We have known for decades that our survival depends on finding new sources of energy, yet we import more oil today than ever before."

It’s time to turn the page on energy, to break the stalemate that’s kept our fuel efficiency standards in the same place for 20 years, to tell the oil and auto industries that they must act, not osnly because their future’s at stake, but because the future of our country and our planet is at stake.

The issue of climate change. I’ve put forward one of the most aggressive proposals out there, but the science seems to be coming in indicating it’s accelerating even more quickly with every passing day.

The Arctic will be ice‐free in summer within 20 years, research says The Times October 15, 2009

North East Passage Two German merchant ships have sailed through the once impassable North East Passage after global warming and melting ice opened a route from South Korea along Russia's Arctic coast to Siberia

Maldives, one of the most beautiful nations on earth, held the artistic, theatrical event of an underwater government meeting to try to bring more attention to the threats of climate change

The Three Gorges Dam, whose reservoir is due to reach its final height of 175 metres over the next few weeks, will be able to produce enough electricity to meet close to one tenth of China's current electricity demands.

Snow has fallen onto Tiananmen Square in China's capital Beijing – the earliest snowfall in 10 years

They sprayed clouds with a special chemical called silver iodide. It's called cloud seeding, and is meant to make rain, but the snow was an unexpected result.

Mount Kilimanjaro's summit could have no snow on it in 20 years because of global warming. Africa's highest peak is losing its remaining glaciers at an alarming rate, scientists warn.

Between 2000 and 2007, both the northern and southern ice fields atop the mountain in Tanzania thinned by 1.86m (6.2ft) and 4.8m (16.7ft) respectively

Since 1912 85% ice gone.

Met office predicts that glacial retreats could lead to a 20% decline in global agricultural activity.

Chris Smith, Baron Smith of Finsbury Chairman of the Environment Agency “The number of people claiming climate change isn’t happening is minuscule, and they have no authority among the scientific community,” he says. “They are mavericks, not backed up by the evidence.”

“People need to understand the implications of global warming”

The Rt Hon Hilary Benn MP: Secretary of State for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs "We know that in future climate change will bring more extreme weather

Water Security Minister

The Climate Change Act in 2008, pledged to cut greenhouse gas output by 80 per cent compared to 1990 levels over the next 40 years.

It will be almost impossible for the UK to reach ambitious emissions reduction targets set for 2050 The recession will help to reduce the UK carbon emissions by around 7% between 2008 and 2010, but the government's domestic goal of a 20% reduction by 2010 is still likely to be missed by a wide margin.

The issue of climate change demands that we transform our business model so that the reduction of our carbon footprint becomes a central business driver.

I am not a scientist. But I listen when the scientists say that if we fail to mitigate climate change, the environmental, social and economic consequences will be stark and severe.

The world is on the brink of an environmental calamity of Biblical proportions, scientists believe. So what can 11 days in Copenhagen do about it?

World leaders deal major blow to Copenhagen climate change deal

Wealthy countries are under pressure to agree to emission cuts of greenhouse gases of up to 80 per cent by 2050 (Britain has already signed up to this) and limit global climate change to 2C. Whatever is agreed at Copenhagen will come into force on 1st January 2013, and supersede the last attempt to save the environment, the Kyoto protocol.

Copenhagen must bring the USA on board

Convincing developing nations they must not follow the West's profitable mistakes, which means billions of dollars and a fair share of the latest green technology.

It takes 10 times more energy to manufacture a piece of paper than it does to copy an image onto it. Therefore, using less paper also means decreased energy consumption.
