King Edward VI School

End of Term Bulletin 11th July, 2014

O

ver the past fortnight we have had a huge array of activities including a wonderful production of old folk tales by the Junior Drama Club, a variety of Third Year plays, an innovative art exhibition using the squash courts as a gallery, concerts, fund raising for our charity projects, a host of university open day visits, work experience placements, Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, preparation for the Fourth Year students as they consider their Sixth Form options and Sports Day in the sunshine. A wide range of visits and events organised under a new umbrella title of “Endeavour” occupied the penultimate week with two visits to France, a geography field trip to Osmington Bay, biology field work week at Dale Fort and various activities in the New Forest and on the School site. Sadly the swimming gala and the English study visit to Dorset have had to be delayed until September as a result of the School closure. You will see much of this recorded in more detail in the latest issue of Konnections to be published at the end of term. Over the summer many students will be involved in activities abroad and in the UK including the Summer Camp in Swanage, the Geogedacht team in South Africa, the St. Mark’s visit to Lovaton, the kayak expedition to Sweden, the Operation Wallacea Expedition to Madagascar and the watersports holiday in France as well as further Duke of Edinburgh expeditions. Our thanks go to all of the staff involved in those trips – they will be giving up a lot of their holiday to make them work so smoothly. The summer holiday will see a number of projects including a new fitness facility and the refurbishment of the School Hall as well as a new Dining Hall and classrooms at Stroud. The early closure of the School has meant that the usual end of term awards (published here) will be made at the start of the new term in September as will the award of the Allan Grant House Shield. I wish you all a healthy break over the summer. AJ Thould Head

SIXTH FORM INFORMATION EVENING Wednesday 22 October

First Aid Club Following a very successful year, the First Aid Club will be running again in September. The course is designed to give the necessary first aid training to cope with situations the pupils may face in everyday life. During the course topics covered include common illnesses, bleeding and shock, burns and scalds, choking, communication and casualty care, coping in an emergency, recovery position and resuscitation. At the end of the nine week course (1hr each Monday after school), the students are assessed and if they are successful receive a nationally recognised First Aid qualification (British Red Cross).

This evening is an opportunity for external and existing Fifth Year pupils and parents to access information about examinations offered by the School and to start thinking seriously about their Sixth Form choices. After short presentations by the Head and the Director of Sixth Form there will be opportunities to talk to staff and students about specific subjects and broader issues.

The course is open to Second Year pupils and above and will commence on Monday 15 September. There are just 10 places available on the course which will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Please click here to access a letter from the website which includes a link to KESpay.

PRE-SEASON GIRLS’ HOCKEY SESSIONS First Year

SCHOOL TEXT BOOKS Unfortunately, due to the unforeseen closure of the School, pupils had to carry more books home than they would usually do so at the end of the academic year. This included a number of text books which are usually collected in by subject staff. Could you inform your son or daughter to bring these back in to School on the first day of next term (Wednesday 3 September) so that they can be collected and issued to the next year group of pupils.

Welcome to Thebes is set in the present day in a fictional African country but is inspired by ancient myths. It offers a passionate exploration of an encounter between the world’s richest and poorest nations in the aftermath of a brutal war. It looks at greed, humanity and the impact of war and conflict on people both as a society and individually. It is a powerful, epic piece of theatre with a large cast offering exciting opportunities for both male and female actors.
