PLANT

and KEEP planting

He presented another parable to them: “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while people were sleeping, his enemy came, sowed weeds among the wheat, and left.” “An enemy has done this!” (Matthew 13:24-25, 28)

I

have never had a green thumb. Those of you who do, I greatly admire you because you can make just about anything grow, whether it be vegetables or flowers. My Mother had a green thumb. She could extract a piece of a large plant, re-pot it, and make it grow just as strong and healthy as the one she cut it from. Although I picked up many wonderful traits from my Mother, that just wasn’t one of them. She was very good at it. The one plant I attempted to re-pot died, so I never mustered up the courage to try again. If I want to re-pot something I’ll take it to someone who knows what they’re doing, and then I’ll follow up with proper watering and care!

For business and ministry reasons I use various social media outlets. Very often I post something to train and uplift worship leaders, and encourage others in the areas of leadership, purpose, and effective communication. Well, recently I woke up very early to the news that my Facebook account had been hacked. Someone with nothing better to do had posted an extremely offensive video, and tagged just about everybody in my contacts. The situation was corrected, but I saw that as a very clear attack from our enemy, the devil himself. I don’t know whether you have experienced a social media or other cyber hack of your information, but perhaps you

can relate to a hack on your marriage, children, ministry, finances, your dream, or any number of other possibilities – you fill in the blank. In the above parable, Jesus tells the story of a farmer who had planted good seed, but an enemy came along and planted weeds among the wheat. I like to call these “interruptions,” or “distractions.” Jesus taught that the enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). These type interruptions (weeds) are intended to discourage and take your focus off of God. But you can’t allow these weeds to taint your spiritual vision.

Being on the front line in God’s army makes us all targets for enemy attack. How do you NOT fall prey to the weeds? I have a few suggestions: First and foremost, stay in the Word of God. Make sure that as you get into the Word that the Word is getting in you! Second, keep planting, serving, and seeking. I can witness to the fact that God will give you direction and encourage you along the way. Third, preacher, pastor, ministry leader, child of God, resist the temptation to allow weeds to contaminate your service. When you serve God and His people with a pure heart, just expect the enemy to raise his head in your direction. But this is why you want to be firmly rooted and grounded in the Word of God. In First Corinthians 15:58 Paul told us to be steadfast. In the Greek the word steadfast is hedraios, which means, firm in purpose, or securely positioned; not moving off course. I heard

Pastor Sharina George say, “God will never allow your seed to go unfertilized.” That’s good news for somebody because it reassures you to stay on your kingdom assignment, and keep planting.

The Enemy of a Healthy Marriage How does your garden grow? You remember the old Nursery Rhyme that captured many youthful hearts? It begged the question. How does your garden grow? Allow me creative license to pose that same question to you. How does YOUR garden grow? Are you finding yourself looking at your marriage in the light of another couple’s marriage? It is easy for us to look at the beauty of marriage through the lens of our own desires, wants and needs. However, we don’t know the brand of fertilizer (The fights and bad days), the conditions of the soil (The storms and struggles that couple had to endure), nor the care (lessons learned, forgiveness and healing) it took to nurture and groom the beauty of another person’s marriage. The other method of comparison is comparing your spouse to an unmarried person or an ex. Recently, I was discussing comparing exes to life in marriage with a colleague of mine. We were discussing the differences of the reasons exes are exes and the reason spouses are spouses. It was determined that exes are all of the errors of immaturity and stubbornness and refusal to accept the challenge to grow together through the trials. Simply put your ex is just that a disqualified person based on experience that brought pain, discomfort or dissatisfaction in some way shape or form. It is dangerous to compare your spouse to your past negative or last experience with someone that didn’t make the cut. The temptation to compare in these scenarios is alluring especially when marriage is not spiking to your “love thermometer”. But I assure you, comparison

only highlights the good and the possibilities that those good qualities may bring. It will always negate the struggles of those past experiences. It will always highlight the ‘what if we could be happy’ while negating that the person(s) of interest have ‘qualities and characteristics that could bring more harm than good to you’. The main objective of these forms of comparison is to distract you from tending to your own garden. It is easier to abandon what you feel may not be pleasing or working for you rather than to pluck up (address) the weeds (fleshly desires and instant gratification). But if you reject your garden now, the weeds will wreak havoc all over your garden (marriage). You will forfeit the harvest (healing, peace, love, restoration, forgiveness, intimacy, trust, growth, bond, etc.,) that comes when you work to restore the land. It is comparison that kills the

