What’s been happening at Kinesiology Schools Australia? Hyperton—X Advanced Course The weekend of May 18-21 2012 was the weekend I qualified as a teacher of Hyperton-X Advanced. Leading up to it I must say I was quite nervous. Although I have 17 years experience in Kinesiology and I use HT-X pretty much every day I’m in clinic, if not every day, I felt the pressure was on a little. Had to step out of my comfort zone and teach something new. To make it more stressful I had to teach in front of one of my mentors, Trevor Savage, the person who taught me HT-X and HT-X Advanced 16 years ago. Well, once I started teaching I relaxed and found it a breath of fresh air. It was only when I started teaching that I realised how much of this I use in the clinic and how often. It is actually a huge part of my structural work and I use it daily. I use it by itself and also within the PKP protocol, ST#7½b. Hyperton-X teaches people about the spine and how it actually works in a holistic manner, how to get the best results with stretching and flexibility, how to work on your self and how to use this simple advanced stretching technique to help people with a whole heap of problems like learning difficulties and sensitivities etc. The Hyperton-X Advanced course takes things further again based on the simple Hyperton-X methods the students learnt many more muscles they can quickly

release and how to do many bi-laterally (both at the same time). More importantly it is a very effective method of how to reduce pain in and around joints. There are also some other pretty handy techniques in there. I just wanted to say Thank-You to the students who attended. It was a privilege to teach you and the feedback was fantastic. One lady from Victoria who studied her Diploma through another college said she learnt more things in these 4 days that she can integrate into her clinic than she did in the whole of her Diploma. Goes to show how much is in this short course. I’d love to see you all in HT-X and HT-X Advanced next time we run it. HT-X requires no previous Kinesiology experience but takes you a long way in your learning. Even Physios I know have been blown away by it.

How’s your Immune System? NOW is the time to make sure you’re prepared for Winter! With the cold weather now upon us, how are you making sure that your body can fight off all of those nasty bacteria and viruses just waiting to take you over and leaving you in a blithering, snotty heap on the couch watching Judge Judy and re-runs of MacGyver? There are some very simple things you can do to make sure your body is strong enough to win the battle, who needs Judge Judy when you can be living your own life vibrantly!

What is the Immune System? The immune / lymphatic system consists of tissues and cells that protect the body against attack from foreign invaders. It is comprised of:       

White blood cells The tonsils The thymus gland The liver and spleen The lymphatic system The bone marrow The mucous membranes in the gut and respiratory tract.

Exercise: Yes, I know but it’s cold outside and it’s hard to get motivated, BUT keeping moving as it is

critical to your immune function. Your lymphatic system is one of your main lines of defence and contains a fluid called lymph fluid and lymph nodes which are the main processing area of the lymphatic system (think about how your glands swell in your neck under your chin when you aren’t feeling so well!). The lymph fluid in your body contains white bloods cells and transports bacteria from the cells and organs of your body to lymph nodes where the bacteria is destroyed. So the question is, how does the lymph move through the body? MOVEMENT! Lymph is moved through the body by the contraction of muscle! So when it gets cold outside KEEP MOVING so that you can keep those harmful bacteria out of body!

Garlic: Studies show that garlic contains allicin, a compound with a natural antibiotic-like effect. It is antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic, and antiviral, but it must be consumed raw to have this effect. Garlic is a true SUPERFOOD, it has also been shown to reduce cholesterol and triglycerides, cancer, heavy-metal intoxication, infectious diseases, hypertension, free-radical damage, and immune deficiency states (Abdullah et al, 1988).

Vitamin C: Vitamin C is said to increase the production of white blood cells and antibodies and helps your body to absorb Iron. Vitamin C is essential for healthy function of the body, but we cannot store it, so we need to ensure that we eat foods that contain Vitamin C in our diet 4

every day! Some foods that contain Vitamin C are, Red Capsicum, Strawberries, Oranges, Brussels Sprouts, Broccoli, Grapefruit, Cantaloupe, Dark Leafy Greens, Paw Paw, Cabbage and Tomatoes. You can also supplement your diet with vitamin C Supplements! We stock GNLD Vitasquares which are especially for children!

