From The Head We were all hoping that the summer term would bring weather best suited to cricket and tennis. It was a vain hope, and thunder, lightning, hail and rain have added some additional challenges to those of reverse swing and topspin for our youngsters! They have been undeterred and have remained cheerful even when faced with torrential downpours on Dartmoor. Now, as I write, our students are all heads down in the middle of examinations and the School has a curiously monastic atmosphere. This never lasts and, as the end of term approaches, youthful enthusiasm returns for Sports Day, Activities Day, the Arts Festival, the KESSoc Ball and the Swimming Gala before we reach the summer holidays. We are preparing for a number of developments over July and August with additional parking to be added at Wellington, the refurbishment of our history classrooms, a new roof for our Biology Department and the completion of remaining work in our Music Department. Work is also under way to construct new dining facilities and classrooms at Stroud for 2014. The number of trips that take place remains a very impressive part of the School’s provision with record numbers involved. Over a third of the School have been involved in these activities over the spring holiday and many of these are reported in this issue including a very successful ski trip, an expedition to Morocco, a classics trip to Rome, various Duke of Edinburgh expeditions and language visits to Mutterstadt, Catalonia and Le Havre. Our charity work remains very active with significant numbers involved in Summer Camp, the Lovaton Project on Dartmoor and South Africa over the summer. Other students will be spending the summer holiday in southern France with the watersports trip and on our expedition to Vietnam and Cambodia. Reports of these activities and various individual achievements are given in detail in this edition. This has been a very active term but also a rather nostalgic one as we say farewell to some long serving staff including Mrs Price (Head of Theatre Studies) and Mr Turner. We thank them and the other staff who are retiring or moving to other posts and wish them all well. AJ Thould Head

Academic Le Havre French Exchange The annual Third Year Le Havre French Exchange started during the Easter holidays with (for once) the away leg taking place first. 25 KES students stayed with French families for 4 days and visited our partner school, the Collège les Ormeaux, for a few memorable lessons. They also received a guided tour of the town Law Courts, including the custody suite!
Les filles – a French play! Third Year French students were treated to an entertaining and fast moving play by the Onatti Theatre Company on 12th March. The play was entitled ‘Les Filles’ and students had already had a chance to work on the vocabulary and part of the script prior to watching the performance. Students were impressed by how much they could understand and audience participation was excellent and much appreciated by the actors and teachers.
A little bit of Spanish sun On the last day of the spring term, 27 Third and Fourth Years headed for Córdoba, in the South of Spain, on what was meant to be a few days in the sun. Unfortunately it rained most days, with torrential rain on others, although luckily, on the Saturday, they visited Seville in the blazing sun and heat. Students stayed with Spanish families, getting to know the Spanish lifestyle first-hand and also attended two 3 hour lessons in a specialist language school. Other activities included taking part in a Flamenco workshop, a trip to the cinema and sampling some of the typical food such as chocolate con churros, montaditos and tapas.

Angers French Exchange This year’s Sixth Form French Exchange came to an end in March when the French students returned to Angers after a busy week in the UK. They were able to enjoy a 3 day weekend with their KES exchange partners, a day in London and a visit to Oxford, before spending a day going to lessons at KES. The exchange ended with a meal at Buddy’s Diner in Winchester when everyone managed to enjoy good food and each other’s company for the last time.
Classicists in Italy! The Classics Department spent a week in Rome and the Bay of Naples in the Easter holidays with 26 students. It was a fabulous trip with sunshine and warmth and much walking. Rome looked beautiful against a blue sky, the views from the Palatine were magnificent and the group was also lucky enough to be in St Peter’s Square when the Pope appeared and circulated with the crowd. Sorrento, with its orange and lemon trees in fruit, was busy and buzzing and the classicists made their usual pilgrimage to Caecilius’ house in Pompeii but non erat in atrio! Some of the group discovered the women’s baths at Herculaneum and everyone made it to the top of Vesuvius with its stunning views.

Spanish Debating Stockmarket Competition Challenge In March, Evie Marshall and Ariadne Gault competed in a Spanish debating competition against other prestigious independent schools. In their pool the pair faced stiff, experienced opposition from LEH and Mill Hill. For their first debate they supported the motion that “space travel is an extravagance in today’s economic climate” and they won with well-structured and convincing arguments. The second motion was a much bigger challenge as they had to defend the motion that “Spain’s president is capable of leading the country out of its economic crisis”. However, during the debate they stood out for the research that went into their defending arguments and they were commended by the judges on the high level of their language skills.
Butser excursion In May, 65 First Year pupils spent the day at Butser Ancient Farm and Roman Villa near Petersfield. The facilitators introduced the group to six key activities which gave everyone evidence for the impact of the Celts and Romans on the culture of these islands. Sustainability, chalk modelling, wattle and daub technique, the chalk pit, the Bronze Age settlement and the villa were all investigated wholeheartedly by KES students.
On 19th March a group of 5 Fourth Year Economics students took part in the Inter-schools Stockmarket Challenge. Ben Brooks, Robbie Keefe, James Leask, Andrew McAllister and Will Scullard took on various roles such as Media Analyst, Finance Manager and Trader. The boys spent the morning buying and selling shares and making rapid decisions as market conditions changed. There were 25 teams taking part and the KES team finished in 2nd place overall.

