From The Head Master We were again delighted with our GCSE and A level results, particularly with such a large proportion obtaining the new A* grade at A level (25%), 9 gaining places at Oxford and Cambridge (sustaining our average of 11% of applicants for university each year) and over 90% successful in achieving their choices at university.

A number of new facilities have been completed over the summer including new landscaping on the Hill Lane site and 12 refurbished English and Modern Languages classrooms. The eco-garden sponsored by KESSoc is now blooming after its official opening by the mayor of the city. This is always a very busy term and our students have been involved in an array of activity in sport, clubs and societies, charity work and culture. We have had a number of musical moments this term building up to the Carol Service in the traditional venue at St. Mary’s Church and the Christmas pantomime production of Ali Baba has taken over the School! This issue also reports on the many events that have taken place since July, ranging from regular features such as the Watersports holiday in France, the Goedgedacht Trust in South Africa and Summer Camp at Swanage to the fun involved in exchanging life experiences in Charlotte, North Carolina with our partner school, the cricket tour to Sri Lanka and a new project working with youngsters from St Mark’s Primary School down at Lovaton, our Dartmoor base. The challenges of an expedition across the wilds of Alaska are also described – an experience far removed from the comfort zone of our students! Closer to home our linguists have been improving their fluency with trips to Spain, Germany and France. In December we are saying farewell to Mr Tasker, a long serving teacher of biology and supporter of the Duke of Edinburgh award, as he retires from King Edward’s after 21 years. We wish him well in his retirement. KonnEctionS gives a brief snapshot of the hectic lives of so many of our students at King Edward’s. Some of the individual achievements are also highlighted. For further information please refer to our website and the news section which is updated regularly.

Academic Achievements & Activities Outstanding examination results In August pupils again achieved an outstanding set of A level and GCSE results. 88.6% of King Edward’s students in 2011 passed their A levels with grades at A*, A or B with over 25% at A*. 47% of students gained 3 A grades or more. 9 students, 11% of the applicants this year, received offers for places at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge and over four fifths proceeded to Russell Group universities. At GCSE, 99.3% of grades were at grade C or above with over 40% of all awards at A* and over 76% of all grades at A* and A. 95% of all grades were awarded at A*, A or B. 100% of students obtained the minimum 5 GCSE passes including iGCSE mathematics and English.

Speech Day

On 23rd September, the whole school community gathered for Speech Day and prizegiving at the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton. The guest speaker was Dr Robert Summerhayes (former KES pupil who left in 1998) who gave an interesting and inspiring talk about his long and eventful cycle home from South Africa (across 18 countries covering 9400 miles) to raise money for charity. An incredible journey!

Arkwright Scholarship Congratulations to Tom Thwaites who was awarded an Arkwright Scholarship starting in September 2011. Tom was awarded the scholarship after successfully passing the Arkwright aptitude paper demonstrating flair and originality in solving engineering design problems and presenting GCSE work to a panel of interviewers in March and April of this year. He received his award at a presentation ceremony held in London in October.

London Art Trip On 15th September, 34 Fifth Year artists travelled to London to research their GCSE clay head sculpture projects. The National Portrait Gallery was the first port of call with inspiration everywhere, from the BP Portrait Award Show to the first floor 20th century sculptures. Afterwards the Tate Modern provided more inspiration from Giacometti to Picasso. Sketchbooks were filled and all agreed it was a great day out.

Geography Field Trip

KES + Maths Challenge = Success The final of the Mathematics Team Challenge event was held in London at the end of June with students from KES taking part. The day was action-packed with a whole range of mathematical problem-solving activities. The team, consisting of Cameron Brown, Sophie Proud, Kim Ward and Jonathan Young, came in the top third on the day. This was the first time the School had taken part in the competition and it was a tremendous achievement to reach the National Finals.

Think IT In the last week of the summer term, 71 intrepid Fourth Year students spent a long weekend at Torquay in Devon. For once the weather lived up to what one might expect in July and allowed the group to complete all of the scheduled fieldwork. The students experienced everything from the tors of Dartmoor to the dunes at Dawlish Warren. They balanced the geography with climbing, aero ball and many other activities.

The two day ‘Think IT’ event took place in July at IBM UK headquarters near Hursley. Nine Second Year girls spent the event working in teams of five, with pupils from other schools, on a variety of activities. Their aim was to be innovative and come up with an idea for a smarter planet that ultimately helped people and made money. This culminated in a pitch of their ideas to 5 IBM dragons (very senior managers) on the final day. The winning team’s idea was for an app that could tell you what someone was wearing and where to buy it from. Eleanor Turner was part of this winning group.

Punting in Oxford! As part of this year’s Sixth Form German exchange with our partner school in Mutterstadt, a group of Sixth Formers, accompanied by Mr Kukla and Mrs Steyer, spent the day in Oxford visiting some Oxford colleges and sampling the delights of punting. Their partners also visited London with Mrs Steyer and Mrs Allen, taking in all the major tourist attractions.

