River Clarke P upil 2009-14
River (above) achieved excellent results in her IB exams in summer 2014 and is now studying History at the University of Bristol. “Since my first day at King Edward’s I realised this school was different, not only different, but special. King Edward’s gave me a home to grow, friends who became like family and academically supported and pushed me to be the best that I could be.The opportunities available to me at school were countless, I met some inspirational people throughout the years and the lessons I have learnt from King Edward’s are ones that I will take with me throughout my life. I think the greatest thing about King Edward’s was the belief and encouragement we got from the teachers, Unless otherwise stated, photos used in this Report do not necessarily identify bursary recipients.
and that is something that I will always appreciate”.
Peter Estlin Treasure r and Chair of Gove rnor s I write with many different hats on. I am an Old Witleian who arrived at the School in the 70s, Treasurer and Chairman of the Governing Body, and a donor and friend to King Edward’s Witley. So my relationship with the School and Bridewell runs deep. Like many of you, I came to King Edward’s thanks to financial support and, like every child, was nervous about making new friends, settling in and doing my best academically and socially. My time at Witley proved instrumental in shaping my ambitions and gave me the opportunity to get the results I needed to read Economics at Bristol University. From there, I pursued a career in finance and banking where I am now a senior finance executive at Barclays. I am aware that my career and outlook in life are due in no small part to the grounding and structure which King Edward’s gave me. So I am delighted to give something back through my work as Treasurer and Chairman of the Board of Governors, as an Old Wit and as a donor. ‘Giving’ is for me - and I suspect for many, if not all of us - a very personal decision. However it is one that gives me so much pleasure, in reading and hearing about the children whose lives we are able to help transform. Thank you for your gifts, past, present and future.

John Attwater Headmaste r What do donors mean to King Edward’s Witley? Quite simply, donors make it possible for us to fulfil our founding mission. Without you, we would not have been able to provide bursaries for over 100 children this year, fund individual music tuition for those who cannot afford it, or bring about exceptional projects around the school. These are things which cannot be done from school fee income alone.
In 2013-2014 we supported 111 pupils through the School.
Donations enable us to help many more children than our endowment funding could do alone, and to leverage additional support from charities and other partners. Without your gift, we could help fewer than a quarter of the pupils that we currently support. But more than the simple economics, philanthropy is an expression of goodwill and confidence in what we achieve at King Edward’s Witley, which is felt in the City of London, locally and internationally. I would personally like to thank you for your support to the Bridewell Foundation. We are well aware of the financial pressures on parents, donors and friends in difficult economic times, which only increases the need for the work you and we do. The Bridewell Foundation Report is our way of recognising your contribution and I hope that you enjoy reading it.

Bursaries change lives Our founding mission to help society’s neediest children get a better start in life remains as true today as it did in 1553. Recent research demonstrates and it is increasingly recognised that a boarding education provides the encouragement, routine and structure often missing at home. Each year it costs £1.5m to fund bursaries at King Edward’s which cannot be provided by our endowment alone, so philanthropic support from the City of London, City Livery Companies, charities and individual donors is vital to help as many children as we can. We are proud to report that in 2013-14 your gifts provided bursaries for 111 children. Bursaries help some children who are deemed to be ‘at risk’ by Social Services and who are in desperate need of a boarding school education. The need for bursaries does not abate and we receive many more applications than we can currently provide for, which is why we continue to seek donations to the Bridewell Foundation to help many more children. On behalf of all our pupils, thank you.
Case study 1 ‘Emily’
‘Emily’ is 13 and lives in London with her mother and younger brother. Her older brother died suddenly and unexpectedly from a heart condition a few years ago, and this caused a breakdown in her mother’s mental health. Before coming to King Edward’s, ‘Emily’ was her mother’s main carer, and sometimes carer to her younger brother. Both ‘Emily’ and her younger brother are now boarding at King Edward’s and are thriving.
Case study 2 Hannah Berry King Edward’s 2000-2006
‘My parents could never have sent me to King Edward’s without such a generous bursary. King Edward’s believed in me and made sure I got the best education I could possibly have had. I’m so grateful for everything my teachers gave to me at such a crucial period of my life. The impact of that will stay with me forever’.
7
Giving and receiving Dan Abbott Old Witleian, King Edward’s 1951-60 ‘I enjoyed my time at King Edward’s where I achieved a good educational standard, played a lot of sport and made some lifelong friends. We kept in touch with OW football and cricket, annual dinners and The OW Golf Society. In the last few years it has been possible to make a small donation towards a bursary for someone else to enjoy even better opportunities than I did and I will continue to do so whilst I can’.
Current pupil Upper Sixth 2014 ‘Being at King Edward’s has opened up a whole world of opportunities that would never have been possible at my local school in London. King Edward’s is like a family to me, like having loads of brothers and sisters. Without a bursary, my life would have been very different and I’m so grateful to have been given this opportunity and will strive to make the most of it’.

Holly Streeter P upil 1988-1995
“I had been given the Mallory Towers book-set and fantasised about having a school full of friends where I was supported and settled. I had already changed school 8 times, often attending two or more schools per year. We were at the mercy of the housing system, having been made Since leaving King Edward’s, Holly has gained a Diploma in Book-Keeping and has recently qualified as an NVQ Assessor. Holly also fundraises for the charity the RNCF, which supported her through School.
homeless when I was 4 years old. Attending King Edward’s Witley was the beginning of the future I always dreamed of. I settled in one place at school, I knew my teachers and finally I had a stable group of friends. Feeling accepted at school and gaining confidence through the support of my teachers and House parents, I flourished and, to my amazement, went on to gain a respectable clutch of qualifications. I will be forever grateful to everyone involved in supporting me through those early years.”
