing their devotion to their faith with everyone. Among their treasured contributions to others is “The Pantry,” a ministry that feeds and cares for the hungry. Corona is fortunate that a few residents had a dream 125 years ago that
took root and produced good works that have never ceased. Crossroads Christian Church will receive the Community Partner – Non- Profit Award from the Corona Chamber at the January 25, 2018 Installation and Awards Gala.

The tradition of caring that culminated in the establishment of Corona Regional Medical Center (CRMC) began in 1933, with the founding of Corona Community Hospital. Since that time the hospital has changed to meet the needs of the rapidly growing community. The hospital is now a 238-bed community hospital network comprised of a 160-bed acute care hospital and a 78-bed rehabilitation campus. It employs more than 1,000 trained healthcare workers and has a medical staff of approximately 300 physicians representing more than 40 specialties. These are progressive times for CRMC. In the past year a new Emergency Room, with four times more space for advanced care, was completed. The Emergency Room features a rapid medical evaluation area, an internal waiting room, multiple entry points, a private section for pediatric patients and a new imaging center with MRI and a computed tomography scanning machine. A sure sign of the success of CRMC are the patient satisfaction scores that have risen dramatically in the last year. This is a direct result of new processes that have been instituted to address quality initiatives. CRMC has been awarded the Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award for 2017 and has been rated among the top 5% in the Nation for patient safety for the past two years. CRMC has successfully responded to our community’s longing for a facility with an improved medical delivery system. They are committed to continually implementing improvement to fulfill patient needs. CRMC is most deserving of the Corona Chamber of Commerce recognition for Health and Wellness Business of the Year.

One of our Nations great business success stories is headquartered in Corona. DeAnne Stidham was a single mother raising seven children when she started LuLaRoe. Her desire to make a living while working from home fueled her dream of creating her own clothing line. Today tens of thousands are selling garments created by DeAnne’s company, LuLaRoe. The company’s name is created from a combination of the name of three of DeAnne’s grandchildren. LuLaRoe is a network based marketing company that offers thousands of different designs and style to their sellers (independent retailers), for resale to a vast customer base. Garments are produced in limited quantities so that each consultant has a different selection of merchandise. Customers realize this and are anxious to purchase unique designs that sellout fast. Independent retailers utilize different methods to introduce the LuLaRoe line including in-person and on-line parties. After purchasing clothing articles from the company, each independent retailer establishes their own pricing. DeAnne Stidham, who works with her husband Mark, says that LuLaRoe exists to provide an opportunity for people to create freedom by selling comfortable, affordable, stylish clothing, and offering its consultants the independence to set their own pace and schedule. DeAnne is delighted that this system allows LuLaRoe independent retailers to fulfill the same goal that motivated her to start the company, to spend more time with their families. LuLaRoe employs over 700 people at their Corona headquarters. The Corona Chamber of Commerce is pleased to recognize them as the Retail Business of the Year!

The company has been in Corona since 1998. Two men from South Africa are key to the success of Monster. Rodney C. Chamber 2020 cont’d Chamber’s Sacramento summit. At the Sacramento Summit, the Corona Chamber and over 20 business leaders, just like you, worked with leaders from CalTrans, infrastructure planning, job creation, and several other key employment development areas to begin a regional planning process focused on developing career building jobs, better infrastructure, while helping increase access to great health care. “We have put together an initial framework to ensure that Corona and our Region are put first in line when we are competing for infrastructure projects,” said Yolanda Carrillo (Corona Norco Family YMCA) who will lead this program, and is slated to be Chairman of the Board for the Corona Chamber in 2019, in testimony before the City of Corona Finance, Legislation and Economic Development Subcommittee of the City Council. “We recognize that other regions are extremely successful at capturing their stats on growth and development,” continued Carrillo. “Now we are working on a framework to pull together all of our stats on growth and development; healthcare access; and infrastructure project outcomes to explain to employers and physicians why they should locate here, AND, to regional, state, and national agencies why they should partner with Corona to continue to build great infrastructure.” The Corona 2020 Strategy will ANALYZE opportunities for Corona to improve. BRING leaders together to share their expertise and CREATE measurable progress towards goals. There are three main components: Employment; Healthcare and Infrastructure. EMPLOYMENT: The partnership will work with employers to attract or develop 7,000 jobs by the end of 2020.
The average Corona worker commutes almost 36 minutes to and from work with many commuting much, much longer. We will honor and recognize employers who hire new staffing for jobs. Our first business we will highlight, see page 12 of this issue, will be Premier Auto Armor. If your company is expanding, please outreach to
the Corona Chamber so we can add your success to the growing employment picture for our community. In turn, your success in adding employees will help us compete nationally for the resources necessary to continue to improve roads and other important infrastructure across our community. HEALTH CARE: By 2020, the partnership will work with physicians and leaders to attract up to 50 new practices here. Increasing the quality of care, enabling additional services in Corona is vital to our future. Many residents drive to Orange County and outside of Corona for their healthcare services. The Corona Chamber will work on embracing and bringing services and physician offices to the greater Corona area. INFRASTRUCTURE: The partnership will work with leaders to eliminate 1,000,000 hours of traffic in our community by the end of 2020. Saving energy and wasted time will make every life better. Time is money, and waiting in traffic wastes numerous hours, creates frustration and causes less quality of life. While this goal will not end traffic, eliminating unnecessary and wasteful time on the road will help minimize delays. To learn more, contact the Corona Chamber at 951.737.3350.

