PROGRAMME NOTES English Folksong Suite Ralph Vaughan Williams Composed in 1903, English Folksong Suite is one of Vaughan Williams’ most well-known pieces. Receiving its premiere at Kneller Hall, the piece draws influence from several English folk songs. The suite consists of three movements; March, Intermezzo and another March and features folk melodies such as ‘Green Bushes’, ‘Pretty Caroline’ and ‘Blow Away the Morning Dew’. Interestingly, the suite originally had a fourth movement ‘Sea Songs’, played second. Vaughan Williams chose to omit this after the first performance and orchestrated and published it separately as a standalone piece. Music for a While Henry Purcell Composed in 1692, this composition is the second of four movements by one of the most notable English Baroque composers, Purcell. The piece is deemed “incidental music”, and was composed for the play Oedipus, written by John Dryden and Nathaniel Lee. Originally written for voice and continuo, the piece now exists in several arrangements, including violin and keyboard. One of his most popular pieces, Music for a While is a statement about the power of music. The Liberty Bell John Philip Souza Composed by renowned bandmaster John Philip Souza in 1893, ‘The Liberty Bell (march)’ was written for the operetta The Devil’s Deputy. Finance for the show fell through leaving the operetta unfinished. Band manager George Hinton later suggested The Liberty Bell as the title of a separate march project. The composition has been played at four of the last six presidential inaugurations and many associate it with the opening titles to Monty Python’s Flying Circus. Just a Closer Walk with Thee Traditional With music from an anonymous source, Just a Closer Walk with Thee is a traditional spiritual with title and text from the Biblical passage from 2 Corinthians 5:7: ‘We walk by faith, not by sight’. Here arranged for brass quintet, it is most commonly sung and has been covered by a number of artists including Van Morrison and Ella Fitzgerald. It is a frequent number in the hymn and dirge section of a traditional New Orleans jazz funeral. Romance from The Gadfly Dmitri Shostakovich In 1955, Shostakovich composed the music for the Soviet drama film The Gadfly, based on the novel of the same name by Ethel Lilian Voynich. He then went on to arrange twelve sections from the score into a suite, of which ‘Romance’ is perhaps the most recognisable, due to its use in the 1980s TV series Reilly, Ace of Spies. ‘Romance’ is reminiscent of French composer Jules Massenet’s ‘Méditation’ from the opera Thaïs, as both have yearning and poised melodies. Misty Erroll Garner Misty was first performed in 1954, in instrumental form, by the Erroll Garner Trio. It was not until a year later that Jonny Burke wrote the lyrics to transform it into the popular jazz standard that has since been covered by numerous instrumentalists and vocalists. Interestingly, Misty has no verse and is written in 32-bar A1-A2-B-A2 form. Considered an ultimate love song from the jazz standard repertoire, notable covers include Frank Sinatra and Sarah Vaughan. 14

Trio Sonata in C Minor Johann Joachim Quantz Johann Joachim Quantz was a German flautist and composer who made considerable advances in flute technique in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Touring England and France, he became known as one of the finest flautists in Europe and became flute teacher, flute maker and composer to Frederick II of Prussia in 1740. He wrote numerous flute sonatas, concertos and trios and his Trio Sonata in C Minor is one of over 200. Habanera from Carmen Georges Bizet Taken from the first act of Bizet’s well known opera Carmen, ‘Habanera’ is an aria sung by Carmen to the village men who are begging her to tell them when she will give them her heart. ‘Habanera’ is the popular name for ‘L’amoure est un oiseau rebelle’, translating to ‘Love is a rebellious bird’. First performed in Paris in 1875, Carmen was not well received at first as audience members were shocked by what they considered unconventional and controversial characters. Sadly, Bizet died after its 33rd performance and did not see the success it received in Vienna a year later. My Spirit Sang all Day Gerald Finzi Gerald Finzi was a British composer, influenced by Edward Elgar and Vaughan Williams. He developed his own compositional style and was well known for his choral compositions. Finzi has a unique style of word-setting. His works are never over embellished as text is mostly set syllabically. Taken from a set of seven part-song settings of poetry by Robert Bridges, My Spirit Sang all Day is an expression of the joy felt when experiencing love. Blue Skies Irving Berlin arr. Steve Zegree The Chamber Choir conclude their programme with one of Berlin’s most popular tunes, written in 1926. On Thanksgiving Day of that year, Irving Berlin and Ellin Mackay Berlin had their first child, and this was the first song Irving completed in the next month, dedicating it to his daughter for Christmas. It was originally a last-minute addition to the musical Betsy and makes numerous appearances in films and musicals, including White Christmas. This version, arranged by Steve Zegree, is a classic arrangement and features humorous quotes from well-known classics such as Bach’s Invention No. 13 in A Minor and Grieg’s In the Hall of the Mountain King. Waltz II from Jazz Suite No.2 Dmitri Shostakovich Dmitri Shostakovich was a Soviet composer and pianist born in 1906, and was a prominent figure in 20th-century music. He composed two jazz suites, in an effort to respond to the Soviet government’s demand that more be done to reflect the emerging genre of jazz, and the cultural and musical developments in the West. It is unknown whether it was an ironic, tongue-in-cheek response, or whether he was musically naïve to this genre due to the previous limitations put in place by Russian communists. It is one of the few orchestral pieces to feature the classical saxophone.

