– DOLPH SANTORINE, GMCMI PRESIDENT

Are you that person? If so, call Kim at 612-501-4600 or email kimweeksgmc@gmail.com.

Volunteers are truly the backbone of GMCMI. If you would like to get involved, reach out to your regional vice president, or to any of us with a blue badge at a GMCMI Convention. Our members have awesome skills and we invite you to put yours to great use!

GMCMI has nine regions, and each has a regional vice president. These vice presidents, along with the president, treasurer, secretary, vice president of administration, past president, national director to FMCA and alternate comprise the board of directors. There are several formal board meetings at each Convention to discuss issues that affect the chapter. A Nominating Committee was assembled at the Spring Convention in Tallahassee, Florida. They will present a slate of officers at the Fall Convention Membership Meeting, with a vote to follow.

Challenges and Suggestions: I want to challenge all of you to help with Convention site selection. There has to be more interesting sites where we could hold our Conventions. There is a convenient site selection form on the website at: gmcmi.com/site-selection-form/ and your input is critically important. Thank you for being a member and supporting the GMC Motorhome lifestyle. Hope to see you in Mansfield.

Chapters Groups

&

The GMC Community is such an important part of GMC Motorhome ownership! Without this Community, these old motorhomes would be just old motorhomes.

4

There are several GMC Motorhome Chapters of FMCA, but there are also international and other groups that form this great Community. These chapters/groups give GMC owners an opportunity to use their motorhomes while sharing information to help maintain and improve them. Also, owners can meet others who enjoy GMCs and in many cases become long-time friends. Each chapter/group has its own “personality”, and many bring GMC owners together by geographic location. But the common thread among all GMC chapters/ groups is the emphasis on keeping these vintage coaches on the road while having fun and sharing experiences.

Some Benefits of Chapter/Group Participation • New friends • Fun • Visits to interesting places • GMC Motorhome maintenance and modification tips • Safety tips • And so much more! Within the Community, GMC Motorhomes International has the largest membership. So, we would like to support the chapters/ groups and GMC Motorhome owners by offering a new program, the “GMCMI Chapters/Groups Benefit Program”. We feel strongly that this program reinforces our mission “to continue to provide fellowship and technical information through continuous improvement of communications and Conventions”.

A New Life for a 1973 – 23’ GMC Glacier Motorhome

Hunter House Burgers BY KAREN E. BREEN | 1978 ROYALE | FERNDALE, MICHIGAN

I have owned a GMC Motorhome for a mere three years; however, I have wanted one for most of my life. I was an adolescent when they were first produced. I have shared with other GMCers in my circle the brief story that my parents dreamed of retiring and traveling the USA in one. Sightings were rare, and we knew the value of them was out of our reach as a family, but we were besotted each and every time we saw one. GMCs were the future of travel and they still carry that caché for me to this day; their design is unparalleled. Design has always taken a stronghold into my life: graphic design, automobile design, and interior design. The GMC combined all those elements! I have been fascinated by the many latter-day uses of GMC Motorhomes and have sought out some of the owners. I plan on writing additional articles for the magazine featuring these unique uses. This first article focuses on the Hunter House Hamburgers, established in 1952, located in Birmingham, Michigan along historic Woodward Avenue in Metro Detroit. I had an opportunity to meet with Susan Cobb, the owner of Hunter House, and asked her some questions about their food truck choice. Q Why the GMC Motorhome? – A Our restaurant is a vintage, throwback burger diner built in 1952 on the oldest paved road in America. We wanted a food truck that fit our unique, retro feel and embodied the car culture of Detroit. We also wanted a truck with a compact footprint, as we specialize in residential private parties.