hope of a healthy future. Don’t assist death by comparing your living marriage to your dead end past or your fantasy of this will be better instantly if I go over here. Just remember, even a flawed diamond looks good and glimmers from afar. But the flaws are still there and they decrease the value of gemstone. So now that we know the dangers of comparison let’s explore how to put an abrupt end to it when it rears its ugly head. First, notice the way you treat your spouse when you start to compare your marriage or them to another marriage or spouse. Is it the same as when you tended to your garden? If not, you are rapidly approaching the danger zone. Secondly, before you start to compare address the concerns with your spouse. Remember they don’t know what you need until you express it. This may mean you have to seek out therapy or wise counsel, together. Lastly, work on increasing awareness of what your spouse is doing right. Too often we focus on the negative and then look for a way out. If you speak well of the things that your spouse does right, then you will build them up, they will continue to grow and give you more of the positives you need from the marriage. It isn’t always easy but it is always worth it to tend to your garden. That’s how your garden grows! Grow.Love.Learn.

THE LOVE TEST THE LOVE TEST

Alia Worthy

This week I’ve found myself intentionally thinking about love. I know some may be wondering, what does love really have to do with it? Honestly, love has everything to do with it. Love tends to be a major component in any relationship or friendship. I’ve found myself examining where do I fit on this spectrum of love and in my relationship with God and others. In Revelations 2:4, Christ is going throughout each church and is sharing his thoughts pertaining to that Church. He tells the Church of Ephesus, all these great things that they have done, then shares, “But I have this complaint against you. You don’t love me or each other as you did at first! Look how far you have fallen! Turn back to me and do the works you did at first. If you don’t repent, I will come and remove your lampstand from its place among the churches. “ Wow! I’ve realized how easy it has become to get so caught up in ourselves that we forsake Christ and even others by not loving them? Our relationship with others really show the areas that we need to work on regarding love. Love isn’t merely based on feelings, but it requires selfless actions. Christ tells the church to do what they first did when they first came to know him which requires actions and intentionality. Relationships requires work and a daily commitment to love others as ourselves. In order to effectively grow in our love for others, we must be willing to really identify if we’ve received Christ’s love and ultimately if we have a relationship with Him. It’s impossible to really share Christ’s love to the fullest extend if we have yet to experience it ourselves. To know love is to know Christ. 1 Corinthians 13: 4-7 shares the characteristics of love. Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is

Investing In You Millionaire financial advisor Todd Tresidder stated “Those with credit card debt and too many bills are more committed to their lifestyle rather than building wealth”

If you have been avidly working through the principles of Financial Fitness – by Chris Brady and Orrin Woodward then you can joyfully say “Not me!” If you are not there yet and still in some hot water or consumer debt, now is the time to think back to some of the principles about investing in yourself first. Don’t forget that this means not only putting aside a small portion of your paycheck before you spend it on bills but it also means to invest in your brain as well as the pocketbook. As you are thinking about starting a business or possibly working a direct sales business on the side (as we talked about in July and August), now is the time to get to the Library and do some reading. One of the greatest business books is The E-Myth by Michael Gruber and Cash Flow Quadrant by Robert Kiyosaki. Allow those books to permeate your understanding that there are two types of spending. One is productive spending (investing) where we know our money is designed to bring a greater return. The second is wasteful or consumption spending, where the money is gone forever. Some consumption is unavoidable. We do need to eat and last time I checked, it was not appropriate to wander in public with no clothing. But much of the consumption I am talking about here includes the things we could manage to do without like manicures, fancy hair salons, attending sporting events, expensive hobbies, cable or satellite, that extra pop from the vending machine day after day. You get the picture.

urself

Habit, momentum and the multiplier effect can work both ways. Your bad spending habits, momentum of the mounting debt and the multiplying effect of credit card interest can be reversed by education, leadership abilities, knowing your strengths and gaining some financial wisdom. It is time to attend a leadership seminar, read a book about investing, ask your mentor what she is reading these days, and turn off the TV. One of the best moments of my life was about four years ago when I began attending monthly seminars with a leadership group I am involved in. The seminars had a similar format each month in that the speaker or speakers would always have a dream, then a huge struggle and ultimately a victory. These stories gave me so much hope. They were just like me, ordinary folk but with extraordinary results. It reminds me of John 16:33 “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world, you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” I am striving to “overcome” and attain fantastic results. Are you? Please consider contacting me for a seminar schedule, or to order your Green Box that will guide you through fantastic results for financial fitness. Leslie ironleslie11@gmail.com or 440-591-8750

RECOGNIZING Signs of Suicide Evangelist Carmella Hill, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor with supervising credentials (P.C.C.-S). & Founder of Empower to H.O.P.E. Services, LLC.

