Welcome from the Treasurer Justine Voisin I am delighted to introduce the Bridewell Foundation Report to you. It is one way in which we are able to thank you for your support of the vital work that the Bridewell Royal Hospital Foundation does for children in need of a boarding style of education at King Edward’s Witley. This first year of my Treasurership has been a truly special year of celebration and commemoration of the 150 years since the move of Bridewell from London to Witley. It has given us the opportunity to reflect on our heritage and re-affirm our deep bond with the City of London who continue generously to support our work. We are extremely grateful for their commitment and indeed that of all our donors who give so generously to provide life changing opportunities for the young people in our care. As we look to the future and further expand our educational activities, we recognise that the need for assisted boarding placements continues and that the Bridewell Foundation has a vital and significant role to play in providing this, along with our partner charities and organisations. I very much hope that you will continue to join us in our endeavours to give more young people the chance to fulfil their potential.

A special day of celebration A Bridewell Day service of thanksgiving was held at Southwark Cathedral in Spring 2017. “In this ancient Cathedral and Collegiate Church of St Saviour and St Mary Overy, we of the Borough of Southwark welcome you of the Schools of Bridewell Royal Hospital, as you return to the place where you were nurtured on your journey from the City of London and from where you removed to Witley 150 years ago.

4

Welcome from the Headmaster John Attwate r This year, as we mark the School’s 150th anniversary of its move to Witley, we are more than ever aware of the long heritage of our founding mission and the continuing need for it today, which shows no signs of abating. That imperative, to give children who through disadvantage and circumstance need such support, the very best we can provide to fulfil their potential and prepare them for life, becomes a transformational reality for so many pupils, thanks to your generosity. Time and time again those pupils leave King Edward’s with the skills and confidence to build unique and remarkable lives, always exceeding and often confounding expectations, as this report demonstrates. Our work as a school, your support as past and present pupils, parents, friends and donors from all walks of life, our combined enterprise as a community, is a wonderful expression of confidence in the children and the School we support, and a clear statement that such investment in their futures is worth making. This confidence rubs off on our pupils and their families, provides ambition and often hope, and is the engine-room for their motivation, achievement and fulfilment. That is a fantastic thing, and it is a huge privilege and reward for me to see it happen here every single day. So, once again, thank you; your work to help the Bridewell Foundation continue to do what it has always done is historic, outstanding and of untold value. I continue to be humbled by your generous support for the Bridewell Foundation and I have no doubt what you read here will inspire you further and introduce others to this very special mission.

Making all th Three generations of Old Witleians share their experience of how King Edward’s changed their lives.

Eric Mason Peter Smith

Alfred House 1943-46

Gordon House 1940-45

King Edward’s was extremely good for me. It changed my life around. When things were bad, the School was there for me.

6

Eric Mason (below left) and Peter Smith (below right) were at the School in the ‘Hambledon Years’. Peter made the move from Witley to the former workhouse at Hambledon in 1942, when our buildings were requisitioned by the Admiralty, whilst Eric joined the School there in 1943, to escape the bombing raids in London. The facilities were basic and food became scarce as the war progressed but Peter and Eric both recall plenty of outdoor activities and sports, the care and interest of their Schoolmasters and the camaraderie of their peers, at a time when they were both in need of it.

King Edward’s fitted for me for life.

he difference Being distracted at an early age by my parents’ difficult separation and home life being very much in turmoil, resulted in me falling far behind in my education and losing confidence in my ability. King Edward’s not only provided me with the educational support I desperately needed, but also pastoral care, routine and stability. I had a brilliant seven years at King Edward’s which I feel so honoured to have had. Looking back, 11 is very young to be living away from home and it was a very difficult decision for my mother to make, but she knew it was the best possible decision that could be made in the circumstances. I admire the sacrifices that my mother made to ensure that I was in the best environment for my needs.

Fay Davies

Queens’ 2002-2009

King Edward’s not only provided me with the educational support I desperately needed, but also pastoral care, routine and stability.