Greensleeves Traditional Greensleeves is a traditional English song, attributed to Henry VIII. With its composer unknown, many speculate the words were inspired by either Catherine of Aragon or Anne Boleyn causing some to question whether Henry VIII himself composed it. The song is a plea from a man to his mistress who appears not to love him anymore. It is referenced in The Merry Wives of Windsor (circa 1602) by William Shakespeare. The Skye Boat Song Traditional A traditional Scottish folk song, The Skye Boat Song is a Jacobite lament describing how Bonnie Prince Charlie, disguised as a serving maid, rowed the Minch to the Isle of Skye after the defeat of his Jacobite rising of 1745. It has words written by Englishman Sir Harold Boulton, who used a Gaelic song format. It is often sung as a lullaby, in a lilting 6/8 time. Postlude No. 8 Elliot Cole Elliot Cole is an American composer and singer with a fresh contemporary approach to his music. He considers his compositions the music of a ‘culture of one’. It received its premiere in 2012 by the group ‘So Percussion’. It is a series of eight pieces, played by four players with eight double-bass bows on a single vibraphone. The weaving of the bows and tapping hands create an intricate counterpoint just as interesting as the tender harmony and melody. The Lady is a Tramp Rodgers and Hart ‘The Lady is Tramp’ is taken from the 1937 musical comedy Babes in Arms. It is an upbeat song about a feisty woman who is disinterested in the strict etiquette of high-society New York and is therefore dismissed as a ‘tramp’. The song was written for the movies teenage leading lady, Mitzi Green. Many considered it a little too ‘worldly’ for a youth to sing, but that did not prevent it from becoming the show’s most successful hit. A Heart Full of Love from Les Misérables Claude-Michel Schönberg ‘A Heart Full of Love’ is taken from the well-known musical Les Misérables composed by ClaudeMichel Schönberg, with lyrics by Alan Boubil and Herbert Kretzmer. It is sung by the love triangle Marius, Cosette and Éponine. Marius and Cosette confess their love for one another, whilst Éponine looks on and realises her love for Marius will never be reciprocated. In other countries, the song is translated to varying titles, including ‘The Heart to Happiness’ (France) and ‘So Full of Love’ (Spain). Interestingly, Éponine’s part was cut from the original French production. Woodchopper’s Ball Joe Bishop and Woody Herman Composed by American jazz multi-instrumentalist Joe Bishop, and American jazz clarinettist Woody Herman in 1939, Woodchopper’s Ball is also known as At the Woodchopper’s Ball. The original recording received a Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 2002, and was considered both composers’ most popular hit, having sold a million records. This up-tempo blues melody is considered a jazz standard and appears in the first volume of Hal Leonard’s famous Real Book.

For Lena & Lennie Quincy Jones Taken from Quincy Jones’s 1962 album The Quintessence, ‘For Lena & Lennie’ is a medium swing ballad that Quincy wrote for the American jazz pianist, Count Basie. The album received a warm response and was considered ‘the sound of the modern, progressive big band at its pinnacle’. Strasbourg-St. Denis Roy Hargrove Composed by Roy Hargrove, ‘Strasbourg-St. Denis’ is a popular tune from his influential jazz album Earfood, released in 2008. The song is a popular choice at jam sessions and on jazz radio stations and has rightly earned the title of a ‘jazz standard’. The song is built from a few repeating chords, but is embellished by a tight groove from the rhythm section to contrast with the catchy horn line and a displaced descending line. Rhapsody in G Minor Johannes Brahms Johannes Brahms was a German composer and pianist who mastered the art of counterpoint in his numerous compositions. He is often referred to as one of the ‘Three-Bs’, alongside Bach and Beethoven. His Rhapsody in G Minor, was written in 1879 whilst he was living in Pörtschach, Austria and was dedicated to fellow German musician Elisabeth von Herzogenberg. The piece has four distinct themes and is presented in a traditional sonata form. The main key is not established until fairly late in the exposition. Conga del Fuego Arturo Márquez Inspired by the Afro-Cuban conga, Conga del Fuego Nuevo (Conga of the New Fire) portrays Márquez’s fascination with Caribbean music and is characterised by its memorable melodies and exciting climaxes. Márquez is praised for writing infectious rhythms and this composition is no exception. His interest in this style goes much further than the Conga and he has written over eight danzóns, the second of which is doubtlessly the most popular. Sway Pablo Beltrán Ruiz Written in 1953, Sway originated as an instrumental mambo titled “¿Quién será?” composed by Pablo Beltrán Ruiz and Luis Demetrio. In 1954, American lyricist Norman Gimbel wrote the lyrics and transformed it into the popular hit that was originally recorded by Dean Martin. Since then, it has been covered by numerous artists, most notably Michael Bublé on his debut major-label studio album.