S

uicide – the “ugly” and “taboo” word that many do not want to discuss. It’s a topic that has become more and more to the forefront as knowledge about celebrities/famous people who completed suicide is known. Many questions are raised about why would someone want to complete suicide? What causes someone to feel suicidal? Can I help stop someone from completing suicide when the person has made up their mind? Let’s explore the topic. UNDERSTANDING SUICIDE & THE MIND The saying “A mind is a terrible thing to waste” speaks to the idea that the mind is a vital component to our well-being. The mind can be both a help and a hindrance. Hence, the scriptures are clear in Romans chapter 12 verse 1 and 2, it encourages us to be transformed and renewed in our minds. Otherwise, we risk conforming to ideal and beliefs that will only damage us. Our minds can be triggered by the past and result in unwanted feelings and reactions. A common misconception about suicide is that everyone who expresses suicidal thoughts wants to complete suicide. This is not quite accurate. There are a range of thoughts and actions related to suicide that should be understood. Suicidal Ideation: This involves having ideas about death or dying, wish-

ing they were dead or ideas about dying by suicide. Suicidal intent: This involves having ideas of dying by suicide that are better formed and more consistently held than a suicidal ideation. Suicidal plan: This involves having a clear plan on how the act of suicide will occur.

The combination of these increases the risk of immediate harm and danger to oneself. At this point, there is no negotiation, immediate intervention is needed. “Suicidal behavior is complex and there is no single cause (www.nimh.nih.gov).

Some Risk Factors

*Depression, other mental disorders, or substance abuse disorder *A prior suicide attempt *Family history of a mental disorder, substance abuse, and suicide *Family violence, including physical or sexual abuse *Having guns or other firearms in the home

Some Warning Signs

*Hopelessness, rage, anger* *Feeling trapped (like there is no way out) *Increasing alcohol or drug use *Withdrawing from family friends/family/society *Agitation or intense anxiety, dramatic mood changes

Helpful interventions

Calling 911 or going to the nearest emergency room to be assessed by a mental health professional is a good first step. Another idea is to contact a mental health agency to discuss treatment options. There are crisis lines available as well. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 1.800.273.TALK (8255). A crisis text line is 741741 to interact with a crisis worker 24 hours, 7 days a week. There is help!

Mental Health Tips:

Actively listening! A tremendous help is actively listening to someone to better understand his/her thoughts and feelings. Stay in touch! Follow up with someone who has expressed suicide or attempted suicide will assist in decreasing risk.

Assist with seeking help! Sometimes a simple action of going with someone to seek help will lessen some of the stigma and fear. The conclusion of the matter Although it can be daunting to talk about the subject of suicide, it is a real issue that requires attention. Be a source of help to someone who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts. You can help save a life! SELAH

The Bread of Life

I

Brianna Triplett

love to go on light hikes. The sound of branches cracking beneath my feet, the warmth of the sun shining down on my face, the sweet pain in my calves from walking uphill, walking downhill, maneuvering through dirt, rocks, and streams of water, to get to my favorite final destination on any hike, a waterfall, the satisfying feeling of standing before something so powerful yet so calming and beautiful and being in awe. One thing that I would never think to do before any journey no matter how big or small is forget to eat something, or stay

hydrated. Staying hydrated is essential in everyday life and especially before any journey. Symptoms of dehydration include feelings of dizziness and lightheadedness which affects our ability to walk normally, we can become tired, and confused, our eyes may become dry as well and that affects our vision, causes it to become blurry, and hunger, can cause all of the same symptoms including irritability, anxiety, stress, and depression. Elijah a prophet had just experienced an amazing victory in the Lord at Mount Carmel against the prophets of Baal. However in 1 Kings 19:4 the Bible says after such an amazing victory “Then he went on alone into the wilderness traveling all day. He sat down… and prayed that he might die. I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life...” v. 5 “Then he lay down and slept under the broom tree. But as he was sleeping, an angel touched him and told him, “Get up and eat!” v. 6 says “He looked around and there beside his head was some bread baked on hot stones and a jar of water! So he ate and drank and lay down again.” v.7 says “Then an angel of the Lord came again and touched him and said, “Get up and eat some more, or the journey ahead will be too much for you.” v. 8 “So he got up and ate and drank, and the food gave him enough strength..”