For more information go to: hunterhousehamburgers.com

GMC GMC VINTAGE VINTAGE RVING RVING MAGAZINE MAGAZINE || GMCMI.COM GMCMI.COM

Q Whose idea and vision was it to use the GMC – Motorhome? A It was my husband’s idea, Tony DeGennaro. He searched high and low for a unique idea for a food truck for over a year. He stumbled across the GMC platform and thought it was perfect. Q When was it purchased? – A Seven plus years ago. Q Which year and model? – A 1973, 23’ GMC Glacier. We could not use the 26’ because the door was in the center, which restricted the inside kitchen layout. Q How long did it take to transform the coach? – A It took two years to find a well-maintained rust-free coach. We were looking for a 23’ model, which are rare. The design process took a year, which preceded the actual purchase of the coach. Once we owned the coach, we took meticulous measurements to figure exact placement and layout of the kitchen. Q What was the cost to transform your GMC into a – food truck? A Not including the cost of the coach, it was $110,000. It was very difficult to find a company who would do the custom work.

Photos courtesy of prestigefoodtrucks.com

For youtube video go to: https://youtu.be/BfJSYCqkI20

Q Who did the mechanical, interior, and exterior – transformations? A Prestige Food Trucks in Orlando, Florida.

Q Any funny or unusual stories? – A Something funny happens every day. We are constantly honked at while driving – often from people asking if we will serve while on the road. Once, when returning in the coach after an event, we were flagged down by a radio personality who loved the truck and asked us to appear on her radio show. More than once, people we were serving have told us they used to work in the plants that designed and built these vehicles. They love coming on board and reliving their memories looking at the truck.

Q How long did the transformation take? – A It took 11 months total. Q Who was it purchased from? – A An elderly couple a few hours away from our location in Michigan. Q When and where does it travel? – A We serve at private parties and public events May through October around Metro Detroit within 20 miles from our restaurant in Birmingham, Michigan.

Q Have you been featured on TV or print ads? – If so, by whom and when? A Our restaurant is nationally well-known, therefore our food truck is a very familiar sight. When we drive down the road, people honk their horns and take videos of us on our way to an event.

Q How is it stored? – A It is winterized and stored at the restaurant, Hunter House Hamburgers. Q How many miles traveled each year? – A Approximately 2,000 miles per year. Q Is the GMC VIN number registered with the GMC Registry? – A Yes, it is. Q How many associates travel on the road and how are – they selected? A Only trained employees at our restaurant are allowed to work on the food truck. Usually two to four at a time.

Q Is there anything you want the vintage GMC Community – to know? A We love our GMC Motorcoach, love being part of the Community that owns and cares for these vintage vehicles, and are proud to be able to present it to thousands of our fans.

A GMC Motorhome Vendor Profile BY BYRON SONGER | FULL-TIMER | PREVIOUS OWNER 1978 ROYALE

Ken Henderson, the “Wiper Man” Almost everyone that has a GMC Motorhome is, at least, aware of Ken Henderson and his wonderful electric wiper conversion kit. And, those who have been to several GMCMI Conventions have surely come in contact with him one way or another and, most likely, from sitting on a panel of owners taking questions or organizing the mentor program. One could safely say, if it was on a TZE, he knows about it. Not only do many know Ken but many also know his wife, Elaine. She is not as enthusiastic as he but she has been involved in many Conventions and several rallies of other chapters. Both are a pure delight to know. Still, you are invited to read on for a documented look into the guy we know as “wiper man.” Ken and Elaine got into RVing when Ken built a teardrop trailer in 1962. Their first motorhome was a 1976 Titan in 1978. There have been several others over the years until they went to a show and came home with a 1997 Safari diesel pusher. (Ken can tell you about the day he proudly drove it past the Officer’s Club.) And this is where the plot thickens. You see, the Safari was sort of the reason for the GMC. The Henderson’s were planning to drive to Alaska. Ken was a bit concerned about messing up the “new” motorhome on the trip scheduled for 1998. Elaine and their daughter took advantage of an opportunity to do a Caribbean cruise in April of that year. While they were gone Ken went to Atlanta to babysit the two granddaughters. It was while the girls were at school that he discovered “the internet” and came across the GMCNet that was started just a couple of months earlier. That got him interested in looking for a less expensive and smaller motorhome and he found a couple of real junkers for sale in Atlanta. They were not what he was looking for though he did find one in Texas with all the buzz words he had just learned (Alcoa, Bilstein, etc.). So, Ken arranged with the owner (who ran a helicopter repair service in Monterrey, Mexico) to see it at his daughter’s home

