King Edward VI School
End of Term Bulletin 12th July, 2013
A
s I write the School is basking in hot summer weather of the sort we thought we might not see again. There is some welcome cricket and rounders being played with enthusiasm out on the south field, we have enjoyed Sports Day and the Swimming Gala, both of which proved to be very competitive occasions and, as ever, the Allen Grant Inter-House competition has gone to the wire! The final weeks of term have also been marked by dozens of university visits, language and history trips to France, the Arts Festival, the Art Exhibition, Third Year Drama, Activities Day, Duke of Edinburgh expeditions and Geography and Biology field trips. Many parents also enjoyed the splendid biennial ball organised by the tireless KESSoc Social Committee.
STAFFING We have relatively few staff leaving King Edward’s this term but there is one very significant retirement after 15 years of service. Mrs Price has been an excellent Head of Theatre Studies and will be much missed as will Mr Turner (Physics), Mrs Williams (Geography) and Mrs Backen (English). We are also grateful to Mr Powell (Mathematics), Mr Peel (Head of Hockey), Mrs Hooton (Geography) and Mrs Sheridan (Design Technology) who have each completed a year with the School. We have a number of new staff who will join us in September. We welcome Mr Kent (Director of Sport), Mrs Race (Head of Geography), Mr Crichton (Head of Hockey), Mr Eyssens (Mathematics), Mr Westwater (Mathematics), Ms Birks (Theatre Studies), Mr Brown (Geography), Dr Wikeley (English), Mr Belassie (Music) and Miss IbanezManzano (Spanish).
As you will note in the new edition of KonnEctionS, we are now underway with the refurbishment of our history classrooms, some final work to complete the renovation of the Music Department and we will be re-roofing the Biology Department. This work should be completed by the end of August.
There are also some internal changes of staff responsibility to note. Mr Fitzpatrick becomes Senior Master, Mr Gilbert, Director of Prep School Liaison, Mrs Piggott, Head of Theatre Studies, Miss Campbell, Head of First Year, Dr Sinnett-Jones, Charities Co-ordinator, Mr Miller, Head of Lake, Dr Leaman, Co-ordinator for the Most Able, Dr Thomas, Assistant Head of Year – Lower School, Miss Stone, Assistant Head of Year – Upper School. Miss Smith will be away on maternity leave next year and Dr Purves will be the acting Assistant Head (Co-curriculum), Mr Simm the acting Head of Physics and Mrs Barnes-Wardlaw the acting Junior Science Co-ordinator.
The summer holiday promises to be busy with the Water Sports in France, a Music tour to Italy, Summer Camp in Swanage, the Lovaton visit with St. Mark’s Junior School, the expedition to Thailand and Cambodia, various Duke of Edinburgh expeditions and the charity venture in South Africa working with the Goedgedacht Trust. I wish you all a good break over the summer. AJ Thould Head
