King Edward VI School

End of Term Bulletin 8 July, 2016

O

ver the past fortnight we have had a huge array of activities including an excellent Science and Technology Festival which included an innovative set of evening lectures for parents and students, a host of university open day visits, work experience placements, Duke of Edinburgh expeditions and preparation for the Fourth Year students as they consider their Sixth Form options. A wide range of visits and events organised for Endeavour occupied the penultimate week with much of this recorded in more detail in the latest issue of Konnections. Sports Day and the Swimming Gala both proved to be very competitive occasions and, as ever, the Allen Grant Inter-House competition has been fiercely contested! Over the summer many students will be involved in activities abroad and in the UK including the Summer Camp in the New Forest, the Goedgedacht team in South Africa, expeditions to the Galapagos and Indonesia, a cricket tour of Sri Lanka and the watersports holiday in France, as well as further Duke of Edinburgh expeditions. Our thanks go to all of the staff involved in those trips – they will be giving up a lot of their holiday to make them work so well. The School will become a building site over the summer holiday as we begin work on the reconstruction of the old Dobson Theatre, the refurbishment of the Art Department and the expansion of the Sixth Form Concourse. Work will also take place to restore aspects of the roof of the main building and a new reception area and nurses’ facility will also be prepared for September. We thank Mr Fitzpatrick, Mr Long, Mr Walter and Mr Patten for all they have done for the School and wish them well as they retire after a combined 141 years of service to the School. We also wish Miss Lindebringhs, Mr Tesseyman, Dr Prowse, Dr Paver and Dr Wikeley every good wish as they move to roles in other schools or alternative occupations. The names of the staff replacing them may be found on page two of this publication. Sadly Mrs Piggott remains very ill and we have appointed Mrs Arnold as Acting Head of Drama in her place for the coming year.

I wish you all a good break over the summer.

AJ Thould Head

D of E and Sports Fixtures

The practice of Mindfulness has been found to promote health and wellbeing, improve mood and energy levels and reduce anxiety. Mindfulness does not conflict with any beliefs or traditions.

Students who are undertaking the D of E award but who will also be involved in school sport should expect to have sports fixtures on all Saturdays and must therefore select training and expedition dates so that they can fulfil both their sporting commitments as well as their D of E requirements. In addition students must ensure that in satisfying the requirements for the volunteering section they do not arrange to work when they will be required in school for sports fixtures or other school commitments.

To apply for the course and to see costs and further information, please click here.

For a comprehensive and regularly updated calendar click here.

A reminder to parents that issues which require urgent attention during the holidays should be directed to the Main Office or to enquiries@kes.hants.sch.uk

The Servant Queen A group of Christian parents and staff meet regularly at King Edward’s to pray for the school, the pupils and staff. They have very kindly donated a copy of ‘The Servant Queen and the King she serves’ to every pupil and member of staff at King Edward’s to mark the long and faithful service of HRH Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of her ninetieth birthday. The book includes a foreword written by the Queen herself and speaks openly of her faith and how she describes it as an anchor in her life. You will receive the book in the post along with your child’s report.
