Kindall Stephens Peter Zumthor said, “I am convinced that a good building must be capable of absorbing the traces of human life and taking on a specific richness... I think of the patina of age on materials, of innumerable small scratches on surfaces, of varnish that has grown dull and brittle, and of edges polished by use. I hope the buildings I design absorb life as well because I see the activities and life that are served by buildings as the true reason for creating.

The reuse project in downtown Austin is a historic home to be redeveloped as an event space. Historically the building has been a home, law offices and, apartments. Maintenance of the historic character challenges the needs of new program type that call for ADA accessibility and an open floor plan for weddings and events alike. The interior wood paneling and multi-story chimney structures are key considerations during development.

The private residence in the small town of Quihi, Texas outside of San Antonio openly connects the master bedroom and public area to create a cohesive living space. Views to the tree filled site further extend the space and are emphasized by the extended lines of the thick concrete walls.

PHYSICAL WORK
THE BOX PROJECT introduction to craft
By being just a box, ready to hold anything, the design had more freedom for exploring personal interests. I focused my attention on clean joint connections inspired by our joinery studies during the semester. The tabbed connection was inspired by the dovetail joint study and the hidden spline came from the mider and spline study.
project location: Charleston, South Carolina tools used: joiner, planar, band saw, mider saw, table saw, drill press, table router, orbital sander, chisel, Japanese hand saw
PHYSICAL WORK
VISUALIZATION FOLIO compiled works
Drawings are done in many formats to explore the various techniques that can be used in an evolving approach to understanding site. Each sub folder is organized based on the length of study varying from hours to weeks. Taking the time to look at spaces, sketch, infer, research and generate ways to depict a story helped in learning how to experience space. Lessons focused on in the “look | sketch | infer | research stage included: impression mattering as much technical finesse, taking a slow close look at the space helps you feel it, and buildings speaking of their history. The multifaceted analysis stage led to hybrid drawings exercises forcing me to question how to demonstrate the story of a space most clearly without losing depth. These representations were done both with in class sessions and hybrid drawing projects. It was my biggest struggle to decide on a strong single thought to portray about the spaces. The forced distillation of ideas helped bring strength to the fresh iterations.
project location: Charleston, South Carolina media: graphite (all sketches), markers (analytical sketching), watercolors, photographs, digital drawings

CASA PLAYHOUSE

design build playhouse
As a team of two architecture students and two construction management students, we were able emulate experiences in the construction industry. By working on the design together we discussed the feasibility of different design capabilities and pushed the envelope to maximize the fun. We built a steel frame and created all of the wood faces of the playhouse to be used as climbing surfaces. Adding color was an intrigue of the team to play up the whimsy of the ladder tunnel. We wanted entire project to visually and physically engage kids and were happy to see it at the final review with kids all over it.

LOCAL WORK
INDIGO PINE United States Department of Energy Solar Decathlon home competition The Indigo Pine home was the competition submission for the Clemson University 2015 team. The team worked to produce a home that changes the way wood construction is viewed while increasing the safety of job sites. These goals were achieved by creating a wood structural system which relies on steel zip ties and CNC manufactured plywood wall cavities with natural connections. My contributions included: awarded grants, accepted conference submissions including PLEA (pictured to right), exhibit marketing materials, and construction research.

GREEN FOREST PARK park + trail revitalization
The Green Forest Park renovation and addition functions within the Nicholtown community of Greenville, South Carolina along the Swamp Rabbit Trail. Supporting the existing community efforts, the goal of the project is to create spaces for congregation and community. This intention pushed the development of a project series including pavilions, trail activities, public restrooms, sport court, and a large public gathering space.
project location: Greenville, South Carolina with partner Spencer Hutchinson role: conceptual and programmatic development, time-line, renderings, plans and some project detailing