Flavanoids: Flavanoids work with Vitamin C to protect cells in body fluids like the blood and lymph. Each enhances the absorption and action of the other. Flavanoids improve your immune function, as well as reducing the risk of heart disease, antiinflammatory action and protects from free radicals. Flavanoids are the main reason we hear every now and then that told wine and chocolate could actually be good for us! Flavanoids are found in blue, purple and magenta foods like onion, beetroot, lettuce, berries, cabbage, kale, spinach, asparagus, kidney beans and many more green vegetables and beans, Dill, Thyme, Tea (Green & Black) and red wine.

Winter Immunity Juices! Got a juicer that you never use? Well before you reach for the supplements or the cold and flu tablets dust of your juicer and get some raw living nutrients into you!

Evelin’s Immune Builder 1 handful watercress 1 turnip, scrubbed, tops removed, ends trimmed 3 carrots, scrubbed well, tops removed, ends trimmed 1 – 2 garlic cloves ½ green apple such as Granny Smith 1 lemon, peeled Bunch up watercress. Cut produce to fit your juicer’s feed tube. Tuck the watercress in feed tube and push through with the turnip. Finish with remaining ingredients. Stir the juice, pour into a glass, and drink as soon as possible. Serves 1 Source: The Juice Lady’s Turbo Diet by Cherie Calbom

Carotenoids:

The Hulk

Carotenoids are naturally occurring in all coloured vegetables, and improve our immune function. They have been linked to oxidation-preventing mechanisms and are therefore efficient free-radical scavengers.

Does this all sound a bit too confusing? If you want to be as healthy and vibrant as MacGyver make sure that you excerise regularly and have a diet full of colourful fruit and vegtables! It’s as simple as that! If that all gets too hard sometimes and you start to feel a bit run down, increase your intake of Garlic and Fruit and Vegetables! We’ve even given you some fantastic Juice recipes to try!

2 cups orange juice ½ cup pecans 2 Tbsp Wheat grass juice 2 Tbsp Sesame Seeds 1 tsp Flaxseed Oil Make this drink whenever you feel weak, fatigued or overwhelmed. Source: Don Tolman

Immune Booster Juice 1 stick celery 1 ripe tomato 1 pear ½ beetroot 1 carrot 2 dandeliion leaves or cabbage leaves ½ cm slice fresh ginger root 1 clove garlic (optional) ½ red onion 1 slice of fresh pineapple Source: Dr Sandra Cabot

Principle #3: Sunshine THE SUN: Friend or Foe? Our bodies, like plants and other living organisms on this earth, require sunshine to grow, develop, repair and regenerate. Without natural sunlight we are far more susceptible to cancer, depression, obesity, osteoporosis and many other diseases so I find the debates about how the sun is dangerous and is killing us a little ignorant and mis informed. By allowing our skin and body to receive the light from the sun, our skin creates a photo-electric response so that our body can make Vitamin D. This vitamin helps the entire bone structure of the body, the circulatory system, maintains normal heart rhythm and helps every cell in the body regulate its function better. The UV rays that create vitamin D in our body also help to control bacterial and viral overwhelm. The problem with most people today is that they are mal-illuminated. We are indoors in our office all day and by the time we walk out it is dark. The media and western medicine tell us to coat ourselves with sunscreen when we do go outside (which contain toxic chemicals that put even more stress on system) and for four weeks of the year during our annual leave we take a holiday and burn ourselves to a crisp. So how can we get adequate sunshine and thus the vitally important vitamin D? 

People who have nutritional deficiencies caused by consuming soft drinks, processed foods, white flour and refined sugars are more susceptible to sunburns so clean up your diet.

Expose at least 70 -80% of your body to the sun for 20 - 30 minutes every day that you can (without using chemical sun screen) Even better, grab a water bottle, go for a walk and breath in some fresh air.

6

Remember the hours before 11am and after 2pm are usually less intense

heat and will ensure the best and healthiest results in a 20 - 30 minute period. 

Don’t always wear sunglasses. The eyes are the gateway to telling your body when it is day and night. They also tell the body to produce more melatonin which helps protect the skin from burning. You are more likely to get burnt wearing sunglasses than not.

