School lunches and Breakfast Sandwiches P.S.H.E.
Daily Routine There is a two-week timetable (Week A and Week B). The plan for the day during both weeks is as follows:
During lunch times and after School there are many clubs — see the information later on to decide which clubs you are going to join!
Friends When you first start at King Edward’s, you may not know anyone, but soon enough you will meet lots of nice people and find friends to hang around with. It isn’t easy starting in a completely different school, but remember that everyone is in the same position as you. We all went through it and we all have plenty of friends now. Try to go to the hockey or rugby practices that run before term starts. There is hockey for the girls and rugby for the boys (you’ll get details about this). You will meet friends and enjoy yourself as well as improving your hockey or rugby. It is a great way to meet people who will be in your class and year. It is good fun even if you have never played that sport before.
The First Day Everyone gets a letter about what happens on the first day so don’t worry that you won’t know what to do! The letter gives you information on where you should go and at what time. On my first day at King Edward VI school (KES), I was really scared. I could tell other people were too! My first opportunity to make some new friends was arriving at the bus stop on ‘Day 1’ to get on the school bus. It wasn’t so bad because only first years travel by bus for the initial journey. I found someone with a friendly face and asked if I could sit next to him. We got into a conversation about which tutor group we were in and what school we came from. It turned out that we were in the same class! When we got to school, the entire first year group was gathered on the school field. There were a sea of faces and it was quite daunting at first. We were asked to line up in our tutor groups, which provided another opportunity to make some friends. When we got to our classroom, we were paired up and asked to find out some interesting facts about our partner. Then we introduced our partner, with the facts we had learned, to the rest of the class. My partner in the task has become a really great friend ever since! At lunch break, we sat together in a big group and chatted about our first morning experiences. By the end of the day I had found a nice group of boys and girls to hang out with at my breaks.
TOP TIPS:
The school bus is your first opportunity to make some friends. So, ask around and find out where people live and what class they are in.
Don’t worry if you don’t travel by school bus – there are plenty of opportunities to make friends later on.
As soon as you get to school and are on the field, find people that are in your class and make general conversation.
Everyone is nervous; as it is a big change, so do not feel like you are the only one feeling scared.
As long as you are just yourself, you will make plenty of friends.
There are plenty of lunchtime and afterschool clubs at KES. Join in and meet people with similar interests to you.
Remember ….the one thing everyone has in common... we are all new!!!

First Year Worries
By Russell Pugh
First Year Worries Moving from a primary to senior school is obviously unnerving. However soon after you have joined you forget your worries and your hangups. Everyone else will have exactly the same feelings and you are not the only one.
Even though I have two older sisters at KES I still had worries. My biggest worry was probably navigating the school, which seems huge and arriving to lessons on time. Before the end of the first few weeks you will probably know the whole school plan as well as your own home. Even if you are slow at picking up all the different Humanities, English, Classics and Maths corridors, the school provides you with a map. Teachers don't mind if you are slightly late for the first few lessons if you explain you got lost!
All the teachers are understanding for the first few weeks and you will only be in trouble if you make a mistake again, this is rare and you really shouldn't worry about it.
If you have any problems then contact your tutor or the Head of Year and they will help you sort out any issues you might have. KES is an awesome school and I wish you all luck in your first year here.

Tile Barn Pastoral Day Autumn Term Early in the Autumn Term each tutor group spend a day at an outdoor activities centre called Tile Barn.
The day consists of all kinds of different activities, for example: jumping off platforms up really high trees, solving problems and being guided blindfolded through an obstacle course.
This trip is a great way to bond with the rest of your classmates. Their encouragement really helps you through the challenging activities.
Clubs at King Edward’s King Edward’s is a great place for clubs. There is always a great range to choose from.
For example, there is one Junior Drama Production every year, which anyone from the First or Second Year can get involved in, and in the time in between there is a weekly Drama Club. Or if you want something a bit more adventurous why not join the sailing club.
There are many sports clubs, including a club for the main sport that you are doing in Games that term.
You will only be able to be in a sports team if you turn up to the sports practice after school. If you are not there that day it is most likely you will not be put in the match that week. It is really important to tell your coach in advance if you are not available.
On the next few pages we have printed a selection of the clubs that ran in Autumn Term 2015 to give you an example of what clubs and activities you can look forward to.

Sport Sport is a big part of life at School. In the First Tear you will have one PE lesson and a double lesson of Games each week. In PE you will do different activities. These can include basketball, fitness, gymnastics, rounders and athletics. In Games, girls and boys have separate lessons. In the Autumn Term boys play rugby and girls play hockey.
In the Spring Term boys play hockey and girls play netball. In the Summer Term boys play cricket and tennis and girls play tennis and rounders.
You can see from the clubs list that there are lots of different clubs you can attend. There is pretty much something to do every lunchtime and after school if you want to get involved. You should definitely join as many clubs as possible because it’s fun, a great way to make new friends and it keeps you fit.