Las Vegas Tragedy O
n behalf of the UHS hospitals in Southern California – Corona Regional Medical Center, Southwest Healthcare, Palmdale Regional Medical Center and Temecula Valley Hospital– we would like to recognize the valiant efforts of our sister UHS hospitals in Las Vegas. The staff at these hospitals cared for 229 of the victims of the October 1st tragedy. In a letter to the organization, hours after the event, President of UHS, Marc Miller, expressed his heartfelt gratitude for these hospitals stepping up to this tremendous challenge: “Late Sunday night, our Valley Health System (VHS) hospitals in Las Vegas activated their emergency protocols in response to what has become the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. The Emergency Rooms at our six area hospitals – Desert Springs, Spring Valley, Henderson, Valley, Summerlin, and Centennial Hills – received a flood of private vehicles, ambulances, police cars, and taxis. Our clinical teams sprang into action, responding quickly and skillfully, providing the quality care for which we are so well known. Additional emergency physicians, surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and support staff were called in for emergency

surgery and other procedures. Our hospitals maximized available beds in our ER, Intensive Care Units, and Intermediate Care Units to accommodate admissions. In total, we received 229 patients, nearly half the total number of reported injured. The majority could be successfully stabilized; however, many are still in critical condition at our hospitals. Our thoughts and prayers are with all who have suffered and are currently impacted by this tragic event. We hereby express our heartfelt gratitude to our VHS employees for their valiant efforts – for treating the wounded and the heartbroken, for stepping up to the tremendous challenge that presented itself Sunday night. And on a broader scale, we applaud the dedication and compassion of our staff, who immediately respond – in every crisis situation, regardless of scale, across the country. We salute our clinical teams for their commitment to give their very best to every patient, every day. And we thank those in non-clinical roles for their contributions in supporting those who are at the front lines. To all our employees – thank you for what you do each day. Patient care is personal, and it always will be.”
Merikans Freedom Supports Community
M
erikans Freedom Brand is a company that began this year with the purpose of paying homage to veterans. The idea of Tuan Nguyen was to create patriotic-themed shirts. Since its start, a portion of the profits are being distributed directly to veterans’ organizations throughout Southern California. When Hurricane Harvey devastated the Houston area, Tuan and his buddy Matthew Hoag wanted to use the same mindset and help the hurricane’s victims. Utilizing social media, they began rallying family and friends together to obtain donations. Within a week, a trailer of donated supplies was ready for delivery. In the meantime, Tuan also created a shirt whose sales would go to those affected by the disaster. The group is focusing on the city of Katy, Texas, where the flooding caused
many families to lose everything. With schools closed and businesses unable to operate, they were drawn to the many opportunities to help. Once the provisions are delivered, they will stay and help with the cleanup. Merikans Freedom Brand has also responded to the Las Vegas shooting tragedy. Coronan Kristina Staple was seriously wounded by the shooter. A shirt to raise funds for her care has also been created. All are encouraged to purchase the Merikcans products and show their support for these important causes. You can find items to purchase on their website at merikans.myshopify.com. A Facebook page “Merikans Brands” that details their latest activities has also been created to keep everyone updated on their products and causes.

Native American Veteran Memorial
T
he Riverside National Cemetery Support Committee (RNCSC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to provide upkeep and support to the Riverside National Cemetery while providing activities for veterans, their families and the community. Memorials built at Riverside National Cemetery are built and maintained with private funds. The RNCSC has provided funds for the cemetery’s Medal of Honor Memorial, POW/MIA Statue and Plaza, and the Soldiers Memorial. They have also provided funding to repair and maintain the Fountain and provide golf carts to transport handicapped visitors. The RNCSC has raised millions of dollars to honor those who have served our country, and their work continues. The RNCSC hosts numerous events each year, such as the Concert for Heroes event and Memorial
and Veterans’ Day ceremonies. They also provide services for the families of veterans, such as the Remembrance of Love Project, and providing the Indigent Unclaimed Veterans Ceremony. The RNCSC needs help to gather funds for their current project, a Native American Veteran Memorial. They are working hard to achieve their goal of $3.5 million for construction, plus enough for an endowment fund for maintenance. This is in addition to the $300,000 the RNCSC needs annually to meet their existing commitments. Corona Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors member Jim Gore of Vulcan Materials is also on the Board of the RNCSC. On behalf of the Committee, Jim invites all to find out more by visiting their website, rncsc.org. Contributions can be sent to: Riverside National Cemetery Support Committee, P.O. Heather’s Healthy Corner
M
otivational speaker, Jim Rohn, famously said that we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with and I completely agree. If we want to be truly healthy, we need to be aware of the people we choose to spend our lives with. When it comes to relationships, we are greatly influenced, whether we like it or not, by those closest to us. It affects our way of thinking, our decisions and our outlook. Being around negativity and anger breeds the same. Being around positivity and hope reaps its rewards for sure! Healthy relationships create a healthy being and encourage us to
be our best self in the work place and at home. We are stronger together. Mind. Body. Spirit.