As with all the principles of health that have been mentioned in the past months. Everything in moderation! Get some sun daily, put a hat on and cover up if you are going to be out in the sun during the hotter parts of the day. Drink lots of water. Eat fresh fruit and veggies and be grateful for the day. Cheers

“Dear Danny, I have a client coming to see me that has sleep apnea and she said she is not on a breathing machine, does anyone have any experience or advice they can offer in this area? Sharon”

“Dear Sharon, Keep in mind that sleep apnea is just one symptom, or piece of the puzzle. Keep your eye on the big picture. A good history and some detective work can help you heaps. Then follow the protocol. One thing to look at is how they breathe. Are they a mouth breather? If so, then they need to take their tongue to the gym. Interesting visual but the tongue should be up on the hard pallet just behind the ridge behind the front teeth. When the tongue is in this position then it opens some reflexes in the nasal passages and allows the nostrils to open more and allow air into the previously blocked nose. It also makes it harder for them to breathe through the mouth also encouraging nose breathing. Nose breathing encourages more blood to the brain as well. Get the person to practice holding the tongue in this position and holding their lips together. In time the tongue and lip muscles will start to do it automatically and improve both day and night breathing. This will help with many people that have sleep apnea. Through Kinesiology you can do some focused balances around visualising the tongue up the top of the mouth etc. Also test foods that clog up the nose such as dairy, wheat, bananas, other allergens and mucous producing foods as taught in BKP108 in the Cert IV and allergies in ECO202. You can also balance the tongue, throat, laryngeal and neck muscles as learnt in MST301.

Each month we are going to take a look the 14 Meridians with some useful information to take an use in your Kinesiology Practice. The first meridian we are going to look at more closely is the….

The Heart Meridian Muscles

The Heart Organ

These muscles are on the Heart Meridian and relate to The heart is the key organ in the circulatory system. As a hollow, muscular pump, its main function is to propel blood the Heart Meridian energy and the function of the Heart. Use these muscles as pre-tests. throughout the body. It usually beats from 60 to 100 times per minute, but can go much faster when necessary. It beats  Subscapularis about 100, 000 times a day, more than 30 million times per  Subclavius year.  Extensor Pollicis Longus The heart has four chambers that are enclosed by thick, muscular walls. It lies between the lungs and just to the left  Omohyoid of the middle of the chest cavity. The right and left atria receive the blood entering the heart. Heart Goals Use these statements as goals to base a balance around, or an affirmation. 

My heart functions at optimum levels

My heart beats to a regular rhythm

My atriums function at optimum levels

My ventricles function at optimum levels

All parts of my heart are balanced and functioning at 100%

Ref: Pam Myers and Sally Worth, Rekindled Ancient Wisdom 10

The heart does not ‘attack’ us. We get so caught up in the soap opera and dramas we create that we often forget to notice the little joys that surround us. We spend years squeezing all the joy out of the heart and it literally falls over in pain. Heart attack people are never joyous people. If they do not take the time to appreciate the joys of life, they will just recreate another heart attack in time.

Use these Affirmations with your clients! My heart beats to the rhythm of love. Joy. Joy. Joy. I lovingly allow joy to flow through my mind and body and experience. I bring joy back to the centre of my heart. I express love to all. Reference: Louise L. Hay, You Can Heal Your Life Anatomy of the Heart

Meridian The heart meridian involves the cycling of the blood as well as electrical communication with the rest of the cells of the whole Soul. The heart is in constant communication with all of the organs and muscles to determine their blood/oxygen needs from moment to moment. The heart generates 5000 times more powerful electrical messages throughout the Soul than the brain. In the Chinese belief system, the heart is also strongly associated with mental processes, while in the West we have the traditional metaphor of the heart as an emotional centre and a centre of wisdom.

The Fire Element The Heart meridian is in the Fire Element. The Fire Element can be represented by the image of the hot, red sun, giving both light and warmth. It is associated with all of life’s heat and passions, particularly with enthusiasm, vitality and “warm feelings.” The Wood Element provides the fuel for Fire and the Earth Element is formed from the ashes generated by Fire. The Metal Element is controlled by the intense heat of Fire which melts, purifies and transforms Metal by forging it into a new and study shape. Water controls Fire by tempering or quenching it.

Element Metaphor: Fire Do you have “fire in the belly”, “passion and energy for life?” Are you too passionate, burning up your energy stores, burning those around you or are you too cold and unable to be passionate? When you think of fire, what image comes to mind and what might this symbolize in your life John and Matthew Thie, Touch For Health, A practical Guide to Natural Health with Acupressure Touch. 11