If you want to join a team it is important to make sure you attend practices. These will be advertised on the notice boards in the Sports Hall area. Team lists are also put up here so you should keep an eye on the boards for details and timings of matches. Details are also available on an app, which you will get information about.
Music Music Lessons Music is a significant aspect of life at King Edward’s. All members of the First Year have three music lessons every fortnight. In these lessons you will learn about different styles of music, play various musical instruments, and learn how to compose your own tunes. Bands, Orchestras and Choirs We have bands to suit every standard and type of musician. There are two different orchestras, a symphonic wind ensemble for Brass and Woodwind players and also a rock academy for any aspiring rockstars! There’s also a String Orchestra for string players and a First Year Choir for singers. Pupils of all abilities are welcome, and all clubs are great fun! The music clubs have also played in many different places like Rome, The Anvil at Basingstoke, Southampton University, Romsey Abbey and even Disneyland Paris. Extra Music Lessons You can also arrange to have extra music lessons to learn a new instrument or improve your playing. You can learn piano, clarinet, flute, singing, violin, viola, cello, musical theory and much more. Music gives you many opportunities which you should not miss.
Drama Drama is very popular at King Edward’s. In the First Year you will be taught Drama, sometimes in the Dobson Theatre or Robb Twigg studio. In Drama we learn lots of skills that are useful, especially in building our confidence.
In the Third Year you can take Drama as a separate subject, you learn lots of new things and enjoy different activities.
Junior Drama Club takes place every Wednesday lunchtime in the Dobson Theatre. There are limited spaces so try and come because it’s great fun. We warm up with games and exercises and then act in our own plays that we make up or in some that have already been written. They are usually run by senior pupils who have lots of energy and really enjoy working with us. You can meet lots of new people and make friends. This is a great time for you to communicate with others. Sometimes we produce a play during the year and sometimes we perform the work we have done to our families.
House System There are six houses at KES and all pupils and most staff belong to a house. In the 2nd – 5th years, pupils are arranged in House tutor groups, and throughout the school there are House competitions, for example Sports Day and the House Dance Competition. Each House has a Housemaster or Housemistress (a teacher) and two Heads of House (a girl and a boy from the sixth form). The Heads of House for September will be announced at the end of the Summer Term but the house staff and the colour of your houses are:

Merits Merits are awarded for five different reasons; 1. Attainment (how well you do) 2. Effort 3. Improvement 4. Helpfulness 5. Other
When you get a merit, the teacher who gave it to you signs the box on your merit card. When you get five merits, your form tutor signs the box on the right. At ten merits your Head of Year, Miss Stone signs the box on the right. Your tutor signs again at fifteen merits.
When you have twenty merits you need to tell Miss Stoneso that you can have your card signed by the Head Master, Mr Thould. If you get enough merits for the Head Master to sign your card three times then you will receive a lovely pen.
If you have produced an exceptional piece of work then you may be awarded a Head Master’s commendation.
ID Cards Your ID card is very important at King Edward’s. It will be used as your lunch card, library card and of course your identity card. Don’t worry, you’ll be shown how to use it for these needs on your first day. Cards are blue if you have school lunches and yellow if you have sandwiches.
However, the most important use for it, will come when entering or leaving school. The gates are operated by these cards. You simply scan your card and push the turnstile; it’s that simple.
You must keep your card very safe and in tip-top condition as if you lose it you’ll have to pay £5 for a new one. We would recommend keeping it in your zipped up pocket inside your blazer so it doesn’t fall out.
School Lunches Lunch Lunch break is from 12.50pm until 2.10pm for first years. You are released from lessons at 12.50pm so you are able to get your lunch and sit down before the rest of the school. The following is an example of a typical day’s menu, there are always vegetarian choices available: Salad Bar; Selection of salads Pasta King; Pomodoro or Chicken Torino Jacket Potato; Baked beans and/or Cheese
Baguette Bar (On Tuesdays and Thursdays); Mixed Fillings Main servery; Cajun Chicken, pork casserole or creamy vegetables en croute served with new potatoes, minted peas or salad Desserts; coconut sponge, custard, mousse, yoghurt and fresh fruit.
Sandwiches If you don’t want to have school lunches then you can choose to bring in a packed lunch.
Having packed lunch is great! You can eat from 12:50pm in the dining room, and you can have whatever you want. You can get a drink from the water dispenser instead of bringing in a drink if you want.
Breakfast Every morning between 8am and 8.30am breakfast is served in the dining room. Really tasty cooked breakfasts are available at a reasonable price and are very popular. If you live quite a long way away and have to leave home early, it is lovely to be able to have breakfast here and it is a nice place to chat to your friends.
P.S.H.E. Also called tutorial, P.S.H.E. takes place once every two weeks. Your tutor will take you for this lesson and it is a great opportunity to speak to your teacher as well as learn about the wider aspects of school life.
