Abstract In this project, we are invited to use design as a context for exploring a concept of confounding polar, binary opposities through investigating the text of Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet. This semster investigated numeous of interpretation, from conceptual drawing and model to poetics of dwelling. It is about meaning of I.

My concept is focused on three values, which are self-expression, consciousness/unconsciousness and perspective. Also, it is related to how our role and identity changes in the context of human society, such as society, family and friend. It implies distinct eyes and postitions through materials and form. 3

Reflection

In this semester, we were given a line of the poem in Romeo and Juliet that investigated through visual and 3D interpretation. I experimented different visual interpretation when we depicted the meaning of line and built a spatial concept exquisite model. It practiced my mapping and diagramming skills in the first part of this project. I was explored different drawing techniques, not only look like the model, but also depicted as another way. For instance, the drawing technique, scanning of four perspective views which is my most successful drawing. Rather than using graphic conventions of scale, plan and section, I scanned four perspective views, which emphasis the quality of material and shadow. This reminds and practices my mind into more inventive and experimental. After the mid semester, we had to move from a conceptual idea to poetic dwelling-of living-. It was a good practice that designed our concept in a real life. Moreover, it built up the Rhino skills, which is the unconventional tools that I used before. All

Act 01 Through the text Investigate the meaning of text to establish our own visual interpretation through numerous prototypes and drawings. My investigation was experimenting by quickfire drawings and models with different media and colour.

Prototype 01 Wire|Pink shower loofa For the first prototype, I used the pink shower loofa that symbolized different eyes while the wire as the structure. The wire goes into the holes of shower loofa. Its holes tell the complicated and unlimited thinking when we communicate with others.

11

12

Prototype 02 Wire|White shower loofa It is similar with the prototype 1 but I experimented different forms. It emphasizes on the material quality, the possibility of tearing and wrapping.

13

14

Prototype 03 Wire|Fishing Net|Hose I used hose as the structure of my prototype while the its ending and opening are at the same point. Besides, wire and fishing net implies different eyes and identity.

15

16

Prototype 04 Wire|Paper with texture| Cellophane For this prototype, I explored how different texture produced interesting shadow. Moreover, I played around with the wire and cellophane. Each of the materials tells the identity of us and meaning of I in the context of human society.

17

18

Prototype 05 Wire|Cellophane|Pin It is the development of prototype 04. Rather than using wire, I used pin and cellophane as the structure. In terms of the form, it is a long and continues shape that gives the sense of unlimited.

Prototype 06 Toilet paper tube| Bandage|Wire|Styrofoam The bandage goes around the toilet paper tube. When I pulled the bandage, the size of that triangle will be altered. This material, which have different possibility of modeling.

21

22

Prototype 07 Bath mat|Straw I used the bath mat and straw in this prototype. The straw goes into the holes of bath mat. The intersection of these two materials is the main important part in this stage.

Exquisite prototype 01 Decorative trim roll|Shower loofa After the previous prototypes, the quality of material plays a vital role in the context of my line. The decorative trim roll wrapped and twisted around the shower loofa. It tells the story of unlimited identity in the context of human society.

Exquisite prototype 02 Wire|Shower Loofa| Decorative tube Rather than using glue, I used the attachment of tearing a knot, warping and twisting, that generate this prototype.

Exquisite prototype 03 Wire|Decorative sheet|Crinoline

roll|EVA

This prototype is the most successful one. I have explored different materials into the aspects of continue and flowing. Those materials are tensile, moveable, easily to sketch. Especially of the EVA sheet, it looks like flat, but was actually can fold and soft. It is folded as numerous shape looks like different eyes. Its attachment that are tearing a knot, folding, rolling and tearing.

For this project, I was given a line of the poem in Romeo and Juliet, which is “I am not I if there be such an I.” I have explored this text into models and drawings. It is about the identity and meaning of I. In the poem of Romeo and Juliet, Juliet think if the nurse told her Romeo died, she will lose herself. Thus, others influence our identity and we cannot define ourselves. Also, we can control what others people think of us. My concept is focused on three values, which are self-expression, consciousness/unconsciousness and perspective. Also, it is related to how our role and identity changes in the context of human society, such as society, family and friend. In response to these concepts, I have explored different materials into the aspects of continue and flowing. That’s why my materials that I used is tensile, moveable, easily to stretch. This is similar how there is unlimited perspective and thinking while people see us.

56

I used wire, protective mat, decorative trim roll and crinoline in the exquisite model. These texture which have different possibility of modeling. Especially of the EVA sheet, it looks like a flat sheet, but was actually can fold and soft. It’s kind of allowed unlimited thinking and interpretation for everyone. It is folded as numerous shapes such as like different eyes. Its attachment that are tearing a knot, folding, rolling, tearing. (wrapping and twisted around) From the exquisite model, I go with the next stage, which involves multiples of drawing process. There are so many strong qualities of protective mat. But I just took from these important parts, which interpretates in the following techniques, 01-Scanning of 4 perspective views 02-Mapping of shadow and shape 03-Photography of details with activation 04-Collection of each pieces 05-Cutting sections with materials 06-Overlaying Plan and Elevation 07-Details: 2D drawing to 3D form 08-Details: Contour line All these qualities are translated into these drawings and mappings; it is more focused on the details that generate the spatial graphic. And it makes the interpretation on my text, that related to the identity, role and meaning of I. (eyes, position, identity)

For this project, I was given a line of the poem in Romeo and Juliet, which is “I am not I if there be such an I. I have explored this text into a practical dwelling, which is the bridge house. It is about the identity and meaning of I. My concept is focused on three values, which are self-expression, consciousness/unconsciousness and perspective. Thus, others influence our identity in the context of human society and we cannot define ourselves. Thus, I designed a bridge house that is the multifunction space for Romeo and Juliet. Inspiring from the mid- term model and drawing, I would like to design a bridge house between the river for Romeo and Juliet. Thus, I tested out different twisted and curved shape for the exterior and interior space. Also, it creates an impressive journey while people walking through the stair between each space. It is quite similar with the use of wire in the previous model. It is like the connections of the spaces.

110

In terms of material, it is used timber and white concrete, while the furniture used more smooth and soft materials, which provides the sense of comfort. It is a multi-purpose space, which includes five spaces, dining room with kitchen, relaxing space, balcony with toilet, bedroom and study room. In terms of the furniture, I am continuing using the principle of the technique of taking photography and the form of my model. Therefore, the forms are rounded and curved. There are different functions depending on different levels. For example, it is a shelf in dining room while it is a bar table. It means they will share the space in the meantime. Not but not least, although the forms of furniture look the same, but the inhabitation of R&J are different. For the whole process of this dwelling, Romeo and Juliet will inhabitant the impressive journey in the multi-functional dwellings. It is the interpretation of the meaning of quote, how there is unlimited perspective and thinking while people see us. And the forms of bridge house is looks the letter of I.