in Kerrville, Texas. Elaine did not want to make the trip so he hopped in his Chevy S-10 and took off alone with a cheap, A-frame tow bar in the bed. The very day he saw it in April of 1998 he hooked the S-10 to the Class 1 bumper hitch on the GMC and headed eastward for home. On May 1, four miles east of DeFuniak Springs, Florida, the 59,065-mile engine gave out. He wound up having it towed to the Panama City garage of another GMCer. Ken got into swapping engines right off the bat. Since then, he has done it five more times with the last being a Cadillac 500 with fuel injection. As Ken will tell you, he has had fun all along the way. Now, back to the Safari and the GMC. You see, Ken wanted an older and smaller unit for the Alaska trip. Ferries would allow up to 22 feet so he figured the Birchaven would pass muster. Though he planned to sell the GMC either in Alaska or shortly after their return, he did not do it until 2000. By then, of course, Ken and Elaine were into driving a smaller unit to the places they wanted to go in Florida while meeting a lot of nice GMCers in the Dixielanders, Sunshine Statesmen, and GMC Eastern States chapters. Ken and Elaine have been long-time members of GMCMI and both have served on the board. Now, about those electric wipers – their daughter and family borrowed the GMC in 2004 to go to the Oshkosh EAA Fly-in. When returning home they hit the Chicago area at rush hour when a thunderstorm hit. As many of us know, the mayhem of operating the vacuum-based wipers while trying to pass cars is an exercise in futility. (Let’s face it, you can pass or see but you can not do both.) It was while returning from the trip that their daughter notified Ken that he must do something about the wipers. About that same time, Dan Hudson was having trouble with his GMC since it kept blowing the top seals on the power steering box because of the wipers. Dan and Ken joined forces and came up with the mechanical design. By the way, Ken is a degreed electrical engineer and spent 23 years in the U.S. Air Force after spending three years in the Army National Guard and Reserve. When asked what he likes best about life, he responded with “having extended family and always having something with which to keep busy.” If you were to see his garages (yes, plural), you would understand. Exploring the

GMC Motorhome History A column by Bill Bryant, GMC Motorhome Historian, where he will share tidbits of the GMC Motorhome history with us.

First and Second GMC Motorhomes Off The Production Line Most of us who have an interest in a special vehicle would probably think the possibility of getting the “first one off the production line” as absolutely the greatest prize you could find to own! Well, listen to what we have found and the need for someone to take on the challenge of bringing this rare beast back to its original “shine”. Not only do we have the first 1973 GMC Motorhome available to the public being offered for sale, we have the second 1973 GMC Motorhome available for sale as well. I personally have NO financial interest in these two GMCs. My interest is in the history of the GMC Motorhome and would like to see these early GMCs find a new home. I am looking for that GMC Motorhome enthusiast that has the ability and resources to purchase and restore it/them to a “from the factory” condition. Background Here is the background for the first production coaches, the first twenty GMC Motorhomes built as production vehicles (TZE 063V100001 thru V100020 were used for evaluations and testing. When those requirements were completed, they were scrapped. Therefore, the first 1973 production GMC Motorhome sold to the public was TZE063V100021 and the second V100022. They were both originally painted the Bittersweet color and are both Canyon Lands models. I have the service and parts glove box stickers, so we know how they were outfitted when they left the factory.

Description of the First Production GMC Motorhome TZE063V100021 | Floor plan: 26-3 Present location: North Texas, presently in storage. Owner: Contact me for owner info. Condition: Needs complete restoration. Presently old white paint job. Pretty much complete except for interior. Needs dinette and front driver side Davo. Good tires on 16” Alloy wheels. Some spare parts.

Description of Second Production GMC Motorhome TZE063V100022 | Floor plan: 26-3 Location: Central Wisconsin, was in storage until two months ago, presently outside. Owner: Contact me for owner info. Condition: Presently a roadable coach but of course should be restored to represent its special status. Interior complete and functional presently old white paint job. Good tires on 16.5 wheels.