You start the year with a lesson on ‘starting school’, this will include information on helping you make new friends and the other things you will need to know to get through your first couple of weeks at school. A typical lesson would maybe discuss bullying and the school behaviour code.
During the year you will also receive a few talks from the school nurses, they will talk to you about your health as well topics such as drugs and alcohol.
This lesson is a great opportunity to learn about all sorts of different things as well as getting to know the people in your tutor group, and it can be a really enjoyable way to get away from your average school lesson.
The Library The Library or LRC (Library and Resource Centre) is situated next to the Head Master’s office. Upstairs there are fiction books and comfy chairs for you to sit and read at break – time.
The non-fiction books are on both floors and they are on hundreds of subjects. The librarians are very helpful and kind.
If you want to take out a book, go to the desk which you face when you enter and give your ID card and book to the librarian. You then have about four weeks to read it.
You can also take out videos, DVD’s and audio tapes. When you wish to return your book, take it back to the desk. If a book is overdue, you get a note in your group base to tell you.
Ask if there is something they do not have in the library and they will get it for you. You can also buy pens and other supplies.
On occasion you can also borrow spare iPads from the library if you have forgotten yours or it is in need of repair, try to avoid this if possible. There are also chargers available in the library if you battery runs out, remember to try to charge your iPad each night to avoid this.
ICT (Computers) There are many computer rooms around the school. You are given your own login name and password when you first come to the school.
You can use the main IT room at break, lunchtimes and after school.
In the First Year you will receive IT training in your lessons. You will have at least one lesson a fortnight. You will need to bring your iPad to all classroom lessons and remember to charge them every night. You will have instructions of how you should use them on the first Friday and there will be Pupil digital leaders to help you at other times.
Homework Homework is given every day but it is not something to get worried about.
Each night you will receive two homework’s, each taking about half an hour. On a Friday you may be given an extra homework for Extended Studies or you might have a reading homework.
Make sure you are clear exactly what your homework is, you may record it in your iPad student planner or generally your teachers will send the tasks directly to the Planner.
Some homework tasks will have to be handed in the next day, others may not be collected for a few days.
However, it is good to get into good habits so try and do your homework on the night it is set – if you don’t, you will be left with lots to do at the weekend.
Examinations All First Year pupils will sit internal school examinations. These are held just before the half term holidays in the Summer Term. You will be examined on most of your subjects, but not PE or Art.
The examinations are important but you should not get too worried about them as you will have studied everything you need to know throughout the year.
Your teachers and tutor will give you guidance about what to learn and how to go about revising. There will also be revision during some of your lessons in the Summer Term.
You will each get your own revision guide to give you some tips and help you plan ahead.
King Edward’s Buses Buses are one of the easiest and most fun ways to get to school. Within a week you’ll get to know everyone on the bus. It’s also a way to make friends with other first years.
The buses are sorted by colours.
There are bus prefects on every bus to oversee behaviour, help you if required and ensure a friendly environment is there for all.
The bus is nearly always on time.
At the end of the day the buses leave at 4.10pm and there are late buses which leave at 5.30pm.
If you miss the late bus (but try not to!) then don’t worry; there is always a member of staff on duty to help you if there are any problems. Just go to the Crush Hall.
Cycling If you don’t take the bus to school then you can ride your bike, walk or travel by car.
Cycling in groups or with a friend is especially great. King Edward’s has a secure bike compound so you can keep your bike locked up there.
If you do cycle to school remember to wear brightly coloured clothing and use a light in the winter so that drivers can see you, and always wear a helmet.
If you cycle, you can get access rights on your ID cards though the Kellett Road gate, this means you don’t have to go though the turnstile with your bike.
Lockers All first year pupils share a locker with one or two other pupils from their Tutor Group. The lockers have a keypad lock which means you don’t have to remember to bring a locker key in everyday, so you don’t have that to worry about.
They are quite big and you can keep all your books, bags, coats, games kit, hockey sticks etc. in there. There is also a secure bag room that you can leave big cricket or hockey bags in, if they are too big to fit in your locker.
If you play a musical instrument then you will be able to keep it in a music locker.
Sharing a locker makes you keep it (fairly) tidy or your locker partners soon get annoyed. Your group tutor will check your lockers regularly so you have to keep them clean and ordered, so make sure there’s no smelly games kit left lurking at the bottom.
Lost Property If you lose something like an article of clothing or sports gear, you can find it in Lost Property, which is the building opposite the kitchen. Lost Property is open every day at first break and there is a fee of 20p (which goes to charity) when you redeem an article.
There is also a storage bin in the sports changing rooms where some sports kit gets collected. Ask a member of the games staff about this.
Glasses, pencil cases and locker keys are kept in the Main School Office. Calculators and watches are looked after by Mr Collinson. Computer memory sticks will be passed to the IT department.
The most important thing to remember is to name everything; that way it will get back to you.
