T
he City of Glendale has long described itself as “a thriving cosmopolitan city that is rich in history, culturally diverse, and offers limitless opportunities” and a series of recent reports have confirmed Glendale’s position as a top city to live, work, and play.
With a renowned Water & Power Department, the community rests assured that their utilities remain clean and functional with competitive rates. Glendale’s Police & Fire Departments contribute to the community’s title as one of the safest cities in the nation. Capital Improvement Projects completed by Glendale’s Public Works Department are recognized for their excellence by the State. Glendale’s recreational opportunities include 45 park facilities and eight libraries. The quality of life these services provide is matched by the thriving culture created by local businesses in the downtown. Major growth in the downtown is nestled in the Arts & Culture District of Glendale which is home to the historic Alex Theatre, Museum of Neon Art, and Central Library. The arts are further enriched by the Brand Library & Art Center’s recent renovations, returning the mansion to its original grandeur. Glendale offers a vibrant 18 hour day, both in the downtown area and charming neighborhoods like the bohemian Adams Hills, quaint Kenneth Village and picturesque Montrose. These enchanting areas provide the small town feel that residents enjoy for leisurely shopping and weekly farmers markets. The preserved mid-century look also appeals to the region’s thriving film industry. In the eastern part of the city, with access through Glenoaks Canyon, is the Scholl Canyon Golf and Tennis Center,
which includes an 18-hole executive golf course and sports facility for youth and adult recreation. (The view of Glendale and surrounding area is spectacular!) Other popular facilities include the multi-use Glendale Sports Complex, Verdugo Park (site of many community events), Fremont Tennis Center, and Brand Park, which houses the Brand Library and Art Center, one of the best art and music libraries in America.
In addition to parks, other city maintained facilities and recreational activities are available for the public’s use and participation. Some popular points of interest include the Civic Auditorium and historical buildings such as the Casa Adobe, Verdugo Adobe, Tea House, and the Doctors’ House. The Doctors’ House Victorian Museum derives its name from four doctors and their families who lived here in succession during Glendale’s early history. Originally located in the downtown area, the Queen Anne/Eastlake house was moved to Brand Park in 1980 and restored by the Glendale Historical Society, with support from the city. This landmark 1890 museum houses the Nell Shipman exhibit, spotlighting the silent filmmaker who rented the house from 1917 to 1920. Located adjacent to Verdugo Park, the Civic Auditorium is home to many community events and is often the site of shows and exhibitions. Glendale is home to Forest Lawn Memorial-Park, one of America’s best known cemeteries. Forest Lawn is noted for its extensive art and sculpture collection, which attracts thousands of visitors each year. G

By Jim Farber It’s one of those picture-perfect summer afternoons in Glendale. The sky is a bright blue with a few wisps of white clouds. SHOPPING Glendale Galleria
In the grand plaza of the Americana at Brand everyone is enjoying themselves. They’re watching the pulsating spray of the fountains. They’re going in and out of the center’s exceptional array of stores. They’re sitting down and browsing through any number of delectable menus featuring everything from designer cupcakes and cappuccinos, to fresh garden salads, pasta primavera, succulent burgers and Baja fish tacos. Sunbeams are glinting off the cast iron matrix of the center’s own Eifel Tower and great golden statue, “Spirit of American Youth,” a recreation of the 1949 sculpture that stands at the Omaha Beach Memorial in France commemorating the soldiers that gave their lives during the invasion of Normandy. Clearly a favorite with locals and visitors alike, the Americana at Brand, says retail manager James Little, represents the newest generation of shopping centers. Its mixed-use elements combine upscale brand name shopping with a state-of-the-