Throughout my time at King Edward’s, I was supported by a number of charities, including The Royal National Children’s Foundation, The Artists’ General Benevolent Institution and the Fashion & Textile Children’s Trust (FTCT), as well as a school bursary. Without this support I would not have been able to go to King Edward’s. Knowing that there were people who believed in me and had invested in my education, gave me a confidence in my ability. This confidence led me to achieve 10 GCSEs, the International Baccalaureate, receive a Degree in Textile Design at Central Saint Martins and complete a scholarship at the Royal Drawing School. I am now 26 and work as a printmaker and drawing teacher and am in the process of setting up an art school that is focused on making art classes affordable and accessible for people in my local community.

Making all th John Beadle

Wakefield 1973-1980

Prior to King Edward’s I lived in the shadow of the London Docklands, before it became gentrified. Bored at school, grossly overweight, getting into trouble at home (warned by the police twice), I was being brought up by my wonderful grandmother while my mother held it all together financially in various factory jobs. I did realise there was something better out there, but had no idea how I would achieve it. I shudder to think what would have happened if the chance to attend King Edward’s had not come along. I found the offer of a place at King Edward’s exciting, but the transition at age 11 to 1970s boarding life really difficult: large, austere dormitories, sleepless nights, cold showers and cross-country runs early in the morning were a real shock to a young lad’s system. Thankfully, the School has truly been transformed for the better in facilities and culture since then.

People talk about ‘life changing events’. One of my biggest was King Edward’s. Although I didn’t really realise it at the time, so much of what I have done and achieved since then was because I had been given the chance to go to this place.

8

And the wealth of opportunities that this school offered! I threw myself into as many things as I could: 1st XI football, acting, directing and winning multiple House drama competitions, running voluntary chapel services, participating in mock general elections (beating our former Treasurer!) and in my last year being elected as prefect. Along the way I made fantastic, lifelong friends (you know who you are) and met the Queen Mother on Prize Day. I never forgot my roots, and most years brought my ‘East End’ street football team down to play the School, along with their friends and families. One particular year, they turned up in a red London bus and thrashed the School 2nd XI (the 1st XI got their revenge the following year!). This was one of my ways of keeping my two very different lives in balance.

he difference As for the teaching, I really could not believe the variety on offer. I know each of us have our own teachers that inspired us. For me it included John Pridmore, who showed me how a Christian should live in the modern world, the late Richard Broad, who left me with a passion for history, and Andrew Cairncross, for the theatre. They have left a lasting impression. When I left King Edward’s, I was determined to use the academic and personal skills I had learned at school as a platform for a future career. I studied Politics at Manchester University and Industrial Relations at the London School of Economics, and embarked on a wonderful international career in Human Resource management, working in New York, Hong Kong, Paris and Melbourne with companies such as GSK, HSBC and IBM. So many of the skills I first learned at King Edward’s, and, in particular, the people skills in getting on and forming relationships with a wide variety of people have held me in good stead in my chosen career.

It felt perfectly natural to want to give back, having had such a lucky break in life, to give other children the life changing chance that I had at King Edward’s.There are so many children from so many walks of life who would profoundly benefit from what our School can offer. I’m proud to say I’m an Old Witleian and a Bridewell Fellow. It’s tremendously engaging to meet and talk to these impressive young people who have benefited from our support. If you feel the same, can I encourage you to join us?

John and his wife Darian are long term supporters of the Bridewell Foundation. John was awarded Bridewell Fellowship in 2013 and is a member of the 1867 Society.

overview King Edward’s Witley continues to be in the vanguard of the assisted boarding movement, promoting a boarding school education as an alternative to care for vulnerable young people. In addition (to academic benefits) it has found that students benefited from broadened horizons, enhanced future prospects, improved social skills, increased awareness of social diversity and increased confidence and wellbeing.” Times Educational Supplement (TES) 9 June 2017. Before the 1980s, local authorities supported more than 100,000 assisted places nationally. Today just 26 local authorities are funding 60 places. Local authorities now have a lack of knowledge of assisted boarding and there has been pressure for intervention with a family to show quick results whereas assisted boarding is a longer term investment. In July 2017 the Department for Education launched Boarding School Partnerships, a new information service designed to make it easier for Local Authorities to access information and expertise about boarding school placements. King Edward’s Witley is one of the initiative’s co-founders, along with leading children’s charities. “I am a strong believer in the potential of boarding school to transform the lives of many vulnerable, disadvantaged young people. Experience shows that - for the right young person, at the right school, and at the right time - boarding school really can help transform lives and prospects”. Lord Nash Under Secretary of State for Schools, England 2013-2017