Hispanists visit Catalonia In May, 39 First and Second Years went on the annual trip to the Catalonian region of Spain. On the first day they took in some of the wonderful sites in Barcelona, starting off in the park Gßell, whilst on the second day they visited the town of Rosas, near the French border. The final day’s activities included a tour of the medieval town of Girona where the group explored the Arab baths, the Jewish quarter, the cathedral, the old town walls and its many winding streets before ending up on the river for tapas. The trip was a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by all those on it, despite the cool weather.

Co-Curricular Thanksgiving The annual Service of Thanksgiving took place at Winchester Cathedral on the afternoon of 20th March. The service, which incidentally marked the 460th anniversary of the founding of the school in 1553, was led by The Right Reverend Peter Hancock, Bishop of Basingstoke.
Target 2.0 Congratulations to the KES Target 2.0 team who took part in the national finals this term. Nikhil Ohri, Alex Jones, Tom Capper and James Skinner finished 4th in the competition behind three previous winners; St Paul’s School, Tonbridge School and Leeds Grammar School. This is still a fantastic achievement in a competition entered by 284 schools nationally.
KESnetics The KESnetics Junior team comprising James Harden, Ben Fox, Patrick Lotery, Finn Ducker and Peter Ryall has entered the regional South East final of the Toyota solar-powered challenge. The team designed and printed a model solar-powered car on the 3D printer using CAD software and recyclable materials. Although all of them were First Years and they were competing with students up to age of 16, they still ended up in the top 8.

Greenpower trials On Sunday 9th June the KESnetic Greenpower team travelled to the Goodwood racing circuit to attend the first regional heat for the national Greenpower competition. The race consisted of a 4 hour endurance challenge where the team could only use 6 fully charged electric batteries, so a balance of speed and endurance was required. After taking the ‘Best Newcomer Award’ last year and having made several modifications to the car, the team was confident leading up to the event. The first 2 hours of racing went very well with slick pit stops and a high average speed resulting in the team running in a top 10 place, before mechanical issues struck. Suffering from the heat, the car needed to be recovered from the circuit costing the team around 30 minutes and effectively ending the competitive race. KESnetic continued to race but suffered further bad luck with a puncture and fading battery life. On the positive side the team improved on last year’s performance and despite the race being red flagged twice the average speed of the car had made a significant improvement.

Supremo and Suprema! Congratulations to Alex Chamberlain-Clay and Iona Todd who have become the Hampshire boys’ and girls’ chess champions (“Supremo” and “Suprema”) at Under 15 level. Together with Toby Saer and Chris Lotery (runners-up at U15 and U12 level) they have now qualified for the Southern Gigafinal at Reading in July.
A Moroccan adventure During the Easter break, 39 pupils and staff experienced the delights of Morocco for a week of adventures and cultural, geographical and historical delights. Highlights included visiting the Atlas mountains, trekking above the Dades Gorge, camel riding out into the Sahara Desert, sleeping under the stars at a traditional Berber camp, having a tour of the film studios in Ouarzazate, visiting the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Benhaddou (an old fortified city), seeing the sites of Marrakech, tasting a variety of Moroccan cuisine and haggling for presents in the souks. The scenery, weather and hospitality of our guides were all amazing and much was learned about this stunning country.

Second Year Camp Two hardy groups of Second Years recently took to the wilds of Dartmoor for a weekend of team building exercises including climbing, building giant catapults and camping and hiking. Although tiring, the group all enjoyed the experience enormously.
Debating competition On 2nd March, Hamish Traill, Emma Blackman, Joe Smith, Vanya Zheludev and Miss Stenning went to the International Competition for Young Debaters at Oxford Union. Emma and Hamish competed in three debates, including the prepared motion: “This house would return all treasures of national and cultural significance to their country of origin”. They also tackled spontaneous debates on doping in sport and the right to trace biological parents. They both spoke impressively, winning the second debate and holding their own against such rivals as Winchester and Eton.
Friendship and Futures
Charities Commission With examination season upon us, there have been relatively few charity events in the first half of the summer term. The ever popular doughnut sale was run by Summer Camp, and Lower Schools Charities organised a dodgeball competition. The Christian Union arranged a collection of tins for the Basics Bank, in support of the homeless, and plans were made for a Twister competition run by the Sixth Form. This term’s non-uniform day featured a ‘Green’ theme as the School raises awareness of water shortages around the World.
In March, the Summer Camp team organised and ran 2 sessions (with the themes of friendship and future aspirations) for a group of Southampton Young Carers. These evening sessions, usually run twice a month, enable young carers to come together, gain necessary respite from their caring role and offer peer support and understanding to each other. The Sixth Form chose and planned their activities, with the aim of developing empowerment and confidence skills of the young people attending the group.

