ocated in the rolling hills and coastal canyons, Laguna Niguel offers an exceptional quality of life for its population of approximately 65,000. It’s an upscale, yet laid back lifestyle where residents feel safe and have plenty of open spaces to enjoy California sun and fun. For those who still crave a little big city excitement, Los Angeles and San Diego are just an hour’s drive away. Like much of Southern California, Laguna Niguel has pleasant weather year-round, with average high temperatures ranging from 67 to 79 degrees. The city also enjoys a low crime rate. It is considered to be one of the safest cities in Orange County. In 1959, the Laguna Niguel Corporation made Laguna Niguel one of the first master-planned communities in California. Thirty years later, Laguna Niguel incorporated to become Orange County’s 29th city. The city is set against a backdrop of breathtaking scenery and it is part of the community’s foundation and culture to ensure that residents and

THE COMMUNITY BANK STORY cbank.com ||949.373.8490 The history of Community Bank exemplifies the entrepreneurial business spirit of California. SBA Preferred Lender | Member FDIC | Equal Housing Lender Two brothers, Charlie and Howard Cook, came to Southern California in the 1920s with not much more than their resourcefulness and determination to succeed. Through years of hard work, they built a company that manufactured concrete mixers.
Things changed during the Great Depression when demand was severely reduced and most banks stopped financing construction equipment. Ever resourceful, the brothers began financing equipment for their customers, who, like themselves, were small business owners. Frustrated with dealing with large banks, Charlie decided to open his own bank after World War II and on August 18, 1945, Huntington Park Bank opened its doors. In 1950, Huntington Park Bank changed its name to Community Bank to reflect its increased geographical coverage, and to underscore the Bank’s commitment to the communities it served. As the Southern California economy grew, the need for more sophisticated financial tools also grew. Community Bank’s range of services expanded to meet these needs. Today, Community Bank provides virtually every financial service needed by businesses in Southern California. What hasn’t changed is an unwavering dedication to integrity and customer service – the values so important to Charlie and Howard. Your Laguna Niguel Community Bank team remains dedicated to these values and will work hard to find customized solutions for your business.

’s get friendly. GETTING STARTED There is no time like the present to start a California native garden. Planting in the cooler months gives your plants time to establish healthy root systems while growing the foundation for attractive flowering displays. Other considerations as you get started: 4 Finding California Native Plants Due to increased demand, most retail nurseries and garden centers now offer wide varieties of salvia, poppies, flowering sage, and other colorful, water-wise vegetation. 4 To Fertilize or Not Most California native plants perform better without fertilizer. Instead, lay down a three-inch layer of mulch that slows water evaporation, minimizes weeds, cools your soil, and saves 2030 gallons of water a day! 4 Smart Irrigation Overwatering can be more harmful to your plants than under watering. For non-native drought-tolerant plants, use only the amount of water they need to live by installing weather-based controllers and/or drip irrigation systems that can also save 20-40 gallons of water a day! Or better yet, plant California natives and hand water only when necessary!
Saving Water is Beautiful Plant California Natives
For many years, the ideal Southern California landscape has been embodied by verdant green lawns and flowering annuals. Despite the winter rains, the progression of the current drought has forced Californians to realize that we have been investing in an unsustainable aesthetic. The long-term outlook for Southern California calls for drier and warmer conditions, typical for our local climate. Plants native to California flourish in such conditions. Today, the shift back to California native landscaping serves as an important tool for homeowners seeking ways to manage the current drought and help provide a long-term solution to drought-proofing California. Contrary to the common association of water-wise landscaping with cacti, agave, or even desert sand, California native landscapes feature colorful vegetation that is beautiful and functional for everyone, including children and pets. Moulton Niguel Water District is ready to help its customers learn more about
water-wise landscaping strategies and the wide variety of California native plants that are available to create an attractive, vibrant garden.
ADDITIONAL RESOURCES Below are just a few of the online resources available for those looking to install lush, colorful California native landscaping – and save money doing so! 4 FREE Landscaping Classes at Moulton Niguel Water District (www.mnwd.com/landscapeclasses) 4 California Native Plant Society Plant Database (www.calscape.cnps.org) 4 Rebates for Water Efficient Devices and Turf Removal (www.mnwd.com/rebates)
WHY PLANT CALIFORNIA NATIVES? Replacing turf saves hundreds of gallons of water each month, and Moulton Niguel offers rebates to customers who opt for a more drought-tolerant landscape. Additional reasons for planting California natives include: 4 Lower Maintenance Along with less pruning and feeding, minimal irrigation is needed beyond normal rainfall. 4 No Pesticides Because they maintain natural defenses against many destructive pests and diseases, pesticide use can be reduced or eliminated entirely. 4 Hummingbirds and Butterflies These plants attract beautiful birds and insects that pollinate garden fruits and vegetables.

