The Old Lady and the Purple Dragon by Julie Ford

“The INDIGO GIRLS in GVL” The INDIGO GIRLS… with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra…at the Curtis M. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts on the spring-bright campus of the University of Florida in beautiful Gainesville… on a sunny Sunday afternoon. The Old Lady was in heaven. “Secure yourself to heaven. Hold on tight, the night has come. Fasten up your earthly burdens, You have just begun.”1 The musical talents and distinctive voices of Amy Ray and Emily Saliers shone like diamonds with the Symphony as the golden setting behind them, gleaming gems throwing rainbows of light on love and pain. “Laughing in a crown of jewels, Numbness from a scepter's wound. Toss and Turn, I spin and learn, ‘Catch yourself before you burn.’"1

The announcer said: “Photography is strictly prohibited during the performance.” So, this photo was taken between songs.

The Old Lady last heard the Indigo Girls live more than a decade ago, during a time when she thought that she had love and life figured out. “Pain from pearls-hey little girlHow much have you grown? Pain from pearls-hey little girlFlowers for the ones you've known.”1 The Old Lady wept in both sadness and gratitude for the years and lessons learned since that time. She was much older then; she’s younger than that now. Important LGBT Dates May 17: International Day Against Homophobia & Transphobia The International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT) aims to coordinate international events to call respect for lesbians and gays world-wide. May 17 was chosen as the day of the event because homosexuality was removed from the International Classification of Diseases of the World Health Organization (WHO) on May 17, 1992.

May 22: Harvey Milk Day Harvey Milk Day is celebrated globally each year on May 22 in memory of Harvey Milk, a gay rights activist assassinated in 1978. In California, Harvey Milk Day is recognized as a legal state holiday. The holiday was established by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2009 following the success of the award-winning feature film “Milk” retracing Milk's life.

Home Van Pet Care Project News SEVEN YEARS AND NINE LIVES Home Van Pet Care Project celebrated its Seventh Birthday in April. With a lot of help from our friends and supporters we are able to carry out our primary mission, to feed the pets of homeless and low income people in our community. Because you are generous we can often do more.

kitties … or even the shy one who would want to hide for a long time. If you have ideas, suggestions or possible solutions please call Elizabeth Howard at 352-473-9423 right away. We have two special projects that continue:

We started with the Tent City Tribe of Cats. We took them out of Tent City a couple years ago and they now live in a rural area and they are BIG.

We have other cat news and it is somber. WE HAVE TWO WEEKS TO REMOVE A SMALL CAT COLONY FROM THE PREMISES WHERE THEY HAVE LIVED FOR OVER A YEAR. WE NEED A PLACE OR PLACES TO TAKE THEM. A year or so ago we began to supply food to a homeless woman who was sent to us by Operation Catnip. We will call her MD. A mother cat and kittens had come to MD in her very minimal shelter. We began to help her with food and also helped with the spay/neuter. MD has been entirely faithful for a year in feeding these cats on a daily basis even though it has been arduous for her at times.

One is the dog houses, and so far we have delivered four of those. The dogs love them and we will send some photos with news soon. The other ongoing project is County licenses for dogs that we obtain after they have their rabies shots and are spayed. These are $20 if you would like to contribute.

Home Van Pet Care Project needs canned cat food (“fishy” types), bags of dog food and cat food. Please call for current needs if you can donate food. If you can contribute financially, please send checks made to Home Van Pet Care Project, Inc.,c/o Elizabeth Howard, P.O. Box 14305, Gainesville FL 32604 or PayPal at our blog, www.homevanpetcareproject.blogspot.com. For more info, call Elizabeth Howard at 352-473-9423 or email holisticliz@hotmail.com.

A neighbor nearby the little colony became angry lately and although she had been kind to the cats in the past she now wants them out. We have two weeks to relocate these beautiful year old cats. As you may know, relocation of colonies is difficult. MD needs a home herself. She has nothing, is medically disabled and is waiting for disability. It is hard to know how to ask you to help. Perhaps you have that ideal “barn cat” situation or maybe you could adopt one or two of the more tame Kindred Sisters — May 2014

In the Spotlight P. L. Travers Pamela Lyndon Travers (1899-1996), born Helen Lyndon Goff, was an Australian-British novelist, actress and journalist. Published in London in 1934, Mary Poppins was Travers' first literary success. Sequels followed (the last in 1988). Though Travers had numerous fleeting relationships with men throughout her life, she lived for more than a decade with Madge Burnand. They shared a London flat from 1927 to 1934, then moved to a thatched cottage in Sussex, where Travers published the first of the Mary Poppins books; while on holiday in Italy, Burnand photographed Travers topless on the beach. Their friendship, in the words of one biographer, was “intense,” but also equally ambiguous. excerpt from www.en.wikipedia.org

Misogyny MISOGYNY: hatred of women by men MISOGYNIST: a man who hates women Anti-feminist, male chauvinist pig, sexist This is an ancient system, pervasive, infecting every system worldwide, AND YET here came a FEMINIST MOVEMENT to fight the constant put down to keep women in their place, which is UNDER THE BOOT OF THE BULLY. I remember reading Alice Walker about genital mutilation and I couldn’t stomach it. My mind rejected the REALITY of it. I was an American twentieth century woman, and did not have to deal with it anywhere near me. Cruelty to BLACKS in the SOUTH where I lived, was extreme, KKK was/is rampant, if you knew where to look. In Florida, I was admiring a handsome barn with my artist eye, as a wonderful water color subject. My friend explained that it could well be an armory for the local chapter. Whoa. I had to let that settle down before I could listen to the truth. In the south, rich white gentlemen, followed by rich white ladies, followed by rich white children, followed by black men, still enslaved economically by the JIM CROW SYSTEM and the elaborate laws enforcing their place at the bottom. ENFRANCHISEMENT had not broken chains, government was NOT part of their reality. SO WE PAID LITTLE ATTENTION to a little thing like misogny. WE PAID LITTLE ATTENTION to other than SURVIVING. So, a few survivors later, specifically my momma, here I am reading Alice Walker who was roughly my contemporary as a southern woman, and had the guts to look at what was being done to women in Africa, and tell us about it. THERE THE MATTER would rest until my LESBIAN FEMINIST CONSCIOUSNESS was able to accept it on an intellectual level. Never mind a physical reality check. Empathy for my sisters came with age and maturity. And sobriety gave me back FEELINGS. Tuesday - Friday: 12pm - 7pm That means the GOOD ones and the BAD ones. Mostly I am blessed with good stuff, and will try Saturday: 10am - 6pm to look for the bright side of the situation, but this week I have some sad stuff to process, and so Sunday - Monday: Closed here I am, back to my journal to bitch and moan, lick my wounds and then GO FORTH with my truth to speak truth to power. OUR ANCIENT 22 SE 5th Ave, Suite D ENEMY MISOGNY can be said still to reign Gainesville, FL 32601 most of the world, but I join my sisters of radical 352.375.7477 feminism to speak out, sing out, and take power in these not so small actions.

Women's Sunday Movie Third Sunday of each month at 4:00pm!

May 18: “Without Men” Without Men is a comedy about the women of a small and remote Latin American mountain village that’s forever altered the day all of its men are recruited to go fight in the country’s civil war. Left to fend for themselves, the women of the town, led by Rosalba, slowly emerge from their supporting roles as wives and daughters to become unwitting founders of a remarkable new society: an all female utopia. When the men return to try to reclaim their power, a clash of sexes ensues with unsuspected consequences. Pride Center, 3131 NW 13th St, Gainesville. www.gainesvillepride.org