Climbing out of the cattle trough! On 15th May, the Sixth Form games climbing group spent a glorious time climbing on the Swanage cliffs and enjoyed the Jurassic Limestone of the “Cattle Trough”. Most students managed to complete the climbs available and many had the chance to place “trad gear” while having the safety of a top rope as they watched their gear fall out to the belayer below. The setting on the cliffs (a few metres above sea level) was stunning with the sun going down as the group finished off.

Windy Racers On 11th June King Edward VI School hosted a Windy Racers Day for its partnership schools. 23 Year 5 pupils from four local primary and junior schools were invited to take part in a variety of events run by the Science and the Design and Technology Departments to learn about wind power. In the morning, pupils learnt interesting facts about the wind and air particles and they were able to conduct a wide range of experiments. In the afternoon, they had to use their creative skills to design and build a model windpowered car in order to take part in a race. All pupils involved were incredibly enthusiastic and thoroughly enjoyed the day. This was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the end of this academic year with our local primary schools whilst having some “serious fun.

Challenge 13 Congratulations to Dr Sinnett-Jones who has now completed her 9th challenge in her CHALLENGE 13 project and was interviewed on Radio Solent by Julian Clegg this term. Dr Sinnett-Jones has set herself 13 extreme physical challenges culminating in the 250km Kalahari Augrabies Extreme Marathon in October in order to raise money for Southampton Young Carers, a charity supported each year by the Summer Camp team and who, due to recent government cuts, have had their funding significantly reduced. Over Easter she competed in the Devizes to Westmister International Canoe Race. Around 250 canoeists paddled through the night from Devizes, aiming to get to the finish line under Westminster Bridge. This year saw some of the toughest conditions on record with temperatures as low as -4oC overnight which meant that crews and their boats were covered in ice for many hours. Mr Blow also competed in the race (raising money for Parkinson’s) and he and Dr Sinnett-Jones completed this extremely tough event finishing in 47th and 27th places respectively. Having only started running in January, Dr Sinnett-Jones, along with Mr Miller, completed her first marathon at the end of April and then subsequently her first ultra-marathon one week later through the New Forest. Two weeks later she then ran her 6th Challenge in May by taking part in the Cardiff Ultra - a 50 mile run through the Brecon Beacons National Park to the finish in Cardiff. Despite severe blisters and unknowingly running with a torn tendon in her foot, she completed the gruelling distance in 9 hours 34 minutes. In order to aid recovery, there was less running in the next few challenges which included cycling 106 miles across the South Downs Way and 73 miles around the Marlborough Downs and she was also part of a relay team that ran a 5 mile loop non-stop for 24 hours.
Challenge 13 has also been about getting other people involved and challenging them to push themselves beyond what they would usually do. Subsequently a number of other teachers have got involved in a number of the different challenges, including Mr Miller, Dr Purves, Mrs Ferrand, Mr Cross, Mr Peel, Mr Gilbert and Mr Brown. Of particular mention is Mr Miller’s incredible achievement of running the South Downs Way in two days. For more information about Challenge 13 or to sponsor Dr Sinnett-Jones and the other teachers involved visit her website at http://www.challenge13.co.uk/

Spring Concert Congratulations to the 220 KES musicians who performed to a full house in the Spring Concert on 13th March. Symphony Orchestra, 2nd Orchestra, Big Band, Symphonic Winds, Choirs and vocal groups took to the stage with the usual eclectic mix of pieces, typifying the breadth and depth of music at King Edward’s.
Soul Music Max Kinder auditioned earlier this year for a part in one of the National Youth Music Theatre’s summer programme of productions. Max has since been selected for the production of Soul Music. This will involve a two week residential period of rehearsals in Godalming in August followed by performances at South Hill Park Arts Centre in Bracknell.
Ensemble Concert The Ensemble Concert in March was an excellent evening of very high quality musical performances. There was a variety of music played by a wide range of the School’s smaller musical ensembles and duets, ranging from the younger Saxophone Choir and String Quartet (from the Lower School) to the established Telemann ensemble playing a concerto which recently secured them a place in the semi-finals of the Pro Corda Chamber Music Festival.
Fanfare competition Miriam Chapman-Rosenfeld has won the Royal Opera House Fanfare Competition and subsequently performed and recorded one of her compositions with the orchestra of the Royal Opera, Covent Garden. Her piece will be played during the interval of future opera performances.