These coaches are owned by two separate owners that have no connection with each other. I am involved in an attempt to save these coaches for the future and find a new owner(s) who appreciate their importance, has the ability and resources to restore it/them to the original condition they deserve. If any of you know of someone who may or may not be in touch with the GMC Motorhome Community, spread the word and our need of finding someone who might accomplish this task! This is a serious effort! We need your help! This GMC Motorhome History can easily be lost, if we do not act.

MAINTENANCE, PARTS, TIPS, INNOVATIONS AND MORE

Tips on Tuning the Onan Electrical Generator Emery Stora | 1977 Kingsley | Frederick, Colorado

A good reference is the GMC Maintenance Manual X7525 for working on the Onan. There is also an excellent booklet written by the late Duane Simmons. Available at gmcmi.com/technical-presentations-papers/. Under the Onan Generator section, you will find Duane’s paper on the “Onan Control Board Operation” and “Onan 2004 Demo Pamphlet”. However, there are some things that are not in those papers or the manual that might be of interest to owners. Air Filter The Onan manufactured air filter is very expensive. You can purchase several different filters from any auto parts store. Bring your Onan filter with you. The filters of about the same size that you find will probably have both ends open but you can use a soup can end by drilling a hole in the center to go over the bolt that holds the filter. This will work just fine for the Onan. You can also buy a Briggs & Stratton filter from Lowes, Amazon, and others that will fit fine if you drill a hole in the bottom for the rod. Amazon’s is about $8.00 as of July 2019. Fuel Pump Letting the Onan sit idle for long periods allows the fuel to gunk up and form deposits inside the fuel pump. This often will not

allow the pump piston to reciprocate and you will get no fuel pumped through it. Sometimes just tapping on the side of the pump while cranking the Onan will get it started and then clean fuel running through it will dissolve any deposits. If that does not work, then you can try pouring some carb cleaner into it and let it soak a while. If that does not get it working, then it is easy to disassemble the pump (be sure to record how you took it apart to be sure to get it back together again). Snapping a picture or two with your cell phone could help. Carburetor Often poor performance is caused by an improper mixture from the carburetor. There is a needle (high speed jet) located in the side of the carb bottom. If you turn it counter clockwise it will come out so that you can examine the “O” ring that seals it to the carb base. This “O” ring wears and becomes loose which allows the jet to move and upset the air/fuel mixture. Sometimes it becomes so worn that it will suck air around the “O” ring. The original ring has a square profile but it can be replaced with a round profile ring. Use a 1/4” O.D. (outside diameter) x 1/8” I.D. (inside diameter). Just replacing this “O” ring often cures surging and poor running of the engine. Linkage Adjustment There is a linkage rod that runs from the throttle of the carb to the ball joint on the end of the governor arm. This is usually not touched by someone trying to tune up his or her Onan. For the first 20 years that I owned the GMC, my voltage from the Onan would be correctly adjusted to be about 126 volts at no load but when I put about 3,000 watts of load, the voltage would drop to 110 volts. I tried to make adjustments but could not correct the problem. (Instructions to adjust this link are in the GMC Motorhome Maintenance manual available at gmcmi. com.) I decided to check mine one day back in 2001 and I found that the rod was adjusted about 1/4” too long. I rotated the