art movie palace, varietal dining experiences, and a stylish residential community all rolled into one. Add the outdoor ambience (with just a dash of Disneyland and Las Vegas for color and spice) plus a vintage replica trolley to evoke the golden age of LA’s “Red Cars,” and you can see why the Americana at Brand is a hit. At the same time, people are also taking advantage of another major shopping opportunity just across the street— the totally renovated Glendale Galleria. Enclosed within its 1,500,000 square feet of space are multiple levels lined with stores large and small where one can find everything from a new garden hose at Target to the most elegant bauble or accessory at Bhindi Jewelers, Bloomingdales or Gucci. Glendale’s shopping renaissance has also had an uplifting impact on the city’s signature thoroughfare— Brand Boulevard. This might include a concert or special event at the beautifully restored Alex Theatre or the Museum of Neon Art. It most
certainly has been a stimulus for the multitude of eateries that line the boulevard with many offering outdoor seating that lends a European air. Almost any type of cuisine you could desire is here, from Thai, Persian, Mexican and Italian, to Indian, Chinese, Japanese and American. Meanwhile, a few miles away, a distinctly more intimate community event is taking place— the Sunday Harvest Market and Marketplace in the Montrose Shopping District. But just as at the Galleria and Americana, there is a wonderful sense of energetic hustle and bustle. This traditional farmers market, with its long row of vendor stalls under shading white tents, offers the best produce and flowers from certified Southern California growers as well as a delicious variety of prepared foods. And if the perfect peach is not all you’re searching for, there are stores surrounding the Marketplace that offer a tempting array of Antiques, Roadshow-worthy collectibles, and artisan crafts. even a children’s area guaranteed to keep the kids entertained. The way one happy shopper, Ms. Orsolya D. of North Hollywood sees it, “The Montrose Shopping Park is like a trip through a time machine and into the past where all the locals gather to both shop for all of their goods and also feel a sense of community. You can almost see the horse-drawn carriages of the 1800s clopping down the street. The area encompasses one main street (Honolulu) with a few channels wavering off filled with small, local businesses.” It’s this variety of opportunities that makes Glendale a shoppers’ delight. But it wasn’t always like this. For a long time Glendale was like that 90-pound weakling who was always having sand kicked in his face. It is the opinion of Rick Lemmo, Senior Vice President of Caruso Affiliated (creators of the Americana at Brand) and member of the Downtown Glendale Association, Glendale suffered from an identity crisis.

THE MONTROSE SHOPPING PARK IS LIKE A TRIP THROUGH A TIME MACHINE
“Glendale always had potential,” he explains. “But the community and its leadership had convinced themselves that they were JUST GLENDALE living in the shadow of Pasadena and Los Angeles.” As Lemmo points out, a renaissance does not happen overnight. The momentum to create a new and revitalized Glendale took place in stages, from the sale and reconceived design of the Glendale Galleria, to the renovation of the Alex Theatre, and the 2008 opening of the Americana at Brand. “The city needed to get aggressive and attract businesses away from other cities. And we did that,” says Lemmo with a distinct note of civic pride. “We started putting all our assets to work. City employees helped expedite permits. The Economic Redevelopment Department started working with businesses to promote the city as a prime location. Things began to happen. We made substantial progress. And with progress, the selfdoubt went away. Now it’s put-thepedal-to-the-metal time and Glendale is in charge of its own future. It’s one of the most spectacular turnaround (continued on page 22)

As a key player in the Glendale business community, Brent Gardner is the new kid on the block. He’s only been at his post as General Manager of the Glendale Galleria since April. But Gardner has a clear-eyed view of the important role the Galleria plays. “My approach is that business breeds business. Being outdoors, the Americana attracts a lifestyle approach. People love the look of the place and the restaurants. But anything that makes Glendale better makes the Galleria better— as long as we are able to stay fresh, innovative and exciting to consumers. And I think we are. “As they say, Gardner points out, “Competition is a rising tide that raises all boats. Malls are incredibly important to the community. The Glendale Galleria is a place where people come to discover fashion, meet up with friends, grab a bite and enjoy dressing casually. We offer a million and half square feet of enclosed, safe shopping and dining outlets. We’re continuing to add appealing fashion-driven stores like Ted Baker and Bloomingdales. But we also offer practical stores like Penny’s and Target. “One of my goals personally, is to find ways for the Glendale Galleria to play a key role in the community,” says Gardner, who grew up in a small town in Indiana. “To that end, we’ve been working closely with Habitat for Humanity. It’s a great way for us to give something back to the community that supports us.” Back at the Americana the perfect summer day is drifting toward evening. The white clouds over the Eifel Tower are tinged with pink and the myriad lights that give the center its Disneyland allure are coming on. It’s time for the nighttime festivities to begin! G

