May we ask that the you remain seated until directed by the stewards. This is to allow safe movement; please extinguish your candle.

Peace on Earth, goodwill to men from Heav’n’s all gracious King! Why do we gather year after year to retell this extraordinary story? Why do we decorate our homes and churches with baubles and tinsel, cook for a stream of visitors and family, spend more than we probably should on loved ones who smile and pack away another pair of socks or superfluous scarf? Why go to all that trouble for an old story from a distant land and long ago? Is it because it speaks of peace and universal goodwill – something never achieved but much pined for? A cursory look at the news tells us that the world is far from at peace; cruelty and selfishness remain powerful forces, injustice and inequality still all too prevalent. Yet amidst all that is bleak and the seemingly insurmountable persists a kernel of something so potent that we are not broken or defeated. Just as those who endured and gave their all in times of war - so powerfully honoured recently, we too are sustained, strengthened and emboldened in our determination to right the wrongs of our age. The story we hear tonight begins to roll away the stone to reveal that fruit that will nourish and help us transform ourselves and our world. The renowned German pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer, imprisoned and eventually executed for his resistance to Hitler, wrote beautifully of what God’s nature meant for him and for those facing adversity and for all of us. The Christmas claim is that such is the love of God, the divine capacity for forgiveness and empathy that He came to share our lives in all their imperfection and messiness. Adam’s sin of disobedience is forgiven by what the Incarnation begins, by Mary’s obedience and the seed that bears a new fruit, Jesus. This is the faith of the Saints, the song they have sung through the ages and that we join with in our carols tonight. The kernel that comes to us in this extraordinary season, that will sustain us and that grows is Hope: grounded in faith in the conquering power of Love seen in the stable, the cross, the Easter empty tomb and in the reality of God-with-us, Emmanuel. May we glimpse this in all we meet this Christmas, in our neighbours, our families, even within ourselves. Jesus promises that God lives in us if we live in Him. With that promise comes the challenge to take our part in God’s mission to transform the world. Peace and Goodwill may still be elusive for so many across the world, but Love and Hope remain undaunted. Having heard the Christmas story and joined the angels and saints in their rejoicing, made merry around the tree and eaten our fill, may we embrace our calling and nurture that Hope this Christmas. May it grow and fill the hearts of all people so that hatred, bigotry, suspicion, exploitation and violence may be cast into oblivion. As we welcome the Christ-Child, we pray he may lead us from darkness into the Light of his love. Julian Poppleton - The School Chaplain

Come Quickly, Holy Child Welcome The Reverend Julian Poppleton - The School Chaplain The Abbey lights are extinguished, leaving only the Advent Candle burning Reading Come humbly, Holy Child - Proverbs 8, John 1, 1 Corinthians 1.17-28 Read by Alicia Martel, Head of Reynolds. Congregational Carol Solo: Charlie Danby Once in Royal David’s city Stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her Baby In a manger for His bed: Mary was that Mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child.

Choir Only He came down to earth from heaven Who is God and Lord of all, And His shelter was a stable, And His cradle was a stall; With the poor, and mean, and lowly Lived on earth our Saviour holy.

Carol The Snow - Edward Elgar Sung by The Chamber Choir Violins Alice Booth and Yuqing Chen O snow, which sinks so light, brown earth is hid from sight, O soul, be thou as white be thou as white as snow. O snow, which falls so slow, dear earth quite warm below; O heart, so keep thy glow beneath the snow. O snow, in thy soft grave sad flow’rs the winter brave; O heart, so soothe and save, as does the snow. The snow must melt, must go, fast, fast as water flow. Not thus, my soul, O sow thy gifts to fade like snow. O snow, thou’rt white no more, thy sparkling too, is o’er; O soul, be as before, was bright the snow.

All And through all his wondrous childhood He would honour and obey, Love, and watch the lowly maiden, In whose gentle arms he lay; Christian children all must be Mild, obedient, good as he. Not in that poor lowly stable, With the oxen standing by, We shall see Him; but in heaven, Set at God’s right hand on high; Where like stars his children crowned All in white shall wait around.

Emmanuel – God with Us Reading Full of Grace - Aurelius Prudentius Read by James Diaper and Roma Creedon, Heads of Capon. Congregational Carol O little town of Bethlehem, How still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting light; The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.

How silently, how silently, The wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of his heaven. No ear may hear his coming; But in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive him, Still the dear Christ enters in.

O morning stars, together Proclaim the holy birth, And praises sing to God the King, And peace to men on earth; For Christ is born of Mary; And, gathered all above, While mortals sleep, the angels keep Their watch of wondering love.

O holy Child of Bethlehem, Descend to us, we pray: Cast out our sin and enter in, Be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels The great glad tidings tell: O come to us, abide with us, Our Lord Emmanuel.

Reading God with Us - Matthew 1:18-23 Read by Ben Fox and Beth Ryan, Heads of Sylvester.