14

GMC VINTAGE RVING MAGAZINE | GMCMI.COM

end that clips onto the ball joint on the governor arm until it fit properly. I could tell that it came from the factory 1/4” too long as it had green paint on it that had never been disturbed. Once I made it the right length, then the governor could be adjusted for smooth running. I was able to turn on the water heater, coffee pot, microwave oven, and the heat strip with 120 volts. I calculated that I was pulling about 6,000 watts on the Onan. It had never worked this well in the 20+ years that I owned the GMC. The Onan ran smoothly with no hesitation as the loads changed and no “searching” of the governor. Bridge Rectifier There is a bridge rectifier near the end of the generator part of the Onan. It can be reached from the bottom if you lay on your back under the motorhome. The original had four terminals, which clipped into a plastic connector. It is not available anymore (or is terribly expensive). A better replacement is to buy a 1,000-volt rated one. The accepted wisdom is that they will burn out if you shut off the Onan while you have a load on it such as a running air conditioner. In my case I installed an Onan switch by my dash so I can start the Onan while driving down the road. That way I can keep the roof air conditioner turned on and get cooling just by starting my Onan. I have done this many times but have not burned the bridge rectifier – perhaps because I had installed a 1,000-volt rated one when the original went bad. Some of the four terminals on the 1,000-volt bridge rectifier are at a 90-degree angle to the original ones so the plastic connector will not fit it. Some GMCers have bent the terminals with needle nose pliers but it is easy to break them off and ruin the bridge rectifier. I have found that one can drill a hole where the terminal goes into the connector and then just clip the wires through that hole onto the terminals of the bridge rectifier. This works well and you will not ruin the rectifier.

Onan Oil Leaks Emery Stora | 1977 Kingsley | Frederick, Colorado

Field Winding Wires When working on my bridge rectifier, I was connecting the wires that go to the + and – terminals when one of the wires fell off into my hand. There are two sets of male/ female spade connectors on the end of the wires going from the field windings to the bridge rectifier. These wires are located inside a 2” long section of plastic insulating tube. I plugged the wires in but they were very loose. Examination showed that the connectors were made of brass and the heat in that area had caused them to lose their tension. I tried to tighten the connectors with some pliers but they immediately cracked. I cut them off and replaced them with steel ones. I put the wires into the tubes but coated the connectors liberally with silicone dielectric grease that can be purchased from an auto parts store. This was to keep them from corroding. I restarted the Onan and found that my voltage was much higher. I adjusted the governor to give me 126 volts at no load. I found that the Onan ran much smoother. Apparently the vibration of the running Onan was causing the loose terminals in the wires to make and break contact which the new connectors cured. Electronic “Points” There are kits that replace the points with an electronic kit such as a Petronix module. This is mounted on the flywheel and delivers higher voltage to the spark plugs. The electronic module has no moving parts that wear out and no need for adjustments. The kit is available from Applied GMC and other vendors. Choke Very often the choke will not move. I found that where the choke housing mounts to the exhaust manifold the heat causes it to rust and gives a very poor electrical ground. I fixed this by soldering a 10 gauge wire to the side of the choke housing. I then put a ring connector to the other end of the wire and grounded the wire to the pull out frame of the Onan. After doing that, the choke worked properly.

The Onan often has oil leaks under the front cover by the flywheel. It is usually one or more of four things. 1. The oil filter might not be tight and leaking at its rubber seal. 2. The hanging support behind the oil filter adapter might be leaking. It has two gaskets. One on each side of the support. One is shown below. The other is on the other side of the hanging support. The support has holes in it for the passage of oil. You may have to make your own seals. Do not use cork gasket material as it will leak. Pictured right is a gasket around the oil filter. It must be used to get proper air circulation and cooling.

4. The front seal on the shaft beneath the flywheel. The original front seal is an Onan 509-0040. (The rear seal is an Onan 509-0041). The 509-0040 crosses to a National 470162R or SKF11806. Those are a single lip Viton seal. I found a double lipped seal that should be much better than the original single lip. It is made of Nitrile rubber which is better than Viton for this application. CR SKF 11801 (CR = Chicago Rawhide) got it at a local bearing supplier but it was in a Harwal seal box. Labeled as follows: 1.187 x 2.000 x .437 Type: BDL Material: NBR BDL = Double Lipped NBR = Nitrile Rubber It fits right into the opening when tapped into place. To remove the old one I used a slide puller which had a screw on the end that one normally puts into a hole in a dented piece of metal such as a fender that you are trying to straighten.

Gasket

You could also try two self-tapping metal screws and pull them out with a couple of vice grips.

Gasket

Air Seal Gasket

3. The low oil pressure switch. This can be leaking from around the switch where it is mounted into the switch base or around the threads where it screws into the block. Note that it is a tapered pipe thread. 1/8” x 27 NPT. If someone has replaced it with a switch with a non-tapered thread it can leak.