Zimbe! In March, a small group of the School’s advanced singers were involved in a wonderfully vivacious performance of Zimbe! at Southampton’s Central Hall. The students joined with Twyford School and the 80-strong Twyford Singers to perform this lively and moving African choral work by Alexander L’Estrange.
Fantastic film makers Aelfred Hillman entered his Greyworth Museum animation in Animated Exeter, one of the largest public animation festivals in the country. Aelfred won the ‘Young Animator of the Year’ under 12 competition. Third Year pupil, Matthieu Livingston also entered the Winchester Jewry Street Short Film Festival at the end of last year. Fifteen movies were shortlisted and Matthieu’s was nominated under all three categories, Best Made Short Film, Short Film with Greatest Emotional Impact and Best Young Filmmaker. Matthieu won the Prize for ‘Best Young Filmmaker’ with his movie Sober.
Third Year Showcase Concert The Third Year Showcase Concert took place on 22nd May in the Music Recital Room. The event proved a huge success with the performers playing to a full house of friends and family. There was a wonderful variety of performances from vocal solos and duets to trombone, violin, cello, flute, saxophone, piano and drum solos. Everyone performed to a very high standard and we all very much look forward to seeing how they progress musically as they enter the Upper School next term.

KES to work with National Theatre The KES Drama Department has been accepted onto the National Theatre New Views Programme for 2013-14. This is a really exciting opportunity for KES to work with the prestigious National Theatre, the home of British theatre. The programme will be led by Mrs Piggott as a Playwriting Club and all pupils aged 15-18 are welcome to apply for a place. It will be limited to 10 pupils and offers them the chance to develop their playwriting skills, receive tutorials in School and from National Theatre staff, and have school visits and mentoring from a playwright. In spring 2014 pupils will have a series of rehearsed readings in School to hone their work, before 10 pupil plays are submitted to the National Theatre New Views Playwriting Competition. The winner will have their play performed at The National Theatre in London in July 2014 whilst the runners-up will see rehearsed readings of their work. As well as the tutorials and mentoring, the scheme also offers opportunities for the group to go up to the National Theatre and see a selection of the 2013-14 season of plays.
Junk Jam On 13th May, Third Year music classes began preparations for the Arts Festival with a fun workshop with the group ‘JUNK’. Pupils developed performance skills (part singing and drumming) using unusual recycled objects culminating in their participating in the carnival procession on the last day of the Festival.
Prize winning performance Congratulations to flautist Jenny Whitby, who has won the Music at Beaulieu Competition. The prize of £3,000 will be used to fund her place in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. This award is a wonderful achievement for Jenny and follows her win at the Portsmouth Music Festival last month, giving her the opportunity to play a flute concerto with the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra.
TWO! ‘Two’ by Jim Cartwright was performed in the Robert Twigg studio during the last week of the spring term. The play is designed so that all the parts can be performed by two actors. In this production the parts were shared out, whilst sticking to the principle that only two actors should be on the stage at any one time. This was very much an ensemble piece, but special mention should go to James Harvie and Julia Roope who played the warring landlord and landlady with ferocity, wit and honesty.
Quartet take trophy Congratulations to Ben Atherton, Alex Diaper, Zoe Carter Tai and Catherine Whitby for winning the Southampton Festival of Music and Drama Jubilee String Quartet Challenge trophy.

Arts Festival The 2013 Arts Festival, celebrating the 460th anniversary of the School, ran for three days at the end of June and provided a colourful myriad of workshops and performances which provoked enquiry and stimulated creativity. Thirty-seven visiting artists came to the School over the three days to work with students and workshops ranged from steel drum playing, Afro Caribbean dance and print making to creative writing, architecture, jewellery-making and illusion theatre. There were several spectacular large scale events such as the Art Exhibition, Jazz concert and the play Haroun and the Sea of Stories and the highlight of the festival was the traditional Street Theatre held on the School Field on the last day. This included something for all with crazy golf, face painting, balloon modelling, pavement art, buskers, dancers, magic acts, stilt walkers, juggling, mime artists and a whole school Zumba dance. A magnificent carnival procession brought the Street Theatre to a close with all the visiting artists, ranks of pupils wearing carnival masks, musicians, dancers, visitors from partnership schools, the complete cast from Haroun and a staff fancy dress contingent. A spectacle in every sense!