DOWNTOWN GLENDALE ASSOCIATION The creation of the Downtown Glendale Association in 2012 only confirmed what the locals already knew - that Downtown Glendale is a place that has it all. No other downtown in Los Angeles County is quite like Glendale’s. Let's talk entertainment. The Alex Theatre, after a multi-million dollar renovation, brings in high quality music and theatre every week. In addition to The Alex, there’s MGN Five Star Cinema: a luxury-inspired movie theater with its own restaurant, that offers in-theatre dining among other amenities. Let's talk dining. Downtown Glendale is a foodie’s dream. Offerings range from traditional Armenian cuisine to familiar, nationally-recognized restaurants. There is something for everyone, and every palate, in Downtown Glendale. Let's talk living. Over the last few years, developers have been creating high-quality residences that attract young professionals, as well as families, to Downtown Glendale; and there's more to come! Brand Boulevard is lined with fitness options, ranging from household names in the fitness industry, to popular and locally-owned fitness programs. Let's talk jobs. Well-known employers take pride in calling this Downtown district home, and more are moving in regularly. Let's talk shopping. If you haven't been to The Americana at Brand, it is a truly unique retail and entertainment adventure. And right next door is the Glendale Galleria. This combination provides a convenient and unique shopping experience that is found exclusively in Downtown Glendale. Downtown Glendale Association | 818.476.0121 | www.DowntownGlendale.com

ARTS
A vibrant arts and culture sector is important for any community trying to hold its own in the competitive arena of quality of life. But in Glendale, it’s not about keeping up with the competition. It’s about taking it to a higher level, elevating arts and culture to a priority within the community’s plans for the present and the future. The City considers support of arts and culture to be a priority, and sees it as a key component to not only maintaining an exceptional quality of life, but also an asset that generates employment and other economic opportunities. “The arts are the best expression of what a community is all about,” says Glendale City Manager Scott Ochoa. “If Glendale has the identity of an active

arts community, it will attract people from all over. And if people come to live and work here, or just visit, they also want to play and be entertained. It’s a combination where everyone benefits: it’s good for the arts, good for commerce and good for business.” The City has an Arts and Culture Commission that maintains a current and active Arts and Culture Plan. The Commission works to consciously integrate arts and culture into the daily life of those who live, work and play in Glendale. Recent renovations of Glendale’s historic Brand Library and Art Center, the preservation of Glendale’s legendary Alex Theatre and the development of the Museum of Neon Art are just a few examples of the community’s

commitment to placing arts and culture center stage in Glendale. Residents and visitors can keep up with the community’s well-rounded arts and culture calendar at www.glendalearts.org. G

Glendale’s southern California location means restaurants have access to some of the freshest produce available, so, of course, California-style cuisine is well represented. The city’s chefs delight diners with inventive and tasty dishes featuring fresh, locally grown ingredients. Glendale has a diverse population, evident in the wide variety of cuisine choices available at local restaurants. 28

Diners with international tastes can find quite a selection to excite their palates and even bring back memories of trips abroad. Ethnic cuisine is a cornerstone of the Glendale restaurant scene, and residents and visitors can take their taste buds on a trip around the world without ever leaving the city. Middle Eastern food is nearly as ubiquitous as American food in Glendale. Kabob is a local favorite and the city has no shortage of restaurants and bakeries creating and serving authentic Middle Eastern staples. Asia is represented well with restau-

Southern California is a car culture, with car enthusiasts’ tastes running the gamut from vintage to modern luxury automobiles, and everything in between. Car shows abound and Glendale is host to one of the region’s best. Glendale’s Annual Cruise Night event is one of Southern California’s largest and most popular car shows. The event typically takes place in July and has seen attendee counts as high as 50,000. It’s been a summer staple for Glendale residents for more than 20 years and now attracts visitors from across the region. Cruise Night is a big event, taking over a portion of downtown Glendale
to accommodate the car entries and the rest of the evening’s activities. The show features more than 400 pre-1980 model automobiles on display and is free to attend, thanks to generous support from a number corporate sponsors. Live music and Cruise Night’s Fireworks Spectacular help create a festival style atmosphere and add even more reasons for attendees to spend
the day meandering through the show’s outdoor showcase of classic car history. In the crowd you will find a delightful mix of families just out to have fun and car enthusiasts enjoying the ultimate autophile’s fix. But it’s not all show; there are trophies to be had. Participants can enter their cars in ten categories for the chance to drive off with a win. Glendale’s pleasant weather, pictur-

It can be difficult for cities that are geographically considered to be part of a larger metropolitan area to develop a sense of community and a sense of place for their residents. But Glendale seems to have cracked the code on this challenge, and that’s evident in the community’s desire to be the healthiest place it can be. Glendale has plenty of assets to help support the effort. Multiple community parks and recreation centers offer residents plenty of opportunities to stay active. The City owns and manages more than 5,000 acres of natural open space and Glendale’s 30 miles of fire roads
and 7.5 miles of single track trails are frequented by hikers, joggers, dog walkers and mountain bikers every day. The Brand Park Trail is a favorite. This 6.5mile trail used primarily for hiking, is rated as moderate in intensity and rewards hikers with beautiful views along the way.
HEALTH
There are plenty of options to help Glendale residents stay fit and healthy. But in Glendale, the commitment to be a healthier community runs much deeper. The effort is nothing short of collaborative, with multiple organizations coming together toward this common goal. Glendale’s Healthier Community Coalition (GHCC) serves as the hub, coordinating the efforts of more than 50 organizations and individuals as they address shared