The physics of fun In October, members of the Fifth Year physics classes visited Thorpe Park where they spent a stimulating day researching the science of fairground rides and theme parks.

When in Bath... Do as the Romans do!

The annual Third Year trip to Bath took place on 4th October. Students spent an hour in the museum which, after its refurbishment, now includes wall projections of ‘real’ Romans wandering around the site giving a realistic sense of what it would have been like. The Third Years also participated in a workshop where they became archaeologists for an hour and saw Latin actually in use on inscriptions. All good grammar practice!

Wookey Hole In October, the Second Year geographers visited Wookey Hole caves in Somerset. They were given a guided tour around the caves as well as a ‘hands on’ demonstration of traditional paper making.

Co-Curricular Bowled over by Sri Lanka

In July, the 1st XI cricket team embarked on their long-awaited cricket tour of Sri Lanka. The team had a fantastic trip playing some great matches. Whilst away from the performances, the group were privileged enough to meet, and be coached by, some of the best cricketers in the world. Particular excitement was reserved for the sessions by Mahela Jayawardane, Kumar Sangakkara and Muttiah Muralitharan. Off the pitch, the boys experienced a slightly chaotic Tuk-Tuk drive around the stunning city of Kandy, rode elephants, played a round of golf at an outstanding resort and more importantly experienced a little of what Sri Lanka has to offer.

South Africa 2011

In August, sixteen Lower Sixth students ventured to South Africa for the annual visit to the Goedgedacht farm, north of Cape Town. This visit was the culmination of a year of fund-raising activities and the students were able to donate a substantial sum of money to the trust in support of a youth worker. The two week trip included a brief safari visit to Johannesburg, followed by a week’s stay on the farm where the students participated in a number of activities including helping out at the local preschool, performing plays at the local Pathway out of Poverty centres, working on the climate change path, entertaining and working alongside the local youth, as well as spending a full day renovating the new centre. The final leg of the tour was centred in Cape Town itself which allowed the students to conduct their own research into the political history of the country and included a visit to Robben Island and a tour of District Six.

Alaskan Expedition 2011

Over the summer break, a group of Sixth Formers enjoyed an action-packed expedition to Alaska. The trip included trekking, glacier climbing and kayaking. Despite some poor weather on the glacier and a 30 hour journey to reach their destination, the group had an unforgettable and thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Watersports 2011 In the last week of August, 48 students and 7 staff boarded a luxury coach bound for the South of France for the annual watersports trip. As well as sailing and windsurfing, other activities during the week included body boarding at Biscarrose beach, a great trip to Aqualand, mountain biking through the local pine forests, canoeing and beach games. Evening activities included a trip to a local market, various team building challenges and swimming in the campsite pool.

A 45min history of pop music!

Riding the South Downs KES mountain bikers have enjoyed several excursions this term. In September, a small group of Upper School and Sixth Form students met at Queen Elizabeth Country Park near Petersfield. The group rode about 22km, mostly off-road, including a complete loop of the park’s advanced trail, and on some pleasant forest trails around the South Downs Way. In October, the ride of the year was on the South Downs north of Chichester. This time the riders enjoyed a 27km ride with some tough climbs and several fast descents including a steep and technical track which saw a couple of involuntary dismounts. The group also enjoyed two superb days of blue skies and unbroken sunshine during a November weekend trip to Lovaton where they experienced some fantastic rides across the moors.

On 14th October Upper Sixth students were treated to an Open Forum appearance by musician Mike Hurst. Mike’s music career began as guitarist with sixties group ‘The Springfields’ who were once supported at Wembley stadium by ‘The Beatles’. After moving behind the mixing desk, Mike went on to discover Cat Stevens and produce many classic records. With just a stool, a guitar and 45 minutes, Mike presented the history of pop music from Shakespeare to Simon Cowell.

Les anglais débarquent en normandie! At the end of the summer term a group of Second Years enjoyed two action-packed days in Normandy. The busy programme offered everyone a chance to learn about the history of the area as well as the opportunity of shopping in a French market and speaking ‘un peu de français’! All pupils were impressed and moved by the British, American and German cemeteries whilst other highlights included the ‘Pointe du Hoc’, paddling in the sea at Omaha beach and activities at the Château du Molay.

Que la vie est belle en France! In October, 27 students and 2 teachers spent a week in Angers on the Sixth Form French exchange. Students attended the Lycée St Martin for two full mornings and went on a variety of trips during their stay. These included several châteaux, la tapisserie de l’apocalypse, the town of Saumur, les caves de Bouvet Ladubay and the salt marshes at Guérande. KES students had plenty of fun and spoke a lot of French, learning lots of ‘interesting’ phrases and tasting plenty of lovely French food.

