Big Changes for Small Businesses Our Fight for You NEW CALIFORNIA EMPLOYMENT LAWS SIGNED
S
everal new employment-related laws have been put in place affecting areas such as COVID-19, leaves of absence and privacy. Notably, the California Family Rights Act (CFRA) has been expanded under SB 1383 to include all employers with five or more employees—much fewer than the previous requirement of 50+ employees. You have until January 1st to comply with the new bill, which requires employers to give eligible employees unpaid, job protected leave from employment for certain family or
medical reasons. Unsurprisingly, various COVID-19-related laws have been put in place over the last six weeks. Here is a rundown of the most important new legislature: • SB 1159 went into effect on September 17th and expands work-related injuries to include “illness or death resulting from COVID-19 under specified circumstances.” It creates the presumption that those who contract COVID-19 while working outside of their homes, did so during employment. Typically,

employees are required to provide evidence that their injury or illness is work related before receiving any benefits. SB 1159 will stay in effect until January 1st, 2023. • AB 1867 requires all employers with 500 or more employees to provide COVID-19-related paid sick leave, as long as staff meet ... he Corona Chamber of Commerce is the leading advocate for businesses in the City of Corona. In our leadership role to support businesses, we act as a catalyst, convener and champion for business needs and issues.
Because many Corona businesses are impacted by the homeless issue, the Chamber actively participated in the development of the City’s Homeless Strategic Plan. Examples of the Chamber’s involvement include convening strategic plan

community engagement meetings with the Chamber’s Board of Directors, Good Morning Corona, and other follow up meetings with businesses in the City. The Chamber of Commerce also conducted follow up outreach to make sure that Corona businesses had the opportunity to complete surveys that helped to shape the strategies and interventions outlined in the City’s Homeless Strategic Plan. In the spirit of our ongoing partnership with the City of Corona, we wanted to provide you with a few updates and achievements related to the City’s Homeless Strategic Plan:
STATE GRANT AWARD
On July 6, 2020, the City of
Corona submitted a fiveyear homeless grant request to the State Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD). On September 16, 2020, State HCD confirmed the City of Corona’s grant request was approved!! Because this is a five-year grant, the City is eligible to receive up to $3.4 million over five years. $582,003 will be available to the City in FY 2021 to support operation of the planned emergency shelter and navigation center on Harrison Street.
