Welcome from the Treasurer Justine Voisin Young people face unprecedented challenges in the modern world and an education that provides a foundation for life is more critical than ever for children in need of a boarding style of education at King Edward’s Witley. The Foundation truly transforms lives, and we rely on the generosity of our supporters to continue in our mission. We are grateful to all our donors, partner charities, City Livery companies and notably the City of London Corporation for your commitment to providing life changing opportunities for the young people in our care. As we look to the future it is clear that our society’s need for assisted boarding placements continues and that the Bridewell Foundation has a vital and significant national role to play in providing them with the help of our partner charities and organisations. Thank you for your support in the crucial work we are doing. I very much hope that you will continue to join us in our endeavours to give more young people the chance to fulfil their potential.

Excellence and opportunity - the Chapel Choir in Rome Our chapel choir of 29-strong singers, including several Foundation Bursars, toured Rome in January 2018 and had the amazing opportunity to sing in the largest Christian church building – St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City. “This trip offered our Chapel Choristers a once in a lifetime experience of singing to a very high standard in the ‘eternal city’ steeped in tradition.” Mr Sliwka, Director of Music.

Welcome from the Headmaster John Attwate r As I enter my tenth year as Headmaster of King Edward’s, I am more than ever aware of the long heritage of our founding mission and the continuing need for it today, which shows no signs of abating. That imperative, to give children who through disadvantage and circumstance need such support, the very best we can provide to fulfil their potential and prepare them for life, becomes a transformational reality for many pupils, thanks to your generosity. Time and time again those pupils leave King Edward’s with the skills and confidence to build unique and remarkable lives, always exceeding and often confounding expectations, as this report demonstrates. Our work as a school, your support as past and present pupils, parents, friends and donors from all walks of life, our combined enterprise as a community, is a wonderful expression of confidence in the children and the school we support, and a clear statement that such investment in their futures is worth making. This confidence rubs off on our pupils and their families, provides ambition and often hope, and is the engine-room for their motivation, achievement and fulfilment. This is a fantastic thing, and it is a huge privilege and reward to see it happen here every single day. So, once again, thank you; your work to help the Bridewell Foundation continue to do what it has always done is historic, outstanding and of untold value. I continue to be humbled by your generous support for the Bridewell Foundation and I have no doubt what you read here will inspire you further and introduce others to this very special mission.

Working in partnership to address disadvantage through education.
K
ing Edward’s founding mission is as relevant today as it was in 1553, and our long history of providing a
home and education for disadvantaged children has placed us at the forefront of the assisted boarding movement. The School is proud to be one of the co-founders of the Boarding School Partnership joint initiative with the Department of Education, working to increase the number of boarding schools able to offer assisted boarding to children in need of a boarding-style education, and working with Local Authorities to help them take advantage of this resource.
the opportun None of this would be possible without the collaboration and partnership we have with charities such as Royal National Children’s Springboard Foundation, Reedham

Fiona Kirton, King Edward’s Witley
from the City of London Livery Companies, who have us, are committed to addressing disadvantage through education. Recently we have begun to see changes in models of financial support, with a move towards reducing the number of pupils a charity is involved with but a greater commitment to each pupil, which allows a more individual