3,2,1... blast off! In June, 50 children from five local primary schools attended a Science and DT Rocket Day where they had an extremely interactive experience designing and launching rockets. It was a thrilling educational experience for the children who were treated to a few characteristic Dr Gamblin explosions and were able to sample their own astronaut food and design aliens with Mr Simms. In the afternoon the children designed their own rockets in the DT workshops with Mr Kay and Miss Stone and launched them on the School Field. They were thoroughly impressed with how high they went.

Duke of Edinburgh Award Ceremony On 9th November, KES hosted the 2011 Southampton DofE Award Evening. This event sees those DofE participants in the Southampton region that have attained their Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards in the past year, recognised by the city and awarded a certificate by the Right Worshipful, The Mayor of Southampton. 209 Participants have been successful this year.

Jamaica ‘unplugged’ On 15th October the girls going on the Jamaican Netball Tour 2012 hosted an ‘unplugged’ music evening. Parents, family members and friends gathered in the Crush Hall for drinks before sitting down for a three course dinner. During the evening everyone was entertained by a variety of musical acts whilst members of the netball team served the meal and sold raffle tickets. The event raised a substantial amount of money for their tour and also for a donation to the SOS orphanage in Jamaica. A silent auction was also held for prizes such as a helicopter ride.

117 Bronze Awards with KES Students receiving 74 of those (63%) 63 Silver Awards with KES Students receiving 49 of those (78%) 29 Gold Awards with KES Students receiving 21 of those (72%) In total, KES Participants collected 144 of the 209 Awards during the 2010-11 award year.

Creative Arts Music Competition Results At the end of last term, the annual Music Competition took place and was judged by former KES musician Anke Batty. Anke commented that the standard of playing was extremely high and awarded winning cups to: Grade I-III Grade IV-VI Grade VII+

Lucy Coles (Cello) Josh Blunsden (Voice) Bi Jia Wu (Piano)

La Traviata Twenty three Upper School and Sixth Form students travelled to Covent Garden in September to attend a matinée performance of the Royal Opera’s La Traviata. After having some time to wander round the old market, the pupils were treated to a feast for the eyes and ears as Verdi’s sublime music was presented to the audience in the surroundings of an extravagant ‘Enlightenment’ set. The heroine, Violetta, stole the show with a magnificent display of vocal tenderness mixed with virtuosity and inspired a few of the girls to dream of the Covent Garden stage!

KES represented at English Schools’ Orchestra Carl Wikeley, Zoe Carter-Tai and Jenny Whitby represented the School in the English Schools’ Orchestra at their annual concert in Cadogan Hall, London on 30th October. The pupils played in Grieg’s piano concerto and Shostakovich’s 10th Symphony.

Mozart Players visit KES On the morning of 11th October, 22 Lower, Upper and Sixth Form musicians were treated to a workshop with 4 professional musicians from the London Mozart Players. In the afternoon, they headed off to Sunrise of Bassett care home and then to Hebron Court residential home where they gave magnificent and very touching performances. The programme included music from Handel, Vivaldi and, of course, Mozart. Residents were extremely enthused and inspired by the music which “lifted their spirits”. It was very impressive to see the KES pupils collaborating and sharing their love of music with local Southampton audiences, which included a former pupil who himself was once a member of the School Orchestra.

Music for Youth National Festival Following their success in regional rounds, the Symphony Orchestra and Flute Quartet travelled to Birmingham late in the summer term to perform in the National Music Festival. The Orchestra gave an exciting performance on stage of the magnificent Symphony Hall and received excellent feedback from the adjudicators. Following their performance the players took part in a workshop with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. The Flute Quartet played their programme at the Birmingham Conservatoire of Music and received the ABRSM Chamber Music Award for an outstanding performance.

English National Ballet workshop On 17th October, twenty of the School’s dancers participated in the workshop led by the English National Ballet, giving pupils an insight into the production of ‘Strictly Gershwin’. The pupils explored the themes in the ballet and created movement phrases to live music in the Dance Studio. Pupils had the chance to explore the Hollywood musical era and combined ballet, ballroom and tap.

Sport KES takes home tennis title In July the School entered one boys’ pair and one girls’ pair into the U16 Hampshire Schools’ Doubles Championships. The boys’ pair of Sam Fox & Seb Lataillade were very strong. They won all of their preliminary matches, went on to win their semi-final but sadly eventually lost by 2 short sets to 0 to Kings in a final of very high standard. The girls’ pair of Juliet Fox & Miriam Chapman-Rosenfeld (who were 2 years under age for the event) were victorious! They won 6 out of 8 preliminary matches which put them in a semi-final against John Hanson School – winning on a tie break. They then went into the final against Mountbatten School again winning the match on a tie break. This is the first time KES has ever won the competition and had a pair in each final!