City Celebrates Completion Of New Attractions
U
nder bright blue skies and the warm California sun, local residents, business leaders and special guests joined the Mayor and City Council on August 4, 2015 to celebrate the official opening of brand new attractions at Crown Valley Community Park. The new sprayground, renovated amphitheater, two new playgrounds and brand new restrooms are the first of a three-tier major improvement project planned for the Park. The new sprayground area, with approximately 20 play elements, offers a variety of dynamic, interactive experiences, including squirting, spraying, cascading, geysering and dumping of water. Recognizing California’s severe drought conditions, the sprayground
was constructed using a state-of-theart technology designed to control evaporation, be environmentally friendly and protect users’ health. The spray elements are motion activated and automatically turn off when not in use. The sprayground is open daily 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from Memorial Day through Labor Day. After Labor Day, the sprayground will only be open on weekends, weather permitting, through November 1st.
New multi-colored and multisensory playground areas that are ADA accessible, offer children fun and age-appropriate activities for strength, coordination, and balance involving all muscle groups. The newly renovated amphitheater features an elevated stage platform, enlarged dance floor, and reconstructed stage backdrop, with a cantilevered overhead structure to support a new stage lighting system. A new restroom complete with a family restroom with changing facilities, is located near the playground area where it will be conveniently accessible to other park users and amphitheater patrons.

BLAZE PIZZA
Blaze Pizza – two words. Three words to describe them – quick, innovative, and fun. This up and coming pizza place found in the Plaza de La Paz shopping center, creates the perfect opportunity for an easy meal out. It’s a friendly environment and you’ll have your pizza hot and ready in 180 seconds. That’s one of the reasons Blaze Pizza stands out from the rest. When you walk into Blaze Pizza, you’ll be welcomed by employees with smiles on their faces and a great attitude. Their happiness is contagious. Slowly you’ll walk down the line and point to exactly what you want on your pizza. All toppings are displayed right in front of you, giving you the chance to come up with hundreds of possibilities. Can’t decide if you want applewood bacon or smoked ham? Get them both. Artichokes, mushrooms, and sautéed onions? Done. Let’s not even get into the various cheeses and sauces they have to offer. Oh, did you say you’re gluten free? Order the gluten free crust and you’re good to go. MANGIA BENE CUCINA Mangia Bene Cucina is a little get away to Italy. The fresh ingredients used in their home-like cooking make you feel like you should be eating these dishes in a neighborhood piazza. Choose from their various pastas, pizzas, paninis or salads for something casual. If you’re looking for a little more gourmet, take a look at their menu for things such as chicken dishes, sautéed veal or wood roasted fresh fish. Not only does their menu look appealing, but they also have a lot to offer in the bar. The restaurant’s 7 days per week happy hour starts at 11:30am, and ends at 6:30pm. Come by during this time to enjoy a beer, spritz, or wine at the new and improved bar, unveiled this past spring. With mom and pop dishes, and a bar that will meet any drink order, there is nothing missing from a good time at Mangia Bene Cucina. Salute! Sunday – Thursday 11:30am – 9:30pm Friday and Saturday 11:30am – 10:30pm (Located between Off Broadway Shoes and Sprouts Farmers Market) 949.831.0141

CITY PROJECTS
Laguna Niguel Gateway
T
he City of Laguna Niguel is very excited to welcome the first residents in the Gateway area, which starts the transformation of an older industrial area into a transit and pedestrian-oriented urban neighborhood, with high-density housing located in proximity to jobs, services, and the Metrolink transit station. The City has been awarded $2.2 million in grant funds to help construct a multi-use trail along the entire length of Forbes Road, providing a connection from the new residential development to the Metrolink station at the south end of Forbes. Construction of the trail is anticipated to be completed by the end of December 2015. The first resident move-ins began in September 2015 with the completion of the Apex apartment project. The Skye Modern Living project was completed shortly thereafter. Two additional projects are under construction, Broadstone, the first mixed-use project on Forbes Road, and a residential project by the Picerne Group, on Cabot Road. A second mixed-use project on Forbes Road was also recently approved. Eastbound Crown Valley
widening from Cabot to I-5 was completed in April 2013. OCTA completed a 176 space parking lot expansion at the Metrolink station in October 2013. As many as 3,000 new dwelling units and 2.25 million square feet
of office, retail, restaurant, and hotel uses can be built in the Gateway Area. For more information, contact Jeff Gibson in the Laguna Niguel Community Development Department at (949) 362-4360 or visit www.CityofLagunaNiguel.org.