Premier Auto Armor By Don Williamson
N
ick Blek opened his automobile protective film installation company, Premier Auto Armor, in his garage in November 2014. Business grew and in April 2016, he moved into his first workshop. Just six months later, he needed an even larger space and expanded to his current location at 109 Maple, Unit E in Corona. With more and more customers discovering his services, this month Premier Auto Armor reaches another milestone, Nick has hired his first employee. Premier Auto Armor specializes in the exacting process of placing a protective polyurethane film on
automobiles. The covering protects the portions of the vehicle where the paint job is most vulnerable to damage from gravel, rocks, splattered chemicals, scuffs and everyday elements. Customers may opt to have a “clear bra” which protects everything in front of the windshield or the entire frame. Nick, grew up in St. Louis with hopes of a career in law enforcement. With few job opportunities available when he completed his education, in 2010 he began working in the automobile covering business. When his wife Sarah’s employer offered her a transfer to California, the couple

headed for Corona. Since their move sons, Liam and Nolan have joined the family, which welcomes regular visits from family that still lives in Missouri and Sarah’s home country of France. Nick is an experienced “Master Installer” that takes pride in being an expert in a business with few specialists. “We are like a clothing tailor,” Nick says, “Everyone uses the same material, but not everyone gets quality results. We work with surgical precision” Premier Auto Armor’s new employee, Nate Lohman, is also experienced in the industry and Nick knows he will quickly meet Premier’s exacting standards. With his new staff member, Nick plans to continue to grow his business. In conclusion, Nick adds, “I am not the type of guy that sells “snake oil,” integrity is the most important thing to me. Giving our customers value and quality will increase our loyal customer base.” Visit Premier Auto Sales or their website at www. premierautoarmor.com
Women 2017 TO WAT C H
Trail bl azer
Affectionately known as “The Cone Lady,” Elaine Norland controls traffic and ensures safety on California’s busy streets and freeways. She is the president and CEO of A Cone Zone, a temporary traffic control company that provides road signs and safety services for street closures and construction sites. The company also offers services at parades, marathons and special events like the City of Riverside’s Annual Festival of Lights. With more than 35 years of experience in the construction industry, Elaine is a veteran in the male-dominated field. She learned her way around a construction site when she was just a little girl. She and her six brothers and sisters helped her father, who was an electrical contractor. As an adult, Elaine worked for a home builder and learned everything about building houses from the ground up — from contract administration to hands-on field experience. In 2003, after working three years for a traffic control company, Elaine coupled her construction knowledge with traffic control and opened A Cone Zone. On a shoestring budget, she purchased a used traffic truck, 100 cones, a few signs and an arrow board. She pounded the pavement and literally went knocking on construction trailer doors. She secured her first contract quickly and her company has experienced continued growth and success ever since. Her client list features a Who’s Who of construction contractors like Hillwood, Sukut, Henkels & McCoy, and AtkinsonWalsh, as well as public utilities and municipalities such as Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, L.A. Public Works, City of Riverside, City of Corona, and City of Fontana, to name a few. In 2011, Elaine saw her business double in revenue from less than $1 million to $2.1 million. That year she was also named a finalist for the Spirit of the Entrepreneur Award. Elaine was just honored as the 2016 Women Business Owner of the Year for the State of California by NAWBO as well as a finalist for the 2016 Women Business Owner of the Year for the National NAWBO. A Cone Zone was honored by the Corona Chamber of Commerce on August 12, 2016 with the Award of Excellence Service. Elaine was also a finalist in the general category for the “Spirit of the Entrepreneur 2016” award held last November. Elaine is passionate about serving her clients exceptionally well and credits customer service as the key to her company’s longevity and success. When she’s not working to provide clients with traffic control products and services, Elaine is actively involved in her community. She serves on the board of the Corona-Norco YMCA and is an active member of NAWBO, the Corona Host Lions and the Corona Chamber of Commerce. She is also heavily involved in the fundraising events for Peppermint Ridge, a non-profit organization empowering individuals with developmental disabilities. To keep her young, Elaine is raising her granddaughter, Bailey, and coaching her on the ins and outs of owning a business. An avid outdoors-woman, Elaine enjoys camping, fishing and hunting with her family. She loves sporting clays and sees parallels in hunting and business in this advice: “Stay focused on your target or goals and never give up!”

Dean has also traveled to the state of Indiana with a joint Navy/ Corona community delegation to tour NAV-SEA facilities. Dean takes his responsibilities very seriously.