County netball champions

South Coast Rugby Tournament On 11th September the School hosted the 6th King’s South Coast Rugby Tournament at the Wellington Sports Ground. It was attended by schools from all over England and Wales.

Congratulations to the U16 netball squad who have become County Champions. The squad, consisting of Ellie D’Alton (Capt), Selena Cox, Alice Davies, Evie Marshall, Julia Roope, Harriet Rawson-Smith, Emma Falconer, Gina Steel and Elsa Wakeman, took part in the county round of the U16 Schools’ Tournament in which 20 schools from across Hampshire took part. The team won all their pool rounds meaning that they qualified for the National Schools’ Tournament in the afternoon. In the afternoon they again won all their pool rounds and their semi-final match thus progressing to the final against Priestlands school. This was a nail-biting match and at 1 minute to full time the score was 7 goals all. In the closing minute KES scored twice to finish the match 9-7 and become County Champions.

U18 girls are tournament winners

In November the girls’ 1st XI hockey team played in the Hampshire Cup Tournament. The Tournament consisted of a 7 team pool and the KES girls won 5 out of their 6 matches against Churchers, Lord Wandsworth, HCS, Brockenhurst and Chichester. They drew in the match against Portsmouth Grammar School but nevertheless finished in 1st place and were crowned Hampshire Tournament winners. Squad: Frankie Dukies ©, Ria Rhodes, Hannah Kaye, Ella Hall, Jemima Dunnett, Sophie Bentley, Alice Neilson, Rosie Harper, Liberty Roberts, Hannah Larkin, Ellie Stephens, Jenny Swinn, Alicia McDowell, Ellie Glew and Lucy Morgan.

KES success in Swimming Gala On 2nd October, KES competed in the Hampshire Schools’ Relay Gala, held at the Aquadrome, Basingstoke. Bronze: Junior Boys’ Medley Relay Senior Girls’ Freestyle & Medley Relay Silver: Junior Boys’ Freestyle Relay Intermediate Boys’ Freestyle Relay Gold: Intermediate Boys’ Medley Relay

Tournament win for U13s On 28th September the U13 girls’ hockey team played in the West Hill Park Annual Hockey Tournament. Twelve schools from across the county took part and were split into two pools. Through excellent team work, enthusiasm and skill KES achieved an impressive set of results securing them 1st place in Pool A; achieving 2 draws and 3 wins (only conceding 1 goal). This meant that KES went on to play the winners of Pool B (Westbourne) – a match they won 3-0. An excellent win. Well done!

U14s play in Regional Netball Competition On 4th October the U14 netball team took part in the annual County Tournament. The school side competed against sixteen other schools for the title of County Champions and the opportunity to go through to the Regional Tournament. The girls won their pool in the morning and subsequently went through to the National Cup. They won four of their matches but unfortunately the intensity of the day got the better of them and they were beaten by several other stronger teams. The results of the afternoon meant the KES team finished in a respectable 5th place.

Row, row, row your boat! Rowing has continued during the autumn term. The KES rowing squad made the most of the glorious September weather and squeezed in some Sunday rowing sessions at Winchester College. The team continues to go from strength to strength and demonstrates excellent team mentality. Having mastered with ease the basics of rowing, the boys are now working on particular areas of technique. Coach, James Fox, is working with them on individual areas for improvement both before they take to the river, in the training room, and also afterwards using the latest exergaming technologies set up in the boat.

Charities Commission

On 6th October the Charities team presented a whole school assembly to update the school community about the fundraising and charitable activities that have taken place over the past year, the amount of money the group have raised and to talk about which charities have received donations from KES. The presentation also included the broadcasting of a very fun and funky song that was created by the team and was aimed at promoting Jeans for Genes Day (a national awareness day for genetic disorders). The School successfully raised £1,204 for this worthwhile cause via the subsequent non-uniform day. The launch of the Romania Shoe Box Appeal took place at the beginning of October with a final count of 117 boxes being handed in by the end of the month and the Macmillan Cake Sale took place at break time just before half term raising £276 for the cancer charity. There was a fantastic turn out of cakes so our thanks to everyone who gave their time in baking them. ‘Children in Need’ week in November featured a variety of events with the Upper School and Sixth Form Pupils taking part in ‘University Challenge’ and a student and staff version of ‘Would I Lie to You?’ whilst the Lower School Charities team ran a variety of games. The First Year Toy Appeal of a sponsored toy themed run (with each student choosing to dress up as any toy from past or present) was launched at the end of October with a month of collecting sponsorship before the run took place around the perimeter of the school on 21st November at lunchtime. Currently plans are in place for Christmas week with stalls selling a variety of Christmas items and the production and sale of a KES calendar with an Olympic theme. The grand finale will be the ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ staff and student pantomime that will take place at lunchtime on the last day of term.