I drilled a 3/32” hole into the seal and screwed in the slide hammer. (Depending on the size screw you may need a different drill hole.) A couple of slides and the old seal pulled right out. I greased up the lips and the outer metal of the seal and then used a piece of 1 1/2” pipe (OD=1.9”) to drive in the new seal until it seated. The double lipped seal would help prevent leakage at the seal. Especially if the old single lipped seal has worn a tiny groove into the shaft.

For a discussion on the difference between a Viton seal and a Nitrile Rubber seal see: easternseals.co.uk/viton-fkm-vs-nitrile/

Some Obscure Pollution Devices Found on the Engine Source: Maintenance Manual X7525 A& B

PCV: Positive Crankcase Ventilation Please refer to the article “The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) – A Humble GMC Servant. What it does and why it is so important.” in the Spring 2019 issue of GMC Vintage Rving on page 21.

CCS: Cold Air Delivery Mode

Vapors are stored in the carbon filled canister (located low on the frame below the passenger seat area). The canister is connected by a hose to a fitting in the base of the carburetor. Full engine vacuum draws the stored vapors into the manifold below the carburetor to be burned with the fuel mixture. The canister is open at its base where a filter cleans the air being drawn into the canister by engine vacuum.

CCS: Controlled Combustion System – STD Equipment Mounted in the air cleaner housing (small hose to full manifold vacuum) and large two inch heat insulated hose connected to a stove attached to left exhaust manifold. Purpose: When underhood temp is below 79° F, the valve moves a damper to direct warm air up through the large pipe to the air cleaner. When the air “inside” the air cleaner reaches 123° F, the damper then mixes the air to maintain 123° F.

Recommended Service Interval: Replace filter every two years or 24,000 miles.

ECS: Evaporation Control System

Under full throttle (vacuum falls below seven inches) the damper closes off the hot air to allow outside cool air. Common Issues: Stove section metal, rotted offhot air pipe long gone, vacuum hose capped off at manifold port – valve remains open to cool air. Often, cool air ducted from behind radiator. ECS: Evaporation Control System Purpose: To capture fuel vapor from gas tanks and carburetor bowl preventing them from escaping into the atmosphere.

Hoses run from fuel tanks, through the fuel separator valve (in the left rear wheel well) and a vent on the carburetor to a collection canister. (California coaches specified dual canisters.)

Alternator Upgrade Jim Bounds | 1975 Transmode | Cooperative Motor Works | www.gmccoop.com

Common Issues: Filter is clogged or completely deteriorated (perhaps never replaced) or fitting under carburetor is capped off. Vapor and fuel lines “aged out”. Fuel separator valve is cracked or stuck. TVS: Thermal Vacuum Switch Purpose: To protect the engine from overheating. Retarded initial spark setting (from emissions) tends to make the motor run hotter during idle or low speed conditions. When coolant reaches 224° F the valve opens, and directs full manifold vacuum (from “ported”) to the distributor. Advancing the timing, raises the rpm and the fan speed. At 216° F, it reverts back to the retarded timing setting. Common Issues: The TVS is often found to be bypassed and timing advanced to that at 224° F above.

TVS: Thermostatic Vacuum Switch

Stage 1 Design Alternators used in our coaches were an early Delco alternator design from the days when you had to charge your car periodically because the generator would not charge at idle. Alternators will, but our early design would heat up and fail, getting too hot from low rpm high output. Stage 2 Design The alternator casing update featured a heavier diode pack. That allowed a soft charge at low rpm to help with the overheating. This feature ramps up the alternator output as the engine rpm goes up.

This update also featured a “selfexciting” module. That allows elimination of the external nichrome wire circuit which we have found to cause melting of the wire harnesses.

You can update your coach with this second design. You will need to take your GMC alternator into an alternator rebuild shop and ask them to upgrade it from a Stage 1 Delco M7157 to a Second Design Stage 2 one wire self-exciting alternator. If you decide to do this, below is the simple modification needed for your battery isolator circuit to convert to the “one-wire alternator”. Technology has solved one of the problems many of us are plagued with. If you have any questions on this upgrade, feel free to give me a call.
