Brolin Stevenson-Twontoo P upil 2007-2011
Brolin is studying International Business at the University of Plymouth and recently returned to take part in King Edward’s Telethon 2015: “I can’t thank the Bridewell Foundation enough for the time I spent at King Edward’s.The experience has definitely altered the course of my life for the better, and it is one I will continue to cherish. As a King Edward’s student I made numerous lifelong friends who not only came from diverse and global backgrounds, they also came from the student and staff bodies. King Edward’s diversity was something matched only by the numerous opportunities made available to me, opportunities which provided me with the scope to develop and explore aspects of myself I Unless otherwise stated, photos used in this Report do not necessarily identify bursary recipients. In some instances names have been changed.
had previously believed to be non-existent. I am extremely proud and honoured to call myself an Old Witleian, and I am equally respectful and grateful to the Bridewell Foundation.”
Peter Estlin Treasure r and Chair of Gove rnor s Given the unprecedented challenges young people face today, an education that provides a foundation for life is crucial. And this is even more so for young people whose personal circumstances may find them at a disadvantage at such a critical time. Providing these young people with a ‘home’ and thus enabling them to make the most of this valuable period is something we can do. As someone who was fortunate enough to come to King Edward’s when my mother became very ill, I know how much this helped me and I now know that this was only possible thanks to generous financial support from others.
We remain true to our founding mission and committed to ensuring that generations of pupils enjoy the benefits of a King Edward’s education.
As a governor for the past 22 years and more recently as Treasurer, I am pleased, personally and as a Trustee, that we have been able to support over 100 pupils per year in this way, allowing them to gain access to the benefits I did. The opportunities and experiences we offer young people at King Edward’s are life-changing as I know from my own experience. So it gives me so much pleasure to read about the impact this special place has had on these young lives and also on the lives of their families. I hope you enjoy reading the testimonials in this latest Bridewell Foundation Report too, and if you do please consider supporting our Foundation and giving more young people a chance. We rely on this generosity and indeed are so grateful to all our supporters; in particular our major donors who include several children’s charities, several City livery companies and most notably the City of London Corporation which has been supporting us since our foundation in 1553. I am very grateful to them all for their commitment.
Thank you.

John Attwater Headmaste r What do donors mean to King Edward’s Witley? Quite simply, donors make it possible for us to fulfil our founding mission. Without you, we would not have been able to provide bursaries for over 100 children this year, fund individual music tuition for those who cannot afford it, or bring about exceptional projects around the school. These are things which cannot be done from school fee income alone.
In 2014-2015 we were able to support 114 pupils through the School.
Donations enable us to help many more children than our endowment funding could do alone, and to leverage additional support from charities and other partners. Without your gift, we could help fewer than a quarter of the pupils that we currently support. But more than the simple economics, philanthropy is an expression of goodwill and confidence in what we achieve at King Edward’s Witley, which is felt in the City of London, locally and internationally. I would personally like to thank you for your support to the Bridewell Foundation. We are well aware of the financial pressures on parents, donors and friends in difficult economic times, which only increases the need for the work you and we do. The Bridewell Foundation Report is our way of recognising your contribution and I hope that you enjoy reading it.

Bursaries change lives Our founding mission to help society’s neediest children get a better start in life remains as true today as it did in 1553. Recent research demonstrates and it is increasingly recognised that a boarding education provides the encouragement, routine and structure often missing at home. Each year it costs £2m to fund bursaries at King Edward’s which cannot be provided by our endowment alone, so philanthropic support from the City of London, City Livery Companies, charities and individual donors is vital to help as many children as we can. We are proud to report that in 2014-15 your gifts provided bursaries for 114 children. Bursaries help some children who are deemed to be ‘at risk’ by Social Services and who are in desperate need of a boarding school education. The need for bursaries does not abate and we receive many more applications than we can currently provide for, which is why we continue to seek donations to the Bridewell Foundation to help many more children. On behalf of all our pupils, thank you.
Current Upper Sixth Bursary recipient From the moment I received my letter of acceptance for King Edward’s I did not know what was in store for me here, but I knew that I had made the right choice. I wouldn’t have thought that I
thank you
would one day reach Upper 6th (going through 5 years as if it was 2 weeks!) and be the person that I am today. King Edward’s truly is a foundation for life, not just in education but all aspects of the construction of wonderful characters that come and go through our school. I have made lifelong friends here for sure and made many memories along the way. When I have my kids one day I hope that they can come to King Edward’s to understand why I would always say to them that this really is an amazing school. I feel honoured to have had the privilege of being a pupil of King Edward’s Witley.

Your donation has impact Grandmother of a City of London Bursar ‘Initially when ‘Claire’ joined King Edward’s I missed her incredibly, yet I see
thank you
now if she hadn’t been at King Edward’s she would not have flourished.

King Edward’s has provided structure and support that she wouldn’t have received at home due to her Mum’s health and disability. Whilst I supported as much as I could, I was also working full-time and put off my retirement to help the family. The City Bursary towards Claire’s fees, and the support of the other charities, have been vital and made it all possible. Claire has made incredible friends for life - they all support each other. It has been important for her mother and me to know that Claire is safe at school: we have always known where she is. I have been happy with the good communication with her Housemistresses and teachers, and always felt I knew what was going on. It has been such a wonderful opportunity”.
“ The vast majority of families surveyed reported that their own lives were positively impacted by their child being away at boarding school. ” The Royal National Children’s Foundation (RNCF) Impact Report, April 2015
Mother of a Foundation Bursar
thank you
‘I truly believe that ‘Zoe’ going to King Edward’s has helped keep our family together. I used to really worry she would be taken into care, because of the difficulties at home with her Dad’s health problems. I have been given peace of mind, knowing she is safe. She has been nurtured at King Edward’s and we have watched her grow and blossom into an intelligent, confident person. Zoe has really made the most of the education she has been offered, and I don’t think what we’re seeing in her now would have been possible if she had stayed at home. We couldn’t have afforded this without the bursary, and we are all forever grateful’.

Standing l to r: Brolin, Issy, Michael, Jess and Philip; Sitting: Comfort-Diane, Ollie and Sarah
We are pleased to report that the first telephone fundraiser this summer for the Bridewell Foundation for the provision of bursaries at King Edward’s Witley raised over £62,000 in income and pledges. Our team of eight young Old Witleians spoke to over 500 Old Witleians, current and former parents and friends of the School in a two and a half week campaign. We welcome 127 new donors to our community of Bridewell supporters. Thank you!

“Calling up fellow Old Witleians was brilliant! The conversations were full of funny anecdotes, nostalgia and stories of fascinating lives. Each donation, even when they were coming thick and fast, felt like a massive victory for our little team…. Being a part of the telephone campaign was an incredibly rewarding experience. It was wonderful hearing of so much warmth and affection for the school that, along with its teachers, and the friends I made, is responsible for where I am today”.

“One of the most amazing things about King Edward’s is the wide range of pupils who attend. I can’t say this is the reason we chose to send our son here, but to see it in action now we are part of the King Edward’s community confirms we made the right decision. Our son is thriving, and part of that is because of the incredibly rich school environment. We are fortunate enough to be able to afford to pay fees. But giving back is important, which is why we are personal contributors to the Bridewell Foundation and have arranged for the Trust to be our charity of the year at work. I run a company which works with adults who have very similar backgrounds to the pupils who benefit from bursaries at King Edward’s. It is heart breaking to see the other side of the coin, where children from unfortunate backgrounds are condemned to poor life outcomes because of circumstances outside their control.”