The organization founded the Glendale Healthy Kids program as its first project, bringing together several community partners to help ensure that all of Glendale’s children had access to health care and health education. That project was just the beginning of what is now a broad program of work that promotes disease
prevention, health education, clean and safe environments, adequate housing, affordable and quality education and community revitalization. It’s a holistic approach to community health and GHCC’s work and influenc in the community is made stronger by its 52 partners, including the community’s three award-winning hospitals. REAL ESTATE Glendale is a city with a lot of curb appeal – its Mediterranean climate, picturesque scenery and proximity to the coast give it a natural advantage. It also benefits from being enveloped by a major metropolitan area. Access to the amenities of nearby Los Angeles is an added bonus for Glendale residents. The city was recognized in 2014 by Livability.com as one of the “Top 100 Best Places to Live,” and was a finalist for the National Civic League’s “AllAmerica City Award.” And though its location provides it with a competitive edge, the city doesn’t take its position for granted, and works hard to maintain and grow community assets to keep Glendale high on the livability list. Glendale’s award-winning school system and low crime rate are two reasons that draw families to live here. But life is made even better in Glendale by the community’s commitment to making

factor. Apartments are within easy reach of downtown restaurants and shops and also have convenient access to the I-5 and 134 freeways. Downtown is just one of more than 30 neighborhoods and districts, offering Glendale residents a wide variety of choices in housing. The architectural landscape of Glendale homes is diverse, spanning several decades of style and a wide range of prices, from single-family starter houses to contemporary luxury homes. There are hillside homes with views and funky bungalows. Homes here have character, and each of the city’s neighborhoods has its own charm. Many of the city’s homes were built in the 1920’s and 1930’s, with a few more contemporary neighborhoods built out in the 80’s. Common architectural styles are Spanish, English, California Ranch and Monterey Colonial. Northwest Glendale stretches from Brand Boulevard to the Burbank border. This area of the city is comprised mostly of quiet neighborhoods with singlefamily homes. The Montrose area contains an assortment of small neighborhoods developed around a charming shopping district with all the essentials: grocery stores, banks, restaurants and specialty shops. This district takes on the feel of being its own community. The Canyons is another popular neighborhood surrounded by nature and feeling a bit like a retreat, but only minutes away from the hubbub of downtown Glendale. Apartment living is also an option and Glendale property management companies like David N. Schultz Incorporated (http://www. davidnschultzinc.com) and Trumark Real Estate Management and Services (http://www.trumarkrem.com) provide up-to-date listings of available
Glendale area apartments on their company websites. Affordable housing options are available through Camden Glendale Affordable Housing. The organization offers studio, one and two bedroom apartments. The City of Glendale strives to ensure that all of its neighborhoods are safe places, free of blight and within reasonable access to resources and services. Glendale is also considered to be one of the major business centers in California. The Charles Dunn Company serves the Glendale market in the area of commercial real estate needs. The company is one of the largest, full-service regional real estate firms in the Western United States. G

World-renowned companies such as DreamWorks Animation and the Walt Disney Creative Campus, including Walt Disney Imagineering (creators of Disney theme parks throughout the world), are based in Glendale. gered terms in office. Council elections are held on the first Tuesday in April during odd-numbered years. Every year, the Council selects a mayor from among its ranks. The mayor is responsible for presiding at City Council meetings and performing a wide range of ceremonial duties, in addition to the regular council workload. City Council members also comprise the Successor Agency of the former Redevelopment Agency and Housing Authority boards. City Council meets most Tuesdays at 6 p.m. These meetings are preceded, as needed, by Community Development and Housing. As prescribed by law, meetings are open to the public. Participation and attendance by the public are encouraged. The city clerk and city treasurer positions are elective offices; the council appoints Glendale’s city manager and city attorney. In turn, the city manager or designated representative appoints qualified individuals to serve in other city positions. More than 1,600 full-time employees work for and serve local residents. They are grouped into divisions, each led by a manager. In addition, residents are invited to apply for appointment to a variety of boards and commissions. Most city government meetings are televised locally on Charter Cable Channel 6.