nity to thrive relationship with the most deserving pupils and their families. We are fortunate to have our own designated Bursaries and Charities Officer, Fiona Kirton, who is key to pulling these puzzle pieces together and works diligently to assist parents with their bursary applications. She also advocates for pupils and their families when seeking funding from other charities. About her role, Fiona Kirton says “I’m extremely proud my job involves helping children who otherwise would not have the opportunity to come to King Edward’s to fulfil their potential. Here, they are away from the troubles that might be at home, and free from the responsibilities of caring they might have to take on.”
Thank you to all the trusts, charities and individuals that make this possible, such partnership is at the heart of what makes King Edward’s unique. 7
A new partnership with the Sir John Cass’s Foundation This year King Edward’s renewed our historical link with Sir John Cass’s Foundation, one of London’s oldest and largest education charities, who have most generously granted support of £500,000 for bursaries over the next seven years. This is a truly transformational grant to the Bridewell Royal Hospital and we sincerely thank Sir John Cass’s Foundation for their consideration and generosity. Sir John Cass (1661 – 1718) was an Alderman and Sheriff of the City of London (1711). He served as Master to the Carpenters’ Company and the Skinners’ Company and was knighted in 1712. Between 1709 and 1714 Sir John
the opportun Cass was Treasurer of the Bethlem and Bridewell Hospital, King Edward’s governing charity.
When he died in 1718 he bestowed the income from his various properties in London to provide education for poor London children. It took another 30 years, until 1748, before Sir John Cass’s Foundation was fully founded. Today, the mission of Sir John Cass’s Foundation is to promote the education of young people in inner London through its grant programmes for individuals, educational institutions and organisations. With both Bridewell Royal Hospital and Sir John Cass’s Foundation seeking to address disadvantage through education there is much to celebrate in our shared vision as we begin our partnership and we certainly look forward to forging a long-lasting collaboration to the benefit of children in need of a boarding-style of education.

ith a generous bequest left to us in 2011 we have been able to enhance the opportunities available
Knapton-Cavill Music Tuition Scheme
to our pupils by offering free instrumental music tuition to all 11 and 13-year-old pupils joining the School for a trial period. For those demonstrating commitment, enthusiasm and aptitude, continuing tuition has been funded for the duration of their time at King Edward’s on a means-tested basis, ensuring those pupils who are least able to afford lessons benefit as a priority. As a result, the ‘Knapton Cavill Scheme’, named after the original benefactors, has particularly supported those Foundation Bursary students

The benefits have been tangible; not only have these children had the chance to learn a musical instrument,

has brought with it those softer benefits of musicsocial skills, teamwork, resilience and self-belief. They experience the enjoyment of playing in ensembles, performing and competing, in school and at some wonderful venues. As such this scheme has proved to be of immeasurable benefit to our disadvantaged and vulnerable children in particular.

nity to thrive Having benefited over 200 children to date, the original bequest is now running out. We are sincerely grateful for the support of the Worshipful Company of Needlemakers for their commitment to fund three bursaries for the next three years but more must be done to ensure the scheme’s continued success. We are determined that our fundraising efforts will continue this year to ensure our most disadvantaged pupils develop their musical potential. One year’s music tuition for one pupil costs £750 and the whole scheme costs £15,000 a year to run.
If you are interested in supporting the Knapton-Cavill scheme please do contact Connie Sturgess on 01428 686730 or by email: development@kesw.org.

overview King Edward’s Witley continues to be in the vanguard of the assisted boarding movement, promoting a boarding school education as an alternative to care for vulnerable young people. Since the arrival of Lord Agnew in September 2017 as the Government Minister in charge of independent schools at the Department for Education, we have seen the renewed commitment to the Boarding School Partnership initiative, set up to advocate for assisted boarding. “I’m delighted that so many organisations are working with us to help create more of these opportunities for these children, helping them to get the best start in life and to go on to reach their full potential, no matter what their background.” Lord Agnew The Telegraph 24 December 2017
Most recently in June 2018, Norfolk County Council published their report following 52 children in or on the edge of care who had been placed in boarding schools as an alternative to the state system. The report showed the placements to be highly effective with 71% of the Norfolk-funded boarders showing reduced levels of risk and 63% moved off the risk register completely. These findings match our own experience of the transformative effect boarding can have on pupil’s lives.

The Old Witleians’ Fund continues to contribute approximately £16,000 per year to the fees of 12 individual pupils and, with an Enrichment Fund, pays for additional trips, activities and equipment that their families cannot afford. This fund is being wound down and will be closed in July 2019. Donations to the bursary programme now go to the Bridewell Foundation.
