King Edward VI School
Half Term Bulletin 24th October, 2012
W
e have had an excellent beginning to the new year with some sunshine to dry our pitches before the rain and wind returned. Junior House events have got off to a good start with plenty of hockey and rugby and the term began with the South Coast Rugby Tournament at Wellington. We were particularly pleased that the girls' 1st XI and U14 squad won their respective Hampshire Hockey Cup Tournaments while the U16 girls' netball squad were runners up in the county round of the National Schools' Championships. We enjoyed Speech Day and Debra Searle’s address was particularly well received by the School. We have had dozens of trips, visits, clubs and activities engaging hundreds of our students during the day and after school. Further details of the School’s activities may be found in the recently published Annual Review. Sotoniensis, our school magazine, will be published soon with more detailed reports of the last academic year. We wish our boys’ hockey players good luck on their tour of Holland over half term while members of our exchange with Charlotte Country Day School in North Carolina enjoy southern hospitality in the midst of the final days of the American election. The Sixth Form French exchange also starts off with the away leg to Angers during the half term break. Closer to home we hope that the final Duke of Edinburgh expedition of the term does not get too wet on Dartmoor! May I take this opportunity to wish you a good break and I hope that your sons and daughters will return refreshed for the second half of this always very busy term. Head Master
CAR PARKING We have been asked to remind all parents with regard to the zig -zag markings outside the principal entrances to the School. Following a City Council Traffic Regulation Order, it is an offence to park on these lines. Please make a point of keeping these areas clear at all times, particularly when delivering or collecting your children.
Carol Service The School’s carol service is at 7.30pm on Monday 17th December at St. Mary's Church, St Mary Street, Southampton. You are warmly invited.
Prior to the marking up of these lines, not only was there a critical problem of congestion at the School entrances but these areas were also unsafe for pupils on foot. This was particularly true at the Kellett Road gates, where the whole area in front of the Caretaker's house, to the road, must be kept completely clear of cars, as a safe zone for pedestrians only. The gates themselves must be left clear for essential access to and from the School site. Parents are advised to park further down Kellett Road or in Radway Road, Wilton Road and Kineton Road and make arrangements with their sons/daughters to meet them there. By using these alternative roads, parents can do much to ease the congestion at the end of the School Day.
The service is followed by mulled wine and mince pies. We don’t issue tickets for this event but would advise you that it is extremely popular and it has been known for latecomers to have to stand at the back!