In the same way food and water nourishes the body, God nourishes the soul, without him surely we can become tired, and confused, our vision may get blurry, we may become irritable, anxious, stressed, depressed, how many of us have ever come to a certain point in our journey where we felt like we didn’t have the strength to take another step? That’s why Jesus in John 6:35 says “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” The Psalmist King David was in the wilderness of Judah fleeing from his enemies and said in Psalm 63:1 “O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water.” He was in a desert, yet he was thirsty for God, and God alone. In v.5 David goes on to say “You satisfy me more than the richest feast...” In Matthew 4:4 when Satan was trying to tempt Jesus, Jesus told Satan, “People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” If you are thirsty and starving spiritually and emotionally I encourage you to feast on the Word of God. Jeremiah 15:16 says “When I discovered your words, I DEVOURED them. They are my joy and my heart’s delight.” The Word of God is filled with truths about who he is and who you are in him, and his promises toward his people, and it is what will give you the strength you need to carry on when the journey gets difficult so that one day you can make it to that final destination where you will experience the satisfying feeling of standing before something far greater than the waterfalls I’ve stood before, so powerful yet so calming and beautiful that you will be left in complete Triplett awe.

Minister Angela Mosely Did you know everything you consume affects your blood pressure? First, let’s define Blood Pressure. It is measured by using two numbers. The top number is called systolic it measures the pressure in your blood vessels when your heart beats. The bottom number is called diastolic and its measures the pressure in your vessels when your heart rests between beats. So if your blood pressure is too high, your heart must work much harder to maintain adequate blood flow to your entire body. 120/80 is the normal reading one should maintain. Quick question, Do you know what your blood pressure is?

Now let’s look at foods that can cause hypertension (high blood pressure). There are many foods and beverages that can prevent you from lowering your blood pressure. The biggest hidden one is salt. People with high blood pressure should limit to 1,500 mg of salt/sodium per day. The average American eats around 3,400 mg per day and that is over twice the amount one should consume. Now I want to discuss 4 foods that have a high content is salt/sodium. 1. Processed deli and lunch meats are often cured and preserved with salt. A 2-ounce serving of lunch meat can contain 500 mg of sodium or more and if you add bread, cheese, condiments your sandwich can quickly become a sodium trap. 2. All pizzas can be a poor choice. The combining of cheeses, cured meats, tomato sauce, and the crust all adds up to a lot of sodium. The most dangerous pizzas are the frozen ones. One serving of frozen pizza can contain more than 700 mg and the sodium level will climb the toppings you add. 3. Pickles can contain 390 mg of sodium. The longer vegetables sit in canning and preserving liquids, the more sodium they can soak up. 4. Canned soups can have almost 900 mg of sodium for ½ cup serving. If you eat the entire can, you’ll be taking in close to 2,000 mg of sodium so always purchase reduced-sodium soups. The best option is to keep the salt in check by making your own soup.

It’s so important to remember that eating to avoid high blood pressure isn’t about depriving yourself. It’s about changing and renewing your mindset to eat smart to keep your body in good health. Encouraging scripture: Romans 12:1-2 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world; but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” BE BLESSED!

BLOOD PRESSURE AND YOUR FOOD CHOICES

If you want to keep your blood pressure normal than just start making a few easy swaps; such as looking for reduced-sodium, no sodium, or trans-fat-free options. Another tip is to fill up your plate with at least 50 percent vegetables and fruits. This tip is not only few in calories but they provide potassium (which offsets the effects of sodium), fiber, antioxidants and a lot of beneficial nutrients.

THE POWER OF TRUE LOVE

When you give your heart and soul and the trust is broken, it’s hard trying to put the pieces together again. Once you forgive give it to God and leave it with him, knowing that HE is there for you. “Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression and the house of Jacob their sins.” Isaiah 58:1 (King James Version). This scripture speaks a huge volume and helps this article in the regards of allowing God to hear you. When people turn their heads and ears away from you and are always dismissing you, that’s the perfect time to allow them to do that. Because when you do, all that does is give you and God all the more time you need with him to make sure he hears everything you have to say!
